Dear Dianna
Although I don`t presently know of any Jacob in my direct family line, I believe I can give you some insight as to likely general origins.
My Great Grandfather, Daniel Cole arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia (The Canadian eqivalent to Ellis Island) in 1838.
They were from the County of Cork in Ireland where, Cole is not an uncommon name.
They, like countless others were fleeing the ravages of the Irish famine. Nova Scotia being an entry point for all new immigrants to Canada was also a transient place at this time in history. As your family chose to move onwards to Maine, mine chose to pass through Quebec and settle the farm community of Strabane Ontario, near the Niagara escarpment (The cliffs of the Niagara penisula)
Whether we are distant cousins in name or blood, I wish you success as you reconstuct the journey.
Hope this brings something new to your search.
Sincerely
Lance Darren Cole
