There are at least 2 branches of COGHLAN'S in Texas. One came from Ohio by way of Illinois and Iowa. The other came from Mississippi, this I believe is your branch. From what I can determine, these COGHLAN'S are descended from Surgeon Major COGHLAN who came from South Africa in the late 1800's.

D. Coghlan

Yes, Tim, I am your cousin. You used to make tea for us when my family came to visit with you. You had to stand on a chair to reach the stove to make the tea! This had to have been close to 50 years ago. How is your family? I haven't seen or heard from Paul or Laura or your other sister (I forget her name--sorry!) since we visited you and your father years ago. Anyway the info I have on G.M. includes his 3 wives, 16 children and his father James and mother Peggy Watson. If you would like the details, let me know. I'll gather the information and send it off to you. I've even got some information on G. M.'s brother Daniel and sister Mary. I'll send that, too.

Lana

My great-great grandfather was Isaac Watson Coghlan who was married 3 times. His first wife was Phebe Watkins(1811-1858)and they had 10 children: Emily Ann, Henry, Margaret, Phoebe Jane, James, Rebecca, John, Emeline, Isaac Watson (I'm assuming JR.), and Julia. His second wife was Mary Ford, they had no children. His third wife was Lydia Easton and they had 6 more children: Joseph, Charles, General McClellan (my great grandfather), Mary, Daniel and Gideon. Does any of this help? I have more info on G.M. Coghlan if you want it.

Just a quick note about the priest, Father Coghlan, in Philadelphia. If you're talking about Monsignor Gerald Coghlan, he was born in Foxford, Co. Mayo, in 1849 (died 1926). His parents were Michael (1812-1882) and Maria (c1820-1901) Coghlan (nee Prendergast), and his grandparents were Garrett (1784-1870) and Mary (1783-1839) Coghlan (nee Jordan).

Join Date
Apr 2009
Location
Canada
Posts
325
Thanks
0

I am interested in Francis COGHLAN, born Dublin around 1806, who was the author of a long list of European and British travel guides through the 1800s (many readable as free Google books).

Francis apparently had a wife named Catherine, with whom he had at least two children, christened in Westminster (London) England in the 1820s. By the 1851 census, Catherine COGHLAN (born in Monmouth, Wales), was 50 years old, and visiting her daughter Frances. Frances was newly married to William Daniel MORRISON, a tailor; and new step-mother to his several children. (I descend from the MORRISONs.)

However, it seems that Catherine COGHLAN's husband in the same year had another wife, named "Ann", and several young children, in Peterborough, Northamptonshire. The wife was running a "temperance hotel".

Ten years later, the Francis COGHLAN family was in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire, and the wife was now called "Amie". The wife's surname may be KIRBY or KUHLY, and she was born in the Channel Islands around 1820.

Their eldest son Charles COGHLAN was, at 18, a "comedian". This young man went on to become a famous actor in Britain and in the USA, and died in Texas in 1899. His younger sister Rosamond (Rose) also became a famous actress, and their sister Elizabeth (Eily) became a famous singer. After Eily's death, her young son was apparently raised by aunt Rose, and also became an actor.

There are many online photos, news stories, scandals, legends and much misinformation attached to this theatrical COGHLAN family.
The census of 1851 shows the family in Peterborough, Northamptonshire, at No. 3 Market Place. The Head of the house is not at home. Wife is "Ann COGHLAN, 31, born Jersey, Channel Islands." (Info from Wikipedia indicates her name was Amie Marie COGHLAN, nee KUHLY.)

Children are Charles, 8, born Paris, France; Frank, 2, born Wandsworth, Surrey; and Rosamond, 1 month, born Peterborough.

Also in the house is Mrs. COGHLAN's widowed mother, "Anna N. KIRBY" (KUHLY??) 69, born Earsham, Norfolk.

The 1861 census finds the family in Kingston-upon-Hull, Yorkshire. Head is Francis Coghlan, 55, "Author, Topographical", born Dublin, Ireland. Wife's name is spelled Amie. Son Charles, 18, is a "Comedian". Frank, 12, is an Apprentice Ship Broker. Rosamond, 10, is in school.

Wikipedia has quite a long article about the actor son Charles Francis COGHLAN and his family.

I am interested in the COGHLANs because Francis' daughter Frances married William Daniel MORRISON in 1850.

It appears that Frances Susan (b. 1824) and her sister Mary Catherine (b. 1822) were the daughters of Francis COGHLAN and an earlier wife named Catherine COGHLAN. In 1851, this earlier wife was still alive, and describing herself as "married", occupation "Traveller's Guide's Wife"....

Jane Elderfield
I think I have previously spent time looking down the wrong path. I have now discovered that my GG Grandfather, Andrew Coghlan (from Ireland) was a boot maker and resided in Manchester. He and his wife Jane (nee Gilbank) left in a hurry circa 1866 and headed for Philadelphia, but left their two children (Andrew aged 1, and Mary A Coghlan, aged 2) behind in the care of Jane's sister & her husband, William & Mary Masser. There is mention of a priest Fr Coghlan, in Philadelphia who may be a descendant of said Andrew Coghlan.
I believe Mary A Coghlan married Frank Fitzpatrick and they had 2 boys, Frank & Charles, and lived in Hornsey London. Also looking for Alan Partington, or Laura Times, from the Cheadle/ Cheshire area, to get in touch with. Any further info would be appreciated. Cheers. Andy Coghlan.

