If your first name is Marilyn and you're from Tampa Bay, then we have emailed re Benj. before. If you're a different researcher, then yes, I believe that Benj. & Tryphena are siblings. I believe that all siblings exc. Wm. moved to Oneida Co. with father John who d in 1819 intestate (without will) and named Benj. as his administrator. That doc. is the only item in the Oneida Co. file re John Cogswell (no other family members named exc. Benj.). Benj. & John Jr. are found as land owners in Western, Oneida Co. by 1814. I haven't found a burial site for Benj. but Cogswell genealogies claim he d in Oneida Co. John Jr. d in 1874 in Western, Oneida Co. I have his meager obit. He also appears in 1820 Western census, maybe later ones too. John Jr.'s birthdate on tombstone is Mar 14, 1781. Is Benj. older or younger? I am unsure. Check out probable son Henry who moved to Hayworth, MacLean Co., IL & appears in 1880 census w/mother Philena in household. Keep in touch. Sharon

I am trying to figure out if he is the brother of Tryphena Cogswell Martin. I think I found him in the 1830 census in Steuben,Oneida NY.
he may be the Benjamin named administrator of the estate of John Cogswell who d. 1819.I hope we can someday connect the dots. I am also interested in who this John Cogswell was who d. 1819. Is there some further info on that will?

Ms. Alden
While researching inquiries on the Cogswell Family, I came across your inquiry from Jan., 2007 and I was excited at the Listing of all the names on your message
Caroline Case-Cogswell was my Maternal Gr., Gr., Grandmother. She was Married to Charles P. Case from NY(??). I have been trying to find information on Charles's Family for quite some time but have been unsuccessful. After the 1870 Township of Otisco, Symaria, Ionia Co., Michigan census, Charles seemed to disappear and by the 1880 Litchfield, Hillsdale Co., census, she's listed as a Widow!
Caroline was the Daughter of Alanson Cogswell anshe was Born 2 Feb., 1833 in New York & Died: 27 March, 1887 in Homer, Calhoun Co., Michigan. My Great GrandMother, HARRIET AUGUSTA CASE-TURNER, was her oldest child. Caroline & Charles had Four Daughters; Harriet, Mary Florence & Francis
Caroline is Buried in Fisher Cemetery in Homer, Michigan Near her Older Sister, Lydia Ann Cogswell Church & her Family. It is believed that Alanson is also Buried there, but some older files have been lost due to poor record keeping. It's said he's buried in an Unmarked grave because of moved & missing headstones!!
If you would happen to have any info on Charles Case or his Parents & siblings, I would really appreciate any info you'd like to share!! Any info would be greatly appreciated, Thanks & thanks for your posting!!
Sincerely,
Gary 'Smokey' Naden
docnaden@yahoo.com

RESEARCHING ALANSON COGSWELL=1798-188? HILLSDALE, MICHIGAN

Mr. Bohn
I came across your reply below to a inquiry about Francis Beard-Cogswell & the info on Alanson, so I hope you don't mind my contacting you..
I have been researching my Maternal Gr.,Gr.,Gr.Grandfather
'ALANSON COGSWELL' b: 1798 in New York (??Oneida I think) and who died aft. 1880 in or around Litchfield, Hillsdale Co.,Michigan.
From what I've been able to find, I think that he is the son of WILLIAM COGSWELL & SUSANNAH BEARD. According to the COGSWELL"S IN AMERICA, Their Son Alanson "died in early life at sea"!! However, I feel he did not die and went on to marry & have children and lived into his 80's!
As a little kid, I remember my Great Grandma, Harriet Augusta Case-Turner telling me about her Grandpa who went to sea as a young man but came back, settled down and became a farmer never to return to the sea again!
My problem is trying to definately connect him completely!! I know by Census files that he came from New York, That he was Born in 1789, He fought in the War of 1812 in New York(76th NY Infantry)and that he had (at least) two Daughters. Lydia Ann Cogswell-Church b:30 June 1824 in Elba, Genesee, New York and d: 8 June, 1876 in Homer, Calhoun, Michigan AND Caroline Cogswell-Case b: 2 Feb. 1833 in New York & d:27 March, 1887 in Homer, Calhoun, Michigan.
If anyone in the Cogswell Association (ps By the way,I hope to be joining soon)has any info on ALANSON COGSWELL, I'd greatly appreciate all replys!! I've been working on him for quite some time and I feel that the Cogswells in America Listing him as died at sea is incorrect...
Thank you for your time..
Sincerely
Gary 'Smpkey' Naden
docnaden@yahoo.com

Re: Francis Beard Cogswell 1800-1850 Lancaster, Canada>Hamilton Co, Indiana
Roger Bohn (View posts) Posted: 15 May 2006 10:55AM
Classification: Query
Surnames: Cogswell

From Cogswells in America:

William(7) Cogswell, son of John(6) Cogswell, was born Feb. 25, 1777, in Stockbridge, Mass. Mr. Cogswell died in Macon, GA.
Their Children were:
- ***Alanson, b Jan 6, 1798 (he died in early life at sea).
I BELIEVE THAT THIS WAS MY Gr.,Gr.,Gr.
Dear Ms. Hirt,

I happened to come across one of your postings on the Ancestry Message Board referencing the Cogswell families in Michigan. I have been researching my Maternal side of our family for some time & I'm trying to find as much info as I can on ALANSON COGSWELL b:6 Jan., 1798, d: aft. 1880 in Homer Mich...

