Godwin/Godward/Godfrey could have been his middle name or Leslie could have been his middle name. I would still get his death certificate, or SS application or other records to make completely sure. Also, I guess he could have also CHANGED his name later, either legally or not legally...

Really? That's great! You can see him in the 1920 and 1930 US Census then. One time he's Godwin and one time he's Godfrey. :)

Glad to help! I love these little mysteries! :)

Unknown Cole was listed in the NC Birth Index. They might not have named him yet (in the old days they sometimes waited) OR he could have been stillborn. Why couldn't Unknown = Jackie? What was Jackie's birth date? It should be in his obit.

I don't know if the Veromi info is current. It compiles public records over several years. Note: It does not include designations like cousins or aunts -- I'm assuming those since they were living together in the same house at some time.

You could try calling information and try to find Jonas Wayne Cole, Jr. in Plymouth. Maybe he's still there...? Maybe he'd be willing to share info re: the family genealogy....?

Wow! i guess you're right! It is the exact birthdate! So weird that Leslie, Sr is Godward more than likely. I guess Leslie was his middle name and he dropped the Godward? i think I got you confused for a minute though. Jackie, is my father, Les Cole, Jr's deceased bro. So maybe unknown Cole was a baby that was stillborn.

Is the info about Frances, Les, and Jonas, jr. living together current?

I cant thank you enough for your help!!

Yes, Jimmy is a nickname for James.

In Jackie's obit, does it have siblings? or parents?

By piecing together info from the NC Birth Index and the US Census info, I have this:

Descendants of Lucy Jane Williams

1 Lucy Jane Williams	b: Abt. 1903
.. +James Edward Cole	b: Abt. 1892
........	2 Godward Cole	b: 21 October 1919
........	2 Nathan Cole	b: 06 November 1921
........	2 Rettie May Cole	b: Abt. 1924
........	2 James R. Cole	b: Abt. 1926
........	2 Bertha L. Cole	b: Abt. 1928
........	2 Unknown Cole	b: 28 May 1931
........	2 Jonas Wayne Cole	b: 04 June 1940
............ +Dianna Asby
...................	3 Jonas Wayne Cole	b: 1969

The Unknown Cole could have been Jackie. What's his birth date in his obit?

Also, Jonas Wayne Cole, Jr. is shown as living with Frances G. Cole and Leslie Cole, Jr. (i.e. his aunt and cousin.) at veromi.net If they are cousins, their fathers, Jonas Wayne Cole, Sr. and Leslie Cole, Sr. are brothers whose parents are James Edward Cole and Lucy Jane Williams.

Leslie Cole, Sr., Nathan Cole, James R. Cole were all buried at:
Hillside Memorial Gardens Inc.
213 Roanoke Ave
Plymouth, NC 27962
Telephone Number (252)793-2513

Also, their funeral arrangements were all handled by:
Horner-Walker Funeral Home
216 Washington Street
Plymouth, NC 27962
Phone Number: (252) 793-2132

Call or write the cemetery and funeral home and ask for copies of the death certificates for the Coles. Make sure you tell them that you are looking for your grandfather. They are usually very helpful towards family members.

I do not know if my father is alive. i am assuming so, since i havent seen an obit yet. His mom (Les, Sr's wife) is Frances Gibbs Cole. I was able to trace her family back to England. There is one Brother of my father named Jimmy. Do not know if that is a nickname or if it is James. I cannot find him in this site either. There was another bro named Jackie that I have an obit for. My father had 2 more kids Catherine and Micheal, but I find nothing but birth records for them. I do not know if Les, Sr had siblings. Again, i do not know this side of my family, so I am going by what my mom can remember. I did talk to Frances 5 yrs ago, but have had no further contact.

you could be right about Godward, but from what I have found on google, Duplin County is full of Coles, so i still think it could be a fam member.

I'm assuming your father has passed away...? Do you have his obituary? It might give clues to other family members.

Did you father have any siblings? Are they still living? If they could remember an aunt or uncle's name (if any) you might be able to track down family members.

