Yes, I do subscribe to Ancestry. I just recently joined Archives.com and FamilySearch.org. For some reason I had'nt come across that info yet.

His death certificate shows James O as his father, but that is HIS name. I was hoping it showed James M. But it has to be the right one. Georgia Powell is shown as his mother, which fits my Ella Georgia Norah Powell.

I appreciate your help very much.

If you ever need photos, I have several and expect to get even more. My grandmother is going through her things and knows that I am the only family member interested in our history., so she's trying to make sure I receive these items.

Thanks again.
Sherri

Sherri, this link will take you to a photo of the marker for James Ona Coker on Find A Grave.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Co...;

Do you have a subscription to Ancestry? I located James in the 1910 and 1920 census. Carrie Frances Coker and husband are living close by James Ona Coker in the 1920 census.

Beth

Beth, thank you for such a quick reply.

After several months of research, and MUCH thanks to other people's genealogy websites, I feel pretty confident about the info leading down to James J. Coker. After that I'm not so sure, simply because of the handwritten info from Granny. It doesn't quite match up.

This is a list of her parents and siblings exactly how she wrote it:

Carrie Frances Coker=Elledge
Died the 28th of March-1975
Buried in California

James Ona Coker Died year Robert was born (that would be 1943)
Buried at Mountain Peak-Ellis County

Joseph Layflate Born in Henderson Co
Buried in Tennessee-Died 1925

Nettie Coker Born in Henderson Co
She Died Buried Athens Cemetery

Jennie Coker Born Baxter Texas
Buried there I guess

My Mother Ella Georgia Norah Powell was buried
also in Athens Cemetery

My daddy James Matterson was buried at Tissemengo Oklahoma

Ella Jenette Coker -Phelps

Mae Isiabell Coker 1896 Jan 14th

Corra Ellen Coker-Born 1901

THIS IS THE END OF HER LIST

I am definitely researching all this, I just hoped someone might already have some of my missing pieces. It seems so crazy that the generations closest are the ones I have trouble with! I know times were hard and my great grandmother was raised by siblings and aunts & uncles because both her parents died when she was young. I don't know how or where.

Thank you so much for taking a look.

Sherri

Yes, James J Coker is enumerated in the 1850 census. William J Coker is in the household b. about 1846. I have not researched William J Coker. James Coker married a Corley so maybe descendants of the Corley family have researched your family. To help I need birth and death dates and places.

Wow, Charlotte. Great to hear from you. Yes, Steve and I both agree that Daniel "Doc" Perry Coker was probably a son of William and Jemima Coker. From memory don't recall why but we decided his name was actually Daniel.
Husband told me I could draw my social security this year. I am like am I that old!
Anyway I am still the adminstrator of the Family Tree Coker Surname site and no one has been tested from the line of Philip Coker. Would be wonderful if you could find someone to test. I am also a volunteer adminstrator on a wiki, WeRelate.org. Presently cleaning up my pages on the family of James M. Coker. Need to finish the Coker lines and get to my other ancestors. I promised to enter data on my Jones line but have not finished. Cousin is probably disappointed. The Coker line just has a way of grabbing me. Also on a Coker mailing list but is primarily Georgia Cokers but our Cokers were in Georgia before Alabama. Anyway love hearing from you. Keep in touch.

This seems to be my line of Cokers but I've got a lot of gaps. If someone could help me I really would appreciate it.

My great grandmother was Mae Isabell Coker. Her handwritten notes that I found say that her father was James Matterson Coker and her mother was Ella Powell. It also says his brothers were George, John and Bud. His sisters were Frances and Ella.

In another handwritten note (by her daughter, my grandmother) it says that HIS father was Bill Coker and his grandmother was a Crumpton.

I believe she is wrong. I believe that Bill was his GRANDFATHER and that his father was James J. Coker (mother Eliza E. Coker).

Does anyone have any information on these people?

Sherri
Yes, Beth - it's really me. I'm still around but not kicking much as the old saying goes. I had a pile (BIG) of unfiled Coker stuff and have been working on it, page by page, for about three weeks. Needed to see if someone else was looking for one of the Coker characters, went on to this site, and saw your message.

I agree with Steve Coker that the real name of the subject was Doctor Perry Coker; he's listed as Dock P. on the 1870 Henderson Co., TX census. Two little clues led to think he was the son of William C. and Jemima Crumpton Coker: he married in Shelby Co., AL, and he named a son William C. (b ca 1869). No more proof but if this hadn't already occured to you, it might be a starting place.

