Patricia Kay Hanks
Born in Salem, OR. on Oct. 28, 1943
Died on Jul. 4, 2009 and resided in McMinnville, OR.

Service: Saturday, Jul. 11, 2009
Cemetery: Belle Passe

She leaves her loving husband of 46 years and best buddy, Al Hanks, children David and Lisa and grandchildren Diego, Thibaud and Guillaume. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Chapel of Macy and Son.

Born in Salem, on October 28, 1943, Patricia was raised in Gervais by her parents Izorah "Kay" and Roscoe Colby, and was one of five sisters.

While attending Gervais High School, she was a cheerleader and championship softball pitcher. As a teen, she loved to wear pleated miniskirts and dance the night away. Music was a life-long passion, particularly jazz and rock and roll. Patricia always had a piano in the house and played beautifully.

"She was the prettiest girl I ever saw," Al remembers of their first meeting at the University of Oregon, where they were both undergraduates. A devoted, lifelong Ducks fan, she cheered on her football team during every game, dressed head to toe in yellow and green.

Patricia went on to earn a Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, in 1979, as well as a Master's in Museum Studies from California State University, Long Beach, in 1990. As an artist, she created oil, tole and watercolor paintings, as well as prints and jewelry.

Patricia enjoyed cross-country skiing, mountain biking, golfing, camping, hiking and flyfishing. She sought out new places to sightsee, walk, shop, ski, drink wine and eat cheese, and travelled extensively in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

She also enjoyed reading, cooking, gardening and indulging her sweet tooth; Godiva chocolates and Tillamook berry shakes were special favorites. She volunteered in many places, including the Master Gardener program, Air Force Family Services and various museums.

Patricia was a devoted, loyal, loving wife, mother and homemaker, though she didn't particularly like housework. She was fiercely protective of her children, and dearly loved her grandsons. The hole in our hearts will never be healed. She will be sorely missed.

Memorials may be given to Huningtons Corea c/o Macy and Son.

Aline Cecil (Colby) Tapscott Minnich (1915 ~ 2004) Obituary
Aline Cecil Tapscott Minnich
5/16/15 ~ 1/20/04

Aline was born in Hart, Michigan in 1915, one of a pair of twins, daughter of Leslie V. Colby, father, and Cecil G. (Hasty) Colby, mother. The family moved to Gervais, Oregon in the early 1920's.

In 1934 she was married to Bangs C. Tapscott. They moved to Riverside, California, where they had one son, Bangs L. Tapscott. They were divorced in 1948.

Aline later moved to Lancaster, California, where she met her second husband-to-be, Joseph Minnich. They were married in 1959, and moved to Susanville, California, where they bought a ranch and raised sheep. Joe died of a heart attack in 1979.

Eventually, Aline moved to Woodburn, Oregon, just a few miles from Gervais where she grew up. She lived there until 2001, when she moved to Salt Lake City to be near her son and daughter-in-law.

She died the evening of January 20, 2004, after a short hospital stay. She was 88 years old.

Aline had a remarkable memory for friends and acquaintances, and maintained correspondence with many she hadn't seen for years. She remembered birthdays and anniversaries of all of her friends and relatives, and always sent cards and gifts. She treasured many little gifts she had received over the years, and liked to tell who had given them to her and when. She had a soft heart for animals, and especially loved wild birds. In Woodburn, and again in Salt Lake City, she maintained bird feeders and bird houses, and enjoyed watching the sparrows and others raise their families. A year or so before moving to Utah, she was adopted by a young homeless cat, whom she named Lucky . He stayed her faithful companion for the rest of her life. Aline remained independent, living in her own apartment in a retirement community, right up until her final hospital stay.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, her twin sister Eileen Seely, her younger brother Roscoe Colby, her younger sister Flora Carmical, and her dear friend Pearl Vogt.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Bangs and Fran Tapscott, grandson Chris Tapscott and wife Julie, granddaughter Teresa Tapscott, great-granddaughter Ryley Tapscott, and her uncle Carroll Hasty in Michigan, plus many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Aline requested cremation, and that request has been observed. There will be no formal funeral ceremonies. A small private memorial gathering will take place at a later time. Those wishing to honor her memory may do so by making a donation to the Audubon Society, or other organization devoted to birds or animals.

