Hi Vanessa I am Ronnie's daughter (i.e. Gusto Ronald Coia, Goliardo's son, born in 1942) I just spotted this message. Hmmm not sure about the moustache, I think he grew one once, but didn't keep it for long. He was an accountant for most of his working life but loved cars and used to keep several classic cars in his large garage at home in London so that could be what you are thinking of?

Sofianna

Hi,

Yes I'm still in Ch, been living on the peninsula for a few years now and moved to Diamond Harbour at the weekend!
I would love to visit Filignano, it's definitely on my list!

Lanark is not so far away from Bellshill, where I'm from. My great grand parents owned and ran several businesses from Bellshill, including an ice cream parlour. Unfortunately they were all lost through gambling debts.

My nona, who married into the family was from Larkhall which is pretty much next door to Lanark.

Funny seeing someone with the same surname as me, don't get to see it often.

Jac

Hi Vanessa,

I'm Carmela's daughter and I remember your grandmother Cissie, I used to see her when I visited your great-grandmother Mary. I had no idea that Gusto had left her, I was probably to young to realise what was going on. I have a vague memory of your father and his sister but it was mainly your great-uncle Eugene and your Aunt Pina that I remember. Your grandfather Gusto used to live in Sauchihall street when I last saw him in the late 70's. Goliard was around at the same time living near the University while I was a student there and causing mischief with unpaid rent. I no longer live in Scotland but in London. If I can help in any way just let me know

My granny Cissie Coia quite often spoke of Carmella. Cissie was from Larkhall, Lanarkshire. Her real name was Elizabeth but everyone called her Cissie. She married Gusto Coia (Goliardo's Brother). Cissie also worked in the 'family business' around the same time. I live in Glasgow with my husband and three children.

Vanessa

Hi there, My name is Vanessa Coia. I was born in Bellshill. My dad Tommy was Gusto's son. Gusto of course was Goliardo's brother and Ronnie's uncle. Im pretty sure I met Ronnie once when Gusto took me to a casino in Glasgow. Did he have a mustache and did he own a car garage? Am I gettig him confused with Peter?? I met Goliardo quite a few times, he often visited my granny Cissie with whom I lived with. These visits were generally very early in the morning with Goliardo looking smart in his suit having just walked it from Glasgow to Bellshill! Gusto, my grandfather (Cissie's Husband) left Cissie when their kids Maria, Tommy (my dad) and Peter were quite young (my dad is now 63!) Gusto got with a woman called Mary and they had 2 sons Ronnie & Lawrence. Gusto and Cissie have sadly both passed away. Cissie is buried in Bothwell Park Cemetery near Bellshill. Gusto's mum Mary and Dad Agostino are buried there too.

Vanessa

Hello Albert, my Grandfather was Guiseppe Coia of Rutherglen, Glasgow, and my Great Uncle was Nicholas. All of our family were born in Fillignano, Guiseppe and Nicholas's Mother was a French lady called Bertha Caron. My Mother remembers vividly Nicky, as the family called him, visiting with his children to the house on Rutherglen. My Father was Clemente Coia who we sadly lost in 2001. Wondered if you know that your dad lived in Paris for a while, and stories to tell. My Mother has many family photos including many of your dad with his accordian.

I am a bit confused - my dad was the only Gusto I know of that generation of the family, although I believe he might have been named after someone further up the tree. Although everyone called him Ronnie of course which has caused some confusion in the past!

Feel free to email me direct on sofianna.kuiti @ yahoo.co.uk if you want to stay in touch. I haven't had the chance to do our family tree properly yet but hope to one day. My brother Jamie is in Shepherds Bush and I know he has already started tracking down a few other Coias

We are 4th cousins. I remember your father from when I was a little girl. I am sorry to hear that he has died. If I am right he lived in London. My mother was Carmela, I don't know if your father ever mentioned her. She came to stay with your great grandmother after the war and worked for her. She was very fond of your grand mother, was her name Doreen or Noreen? I knew your grandfather well, he always called me his niece, which of course I was not. He was character, to say the least! I now live in London, as I believe you do too.

Coias in France - Lille and surrounding areas

I have recently learned that my great grandfather Ernesto Coia may have been born in Lille, France sometime around 1870 - 1880. His father was Antonio Coia and his mother was Antonia di Silvestro of Castelnuovo al Volturno in Molise, Italy. It is interesting that a french artist from Lille - Charles Moulin - came from Lille to Castelnuovo and remained there until he died. Moulin is well known in Castelnuovo and is rumored to have designed a Coia crypt in the Castelnuovo cemetary.
Does anyone have any information on any Coia's in Lille, France? Ernesto had a child with Carmela D'Onofrio, who is Alberto Coia, my grandfather, who was born in Vienna, Austria in 1902, but grew up in Castelnuovo.
I am looking for any information on Ernesto.

Thank you!

Coias from Tocco da Casauria

Hi, I'm doing some research on my family so that I can claim Italian citizenship.

It seems that my great grandfather, Nicolo Coia, b. ~1890, came from Tocco da Casauria and moved to Barre, VT in around 1906 before moving to Hartford, CT. I can't find his exact Date of Birth, which I will need to request his birth certificate. He married Michelina Spera.

His sister, Annunziata Coia (Later Paglia) also came over in the U.S. in around 1911. It seems she joined her brother in Barre, then moved to Concord, NH with her husband Giovanini/John.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the names of the parents of Annunziata and Nicolo Coia?

Seeking information on Ernesto Coia. My grandfather Alberto Coia was born 13 Oct 1902 in Vienna, Austria while Ernesto was traveling as a musician. Ernesto was married to Carmela D'Onofrio. Ernesto's parents are believed to be from Castelnuovo al Volturno, as were Carmela's parents.
It is also believed that Ernesto lived in Lille in France for a period, then may have gone to Scotland in the early 1900's.
Dear Sofianna,
> How delightful to hear from you. I made inquiries several years ago,
> when I was planning a trip to London and thought it would be a real
> treat to see Ronnie again. As it happened, the trip was
> postponed and I haven't made it back to Great Britain in over 20
> years. I am now an architect living in Seattle, Washington and would indeed love to hear from your Dad.
> My e-mail address is abeeman@beemanarch.com.
> Regards,
> Ann
>
Hi Arthur

Not sure if you will get this reply. I have just found the original posting by Ann about my dad, Gusto Ronald Coia ("Ronnie" as he is known) and have replied to her. Although you hadn't heard of my Dad, it sounds like he may actually be a distant relative of yours after all. Although Ann said Naples, his family is also from Filignano originally. Most of his family are indeed based up in Glasgow , we are the 'London branch' so to speak!

I met him in London in the late 60's where he was working as an accountant. Since I am returning to London for a visit, I have thought of looking him up. Is he in your database?