Regards,

Charlotte

I also have that picture . I know I am related to the Cokers because I heard my mother talk about our families. I am the granddaughter of James Madison Gipson his mother was Elizabeth Betsy Hill who married Andrew Gipson (son of Allen Gipson and Sarah Anna Long) I want to know who Elizabeth Betsy Hill was and who her mother was. She was full blooded Indian according to my grand father he was very dark black eyed and the Indian showed in him.Perry Hill suppose to be her father but who was her mother that is where the Indian came in not through the Hills.

I have been doing some Coker research and although this is not in the direct line of my research, you may want to check William "Buck" Coker b. 1769, brother of Leonard Coker and son of Charles Coker, b. virginia.

I have read several stories that state that Buck married two different Cherokee women.
I'll work on the Durant, OK connection to see what I can find out. All I know of Rand is what my father told me. He was married and moved to Arizona. That's where he died according to my dad. Rand was a heavy drinker who moved around a lot.

Josephine Coker, the mother of Elizabeth, Rosie and Rand, married John Wallace later in life (not sure what happened to her first husband) and was at the wedding of my great-grandmother Elizabeth to John Barnes. That info comes from the family Bible that I now have. Josie died in Roff, OK but I have not been able to locate her grave.

Homer Wallace was the son of Josephine and her second husband. His family lived in the northwest part of the US (Oregon, I believe) and he died there. He has several descendents who are on ancestry.com.

As I was looking at the handwritten pages, I realized that the one that says that James M Coker's father was "Bill Coker" was written by my grandmother (Mae's daughter.)

I think she was mistaken and that Bill Coker was James' GRANDFATHER, not his father. I believe Bill was married to a Crumpton.

I believe that James M. Coker's father was James J. Coker.

I found a James J. and Eliza E. Coker with several children that match up with what my great grandmother wrote.

I'm having trouble locating MY Cokers. They don't seem to connect to all these others.
I have a handwritten page from my Great Grandmother Mae Isabell Coker (Darby). She tells me this:

Father: James Materson (Madison?)Coker died OK
Mother: Ella Georgie Norah Powell died TX
Brother: James Ona Coker died 1942 Ellis Co TX
Sister: Carrie Frances Coker (Elledge)died 1975 CA
Sister: Ella Jenette "Nettie" Coker (Phelps)
Brother: Joseph Lafayette Coker died 1925 TN
Sister: Hettie Coker died TX
Sister: Jennie Coker (died as infant?)
Sister: Cora Ellen Coker (Hollis)

I do know that her parents died of pneumonia when she was very young and she was raised by siblings and aunts and uncles.

She says her daddy's father was Bill Coker and his grandmother was a Crumpton.

I have a lot more info, but none of it ties in with the census records or other people's family trees.

I would appreciate any leads or guidance.

Thanks so much!
Sherri

I am trying to find information on my paternal great-grandmother Julia Coker. She was born in Birta, Yell County, Arkansas in the mid-late 1800's. She married a Hillard/Hilliard, everyone called him Fate. They had 4 or 5 children at this time I can not remember as it has been quite somtime since I have looked at my information. Their daughter Theo was my paternal grandmother. My grandmother hardly ever talked about her family. I just know that she was born in Birta, she marred the Hillard, they had the 4 or 5 children and she is buried in an unmarked grave in a Birta Cemetery. Any and all information anyone could or would share will be greatly appreciated. In advance Thank You very much. [They were the parents of James Thacker (who married Parolee Smith) and Francis Marion Thacker (who married Nancy Elizabeth Kemp in 1866 in Autauga Co.
I have been researching the Coker family for one of Isom, Jr.'s sons and have quite a bit of information. We discovered that Isom's daughter was confused regarding her father's mother. She just remembered hearing she was named after her grandmother Tabitha Jane and just assumed this was her paternal grandmother. It turns out she was her maternal grandmother. Isom's mother was Cora. Unfortunately, now his obituary is incorrect and has caused a lot of confusion. Anyway, I have the marriage records of James and Rachel, Isom and Mahala and Isom and Cora. I also have quite a few obituaries as well as a copy of the article regarding Edward Coker's death. I will be happy to help you with anything I can. Do you have somewhere that I can contact you other than a public board?

Bobby: Please tell me wher eyou got that info on Dicey, my family has been trying for years to establish who our Dicey Coker was. We did not know her fa was a Yoakum or mom a Coker, she simply used the name of Dicey Coker on her marriage to John L Goats. in 1852 in Pope Co, Arkansas. Our family has always said John said she was part Indian, and we wondered where from, and who her family may have been, I have always wondered if Dicey was just a nickname and if that is why we could not find her family roots. I would love to talk to you more about this line. needing help here. She is my grt grt grandmother.
Deborah... email me at cinnamon2347@sbcglobal.net ..please
