Looking for the parents of Elizabeth Ann Colbert

I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out who Elizabeth Ann (Colbert) Stewart's parents were. This can be a bit confusing because Elizabeth Ann (Colbert) Stewart's daughter was named Elizabeth Ann Holder.

I've found this quoted from the National Archives - Southwest Region: "On 8 August 1894, J.S. Wolfe, 82 y.o slave of Jim Wolfe who lived his entire life with the Chickasaw, that Elizabeth Ann Stewart Holder was the granddaughter of Old John Colbert. He acted as the interpreter for Old John at the indian land sales in Ponotoc, Mississippi. He related that George Stewart , (Eliabeth Ann Colbert's Husband) who died after being snagged under the eye with a cane. He personanaly knew Ben, William, and Lewis, children of Elizabeth Holder."

She seems to have been born around 1774, but it's not at all clear who Old John was.

I'd be grateful for any of your thoughts.

Dennis
"old John" Colbert

I have found several instances where a reference is made to "old John" such as this quote "3. On 8 August 1894, J.S. "

or this one

" stated he knew George Stewart was a Chickasaw in Mississippi and that he married Old John Colbert's daughter and that George and Elizabeth Ann Colbert Stewart's daughter married a man named Holder."

But I can't actually figure out who "Old John Colbert" was. Is "Old John" a nickname for James Logan Colbert?

Confused!

I just found out from Family Tree DNA that I am a 4th cousin of the Colbert's of PittMy 4th GG Thomas Calvert/Colvard was a blacksmith and owned a tavern in the town of Halifax, NC between 1758 and 1768. Then he moved west to Bute (now Franklin and Warren) Co., NC. During the American Rev. my 4th GG Thomas moved back to Halifax where he made muskets for the
Continental Army under Col. Nicholas Long. He died in 1785.
My 3rd GG Thomas was in the first U.S. Census of Franklin Co., NC of 1790 under the name Thomas Colbert. The family has kept the Colbert name since then. Thomas died in 1846. It is unknown how many children Joseph Calvert or his son
Thomas Calvert/Colvard had.

My father is Frank Joseph Colbert, born November 24, 1924, in Homestead, PA. His father, Frank Sr., was born February 19, 1895, in Homestead, PA. His birth name was William Francis Colbert. He took "Joseph" as his confirmation name and later dropped the William, going by "Frank J. Colbert". He had two brothers named Howard Colbert and Harry Colbert. Both married and had children. Their father, Jesse Augustus Colbert, was from Johnstown area. My grandfather, Frank Sr., died July 31, 1945, while my father was overseas in WWII. He and my grandmother, Helen Theresa O'Brien Colbert Kastner, are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetary in Warren, PA. Grandma went by "Theresa" and was born in Whittaker, PA.
My grandfather had two brothers, Howard and Harry, both of whom married and had children. My dad recalls a cousin Charles, son of Howard Colbert, with whom he had quite a bikeride on the road between Tidioute and Torpedo after my grandparents moved to Garland, PA. Two of my aunts, my father's sisters, Rita Colbert Boyer and Peg Colbert Holcomb, used to work on the family history. My Aunt Rita died in April, 1991, and Aunt Peg passed away on July 9, 2009. The youngest of the family, Thomas Anthony Colbert, passed away on November 19, 2011. My father is still living, as are two of his siblings: younger sisters, Dolores Colbert Keister Kaufman, and Patricia Colbert Smith, both living in Westfield, NY. I would love to know if anyone of the "Colbert Clan" recognizes any of the names I put above.

If i had more names I'd be glad to look for you. The book says William Colbert was born in N. Carolina possibly to Obediah Colbert and moved to Georgia as a young man. I just got the book from my aunt so have not gotten very far in the reading.
Stephanie

I have not checked out the Rutherford group much really. The group is later than I have been researching, but wouldn't surprise me if somehow they connected. Our Colbert DNA hasn't matched with anyone else, but now known family members. What that means I don't know, but Haplotype is I2a, and there are some I's in the Calvert grouping. The PW groupung is English haplotype in the RBi grouping I have files on lots of Colbert's/Calvert's/various spelling, etc. Minkie turned up and so did the others in the Carolina's. There is also a Tamer (another female and not a James as some have changed that to). I believe she may have been John's wife. I will check further into the DNA and see how things are working out there. What exactly do you want to know?