His Daughter, CAROLINE COGSWELL-CASE is my Maternal Gr.,Gr. Grandmother.

I do know that Caroline & Alanson lived with Alanson's other Daughter (LYDIA ANN COGSWELL-CHURCH, b:30 June, 1824 in Elba, NY, d: 8 June, 1876 in Home , Calhoun Co., Mich) in both Indiana & Michigan (ref U.S. census records) before Caroline Married Charles Case in 1858. I also have been able to find that Caroline, Lydia Ann & alot of Lydia's 'Church' family are buried in Fisher Cemetery in Homer, Mich.

(alot of info I know!) what I've been trying to find is more info on Alanson, his Wife's name,

other children and what ever other connections I can find..

I rember when I was little my Grandmother (HARRIET AUGUSTA CASE-TURNER) telling me that her Grandfather had been a Sailor in his younger years & I have found in the Cogswell's in America it says on page 420 that Alanson Cogswell "He Died in early life at Sea"!!

As you can see, my problem is proving "MY" Alanson Cogswell (Sailor & Farmer) & the Alanson Cogswell mentioned in the Cogswells in America, are one & the same!!

Same Birth date & all but trying to connect them is difficult!!

If you happen to have any info or Points of contact I can follow, I'd be verry appreciative.

Also, I have some info on the Case/Church/Turner family I'd gladly share...

Thank you for your time...

Sincerely

Gary 'Smokey' Naden

docnaden@yahoo.com
Hi Carol,
I am also researching ALANSON COGSWELL because my Maternal Gr.,Gr.Grandmother was CAROLINE COGSWELL-CASE one of the daughters of ALANSON COGSWELL..
Alanson was born in Jan. 6, 1798 in Oneida, Oneaid Co., New York and he Fought in the War of 1812. Alanson died sometime after 1880 in either Litchfield or Homer. In the 1880 Litchfield, Hillsdale Co., Mich. Census, He is still alive & living with Caroline & her daughters in Litchfield,Mich.
Caroline died in 1887 in Homer, Calhoun Co., Michigan & is buried in the same cemetery as her older Sister (Fisher Cemetery in Homer, Calhoun Co., Mich.) LYDIA ANN COGSWELL-CHURCH, who died in 1876 and was married to John Church. Per contact with a poc for Find-A-Grave, it is believed that ALANSON is also buried in Fisher Cemetery in one of the many unmarked gravesites, but as older cemetery records cannot be found (they were hand written on old brown paper bags and were lost to time), this is only a guess! I only know of his two daughters, but I'm sure there were other siblings and I've yet to find his wife's name..
If you have any info on Alanson & his family, I'd greatly appreciate any info..
Gary 'Smokey' Naden
docnaden@yahoo.com

I have been pursuing John Cogswell for nearly 2 yrs. I hope we're both talking about John Cogswell who marr Tryphena and then moved from MA (probably) to Western, Oneida Co., NY. Their children were Benjamin, Wm., Elizabeth/Betsey, John Jr., Tryphena Jr., and Sarah/Sally. I believe that John was b in CT or MA 1756-1758. The children range approx. 1775-1782 or so. Is this YOUR John Cogswell? There is a Cogswell Family Assoc., Office of the Secretary, 21321 107th Ave., Snohomish, WA 98296-7140. For $10 dues there's a newletter and there's also a web site.

John COGSWELL s/o Benjamin & Lois of Coventry CT

Seeking info on John COGSWELL - NOT Capt. John Cogswell of Washington Co., Whitehall, NY.

Capt. John & wife Hannah Roys are bur there. (His birthdate of 1 Sep 1759 is from Rev. War pension testimony, Wash. Co. Court House.) Date is incorrectly given as that of MY John Cogswell. Capt. John is likely NOT s/o Benjamin & Lois since children's names (Hannah, James, & Polly/Palina - all b in Castleton VT - & Happylona & Harry - b Whitehall) are not in Benjamin's family line.

However, my John's children - Benjamin, Wm., John (Jr.) Sally, Tryphena, & Betsey - are family names from Benjamin or John's wife (Tryphena poss. Squiers or Spurrier).

A John Cogswell died intestate in 1819 in Western, Oneida Co., NY. Sons Benjamin (admin. of his estate) & John J. are 1814 landowners there.

Can anyone connect MY John w/Benjamin or MY John via his children? I descend thru dau Tryphena Cogswell Martin.

