I looked through several Williams, and one of them I cannot find a wifes name, only the childrens...and its been so long I am not sure if I got their names from a census or what, without looking into my notes.
Hoping I will hear back from you soon!

Found this in the newspaper "The Saint Paul Globe",
St. Paul, Minn., dated January 2, 1900, page 5:

SHOWING HIS GOLD
--------------
A Crookston Man Displaying Alaska
Nuggets in Chicago
--------------
CHICAGO, Jan. 8. - C. P. Cohoon, of
Crookston, Minn., arrived in Chicago
yesterday with $600 worth of nuggets
picked up in the Porcupine mining district
of Alaska. One of the nuggets contained
$64 worth of gold, and according to its
owner any man who knows a nugget
when he sees one can pick up an av-
erage of $80 a month in McKinley creek,
where he found the nuggets he brought
to Chicago. Mr. Cohoon went to the
Porcupine district a year ago, and has
spent most of the time laying out claims,
building cabins and prospecting. He be-
lieves the Porcupine district is rich in
gold, and says it has been overlooked
by Klondikers in their effort to get to
better advertised fields.
--------------------

Hope this helps someone,
David M.
FROM SOLDIER TO BRICK MAKER:
The life of William Cahoone, c. 1633 to 22 June 1675
By - Stephen Lance Calhoun -- 30 June 1987 -- PREFACE
"William Cahoone was most likely the first member of Clan Colquhoun to come to North America. He came as an indentured servant in punishment for his service as a Scottish soldier in the royalist Army of the English Civil War in 1650. The indenture taught William the trade of brick making, which he worked at for the rest of his life. He was killed by Wampanoag Indians in the first day of King Philip's War. His death in 1675 ended what some people would call a tragic life of 42 years, but one that could be called exciting and successful. His seven children and their descendants spread out all over North America, becoming a large and proud Scottish-American family."
contact me if you like fred.cohoon at comcast.net

No relation. I just enjoy browsing through family Bibles up for auction on eBay and trying to connect any genealogical info to those that may find it of interest or worth pursuing. I am NOT the seller, nor do I have any intent on purchasing.

New information regarding Martha Freeman Cohoon-Davis (my paternal great, grandmother) of Beverly, Massachusetts ... death certificate indicates father was "Foster Cohoon " born in Nova Scotia and mother as "Sophia Freeman" also born in Nova Scotia. Martha was born in Port Medway, Nova Scotia. Although her death certificate does not indicate date of birth, her age at death was 67 years, 11 months & 5 days. The date of death is listed as July 27, 1922. The death certificate bears her maiden surname as "Cohoon." Martha died of Chronic Myocarditis.
Interesting fact: while researching Beverly City Hall registries, I noticed that her father-in-law Ira Davis-Ricker died on June 12, 1873, in Beverly Farms, Beverly, Massachusetts of congested lungs. The next entry, immediately following her father-in-law, was her own father's death registration, also occurring on June 12, 1873, in Beverly Farms, Beverly, Massachusetts and cause of death also listed as congested lungs. How odd that both father and father-in-law passed away on same day, same illness, in same community.

Morton Cohoon

I'm looking for Morton Cohoon born abt. 1858, I think in Berrien County. His first name may be Rudolph or Randolph. Parents were Benjamin Franklin Cohoon (Cahane) and Sarah Melissa Spangenburg. I believe Morton died 1 Jul 1906 and his funeral was in Shepard, Mi, but I don't know where he died or was buried. Morton married Ada May Sparks about 1878 and had at least 1 child, Arthur. I can't find anything more on Morton.

Any help would be appreciated.

John

Ashley, it would be very helpful if you could give us some sort of a date, possibly an age estimate, as there are a lot of William Cohoons...its really a common family name.
Also if you can give us some idea of where these folks lived
it may help to narrow things down a bit.
Our Cohoons lived in Michigan mostly, but some moved to other areas. Wish I could help you more, but I need some direction here.
Good luck!
Doreen

What happened to Ida May Cohoon (Thebes, Ill area 1920)?