There are Covington's in early Goochland, and John Calvert with the Huguenot's there early also. Again, what that means I don't know. His sons did go on to the Carolina's, William, Anthony, I think if memory serves. Others went on to TN and elsewhere. The Covington's married into the Colbert's early, and I forget where in the south I have the census for that. Later, they are in our Henry Colbert family connections, and Henry was in IL, and went on to ARK. The daughter married into the Rose family, and the family was large and entailed two wives so there are lots of connections there.

Re: searching for grandfathers kin

The Frohock's and Colbert's are related in So. IL through the Baker's there. However, the migration patterns could be similar. John and Thomas Frohock, and William came from Bucks Co. PA to Rowan Co, Carolina, but records are found in various counties. They were Tories aligned with the colonial government and the courts so names are on a lot of records. I would be really interested in what you found in GA, The descendants of Thomas and son Alexander wound their way through Tenn, KY, and on into IL where they settled. There was another Frohock family also in Maine same time, early 1700's, as the ancestor of the IL Frohock's, and both were named John. They trace back to England. If you find more to indicate other relationships with the families you mention I would be very interested.

My Colbert's are believed to derive from an Elisha of Elbert/Madison/Franklin Co., GA, though not totally proven. Elisha had inherited land there from a James, who I think was wed to a Susannah, and I believe he died about 1783, but land did not get passed on since James warranted bounty land but never had it granted. Finally, it was granted after several court sessions in 1798. Elisha started paying taxes in Franklin Co, GA then, 1798 and did so till 1802. Most of the Colbert's moved out of GA around that time, and Elisha may have gone on to KY/VA about that time. By 1807 he is noted as a "squatter" on land in Randolph Co. in what was to become Gallatin Co, IL. He later sold the land back in GA in 1806 to a William, possibly the one of 1772 or his son William. Our DNA is strongly related to a William Colbert of 1772 who was in Greene/Hancock, GA, and later went on to AL, MS, and sons went to LA. The early James and William are likely brothers. Still looking to prove James, Susannah, and Elisha to some extent, but all the evidence, censuses, deeds, etc., along with the vast research done on the William of 1772 family indicate my Colbert's relate. Making sense also is an earlier William as a possible father of both, so working on that as well. I do think they were in the Carolina's, but where I can't pin down, and they may have been earlier in VA for there are early Calbert's/Colbert's there. Nicholas Culbert/Colbert warranted land in the 1740's in Bute, so he is another possibility.

With your Colvard's, the Clary's might be helpful to look into. Somewhere there are answers for all of us -- we hope.

I have been following this line of thought, but my husband had surgery so have not had the time to respond.
Sandra, There is so much simularity...and then you mentioned Minkie. Odd name...so...is this a different line that mine...the one out of Rutherford, NC? Minkie was the wife of a William Colbert (who I believe was a brother to John Colbert) Both William and John were living next to each other in Rutherford, NC in 1850. Did you find her AFTER he died (1860) William died in Rutherford and appears on the Mortality Schedule. I don't know when/where John died, but suspect it was in Rutherford after 1850...that is the last census I found him. John was married to someone named Syntha. John was the person who signed the marriage bond for Alexander Colbert when he married Mary Sutton in Rutherford (1834). William (1780) and John (1785)both state they were born in NC. Minkie and Syntha in VA. Alexander said he was born in SC. Alex and his first wife had several of their children in SC before moving to Lumpkin County, GA just prior to the 1840 Census.
Alexander married twice. His first wife Mary Sutton states that she was born in Tn. His second wife, Mary Covington was born in NC. Alex's second wife bore him a son that he named Elisha.
Is this Minkie you are talking about found somewhere other than in Rutherford, NC. When she shows up with William Colbert in 1850 she is 84 years old...14 years older than her husband.

This is really interesting. Alexander had a son, John Alexander Calvert, b. Virginia 1809 and died in Jefferson Co, IL. My sample was Ernie Calvert in the FTDNA site. I have been trying to find another descendent of Alexander to find out whether the father of Cynthia's children was a Calvert. I think I will contact David Bell and ask him to look at the two. This is very exciting news.

