Surnames: Cole Doughty
It appears we may be searching for the same family. In the book "Early Geneologies of the Cole Families in America" there is a section dealing with the Cole families living in York County, Maine.
According to the author, Frank T. Cole, William Cole came from England to the Colonies around the mid 1630's. He married Elizabeth Doughty, the daughter of a Bristol, England merchant, Francis Doughty. The couple had sons, all born in England named Nicholas, b. 1626, William Jr., b. 1627 and John, b. about 1630. John, according to Frank Cole had six sons: Isaac; John Jr.; Phillip (my 6th great grandfather);Edward; Joseph; Benjamin. (I can find no independent evidence substantiating the existence of Isaac, Edward, John Jr., or Benjamin as being sons of John.)
The locales mentioned as places of residence of John and his sons are: Wells and Cape Porpoise/Cleaves Cove (now Kennebunk).
It would be great to hear from you if you have additional info or if anything I have written above does not seem correct.
The William Cole of this family is often confused with another William Cole who had a childless marriage with America's most famous "witch", Eunice "Goody" Cole of Hampton, NH.