I still think that Leslie may be "Godward" (actually listed as Godwin in 1920 Census and Godfrey in the 1930 Census) since they have the same birth date.

What was Leslie Sr's wife's name? If their marriage record is located, it may show their parents' names....

I am looking for information on Daniel T Cole who lived in Bollinger County Mo with wife, Delphinia Smith. They had at least eight children. One of which was my husband's great grandmother Naomi Jane, sometimes spelled Neoma. She is listed on one census spelled wrongly as Leona. Any help would be be very much appreciated. He was born abt 1830.

Can't find his parents. The one possiblity I have found would link him to three wives, two of which he would have been married to at the same time in two different states. Can someone help me to sort this out.

Family rumor has him related to or being friends with, possibly riding with Jesse James.

Please help!!!!

Sandra F

So as far as I know Leslie Cole sr doesnt have one either. Or maybe a cousin?

I will try to order the social info...I had the number but didnt know what to do with it!
Did he have a brother or half brother Jonus (or Jonas) Wayne Cole? Jonus' parents were Edward Cole and Lucy Jane Williams, according to the NC Birth Index.

(I found a Jonus Wayne Cole listed as a possible family member/roomate with a Leslie Cole in Plymouth at veromi.net.)

There's a Godward Cole listed in the North Carolina Birth Index, born Oct 21, 1919 in Onslow County, NC. His parents were James C. Cole and Lucy Williams. Could this be Leslie? Perhaps Leslie was his middle name?

James C might actually be James Edward. There's a Nathan Cole born 1921 with parents James Edward Cole and Lucy Williams in the NC Birth Index.

Any of these sound familiar?

My grand father Francis Cole on some senus lists Frank Cole or Coles on others. Married Annie Collins 1903 Saint Pancras Middlesex on the marriage certificate he stated father Micheal Cole - Carmen. I have traced Michael Cole born around 1832-34 born in Cambridgeshire (if this is the correct father). This Michael Cole married twice 1st Wife Mary Ann Wybrow, 2nd Wife Elizabeth Nicolas. Michaels father was John Cole, Michael died around 1900. What I cannot trace is Francis correct birth dates and reference of the birth registed. Marriage certificate states his age 30 so this would be 1871. On - 1901 census birth 1878. On -1911 census 1873, baptism was done with Michael Cole and Elizabeth not his mother Mary Ann this states birth date 1867. I have applied for five birth certificates and information comes back no match. I cannot trace his death records, although I think his wife lied about their address when he died so he could be placed somewhere else. Annie Collins (COLE HIS WIFE) is located at Finchley London. My father the youngest of 15 children was born 1920 my fathers name Leonard Samuel Cole, so Frank went through the war. I understand he was in the Black Watch I cannot get information on this because I do not have birth details. I think Frank died late 1930's his name is not on my fathers marriage certificate my father married 1942.In 1901 Francis was living with his older brother Charles if this is the correct reference it states he was born in Shoreditch, Francis older sister Elizabeth was born in this area. Francis states his name as Frank Cole on marriage certificate born St.Pancras. At the time of getting married he was living with Annie Collins at little George Street. At one time they lived at Drummond Street, Somers Town, Euston London. This is the house my father took me to as a child. I did meet my grand mother she died some time in the 1960's I have no idea what my grand father looks like, only information I have is that he wore his kilt all the time. The colours of the Black Watch. The Cole family all lived in the area of Euston - Camden and Islington, a large family. My grand mother sold flowers outside Euston Station, this may have been called St.Pancras station. Annie also sold flowers in Camden High Street and she had a stall outside a hospital. I understand other members of the family sold fruit and veg, this continued for some years. There was a butchers shop in Queens Cresecent Market Kentish Town called Coles the sign for this shop is still there and this can be seen on the internet when I do a trace, the shop today sells 2nd hand office furnitue, the sign stating Coles is very clear to read. This shop is not owned by the Cole family now. Annie and Franks oldest daughter also called Annie married into the Woodal family, this daughter took over the role of selling the flowers. I have information this also continued with Annie Woodals daughter, I think this daughter was called Sheila - Sheila married into the Barrott family. As you can read I have done research on the family. I cannot find Francis/Frank correct birth references, the death certificate and information on army references. If anyone out there can help me or you are a member of this family through marriage, please contact me. Thank you to anyone reading this long email, and of course thank you for your time.
Just as a note, I ran across two separate families in Rhode Island and Maine one being emigrated to the area from England in the 1700's and the other were my line they were direct relation to James of Ebon's book, that moved back to the Ma. area. They are two separate lines but some did marry into my line, but it was not direct so I did not list, I think it was Polly, but can recall exactly.