Sandra,

I think that the Frohock and my Calvert/Colbert/Colvard family are somehow connect, but I'm not sure how.

Wherever I look, I find Frohocks's. They are not necessarily from the same family every time, but they could be brothers, cousins, etc.

For instance, there are Frohock's in western NC, in Bute (Franklin and Warren)NC, in Elbert Co., GA with other Colberts, and in Illinois.

It could be the Frohock's and Calverts (variant spellings) are just following the same migration paths, or it could be something else that neither of us are aware of.

I did find a couple of things of interest in Bute Co. In addition to finding the Frohocks, I also found the Stokley and Basford (Bashford) families living there.

John and wife Mary were living in Bute/Warren Co. before 1774.

May Court 1774:
Ordered that the hands of Adkin McLamore, Benjamin Kendall, Nathaniel Peebles, William Bagley, John Hawskins, Young McLamore, ...
JOHN STOKLEY...do lay off a road the best & Convenient Way ...and open & Clear the same & that Nathaniel Henderson be overseer of the same.

John Stokley and his wife lived in Warren Co as late as 1797
when my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard was a constable for Franklin Co. There was also a Jehu Stokley living in Warren Co., but I'm not sure what relationship the two Stokley's had with one another.

Benson Basford and his wife Penting also lived in Bute/Warren Co, NC around the same period of time.

I believe John Stokley Colvard had a brother named William Bashford Colvard in Elbert Co., GA.

If the Stokley and Basford families from Bute/Warren NC are related to John S. and William B. Colvard of Elbert Co, then the possibility exists that my 4th GG Thomas Colvard of Halifax and Franklin Co may be their father and my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard is their brother.
Richard
P.S. DNA shows that I am related to a Colvard family that lived in west NC during the 1700's and early 1800's. So I have DNA relatives using both the Colvard and Colbert name.

Well, perhaps. There is a John A. Colbert whose family was in Jefferson Co., IL, wed into the Innman's, and the DNA matches with the PW Calverts. thinking is that John A. descends from an Alexander or, at least, that is my understanding. Maybe I should compare DNA with you if you match Rose's and Neal/McNeil? My Colbert's haven't matched with anyone else so far, but I have Rose's in my maternal line and find the families overlap back when. Tangled webs!!

The Bible record indicating a marriage to a Lee seems to indicate a Calvert connection. Where Cynthia fits in totally isn't understood, but the Alexander fits with Calvert's according to DNA findings. There were a number of Calvert's in early KY. The Elijah Calvert I have noted lived in Gallatin/later Hardin Co. I have some land and census records but not on this computer. There were also PW Calverts in Jefferson Co., who called themselves Colbert. I think the upheaval of the Revolution and all the migration, just made it a necessity not to associate with the Tory side of the government back when.

I wonder where he was in 1820. Cynthia was living with a free white male under 16 and a free black female 14-45. The Elijah in Smith in 1830 was 40-50 years old, living with what looks like a free black family. He could not have been part of Cynthia's household in 1820 since he was too old to be the white male from 1820. She would have been about 60 at the time in 1820. Do you know about when your Elijah was born? I wonder if the census record in 1830 was wrong about his age.

The Elijah I am seeking lived in Smith County, TN during the 1830 census. This may have been the same man who was in the 1840 Allen Co, KY census.
Cynthia Calvert was in Smith County, TN in 1820. Her son Alexander was in Allen Co, KY at the same time. They are geographically very close.
It appears she died before 1830 and in 1827 her son Alexander purchased land in White Co, IL.
If Elijah was associated with this Calvert family it would make sense for him to have moved to IL. I have wondered if he was a son of Cynthia.

I ask because while an Elisha Colbert was in So IL early 1800's and thought the have died about 1834, we don't know where. There is also, however, an Elijah Calvert in the area about the same time. The Calvert family lineage does have an Elijah Calvert.

My 3rd GG Thomas Colbert had a daughter named Hicksey who married Henry Dorsey of Franklin Co., NC.
Before she married Henry, she had an illegitimate son named
Archibald Jackson Colbert, b. 6 Jan 1830.

