Jean Shmookler Coia, 97, of Treesdale, Gibsonia, formerly of Philadelphia, died Saturday morning, July 9, 2011, under the care of the Good Samaritan Hospice Unit at Concordia in Cabot. Born Jan. 18, 1914, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Minnie Finestein Shmookler. She was the widow of George B. Coia, whom she married Aug. 29, 1930, and who died April 9, 1980. Jean and her late husband, George, had owned Ferguson's Jewelry Store in Philadelphia. She was a member of the Treesdale Country Club. She was the beloved mother of Lorraine Hanna and her husband, Russ, of Gibsonia, and the late Loretta Coia and Barbara Ruggieri; mother-in-law of Carlo Ruggieri, of New Jersey; sister of Laura LaSalvia, of Florida; and greatest grandmother in the world to five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six sisters. Her greatest joys were her children, family and friends and playing bridge. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Holy Cross Cemetery, 626 Baily Road, Yeadon, PA 19050. The Rev. Judy Buck-Glenn will officiate.
