The register of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown, NJ, showes that on March 9, 1755, Jon cole was "baptized and renewed covenant" and Mary Cole "renewed covenant." Their four children, John (11), Joseph (9), Phebe (5), and Hannah (1) were baptized. The register further shows that 6 more children were born to John and Mary Cole and were baptized, as follows: David 1756, Daniel 1758, Sarah 1760, Masey 1762, Mary 1764, and Lydia 1766.The family moved to Frederick Co., VA where John Cole's will was produced to the Court in Winchester on April 21, 1808, naming wife, Mary, and sons: John, Joseph, and Daniel and daughters Phebe, Hannah, Sarah, Masy, and Maray. Mary Cole's will was produced to the Court in Winchester on Feb 5, 1816. Her will states in part "I bequeath to my daughter, Sarah Mann, the tract of land I now live on as the land was willed to me by my husband, John Cole..." following: My soul I do with all humility recommend to almighty God trusting that through the merits of my redeemer I shall obtain pardon & remission of my sins & enjoy everlasting felicity and my body I commit to the earth therein to be decently interred at the discretion of my executor herein after named and the worldly estate with which it hath pleased God to bless me, I dispose of in the following
*Item: I give & bequeath to my son Richard Cole half the still & half utensils thereto belonging to him & his heirs.
*Item: I give to my son John Cole the lot of land I now live on, one bed & furniture, one mare, one square bottle, also half the still with half the utensils thereto belonging, and also fifteen gallons of brandy, to him & his heirs. My son John is to pay the doctor only his part.
*Item: I give to my daughters Judith & Susannah Cole one bed & furniture, also two cows to them & their heirs.
*Item: I give to my daughters Ann and Sarah Ann Cole bed & furniture, also two heifers and to my daughters the whole duly (duty?) man to them & their heirs.
*Item: I give my daughter Alice Morgan one iron pot now at her home to her by me.
*Item: I give to my granddaughter M____Cole one cow called Cherry, one small dish, one small basin to her & her heirs.
*Item: My will & desire is that the remainder of my estate be equally divided between my sons Richard & John Cole and my daughters Martha Reynolds, Judith Cole, Susannah Cole, Ann Cole & Sarah Ann Cole to them & their heirs.
*Item: I nominate and appoint Thomas Slaughter to be my Executor to this my Will.

This Last Will and Testament of Susanna Cole, dec'd, was exhibited to the court by Thomas Slaughter, gentleman, the Executor therein named and was proved by the oaths of John Johnson & Henry Barnes, two of the witnesses thereto & ordered to be recorded, at the same time the said Executor refused to take the burthen of the execution thereof, and on the motion of John Cole, Certificate is granted him for obtaining Letters of Administration of the said decedent's estate with the Will annexed, he having taken the oath & entered into bond with security as the law directs.

ï¿¼ I found that the Cole family Coat of Arms is Gold with a Black Bull passant, the crest is a bull's head, and the family motto is ""Occido Hostilis Regem Cole
Deum Cole, Regem Serva" which means "Death to the Enemys of the Family Cole Worship God, Protect the King"
Will of John Cole Sr. (Generation 19)
was witnessed by William Green, John Green, Charles E. M. Morgan, William W. Morgan.
Wife of John Cole Sr., Susanna, did not live many years after her husband died. Her will was filed for probate 30 Nov. 1761.
"Jesse and Frank James, The Family History" was written by Philip W. Steele. He documents the information and interviewed Lawerence H. Barr, Jesse James's grandson and James R. Ross, Jesse James's gr grandson. And several others.
Zerelda Cole was the daughter of James Cole and Sally Lindsay who was a first cousin. Her parents were Anthony Lindsay and Alsey Cole. They had two children. Zerelda E. Cole born 29 Jan. 1825 and Jesse Richard Cole born 29 Nov 1826. Both children were born in Woodford Co KY.
James Cole died 27 Feb 1827 after falling from his horse.
James Cole's parents were Richard Cole Jr and Sally Yates
Richard Cole's parents were Richard Cole Sr. and Ann Hubbard. Richard Cole owned a tavern in Woodford Co Ky. Zerelda took her two small children and went to live there with the family.
Richard Cole Sr was the son of John Cole and Susana who were natives of Chester Co PA. They both died in Culpepper Co VA. He died in 1757 and she died in 1761 John Cole names his son Richard Sr. and son John in his will. Susana included the daughters names in her will in 1761.
Sally Lindsay and James Cole are buried in a cemetery in Woodford Co Kentucky. There is an inscription on the headstone which states that they were the grandparents of Jesse and Frank James.

Here is a copy of his Will. from ALOB, Vol. VII, #1, p. 86-6:
"p. 11. 11 March 1830.. I, Joseph Cole, being of sound mind & perfect memory. I wish as much of my affects sold as to pay my just debts. I give unto my wife Susannah Cole possession of the farm whereon I now live, containing 200 acres during her widowhood or until my youngest[sic] son come of the age of twenty one yrs. with the stock of grain at my death. I give unto my oldest son James Cole 200 acres of land joining the land whereon I now live, above the creek. I give unto my youngest son Lewis Cole the farm whereon I now live, to take possession when of age, or rented out for his use, provided my wife should marry or leave the place. I give unto George Cole, son of James Cole (and nephew) one horse, saddle & bridle, worth $50. provided he stays with the family until of age, or if not nothing.. I give unto Nancy Cole dtr. of James Cole (and neice) one cow & calf and wheel, one bed provided she stays with the family until she is 18 yrs., if not nothing.. I give the residue of my land, 250 acres on the head of Turkey Creek, 50 acres of Newfound on the South side of the creek and joining Brooks land, and 100 acres called the Underwood place, with all my personal property to be sold and equally divided among my wife & children and Daniel Frisby to share equally with the heirs. The balance of the land to be rented out for the use of the family. I appoint my friend John Thrash executor..
