Surnames: COLE, HADLEY
I have been researching our branch of the Cole Family for many years and always made the assumption they emigrated from the British Isles but I have just come across something today that makes me think they may have come to New England from Germany.
My website address is:

Our family left the U.S. just in time for enumeration in the 1901 Census of Canada.
The two oldest sons of George L. Cole (Ezra F. Cole & Merton W. Cole) declared on this census that their "racial or tribal origin" was German. They were each heads of their own households by this time and were in their mid thirties.
The earliest ancestor I can trace is Phillip Cole (and wife Mary Hadley) of Amesbury, Massachusetts who raised their family in the late 1690's. Nothing prior to this time period is known of Phillip or his ancestors.