Hiya Christine and Joseph,
I read this post with interest, and beleive we may possibly be going down the same path. I am soon going to visit my uncle, who has already researched his family tree. He has already indicated to me that his gggrandfather was an o'Coghlan but dropped the O' and left Ireland in a hurry. He set up his family in the UK, but then left his family behind and set up a new family in Pennsylvania/Philadelphia area. How true this is, i'm unsure. But it could possibly be why I too am struggling to get beyond my 4th generation. I wish you luck in your search.

Andy Coghlan, Manchester UK.

James and Bridget Coghlan

I am looking for any information on my ancestor James Coghlan, He was born about 1820 in Ireland. He was married to Bridget, who was also born in Ireland around 1835. In 1859 they were living in St. Paul MN where their son Michael was born. In 1870 the family was leaving near Leavenworth KS. where sons John and James T. were born. Later they were in Kansas City KS where they both passed away. I would appreciate any information on their origins in Ireland. James would be my gggrandfather

Thanks for replies to date, I have now finally gotten started researching my Coghlan tree. I am finding it difficult to get along this line, there are so many! I have got to William Coghlan abt1835 Dublin, and possibly married Mary ? in 1861 and died in Lancashire 1898 (about 63yr old) Resided in Gorton area. 3 children, William 1860, Mary A 1863, and Andrew 1866- 1919 (and married Laura Jervis) Andrew and Laura were my great grandparents. I also heard through a family member that a Coghlan ancestor headed for Philadelphia. If anyone can help further, or may be connected, please get in touch. (formerly andy6196). Happy researching and best regards, Andy Coghlan.

Maurice Coghlan born 1844 in Cork Ireland..immigrated to Boston 1866 then later to North Dakota

I'm looking for information on Maurice Coghlan's parents/siblings. Maurice was born May 20th 1844 in Roberts Cove, Queenstown (renamed Cohb), County Cork Ireland, and emigrated to the US in 1866 via Boston. In 1871 he married Ellen Dorgon and started a family also in Boston. He later moved the family to North Dakota and some county history talks about a brother John, who came from Mass to help out. This John was supposed to have done woodworking on Pullman cars. Maurice's wife, Ellen Dorgan was also born in Cork on April 12 1842. Maurice's father might be Michael and Mother Ellen Draynan Kidney (some accounts say Catherine).
Coghlan Family

My husband and i are tracing back our family trees and we have hit a wall on his. His last name is Coghlan and is part of a branch of that family that has been in Philadelphia since the late 1800's. We have gotten as far as tracing it to John Coghlan (Coughlan) born around 1850 in Ireland and married to Ann or Anna. They made there way to Liverpool, England by the 1870's and had at least 6 kids all born in Liverpool. Their kids are names Joseph, John, Dennis, Thomas, Mary, and Ann. The whole family was in Philadelphia by 1891. Joseph is my husband's GGgrandfater, Dennis was a catholic priest, and the 2 daughters never married. We know the names, birth years, and death years of all those named above accept when thomas died. These dates were confirmed by my husband by finding there grave at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, PA John, Anna, and allthe children but Thomas are burried together.

If anyone has any info connecting them to Coghlans further back or anything more about the descendants of the other brothers, we'd love to hear it.

-Christine and Joseph Coghlan

Hi...

I think this William Coghlan is a relative. But not sure how.

I have found that my line of Coghlan's in Boston (Timothy Coghlan married Ellen Mccarthy) daughter Mary Isabella who married Edward J Longley who moved to Seattle, WA and had daughter May Cecilia. Mary Isabella died as Mary Langlois and husbands name on death certificate is Edward Langlois. Edward died in 1951 in Hennepin County Minnesota as Edward J Langlois. May's name was legally changed at the age of 12 to Mary Cecilia Langlois.

Also found that Timothy Coghlan came to US with a brother.

William in Seattle I think is an Uncle to my grandmother Mary Cecilia.... But haven't figured the link yet of how.

My Egan connection is with Tom Egan, who married my great aunt Mary Coughlin (also sp. Coghlan. She was born in 1858, but I don't have a DOB for Tom. Mary was raised in a townland about six miles outside Limerick. When she and Tom married, they moved to the city.

As for my Shaughnessy connection, Pat and Anne Shaughnessy were godparents to my great uncle Thomas Coughlin, and John and Mary Shaughnessy were godparents to my great uncle Michael Coughlin.

Regards,

Pat

I've noticed that you mention Egan and Shaughnessy in some of your e-mails. My grandmother was Catherine Agnes Egan from Limerick. Her mother's maiden name was Shaughnessy. Do you think you could help me delve farther back?