Does anyone have more information about Bianca Cogswell b1848? She was sister of James K Cogswell and married John Lendrum Mitchell (a senator) but they divorced around 1877. Her parents were George and Celestia I believe.

I have found her in 1860 and 1880 censuses, and there are a few brief mentions of the divorce in the NY Times. I'm sure there must be more newspaper articles but not that I can find on Google.

Thanks,

Jenny

Mason George Cogswell, b England ca 1847, m Margaret Hopkins in PA

Researching my husband's g-grandfather MASON GEORGE COGSWELL born in England about 1847. He came to Schuylkill County PA and married MARGARET HOPKINS (born in Wales) around 1869-70. They lived first in St. Clair then in Shenandoah - both in Schuylkill County, PA. Mason worked for Margaret's father in his shoe factory/store. Mason & Margaret had 3 or more children and in March 1880, they buried three of them all in the same week (possibly due to diptheria). Their names were Georgie, Ada and Lizzie and they are buried at Odd Fellows Cem. in Shenandoah Heights, PA. Sometime before 1890 they moved to Manistee, Michigan. They are both buried there in Oak Grove Cem. along with another son named David. Two daughters survived them: Elizabeth (who never married or had children) and Lillian, my husband's grandmother. She returned to PA and married JOHN HOWARD GRAHAM and they had 6 kids. Just would like to know more about MASON & MARGARET, who their parents were, where they came from, what made them choose to move to Manistee, MI. Thanks!

This may not be the same person, but my ancestor is Jerry Cogswell (b. about 1850 in PA). He lived in Manistee, MI and had two sons die in 1897 and 1899. At least one of the sons died in an accident. Jerry died prior to 1901. He was married to Margaret Hopkins, who died in 1901. If there is any connection please reply. Thanks.

The Cogswell line you are referring to in Ipswich is descended from John Cogswell who originally was in a ship wreck off the coast of Maine at Penniquot Point. The ship was the Angel Gabriel. The migrated from Maine to Ipswich where they settled.

I can't believe I didn't see this post a year ago!
Any info your husband may have would be appreciated. These Cogswells are from Warwick ~1790. I'm thinking the last name may be from Coggeshall as well.

Thanks for the assist. That gives me a place to start. Like I said, the family has it's name just about everywhere once they arrived in OH and MI, but there's not a whole lot of specifics prior to that. You're right about the name Genessee, though. That particular place name is alive and well in MI, too! Thanks again!

New England Ancestors is heavily "Massachusetts" which is where the first Cogswells appeared, very early. You may have to do some digging in Connecticut before you get to Massachusetts.

Understanding and interpreting Census data is very helpful because comparing the information on one census with the information on an earlier one is useful in determining which families "might be" the right ones.

I found Alanson on the 1850 Census in Ashtabula, and his parents are right next door. Note that Lovina was born (theoretically) in about 1799, not 1791. That may help later... She and Henry list their birthplace as Connecticut. Joseph and Jane Palmer live with them, and although the relationship is not stated, the age of Jane matches the age of a daughter listed in the 1840 Census. At some stage, you may have to follow Jane and her husband to their death places and look for additional information along the way. Palmer is a name which is connected to Stonington, CT. originally.

In 1840, Henry is in Ashtabula. He is aged 40-50,
son aged 10-15, daughter age 15-20, wife aged 40-50. These match the 1850 information.

Looking for Henry in the 1830 Census, he isn't in Ohio yet. There is a Henry in Bethany, Genessee County, NY, with two young males, one of which is the right age to be Alanson, and one aged 15-20, who might be a brother of Henry. There are two little girls aged 5-10 years of age, which is a good fit for Jane S. (Palmer) in the 1850 Census...

I suggest you dig deeper in Genessee County. It was chock-a-block full of Connecticut people, some of my own ancestors among them. In fact, Genessee is a name that the settlers took with them from southeastern Connecticut (Madison and Guilford).

Ah, that clears things up! I've looked in Ancestry.com, HeritageQuest, and county by county through usgenweb. I've also talked to all the older individuals in the family, and the only one who had concrete info that got me this far has since died. However, I didn't know about newenglandancestors.org. I'll give them a try. Thanks!

I apologize. I phrased my statment poorly. It would help if you could tell us which books, magazines and databases you have used in your search, so that we don't waste time searching through the same material.

For example, I have searched through some Connecticut BMD databases and found nothing. If you have already searched at ancestry.com, newenglandancestors.org and HeritageQuest, that would be useful information to give us.

Well first, I was hoping someone else might have a connection to this family and be able to point me in the right direction... I found the Cogswell and Luke family in Ashtabula Co., OH, and I know where they were after they reached MI through birth, marriage, death and census records. Alanson was born in NY, so his parents had to have been in NY for that event, but I don't know where and have no info with which to narrow it down. I've searched in NY for Henry and Lovina. However, there were Cogswells in almost every NY county at one point, and there are a number of individuals named Henry. The records from OH and MI simply say NY. I've found no record of a marriage for that particular couple, a birth announcement of any kind, nor a census record. Does that help?
