2011 Coldiron Family Update

Coldiron Family Genealogy

December 2011 Update

Greetings once again to all family members. We have been doing these annual updates since 2002 and found it's a good way to convey a lot of information across many of our families and keep everybody up to date.

New Coldiron Family Genealogy book (Second Edition) – The new book was published in November 2009 and has been very well received by families who have purchased it. We appreciate your positive comments. The book integrates all the records in the 1998 first edition with the new material compiled in the last 10 years. The new book is 1226 pages, bound with a durable hard cover, 8.5x11 inches in size, and is fully indexed. It contains 4100 Family Group Records, 2443 Census Records of 1023 families, and 1550 Cemetery Records. Family notes and stories are integrated with the Family Group Records so the information on a family is all in one place. There are 14,600 Coldiron descendants in the book. It contains all we know about Coldiron families after 35+ years of research.

The books are still available for purchase. Cost is $59.00 per book including mailing. Just send a personal check or money order to me and I'll mail your book the next day. I can also drop ship them to anyone you choose. They make great Christmas, birthday and marriage gifts for that special family member.

Coldiron Mysteries Solved – The updated book on pages 1149–1151 discusses the top 20 mysteries we've been carrying for some time, unable to solve them. Good news! With the help of some of you, five of these have been solved and we can now add the mystery people to our database.

Mysteries #4 & #5 – Who is the Isaac Coldiron b. 1840 in VA, who was married to Mary and had children Anderson, Riley and Nervesta? After much study, we have concluded this Isaac is the same one shown on page 270 of the book, married to Nancy Ellen VanMeter (his second wife). He was first married to Mary Morris in VA and they had the children mentioned. After the Civil War, Isaac left his first family over a dispute and went to Missouri, where he married Nancy. Keys to the mystery were correcting his birth date to 19 Jun 1835, the recent stories submitted by current family members which elaborated on the dispute, and the children's records. Audrey Polenske of Nebraska was instrumental in resolving this, as were Donald Hall and Dan Miller. Thanks to all!

Mystery #8 – Who is the Lincoln L. Coldiron, born 9 May 1926 and died 4 Mar 1989 in Owasso MI? This is Lincoln Luther Coldiron, son of Luther Leroy Coldiron and Viva Madeline Travis. Lincoln was a son of Viva when she married Luther, and Luther adopted Lincoln who assumed his Coldiron name. Audrey Polenske solved this one.

Mystery #10 – Who was Ruby Ella Coldiron, born 22 Mar 1920 and died 1 Jul 1956; buried Prairie Grove Cemetery, Waynedale IN? James Schaller's girlfriend bought a Coldiron book as a Christmas gift for James in 2009. James learned of this mystery from reading the book and called me, saying "Ruby Ella Coldiron was my mother." James and his friend had planned a business trip to Florida in a couple of weeks and stopped to see us. He supplied documentation that identified his parents. We spent the afternoon talking family and connecting James to the rest of us. James' father was Earl Green Coldiron, who married Ruby Ella Mills. When Ruby died, they had four very young children who were put up for adoption. James was adopted by Richard and Jean Schaller, and had never met another Coldiron before me. James has a mechanical engineering degree from Purdue University, and is president of Hosetract, Inc. in Fort Wayne IN. He's going to try to attend our reunion in 2012 to meet more cousins. He is also trying to locate his two sisters who were adopted by other families.

Mystery #15 – Who is Ray J. Coldiron, born 10 Dec 1930 and died 30 May 2006; last residence Carey OH [Information from Soc Sec Death Index.] At the time the book was printed we did not have a Ray J. Coldiron in the database. But we did have a Jack Coldiron as a son of Larry Coldiron and Edna Hart, with identical birth and death dates. A little detective work on the internet convinced us beyond doubt that the Jack Coldiron we had was the same man as Ray Jackson Coldiron. His name was originally given to us as a nickname Jack, rather than his full formal name.

Family Reunions – There seems to be great interest in family reunions. That's probably because Coldiron is a relatively small family, and most cousins I've met have known few Coldirons outside their immediate family. Attending a reunion is a wonderful way to meet new cousins, catch up on all the family news, and share photos and family stories. Pages 1151 and 1152 of the updated Coldiron book summarize our Coldiron reunions held regularly. Check them out, and attend one in 2012 if you can. You'll have fun and meet cousins you didn't know you had. We were able to attend four reunions in 2011: (1) the annual reunion at our house in Masaryktown, FL on 5 March. We had 36 attendees from five states, including six first-timers. (2) the annual reunion on Father's Day (19 June) in London, KY. Heavy morning rain kept some away but those staying had a great time. Thanks, Rodney and Barbara. (3) our annual reunion at Lake Seneca, NY on 31 July, hosted by Hayward & Beverly Coldiron. Always fun in a spectacular setting! (4) Harlan KY reunion was held on 1 October, and was again well attended. Always exciting to come back to Harlan, since all of us have deep roots there. Thanks to Dave, Ginger and Mike for getting it together.

