I am pretty sure we are all talking about the same family, I am going to ask my mother for some photos. My mothers middle name is concetta and my aunt is Loretta. They are all named after their aunts. Please check my family tree under Fiorillo/Ranucci, I have a bunch of colangelo's in there.

FYI, the Colangelo's are all on my mothers fathers side. My grandfather Peter who died in 1940's or so, that is his mothers maiden name. Lauretta Colangelo

Thomas, Tucker County, West Virginia is a good distance from Delbarton, Mingo County, West Virginia. Not that it's impossible for family to have moved into two different areas of WV. Nick's first marraige record lists his parents as Gionanni Battista Colangelo and Fortunata Coletta and his second marriage record lists his parents as "John" and "Jenny" Colangelo. John being the American version of Giovanni and Jenny pulled from the air by Nick's American wife I assume...lol

The man you speak of who was once the Mayor of Thomas was Joe DePollo. A member of the other(as we call them) DePollo family. My great-grandfather Joseph DePollo was a different Joe DePollo who lived in Thomas, WV and operated the DePollo store.

Currently there's a Mayor Quattro in Thomas, and guess what my Maternal ancestors were Quattro's (originally Quattrocchi) and we're not related to the family of Mayor Quattro. In fact when I saw him this past September he even remarked that he too didn't know how that could be.

Whenever I visit relatives in Thomas or Davis WV I make a trip to Mt. Calvary cemetery in Thomas. My Mom or one of my aunts or uncles would always point out each family members gravesite. When I saw another DePollo or DiPaolo or another Quattro or Quattrocchi than the ones they were pointing out they would say "that family isn't related to us". I always found it strange because the birth towns were often the same. Having these two family lines in the same WV towns makes it really challenging.

Years ago the parish priest wouldn't help us with research stating "if I let you see those records you'd be shriveled" as if there was some sort of secret. For years we've joked about being threatened with 'shrivelment'. This past September I was able to research those records and didn't find any secrets.

On top of that, all of the DePollo's (DiPaolo) and Quattro's (Quattrocchi) originally came from the Abruzzi Region of Italy, the Province of L'Aquila, the city of Sulmona or one of it's surrounding villages such as Intradaqua or Badia.

I've been to those cities and villages three times visiting the birthplace of my grandparents and searching the cemetery in Intradaqua for grave markers to provide dates and family links. On my first visit I was able to get a copy of the original Italian birth certificate for my grandfather Antonio Ricardo DiPaolo from the city records office in Sulmona. He was brought to the USA by his father Guissepi 'Joseph' DiPaolo 'DePollo' around 1903.

Visited Thomas WV in the early 1960's. We had a family reinion in the late 70s or early 80s in Egg Harbor,NJ and there was a relative there reportedly the mayor of Thomas, WV
I've been working with my family to identify this man.

My great-grandfather emigrated to Thomas, West Virginia to try coal mining and eventually opened a general store. To my knowledge none of them were shoemakers.

Anthony Richard DePollo, who had lived in Detroit, Michigan was my grandfather. He was not a 'shoemaker' by trade, but was a finish carpenter and retired from that trade. His father owned and operated the DePollo Store in Thomas, WV.
After his death we took my Grandfather back to Thomas where he is buried in the Catholic Cemetery.

Eventually the store ownership and operation transferred to John DePollo, my grandfather's younger brother. Grand-Uncle John ran the store until his death. After his death the store was sold and is now known and operated as "The Purple Fiddle".

There were two different families of DePollos in Thomas, WV and the small surrounding villages during the coal mining heydays. These families both show decendancy from the Abruzzo area of Italy, the Province of L'Aquila, the city of Sulmona or the village of Introdaqua, yet when asked they say they are not related. I have been researching this as best possible for the last twenty-five years and still haven't found the link that I know must exist.

Last September (2010) I visited the Archdiocese of Wheeling West Virginia and reviewed their church record micro-fiche files for nearly four hours. It was a great place to dig for family history (and there was no fee).

I know who my Grandfather's parents were and who their parents were. I know who my Grandfather's siblings were. I don't know if my great-great grandfather had any other children than my great-grandfather and nothing about great-great grandfather's birthdate, marriage date, death date or parents.

I hope this helps you and if you need any further information reply to this message. If you can provide any information that I might find interesting, useful or whatever I'd welcome it.

