Mahala COLE + David CARSON of Oswego New York 1856-1865

Classification: Query
Surnames: CARSON, COLE, FITCH, SEVERN, SEVERANCE, SEVERANS
I am hoping to find out why the parents of Curtis Severn [Severans] CARSON born Oct 1856/7 in Oswego NY gave him his middle name.

His parents were David CARSON born abt 1830 Scotland who married in Oswego NY to Mahala COLE d/o Horatio + Hannah COLE of Oswego.

They had 3 children -
Curtis Severn CARSON marr Sarah E FITCH 1884
Robert CARSON ?
John CARSON marr Jennie E WEST 1909

I did find a Curtis SEVERN / SEVERANS / SEVERANCE living in Oswego at the same time, born 1806 in Vermont, but I can't figure out if they were related in some way or simply good friends.

I finally found the surname for Mahala when I did a more intensive search at familysearch.org and found the marriage for John CARSON in 1909 in Oswego and he was nice enough to give his mother's maiden name.

As Mahala was only 15 or so when she married, here's one of the only Census' she appears in with her family --

1850 - Oswego Township, Oswego, NY

Horatio Cole M 53 Connecticut
Hannah Cole F 43 Massachusetts
Abram Cole M 14 New York
Mahala Cole F 10 New York
Olive Cole F 8 New York

Any help identifying *why* David and Mahala gave their 1st son this unusual name would be much appreciated!