Note: In the following marriage, birth and death records, s/o = son of, d/o = daughter of, w/o = wife of, h/o = husband of, and (cd) indicates Coldiron descendant. In the deaths, name in parenthesis is maiden name, number in parenthesis is age at death.

Marriages [2] – Congratulations to the following couples recently wed. We wish all of you many years of happiness. Justin David Coldiron and Kelly Jo Ellis, 20 Aug 2011, Elmira, NY. Zachary Allen Wilkinson and Lisa Miller, 9 Oct 2011, Temecula, CA. Justin is s/o David Shaw Coldiron and Allison Kay Peterpaul, and Zachary is s/o Michael Allen Wilkinson and Suzan Carol Coldiron.

Births [7] – Welcome to the newest members of the family!
Coldiron Family Reunion

Hello to All,

Our 13th Coldiron Family Reunion will be held at our house on Saturday, 5 March 2011.

We had our best turnout last year with 54 attendees from seven states -- it was a great day.

I realize many of you live some distance away and won't be able to make it. But I wanted to let all my genealogy contacts know about it in case you can come, or want to plan on coming in the future. The reunion is always on the first Saturday in March.

Guests start arriving by mid-morning on Saturday, and we have a pot luck lunch about 1:00 p.m. We spend the afternoon and evening visiting, meeting new cousins, listening to family stories and viewing family photos. Most of this activity is outside under the oaks and pines, with a camp fire going nearby. For the past several years, the "Good 'Ole Boys" have brought their guitars, mandolins and drums to provide some heel kickin' music. Great fun. I will also have lots of photo albums to review, and copies of the new Coldiron Family Genealogy book will be available.

If you need directions to our house, or recommendations for a nearby motel, please let us know.

Please RSVP by 26 February if you can attend, and let us know how many in your family will be coming. You and all of your family will be most welcome.

Otto and Pat Coldiron
1125 Arlanie Road
Masaryktown, FL 34604

Hello Priscilla,

Almost all Eastern Counties of Kentucky are important to Coldiron research; In particular, all counties east of I-75. HARLAN CO. is at the top of the list. Coldirons came to this area in about 1808 and have been there for over 200 years. Almost all Coldiron families have early roots in Harlan County, KY. CLAY CO. just north of Harlan Co. is also very important for you; your g-g-grandmother Sylvania Coldiron was born there. Many of your early relatives are buried in the Coldiron Cemetery at Brown Mission Church in Clay Co. Other counties with a very strong Coldiron presence are Letcher, Magoffin, Menifee, Johnson, Perry, Wolfe, Laurel, Jackson, Breathitt, Morgan, Rowan, Boyd, Greenup. I have visited each of these counties—and more—while researching Coldiron. Each researcher has their own routine, but mine was usually visiting the library to see what genealogy references were available, then the courthouse to look up records and deeds, then to the cemeteries to locate people of interest. Whenever possible, try to find the location where the early Coldirons in that community lived. Talk to as many old timers as you can; they know the history of the people and community.

There isn't enough room on this forum page to cover much more. Please contact me directly if you have questions. E-mail: ottoc@earthlink.net

Dear Otto,

I have your first book but have not purchased the second one as yet. For the past 3 years, my cousin and 2 young anuts and I have taken a trip together. We are traveling the first of May this year and have decided to visit some of the areas in eastern TN & Ky where the various branches of our family pioneered. Are there any places of particular interest that you would recommend we include in our visit. Thank you so much, Priscilla Boynton

2009 Coldiron Family Update

Coldiron Family Genealogy

December 2009 Update

Greetings once again to all family members. We have been doing these annual updates since 2002 and found it's a good way to convey a lot of information across many of our families. In addition to mailing it out at the end of the year, I also include it in correspondence during the next year to those inquiring about the family.

New Coldiron Family Genealogy book – I know, I've been telling most of you for the past few years that I hoped to finish the book "in the next year." Well, by golly, we did – finally! The first edition of our book was published in 1998, and we've compiled much more information on many new families since then. This second edition manuscript was mailed to the publisher on 2 Sep 2009 and printed books received on 6 November 09. It integrates all the records in the first edition with all the new material compiled in the last 10 years. The new book is 1,226 pages, bound with a durable hard cover, 8.5x11 inches in size. It contains 4100 Family Group Records, 2443 Census Records of 1023 families, and 1550 Cemetery Records. Family notes and stories are integrated with the Family Group Records so the information on a family is in one place. There are 14,600 Coldiron descendants in the book. It contains all we know about Coldiron families after 35+ years of research. Copies have already been mailed to many families.