Henry and Hicksey had two children but Hicksey died in 1844 and Henry married Lucy Woodward. In 1846 Henry Dorsey and his family including Archibald and the Timberlake, Drivers, Stallings, and Conduit families from Franklin Co. moved to Smith Co, TN and settled at Snow Creek near Carthage. Henry and Lucy also had several children.
You might look there.
Hello,
Back in the mid-1990's I wrote an article entitled "James Logan Colbert of the Chickasaws: The Man and the Myth." It appeared in the North Carolina Genealogical Society Journal in the May 1994 and Feb 1995 issues.

If you haven't found what you are looking for, you might want to look there. My research shows that James Colbert did not
arrive in America by ship. He was born in North Carolina to
Joseph Calvert of Plumtree Island on the Roanoke River. Joseph was an Indian trader as were other members of families that lived on island including Abraham Colson's brother Joseph. Abraham Colson was a registered Chickasaw trader.
Re: Fleming Colbert and Chickasaw Nation connection?

Fleming Tine was born according to a Bible fragment to William Colbert, b. 1772, and wife, "Peggy" Margaret Williams, b. 1777, who died about 1817. This was soon after the move of the family from Hancock/Greene Co., GA, to AL. William married again, twice. The second marriage produced Lucinda, but mother's name is not known. The third was to a Waters, who had children already, but the family was added to. Two of William's sons stayed in GA, some in AL, near now Montgomery when he moved again to Noxubee, MS, where he died about 1848. Descedants went on to LA, some to ARK, and later TX. My family from IL matches with the DNA of the family who moved on to LA and there is a Jackson in TX also in the mix. My research indicates there is a James who preceded both William of 1772 and Elisha b. Unknown but the early 1770's possibly. This James had 400 acres in early Elbert, GA, earlier Wilkes Co. Exactly how these two relate, and indeed whether Elisha is our earlier ancestor of the So IL branch is not certain, but the DNA indicates they relate -- big time. There is a Rev. Elisha Colbert who is said to have died in 1784 and who is a brother to Bazel, who took his bounty land grant. The Elisha is So IL came there between 1802 and 1806 or 07, and he is very much alive, settling in now Hardin Co., IL, then Randolph Co., and by 1817 perhaps moving back to Al where son Hiram lived. He is thought to have died in about 1834 as did son James in IL, both in the War of 1812 in IL and perhaps victims of an epidemic at the time. Along with this earlier James in Elbert, GA, is also a William to whom Elisha sold land in Frankin Co before moving on to IL, a Suzannah, who has land of her own but is also later listed as a widow there. There is also a Tuckedmarc in the area same time as when Elisha lived there, and a John Colbert(son), died 1789, w. Martha, with a large family, a Richard, as well as varied other Colbert's, Calvert's, Calvitt's, Colvert's, in early GA, Carolina's, and VA. Who fits where is yet to be proven. If anything fits and can add to this do let us know.

In early IL the So IL Colbert's lived near the Rose family, my Mother's family also, and these Rose's also came from Elbert, GA, when they came in the early 1800's, descendants of a Henry Rose.
Margaret Colbert, Addison, New York

I am looking for the family of Margaret Colbert who was the neice of Honora Downes (Dawnes) and Patrick McNamara of Ithaca, New York. Patrick and Honora were married in 1863 and Patrick died in 1865. Honora died in 1908 and Margaret Colbert seemed to be the only relative and was in charge of the arrangements of burial for Honora. In 1908 Margaret is listed as living in Addison New York.

If there are any descendants, please contact me for I have information on Patrick and Honora that I would like to give you.

The Cynthia you refer to is the same woman I am seeking. Ella Foy Gorman postulated that she was married to 3 different Calvert cousins but no record of any marriage appears to exist. Her son Alexander is my 4th great grandfather. I belong to the Calvert site and they are as curious about her as I am. I agree regarding the MtDNA although it wouldn't help this particular situation.
I believe the spelling inconsistency is due to the pronunciation. The Calvert family apparently pronounced the name "COLBERT" and so the spelling changed among several branches as time went by.
