Re: Cohen in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota - Can anyone help?

Years later.. But maybe still useful

My great grandfather Harry Cohen moved from Russia/lithuania to Des Moines with his parents and five siblings in 1892. They had lots of Chicago connections - it was the hub of the Russian Jewish world to them.

. One brother was involved in the (now forgotten) bundist movement and moved out to minnesota to join a bund farm. He p, Samuel Isaac Cohen and his wife Rebecca (Grinspan) Cohen left their rather -disastrous farm experiment pretty quickly. They spent sometime w a sister in S Dakota and a fair amount of time in Minneapolis. Samuel died in 1934 and his wife shortly after - some kids went back to Des Moines and some to NYC.

The family was in Minnesota - sometime farms, preferring the city though - from around 1925 to about 1938.

I myself am trying to learn more. Drop me a line at ptblack@hotmail.com if any of this sounds relevant.

I'll never understand why half my family went north to Minnesota while the other half went south to Alabama. Makes California look appealing....
Re: Cohen Benjamin or Ben

Hello there. Both my parents are deceased and when my mother was alive she couldn't give us much regarding her parents. My mother's father was Morris who was from England and born around 1889. Interesting, he had a very handsome brother named Ben. Both lived in the New York area. I think Ben's wife might have been named Gert? My grandfather Morris married Sophie Margolis(not sure about the last name spelling) All I know was she originally came from Russia. My grandparents were divorced when my mother, Charlotte, was very young. I didn't get to know my grandfather well, until he came to Long Beach, NY,so my mother can help take care of him. I remember seeing Ben as a little girl. I don't know if this is of any help.
With the last name of Cohen and being from England, this is so hard.

I don't think so. My Cohen relatives, much to my sorrow, seem to have all died out. I am finding some outsiders....but not Cohens. Unless grampa Harry or my dad had some by-blows I don;t know of....my brother and I are all that are left. I wish we were related ;>(

Trying to establish Rebecca Cohen parents, she was the 1st wife of Joel John Cohen and born C1800 dying in Manchester 1832. She was the sister I believe of Edward Daniel Cohen.

hi Lisa
the work you have done is mind blowing.. me I was ill and decided once and for all to find out about my Portuguese forbears...my Sephardi ancestry.. as we all have zillions of ancestors I decided to go back through my grandmothers line.. because this was the side of the family I was and am very close to. Then I said I will go back through the maternal line as Judaism itself does. (you always know who the mother is)
Hoping you find it interesting... Asher Cohen

phoebe Martin nee Peachey 1896- 1986

her mother Sarah Asher born 1870 (siblings Joseph Abraham Myer and Rachel .

her mother was Abigail nee Hart(1847-1906). married Morris(Moses) Asher(1846)in 1868

Now Morris I believe was the son of David Asher and Sarah Cohen and he had a sister called Deborah (he may have been born out of wedlock) they married in 1847.. but it is all vague... just maybe the cohens are also known up north as acohen (very strange)
Abigail was the daughter of Rachel Hart nee Martin(1812-1846) and Joseph Hart (1812)they married in the Great Synagogue 8th June 1836

Rachel was the daughter of Sarah Martin (nunes Martinez)(1790-1822) and Isaac Martin(nunes Martinez)(d1842) they were married in Bevis Marks Synagogue on the 2nd May 1809

Sarah was the daughter of Hannah nunes Martinez nee Toledano (1762-1847) born in Gibraltar and Abraham nunes Martinez (1765-1848) they married in 1783 at Bevis Marks Synagogue..

Hannah was the daughter of Ester (1719-1791 Gibraltar) and Abraham Toledano (1710-1784)

Prior to this the family probably came from Morocco and earlier Portugal and Spain

When I found this out it was like a completion as I had married a girl from Fez (brought up in Israel) whose father was a Rabbi.. and with out knowing anything about the above had a very Moroccan wedding for my daughter... nothing new

regards Kevin
Are there any Cohens on this thread who live in or near Oakland, CA

Hi,
If anyone can help me with this query, please email me directly at francescacumero@yahoo.com. This is my aunt's account and she allows me to use it for my research.
I'm trying to get an obituary from the Oakland Public Library for a WWII veteran named Arthur Cohen who died in Oakland on July 6, 1972. He is buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Oakland, CA. Here is his find a grave index: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Co...;. If he turns out to be the veteran I am looking for, (his CA Death index indicated that he was born in RI, so I'm pretty sure he's the man I'm seeking) born in Rhode Island in 1913 according to his enlistment record, then his WWII dog tag was found on a beach near Nice, France. I'm helping the person who found it to return it, free of charge, to his family. I'd like to try to get him family contact information so he can send it back to Arthur Cohen's family in time for the holidays and the library won't help me unless I mail in a request. If there is anyone on this list who can help with this request, that would be wonderful. Or perhaps you recognize the name or can put me in contact with the family? Sincerely,

Francesca Cumero
Angelo's Angels WWII Dog Tag Return Project
www.ww2tags.org

I have an Abigail Cohen that from her death certificate was born in 1799. I can find no birth for her at all. Father from 2nd marriage cert was Abraham Cohen, Confectioner. She is married as Abigail Asher widow. 8 yrs later she calls her son Moses Asher Rentell (& puts herself as Abigail Rentell late Asher originally Cohen). I can't find a marriage for her to ? Asher. Guessing from her sons name he was Moses Asher who died bfr 1844 possible the brother of David Asher.