HENRY HERRICK COLBY
(15 Apr 1845 - 22 Dec 1926)

Henry Herrick Colby, son of Jonathan and Lydia Colby, was born in 1845, about four miles northwest of the church.
Mary Ellen (Bone) Colby (1848 ~ 1915) Obituary
Mary Ellen Colby
(Mrs. Henry H. Colby)

MARY ELLEN BONE COLBY
(14 Mar 1848 - 30 May 1915), wife of Henry H. Colby and daughter of Robert S. and Nancy Bone, was born March 14, 1848, almost within the shadow of the church she so loved, and in the work of which she was so deeply interested, being a devoted, consecrated Superintendent of the Primary Department of the Sabbath School forty-five years. Many of the older people in the present congregation, and most of the younger ones, received their earliest Sabbath School instruction from her. She was progressive and made use of the best methods in teaching and holding the attention of her pupils.

No child ever had a more loving friend or a more earnest teacher; nothing seemed too much trouble for her to do for the enjoyment or benefit of the children, and to the last days of her life she was planning for her class.

Sympathetic by nature, her heart went out to any one in need of help, and many can testify that her hand obeyed the impulse of her heart in rendering prompt and substantial assistance. She was a great lover of flowers and her gifts of blossoms and plants brought cheer to many a sick room.

Four little orphans were taken into her home and cared for as tenderly as her own children. Two of these died in infancy; of the other two one is now a trained nurse, and one a young farmer.

She lived to serve; and in service to others she found her greatest happiness.

Doris E. (Colby) Miete (1917 ~ 2009) Obituary

WHITEFIELD, ME -- Doris E. (Colby) Miete, 91, passed away May 20, 2009, at Country Manor Nursing Home in Coopers Mills, with family by her side.

Born Nov. 17, 1917, she was the first of seven children born to Chester and Marieta (Kennedy) Colby. Doris attended the Coopers Mills grammar school and graduated from Cony High School. She then went to Gorham State Teachers College in Gorham.

Doris taught school in both of the one-room schoolhouses in Somerville. During World War II, she worked at Bath Iron Works, piloting training planes to teach new pilots how to fly. During the Korean War, she was a civil defense airplane spotter in Coopers Mills.

In 1946 she married Olavi (Ool) Miete. They had one son, Jon.

Doris went back to school at the University of Maine at Orono, then taught fourth grade at Sheldon Street Grammar School in Farmingdale until her retirement. She loved teaching and was very passionate about it. In her spare time, she took classes in oil painting, tole painting, pottery, stained glass and many other crafts. She had an insatiable hunger to learn new things. She would master one thing, then move on to something new. Her hunger to learn was as strong as her hunger to teach.

Doris was more than a grandmother to her granddaughter, Jessica. She helped tremendously in raising her.

Doris had a vegetable garden. Most years, her pride and joy was having peas before the Fourth of July. She loved to spend summers at the Colby camps on China and Sheepscot lakes. She would go to Pemiquid Trail and stay at Vi McCormic's camp with other teachers every summer for a couple of weeks at a time. In her spare time, she enjoyed a good game of golf with her sister, Joanne, and husband Richard. She enjoyed every season and had an activity that she enjoyed for each one. In the fall, she loved to go leaf peeping.

She was a member of St. Giles Episcopal Church in Jefferson and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She devoted more than 15 years and countless hours to delivering Meals on Wheels for Senior Spectrum, based in Hallowell. She always said it was so much more than just volunteering to drop off meals. "Sometimes I might be the only person they see, and it's that smile I get when I walk through their door that makes me feel so good," she said. She always put others ahead of herself, and it gave her great satisfaction to do just that.

Doris was predeceased by both her parents; brothers Rufus and Russ Colby; and a sister, Margaret Mooney.

She is survived by her son, Jon A. Miete, of Whitefield; the granddaughter she raised, Jessica J. and husband Dustin Ward of Whitefield; special great-grandchildren Matthew J. Miete and Shauna M. Wade, both of Whitefield, and Morgan J. Ross of Colebrook, N.H.; sisters Jaunita Foye, of Coopers Mills, Joanne Gross and husband Richard, of Farmingdale, and Jeanne Feyler and husband Clint, of Mount Vernon; her brother, Jerre Colby and wife Carolyn, of Windsor; along with several nieces, nephews and friends.

Because education and children were such a large and important part of who Doris was, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a college fund for her great-grandchildren in care of Jon Miete, 428 Mills Road, Whitefield, ME 04353.

A celebration of her life will be set forth at a later date.
Amanda Chaffee (the daughter) was born in Wales MA and died in Vernon Ct. in 1832.
I have no other info on Amanda colby other than the info that she was the mother of Amanda Chaffee and obviously lived or was from Mass. Porter Walbridge and Amanda Chaffee had the following children Eunice b. 1817, Moulton b. 1815, Wing b. 1819, Sandford b. 1821, King b 1823, Austin 1825, Adeline b 1826 and Porter Jr. b. 1827.

I need to work backwards from Amanda to connect her into my Chaffee Tree. Thank you so much for your help.