If you would like additional information on the book, please contact me.

Family Reunions – We know of six reunions held this year. (1) We had our 11th reunion on 7 March at Otto & Pat Coldiron's house in Masaryktown, FL. Forty-nine people attended from six states – FL, NY, PA, TX, VA and WA. Reunion No. 12 in 2010 will be on 6 March. (2) Coldiron reunion in London, KY is always held on Father's Day. Contact Rodney Bledsoe for details 606-864-5641. (3) Coldiron reunion in Rockdale, TX on 19 July 2009. We attended this one and it was great to meet all the Texas cousins. Contact Connie Seelke 979-229-7400 for future dates. (4) The Coldiron–Brewer–Williamson reunion has been held in West Virginia since 1956, with average attendance about 300. It was held in 2009 on 5 July in White Sulphur Springs. Contact Deborah Hinton 336-596-8201. (5) A Coldiron reunion has been held in the Northern KY/Southern OH area since about 1935. It is usually the first weekend of August. Contact Marian Baker 937-626-4408. (6) First reunion held in Harlan, KY in 2009 at Camp Blanton. Contact Becky Burgess, P. O. Box 1114, Loyal, KY, 40854 for the 2010 reunion plans.

Marriages [5] – Congratulations to the following couples recently wed. We wish all of you many years of happiness. Steven Richard Wilson and Andrea Kay Arnold m. 23 Jul 07 in Athens, PA. Steve is s/o Donald Wilson and Brenda Duggan. Kayla Shiveley and Robbie Gifford m. 10 Feb 08. In the deaths, name in parenthesis is maiden name.

Births [7] – Welcome to the newest members of the family! Leslie Fish Roark 69, 9 Nov 09, Dayton OH, s/o Robert Tobe Roark and Lucy Baylor Ball.

You will note from the above records that we're able to compile more records on deaths than births and marriages. That's only because death records are much more easily obtained. Almost all birth and marriage records are reported to me by a family member; there is no convenient way to access them by other means. Death records are very accessible. I use two main sources: (1) the Social Security Death Index and (2) Legacy.com. If a person has received a Social Security benefit (including monthly social security checks), the Social Security Administration reports their death in the SSDI, including the death date, usually the birth date, their SSN, and the place where they received their last benefit. Legacy.com is a website that publishes obituaries. At least once a month I search these two databases for the keyword Coldiron. If I find a new obituary, I check it carefully for family information, and then print it and keep it in my obituary file. Currently there are 679 Coldiron names in SSDI and 405 obituaries on Legacy.com.

Libraries Containing the First Edition of Coldiron Family Genealogy – If you don't have a copy of the first edition of the Coldiron book published in 1998, you may see a copy located in the following libraries:

Sutro Library Branch, San Francisco, CA - *
Library of Congress, Washington, DC - *
Largo Public Library, Largo, FL
Allen Co. The other facilities indicate strong residence communities for Coldiron families. I plan to also place copies of the second edition of the book in these libraries and historical societies, and possible others as well. Copies have already been sent to the Library of Congress as part of the copywriting process.

I hope this past year 2009 has been good for you and all of your family. If you can, please make a point to attend a family reunion in 2010 – maybe even start one in your area. It's a great way to become acquainted with those family members we seldom see, and to build family relationships. Have a very blessed New Year.

Otto G.
Hi Christine,

First, to answer why I could not be contacted by the earlier posts several years ago, my e-mail address shown was incorrect. Some forget to put the c after otto. The correct e-mail address is thus: ottoc@earthlink.net

Second, we have much, much information about thousands of Coldiron families. In fact, I just published a new Coldiron book (1,226 pages) that contains all we know about these families after 35+ years of researching. If you want more information on the book and how to buy it, please contact me.

We have 36 Robert Coldirons in our database. One is probably your father but I don't know which one without more information.

I would be delighted to share information with you and answer any questions I can about your family and ancestry.

Otto G. Coldiron
ottoc@earthlink.net

Re: Coldiron shooting Harlan co.1927 newspaper clipping

I can fill you in on the derivation of the Coldiron surname.

Johan Georg Kalteisen emmigrated to America from Germany in 1750. In about 1766 he anglicized his name (German to English) to George Coldiron. Coldiron is a direct conversion of Kalteisen in German – i.e., Kalt in German translates to Cold in English; Eisen in German translates to Iron in English. Thus, Kalteisen became Coldiron.