Any info gratefully received

My great grandfather was born about that year and was also called Moses born in Russia or Prussia, and was a bread baker. The only thing I know about his wife was her name was Jane, but they used to change them to be more bristish. His first born son was my grandfather Charles about 1891. He could have changed his name from George. He was a master tailor. His first marriage was to Annie Leveinsohn and then to my grandmother Ellen Lewis of Manchester tailors.
Do you have any other similar names? We could be related by cousins.

Having trouble researching my great, great grandfather, Isadore Cohen. I'm told he was a Russian Jew who fled to America with several children. The story goes that he changed the last name of his sons to Taylor (his profession) and sent them to foster care, while keeping the girls to raise on his own. His son Philip Lester Taylor was my great grandfather, and the Taylor name carried through him to his only child, my grandmother Viola Taylor. I also know of a Jennie and Charlie but am told the last name Gray or Grey was also involved.

Genevieve Goldman (Cohen-Cole)

Can anyone help me find Genevieve?

I've reached a dead-end looking for this elusive woman.... My Great-grandfather died very early, and so did his son (my grandfather). I'm trying to track down this family without the benefit of my elders. I know absolutely no one in this family at all, so if you think you might be related, send a message and let's look. :)

Ultimately, I'm looking for records of my great-grandmother Genevieve.

Family legend says that after her husband Mihail/Michael Cohen/Cole (b 1887, Vilna Russia to Morris Cohn and Tillie Shapiro) died in 1936, the eldest son Lawrence (b 1914-1916) was married to Sophie Schwartz in Ohio. I don't know what happened to them, except some vague statement of that family living somewhere in the northeast.

After this, Genevieve took her remaining son Bertram from Ohio to California. She lived the rest of her life there, and died in California before my parents even met each other.

I've pieced together what I can, and am hoping that someone will recognize this and help me out. Census reports and death certificates all give her name as "J Genevieve" or "Jean G". My guess is that her name was "Jean Genevieve", but I don't have any documentation that has both names. She was born between 1896-1898 in New York. I'm guessing Buffalo or thereabouts. She was married somewhere around 1914-1916. Her first child Lawrence L Cohen was born in Buffalo NY around this time. Between the birth of this child and the 1920 census, the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio and the second son Bertram was born around 1921. The family name was then changed from Cohen/Cohn to Cole between 1920 and 1930.

Census reports also say her family was German or Polish, although family legend says she was "French", but I have no proof of this.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, please reply to this thread, or message me on ancestry. Thanks in advance for your time and help!

Cheers!

Laurie

I spoke recently with Rudy Jacobs who mentioned your name. When I did a search I came across the following message. I am Austin Cohen, grandson of Hannah Jacobs Cohen (son of Emanuel (Manny or Martin) Cohen). I did have the pleasure of meeting your father twice over the years, once when I was in college, I visited a friend in Illinois and we stopped at the Univ. of Illinois. My father said that his cousin was a professor there and I visited him and your mother. Later when I was considering law schools, I went to visit Dickinson law school in Carlisle and my father told me to look up Norman since he had moved there. Again, I met him and your mother for lunch. I could certainly see some familial similarities between him and my father. I am not sure I can provide you much Jacobs information, but I would be happy to try and, of course, it is nice to connect with family members (maybe a way to verify some of the incredulious stories my father has told us over the years about his parents). Feel free to e-mail me at austin_cohen@yahoo.com. Take care

Austin Cohen

I was just looking around the internet for family information when I found this post. I don't think that who ever you are looking for is named Borochok because that is my surname. My family originally came from western Ukraine. They then went to Brazil when they could not get direct passage to America and from Brazil, they immigrated to the United States. I have no information in my family of the Borochok's ever stopping by in England or being related to a Cohen family.

I hope that eliminates one possibility for you and makes it easier to search for whatever you are searching for.

Dear Judy,

I'm also looking for Cohen/Cohn from Wilna/Vilna, Lithuania. They are great-great grandparents, Emigration around 1887 or so. Is this about the right time? I can tell you that the Russian spelling is Kagan, so if you look in any Lithuanian databases be sure to try that spelling as well as Cohen. I would also suggest that you use the name translator to find the yiddish equivalents for the american names. You could also try to find the naturalization paperwork, as this also has original names on it, which can really help (ex: Taube Kagan would translate over to Tillie Cohen). Nathan would be Naftali or Nachum. Frances won't translate over, but I have a Frances in my family who has parents from Vilna- why your post caught my attention. The original name may be Frumme? When Frances emigrated with her parents, her name was changed over to Frumme (not a yiddish name). Maybe this will help?

Cheers,
JWP

Hello Evelyn,

Thank you for reaching out! My siblings and I are still in shock that we never knew about this part of our family. I am looking forward to having a chance to speak with Lynn this week and welcome the opportunity to be in touch with you and Abe as well when it is convenient for you.

Warm regards,

Kelly

My husband is Abe Cohen, half-brother to Julius. Abe is much younger & never knew the children of his father's first marriage. We (very fortunately) located Lynn through this message board. Would love to be in touch with you.

Evelyn
