William T. Cole-Meriwether & Coweta counties, GA

Researching the family of William T. Cole (b. 15 Nov. 1827) who married first Mary Ann Owen in 1847 in Meriwether County, daughter of Coleman P. and Charlotte Allen Owen. Mary Ann died abt. 1863 (per her father's will) and William remarried Lennah J. Hackney shortly after (cannot find marriage record). Lennah was b. 10 March 1836 and d. 23 March 1919 (will on file in Coweta County). Lennah was the daughter of Richard M. Hackney and Milly Ann Griggs. Richard was among the very early settlers of Coweta County (Anderson's History) and his marriage to Milly was said to have been the first marriage in Newnan.

Both William and Lennah Hackney Cole are buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in downtown Newnan.

William's children with Mary Ann Owen were James, Caroline, William L., Charles D., Jesse and Joseph B. Cole (from 1850 Meriwether and 1860 Coweta census records), all born between 1849 and 1860. These children all inherited from their grandfather Coleman P. Owen when he died in 1872, but they were not named individually in the estate distribution. I would love to know what happened to these children but can't seem to find them. There is nothing in the probate records of Meriwether or Coweta on these children. They are referred to only as "the children of Mary Ann Cole, deceased."

William T. Cole began as a carriage maker in 1860 but apparently attended dental school and became a successful dentist, as did his children and some of his grandchildren.

William went into business for a while with Robert D. Cole, of the now famous R.D. Cole Manufacturing in Newnan, along with Matthew Cole. William T. later pulled out and left R.D., Matthew, and Matthew's sons to run the business. R.D. Cole, whose only son, Thomas died before 1900, left his entire estate to Matthew's sons. It is known that Matthew was a brother of R.D. Cole. I don't know the relationship of William T. and R.D., if there is one.

William T. Cole died in 1911, leaving his widow, Lennah Cole, and grown children Thomas Cole (m. Cora Goldsmith), Pauline Virginia Cole (never married) and Maude Cole (m. Albert Smith). Another son, Clifford (married but wife's name unknown), preceded him in death. Clifford was living in Hopkinsville, KY, when he died but his body was returned to Newnan for burial.

Oddly, there are no probate records for William T. Cole in the Coweta County Courthouse. I have been through all the Cole probate records from 1843 (Richard Cole) through 1920 (M.F. Cole) and there is nothing at all on William. Lennah Cole left a will in 1919 bequeathing her property to her children Thomas, Pauline and Maude, and her grandson, Wilson Smith. She owned a home on the north side of Jackson Street in Newnan "bounded on the east by Atlanta and West Point RR and on the west by the property of T.G. (or Y.) Farmer ..."

There is another, younger W.T. Cole who married Sarah Pittard (Sarah is buried at Holly Springs in Moreland) who was from Gwinnett County. He does not appear to be related to my William T. Cole.

Trying to find William's parents, information on his children with Mary Ann, and his relationship to the Coles of the manufacturing company in Newnan.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Judy Kilgore
Newnan, GA

I am trying to make contact with direct male descendants of Daniel Mansfield Cole. One of his sons, Byron Cole, is buried immediately adjacent to my third great grandfather, Ezra Cole in Marion Cemetery, Waushara County, Wisconsin. Ezra died in 1862 and Byron in 1907. What is their relationship?

Josie Ella Cole

I am searching for my husband's great grandmother, Josie Ella Cole. We have very little information on her. She was born in TN, we think Wayne County. She married William James Buchanan Moore in Wayne County, TN in 1883. Her children are listed as Hollis Moore, Cole Moore, Jolean Moore (b. 8/30/1885 Waynesboro, TN), Lena Moore (b.1/28/1884 Waynesboro, TN. m. Millard Fillmore Foster), George Washington Moore (b. 3/28/1886 and Josie Ella Moore (b. 10/8/1888, m. Albert Lee Morris). Josie Ella Moore was my husband's grandmother. It is believed that Josie Ella Cole Moore died about two weeks after her daughter, Josie Ella Moore was born. I found in the Wayne County 1860 census a Josephine Cole, dau. of Samuel and Delina. Josephine was listed as 4 years old but not knowing the birth year of Josie Ella, I cannot determine if this is the right one. My husband's grandmother often spoke of being born on the Cherokee reservation in TN but we are not sure if the Cherokee is correct or not. As you can see, we need HELP!! If anyone has any info, please let us hear from you. Thank you.

By the time of the 1840 census, Caleb Cole had died or gone away and Jane Cole was head of household in Henry Co. They had at least dau. Columbia Luranah Cole, also known as Columbia Ann, who married David Grim in 1860 in Henry Co. This Caleb H. Cole was son of Hynson Cole and Eliza nee Hurley, of Monongalia Co. WV. Would like to know if anyone knows who Jane's parents were; could have been other Monongalians and/or residents of Henry Co. Quite a few migrants to Henry Co. were from Monongalia Co., settling especially in Prairie Twp.