Her name is Jenny Colangelo (1918-2006) and married Nicholas Catalfamo (1917-1986) in Schenectady in 1945. They then moved to New Jersey where they lived until their deaths.

If you have any information I would like to hear from you.
OMG! It's so great to finally chat with someone who may be part of our Colangelos!

George Coletta born OCt 12, 1891 in Sant Agata di Puglia filed declaration of intent in Williamson, Mingo County, West Virginia. He was living in the same area as Nick Colangelo. George then moves back up north to the New York area I believe. I have only recently started researching the Coletta name because I only recently found a marriage record for Nick with his parents names listed.
You can email me at colanglo@verizon.net
Maybe we can compare notes and see if we can make a connection.
Thanks!

Looking for information on Giovanni Battista Colangelo and wife Fortunata Coletta and their son Nicolo Colangelo.

According to Nick's declaration of intent he was born Mar 8, 1879 in Italy and his last residence is listed as Paupisi. He listed his date of arrival as Jul 1, 1899 but there's no record to verify that. I did find a passenger record for a Nicolo Colangelo for May 15, 1899 on the ship Alsatia.

Nick often mentioned the names Tony, Charles and Joe, two fo those names were brothers and one was a nephew. We're cure Charles was a brothers name and Nick named a son Charles.

I'm working on researching a Charles Colangelo from New Jersey who was married to Marianna/Marian and had a son named Julian.

Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mike, It's so long since I've been on Rootsweb that I'm not sure how your message got to me (or even if it was meant for me!). My grandmother was Grazia Colangelo, born in Bisceglie, Italy; emigrated to Worcester, MA, then finally settled in Yonkers, NY. She had a sister, Lucia, who also was in Yonkers, a brother Angelo in Worcester, and a brother Pietro who moved to Fresno, CA. As far as I know, all other siblings remained in Italy. Those that came to the US came around 1920. Lorrie

Hello-Yes, my name is Catherine Colangelo and my parents called me Ca'trina. But my last name now is by marriage to George Frank Colangelo of Elmsford, NY. His family is rooted in Port Chester. However, hes does not remember a relative of this name. He has an older sister who is still there and is sending her the question.

Good luck. Would appreciate any info you get. I will send you anything I can come up with. Our oldest direct ancestor was an Angelo Colangelo who immigtated to NY in 1907. He is verified through Ellis Island records.

My father's name was Donato Colangelo, he was born on 1 May 1914. He met my mother in South Africa during the 2nd world war. He died a very sad and broken man for not being able to see his family since he was only 21 years of age. Over the years there was a lot of communication between our family in South Africa and the family in Paupisi. Photographs exchanged, letters and telephone conversations. Which has stopped since my fathers death in 1983. Unfortunately I could never find any of the letters with the names and addresses and telephone numbers of my family in Paupisi.
My grandmothers name was Maria Gracia Puzella. I also know that he had a brother with the name Romoli Salvatorre, and the name Aldo Etorre was also mentioned, not sure if it was a brother or a uncle.

Colangelo, Angelo, Bocchino

Am researching my husbands family line and have hit a wall with one of his grandmother's siblings. I have her name as Maria Antonette Bocchino b.28 Aug 1887 in Naples, Italy. Her father was Carmine Bocchino and her mother was Maria Michgal DeMinico.

We believe she married a man by the surname of Colangelo and they moved from Philadelphia to California (possibly Contra Costa County). Friction in the family led to someone (?) in the family changing the surname to Angelo.

Unfortunately that is all the information I have. If anyone sees any similarities to their family from the above information I would appreciate any help I can get!

Thanks,
Susan

It has been a long time since your posting so I hope you get this. My father was Gabriel Bruno born in 1921 in Bronx, NY. I have his baptismal certificate. His godmother was Ernielinda Colangelo who I believe may have been an aunt, his mother's sister. His mother was Giacinta (Marciano) Bruno I haven't been able to find anything on Ernielinda Colangelo and I can't find anything on Giacinta Marciano. Do you have any info on any of these people?

I'm looking for information about my great-great-grandmother, Catherine Colangelo. She was born in Italy in 1859. She married Andrea Esposito (aka Andrew Sposta), and emigrated to the U.S. sometime before 1892. She had at least five children, and was living in Port Chester, N.Y. for most of her adult life. If you think you might have a connection to this Catherine Colangelo, or any information about her at all, please contact me. Thanks!

Kristen in NJ