In almost 40 years of research of the Coldiron family, we have not found a Coldiron who does not descend from Johan Georg Kalteisen (George Coldiron). Thus, the Coldirons are one family – we are all related.

If you would like to know more about the family, and quite possibly your own family's ancestry back to JGK, you may contact me directly.

Otto G.
Re: Ann Coldiron - Harlan Co, KY

I have an Ann Coldiron who married an Aaron Pennington in my database. I have her as a daughter of Conrad Coldiron b. abt 1760 Berks Co., PA, and Rachel Hendricks, b. abt. 1763 in Rowan Co.,NC. Conrad and Rachel started their family in Rowan Co., NC in 1783. The family moved to Ashe Co, NC in 1791 and stayed there until ?. They were on their way to Kentucky and probably stopped in Lee Co., VA because one of their children, the last one, was born in Virginia in 1803. They reached Knox(now Harlan) Co., KY in 1803, where Rachel died.

I found Aaron, age 73, and Ann Pennington, age 60 on the 1860 US Census, Harlan Kentucky, so she was b. abt 1800. Stated she was born in Virginia.

I saw Ann included in this family group in trees posted to Ancestry.com. I don't know how accurate their source information was. But it makes sense. Some of the children listed as Aaron's were born when Ann would have been too young to be their mother, so perhaps Ann was his second wife...? Hope this helps a litle.

There was a James H Coldiron b. 1828 in Harlan, KY and d. 1884 in Johnson, KY. His parents: Jesse Coldiron (b. 1803 Virginia) and Lavina Blanton (b. 1805 Harlan, KY, d. 1885 Harlan, KY) Sorry, but I don't know anything about his wife. But maybe the Kentucky info will give you a lead to follow up on. (So now you can look in Kentucky, too!)

I have fully researched the other James Henry Coldiron (b. 1815 in Kentucky) that m. in Missouri and died in Texas. He only had one wife - Phama Miller Onstott, so they're not the ones you seek. Good Luck! Ellen

Coldiron Family Reunion

The ninth annual Coldiron Family Reunion will be held at our house in Masaryktown, FL (near Brooksville, about 45 miles north of Tampa) on Saturday, 3 March 2007. All family members are invited.

The reunion will start about 10:00 a.m. and last until late afternoon. We will share a picnic pot-luck lunch about 1:00 p.m. We have a good time swaping stories, looking at family photos, figuring out how we are related and generally just enjoying ourselves. I will update you on the family genealogy research.

If you can attend, please contact me for additional details at my e-mail address.

Otto G. and Pat Coldiron
ottoc@earthlink.net

Hi Chris,

I was recently contacted by another Chissenhall research, and I sent the following response. It may be of some benefit to you.

(Start of response)

"I had not seen this census until you pointed it out to me. I just looked at it tonight. However, I did note that Mr. Chisenhall's first name is spelled Dulaney in this census record (1850 Lee Co., VA).

"So you are suggesting that this Dulaney Chisenhall and his wife Mary are possible parents of the Martha Delaney (Dulaney?) Chisenhall who married James H. Coldiron. That's interesting and logical. Martha's middle name is a good clue, and she is the right age (born in 1823) to be their daughter. She was also born in NC, as was Dulaney and Mary. Here's another interesting clue. In the 1850 census, James H. Coldiron's family (with Martha of course) are also living in Lee Co., VA and are only 12 houses away from Dulaney and Mary Chisenhall. Dulaney and Mary are in 443/460 and James and Martha are in 431/448. Taken together, all these clues form pretty strong support to suggest that Dulaney and Mary Chisenhall could indeed be the parents of Martha Delaney/Dulaney "Patsy" Chisenhall.

"I don't find any other Chisenhalls in the 1850 Lee Co., VA census. I'm afraid I can offer no clues as to the parentage of your James Chisenhall. Perhaps he had moved out of the Lee Co. area by 1850.

(End of response)

Have a great 2007 and a good year researching.

Otto G.
Chissenhall / Coldiron genealogy

I am looking for any information on my family member, "PATSY" MARTHA DELANEY CHISSENHALL, who married JAMES H. COLDIRON. Her date range was 1823 to 1900. I have conflicting information from the Census records: one indicates she was born in North Carolina, another indicates she was born in Virginia. Our family oral history is that she was either part or full Cherokee Indian. Any information would be GREATLY appreciated! Thank you in advance!

Looking for my best friend from elementary school. I know it sounds crazy, but I have never forgotten her. I moved from Middletown, Ohio when I was 9 years old with my family and never seen her again. We went to post town elementary together, in Middletown, Ohio. I moved to Florida in 1978 or 1979. She had black hair and small framed. I belive her birthday was July 17th, the year should be between 1968-1970. If anyone has any information on her it would be greatly appreciated.