Attempting to find where in USA John & Sarah Cole came from (NY or ?)and names of their parents. Sarah may have been Williams, but not sure. They were loyalists that were transported to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada in 1783. John settled in Westfield, New Brunswick. John died in 1824 and Sarah died in 1855. I have had no luck trying to locate their roots in US prior to arrival in New Brunswick.

My email Pcole@nbpower.com

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Peter Cole

Looking for info on Abraham Cole and wife Malinda Williams

I may be the gggg-granddaughter of this couple. I just need to verify if their daughter Ataliah Cole is my ggg-grandmother. This Atahliah Cole married a George Bell in 1841 in Hancock Co., Ohio. The name of Athey Cole was written down (found in a book). I do have a ggg-grandfather George Bell and his wife was Athalia/ Athaliah (surname unknown). They would have married before 1842, in Ohio as that is when their son Enos was born. My ggg-grandmother was born May 22, 1820 in Ohio. Does anyone know if my Athaliah is Abraham Cole and Malinda Williams daughter? I can't find anything that lists their daughters birth date. Any help is appreciated.

I'm looking to see if Athey Cole had family in Hancock Co., Ohio. Also if there is any birth info for her. I believe this is my ggg-grandmother. She married George Bell in Hancock Co., Ohio August 28, 1841 (LDS site has it as June 28, 1841). On census' it, if it is definitley her, has Athey as Athalia/Athaliah/Atha. My ggg-grandmother was born, according to headstone, May 22, 1820 (in Ohio) and died Nov 13, 1905 (in Madison Co., Iowa). Any help is appreciated.

COLE in Albion, Calhoun, Michigan

I am searching for information about my great-great-grandmother Elizabeth COLE, born in 1862 in Albion.

The only real clue I have so far is that she is supposedly related to Archibald COLE who enlisted as a Private on 29 March 1864 in Albion, MI at the age of 42 in Company D, 2nd Infantry Regiment Michigan and died of wounds received in Petersburg, VA on 01 July 1864 in Washington, DC. According to my great-grandmother, long dead, he is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. I have a record of an Archibald COLE who married a Mary Ann Townsend on 26 March 1854 but I am not sure it is the same person. It is possible that Archibald Cole is Elizabeth Cole's father. I am sending for Archibald Cole's pension record and perhaps that will clear up things for me.

However, I would appreciate any and all information on this family. Thanks.

...Barb

Can anyone help me identify this Cole? I believe his name is Harold or Harry, but I'm not sure. If you do know him, could you provide information on him. He would have been in the Ravenna, Portage County area or Akron, Ohio in 1900. Many thanks!!

Debra

SOLOMON COLE --MD,PA,IN,IA

SOLOMON b, 11 Aug 1784 in MD, Father Robert (perhaps) moved with siblings(unknown) to Lancaster Co. PA. Moved to IN in 1817. He is considered to be one of the Pioneer settlers in Dearborn County, IN, having arrived before 1818 and setteled in the Logan Township area one mile south of the town on an initial 160 acres . He purchased this spread with a relative James and together bought another in Franklin Co, just to the north NE QTR of S. 24, TWP 12, N Range, 12 East. Later he sold 50 acres to another relative William and the three families began to work together on the land. He was the first teacher, headmaster of the local school when it was built. The family passed through two economic downturns. He eventually took calomel in anticipation of a cholera outbreak but the dosage was excessive and his brain was permanently damaged. The family left Indiana for Mt. Pleasant Iowa in 1841 where they settled on a farm near Mt. Pleasant. The youngest brothers in 1865 manufactured wooden water pumps and lightning rods. SOLOMON COLE died and was burried in the family plot in Forrest Hill Cemetery, in Mt. Pleasant. QUESTION WHO WAS HIS FATHER? WHEN DID HE DIE ETC? e-mail: johnmcole@earthlink.net

Squire Rufus Cole

I am researching ancestry of Squire Rufus Cole, a pioneer of Sackville, Westmorland, New Brunswick, Canada born 1796, son of Ebenezer and Martha Grace Cole. His father moved to Cole's Point, Dorchester Cape about 1802. Rufus married Lavina Cutler, she was daughter of Ebenezer Cutler, a land surveyor and graduate of Harvard University, and was also a prisoner of war in France for seven years.I am looking for the names of their eleven children, as I believe one of their daughters married one of my ancesters. Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Coles of PA, Culpeper VA

I'm seaching for a Sarah Cole who married my ancestor, Isaac Chapman, who settled in that part of Orange County VA
that became Culpeper in 1749. Isaac died in 1747, and I know nothing of what became of his widow; his children Isaac, John, Richard and Jemimah, migrated south to the New River VA and Alabama.