I am searching for a death record, final resting place, any information on Ida May, maiden name Cohoon (born abt. 1888), married Jess Davis (abt. 1904), then Samuel Benefield (abt. 1910). Ida had two children, George Davis (born abt. 1905) and Iola Benefield (born abt. 1911). Ida May Cohoon Davis, disappeared some time between 1912 and 1919. Family gossip states that Ida and Samuel both died in a black powder factory explosion/fire at Thebes around 1917-1919, but Samuel Benefield did not die in that fire, so it may be true that Ida did not die either, or then again, maybe she did since no one has record of her after that. Any info is appreciated ... rescue(at)teknett(dot)com

Steve

I also found the Cohone's on the 1790 Census for Surry County while trying to research an Adam Cowan (born abt. 1770) who resided in Buncombe County, NC.

There was a David Edward Cowen/Cowan (born in NC) who settled an estate for either his father or brother Adam Cowen/Cowan in 1836 in Gascoande County, MO. David was married in Surry County, NC to a Telitha Martin. This family may be related to your Cohoon's.

Our Adam first obtained land grants in 1800 in Buncombe County with the name Coons. Family stories claim that the name was orginally Colquhoun, and they first settled in Canada, then PA, VA and eventually NC.

Check RootsWeb Maries County, MO and also the World Connect Project.

Nancy

John and Sarah Lamb Cohoon just happen to be my Grandma Carver's great grandparents. I do have some of the Cohoon family genealogy that her twin sister did with her daughter's several years ago. I can help you some but am not too sure how much help I can be. They eventually moved to spencer or warrick county, Indiana. I am a descendant of their son Russell who according to my records was their first child to be born in Indiana. the listing of their children that I have is John jr.(1809 KY), Joseph (1814 KY), Robert ( 1816 KY), Thomas Mason (1819 KY), Russell (1822 IN), Sarah Ann (1826 In), Hoza( Ocie could find no record for this one), William (1830 In), and Greenberry (1834, In). I know that Greenberry is buried in one of the Cohoon cemeteries in Spencer county and I am pretty sure that Russell is also. Just email me if you would like any more information I will try to find out for you.

I am the widow of Harry George Cohoon, son of William Wilson Cohoon, son of Jacob Anderson Cohoon, son of Barnabas Cohoon. I would appreciate copies of anything you might have in regard to any of the family. We are getting serious about finding records now, with little to go on. The B. F. Snyder, Benjamin Franklin Snyder that succeeded Jacob Anderson Cohoon as postmaster was a brother of Harry's mother, Clara Kathryn Snyder Cohoon. Yes, I am aware that some of the family did and do spell our name Cahoon. In fact, some of Harry's cousins used that spelling. Thanks so much for your help.

Would like to correspond with any descendants of Barnabas (Barney) Cohoon b. 1816 d. 1895. I believe that Barney is a brother to my gr-gr-grandfather William Cahoon/Calhoun b. 1814 probably Surry County, NC. d. 1903 in Ashe County, NC. My gr-grandfather was Barnabas (Barney) B. Calhoun b 1834/7 d 1930 in Avery County, NC. I found Barnabas in the 1840 Ashe County Census but he disappears after that. I had no other information on him until I saw a migration of Barney from North Carolina to Missouri then to Kansas, plus the entries found below. We believe that William & Barney's parents were James Cahoon/Calhoun b. c1789 d after 1870 and Catherine (maiden name unknown). Catherine's birthplace was most likely New Jersey as several of her children place her birthplace there. I have found James Cahoon in the 1810 Surry County, NC. Census. in 1790 if found a William Cohone, Sr. and a William Cohone, Jr, so it is possible that James' father was William and his grandfather was a William.

Regards Steve Peters sspeter2@bellsouth.net