The Last Will and Testament of Susannah Cole, wife of John Cole, executed in Culpeper county in September 1761, bequeaths to a Sarah Ann Cole, with no mention of her married name. “Item: I give to my daughters Ann and Sarah Ann Cole bed & furniture, also two heiffers and to my daughters the whole duly (duty?) man to them & their heirs.” "Item: I give to my daughters Judith & Susannah Cole one bed & furniture, also two cows to them & their heirs." "Item: My will & desire is that the remainder of my estate be equally divided between my sons Richard & John Cole and my daughters Martha Reynolds, Judith Cole, Susannah Cole, Ann Cole & Sarah Ann Cole to them & their heirs."

Who were these Coles?

From a Rootsweb listing, John Cole, born in Pennsylvania in about 1680, was a farmer, and is said to have operated a still in Culpeper Virginia before dying in 1757. He and his wife Susanna had the following children:

John Cole born about 1700
Mary Ann Cole born about 1702
Judith Cole born about 1704
Alice Cole bon about 1706
Susanna Cole born about 1708
Sarah Ann Cole born about 1710
Martha Cole born about 1712
Richard Cole born 1729 in Pennsylvania

Back to Isaac Chapman: he was said (by his grandson Henley) to have come to VA from England by way of New England.

Might this have been the same Sarah Cole who married Isaac?

Might he have crossed paths with these Coles as he passed through Pennsylvania, married Sarah and whisked her away to Virginia (accompanied by her sister Susanna)? Might father John and mother Susanna have come to Culpeper to retire with their daughters?

I understand that much of this is detailed in Cole Family History, Warfield & Gaebl, 1959. Does anyone know of this book?

Rees Chapman

They show up in the 1860 Johnson Co., Ky census which is where they lived until their death. On the marriage record is has Louis Collins, the name Collins is then marked out and the name Cole written in. I have no other information on her parents or siblings. She is my gggrandmother and I would love to find out more about her. I have tried to connect her to the other Cole families in Eastern Ky but have no facts to link her. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I have been looking for sometime for info on my grandfather Lonnie Albert Cole. Possibly his name was changed from Luciotto or Cowles to Cole. He was suppose tobe raised after his parents died in a train wreck by a Helen Cowles. I think she was suppose to be kin but not sure. It shows inthe 1910 census that she had him a Louis Luciatto(Luciotto) who was 9 at the time with her. His parents are suppose to be a Sam Luciotto and Laura (last name unknown before she married). My uncle Philip we have a little info on him but not about his parents or his family. if anyone could help us it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

There was a Clarence and Austin Cole that were living in Whiteside Illinois with their mother and stepfather.
Mother's name was either Parnelia or Amelia Cole prior to marriage with Paul Newton. Paul Newton was from MASS.
They were married in 1857 in Whiteside Illinois and had one daughter: Eunice about 1867.

Clarence and Austin are often listed as "Newton", but I have on record they were born with the Father "Cole"

Any information on their mother and father would be wonderful. Tracking them both down stops at Whiteside.

I'm looking for any information on a John G. Cole who was born in Caroline County, VA Nov. 7, 1819. His middle initial most likely stands for either Gatewood or Garnett.

I believe that as of 1851 he was living in Lauderdale County, TN where his 19yo wife Martha T. Cole died May 17, 1851 leaving him with an infant daughter, name unknown. Martha Cole's maiden name may have been Borum (her mother's surname at the time of her death)

I also believe that he fought in the Confederate Army while living in Tennessee, possibly with Company B (later G), 5th Tennessee Infantry, CSA...which could place him in Henry County at some point.

We have no solid data on him except for a letter written by one of his nieces, and 1850 Census listing for John & Martha in Lauderdale County, and his date of birth.

John's parents were John Gatewood Cole (1792-1864) and Nancy Robinson Broaddus (1794-1862) of Caroline County, VA.

Any info on life, death, burial, etc. appreciated.

Does anyone have information that might tell me the connection between Abijah and his son Curtis, and Lemuel H.?

We know Samuel and Lemuel share a common "Y" DNA, and we know Curtis, son of Abijah, married in Eaton Co., MI where Lemuel lived from at least 1830 to 1861.
I am trying to trace my Cole ancestry in the US and I have hit a road block in establishing the parentage of my ggg grandfather whose name was Benjamin Cole. He was born in the US (in Virginia) but family members indicate that he had ties back to Manchester England. When I was very small there was reported to have been an incident involving some property/estate in Manchester that required my gggrandfather Humphrey cole to sign some legal papers. Does anyone have knowledge of the Cole family in Manchester or an understanding of the English legal system such that they could give me pointers as to how to research this legal event?