Just as a note, look at the Ship records and you will find it.

Tammy

I am descended from the same line twice

My 4th generation grandparents were
Consider Cole
and
Abigail Vaughn

Consider was the Grandson to John Cole and Patience Barber and Abigail Vaughn was the Great granddaughter of John Cole and Patience Barber. Making them 1st cousins once removed according to the auto cousin calculator.

I do have an issue with the book....
Why dose Ebon only list
James Cole 1718 son of John and Patience
And wife
Mercy Tilson 1716
Only having one child in the book? They had another. Waitstill Cole born 1746
The book only listed Hezekia born in 1743 why would he not list the other children?
Waitstill is mentioned in the book, but no reference to her parents only her and her husband whom is Samuel Vaughn parents to Abigail.

I descend from both Abigail and Consider the tree for my 4th generation grandfather is almost straight with the exception of the Vaughns or as Ebon would say Vaughts, Ransom, and Tilson families, which of course have all their histories in Plymouth.

Anyway, please update and add and please reply. When will you have your book done? Just asking.

I am a member of the NEHGS I can help look up all New England records as far back as they exist for you if you need help.

By the Way Considers family moved to Maine for a short wile and then came back to Ma. some of the kids stayed in Maine though but most of my line came back to Ma.

Riley's wife ( Riley is the son of Henry, son of Consider and Abigail) was descended from the famous Putnam family in Salem Ma. She also had almost a straight tree at her 1 Gr grandmother marring her cousin, that woman was the famous Sarah Ann Putnam from the Salem witch trials.

My family line threw these two are very interesting!

Tammy
the.posts.mt@gamil.com

Anyone can Email me with questions or additional information, please on any Surnames that I have in my tree.
say Barbara, I didn't think of this before but if your giles is somewhere in my family past unaware to me it might help. The "M' in my Cole family usually stand for Manson--&--Marion. My ggf was Manson Marion, My gf was Rufus Manson, My uncle was Ronald Marion and my brother was Robert Manson. So these names must be back somewhere further. You might try it and see
Best Wishes, Carol

Re: Julius J. Cole, Benton County, TN

Julius Jackson Cole Sr was the son of Loyd Cole. A big group of Coles moved from Wake County NC to the Humphreys County TN area about 1826. Loyd was the son of John Cole of Hillsborough, Wake County who was the son of Mark Cole who was a miller in Fayetteville. His father was Stephen Cole of Chester, PA.

Julius Jackson also had a son Julius Jackson Cole Jr.

(I am a descendant of Julius Sr. through his son Calvin Cole.)

john cole son of mark cole cumberland county nc

Thought I would pass along that I found a Cumberland County NC deed, dated 12 Sept 1804 (Cumberland County Deed Book 20, p. 355a) in which John Cole refers to "my father and mother Mark and Anna Cole." The original deed can be seen as a PDF on this website: http://www.ccrod.org/.

This is key information for anyone researching that particular line because as far as I know, Mark Cole left no will identifying his children. Mark Cole can be traced back to Stephen Cole of Chester, PA, and beyond that, to England.

I am pretty sure that Anna Cole was born Anna McKay, the daughter of a local Scottish planter.

At least two (Loyd and Thomas), and possibly four, of John's children went west to Humphrey's/Benton county TN about 1826.

Of Wake County and State of North Carolina being in sound and perfect mind and memory blessed be God do this sixth day of August in the year of our Lord one Thousand Eight Hundred and three.
The 1763 tax list for Anson County NC shows a William and a John as well as a Mark and Stephen. I believe that the Stephen is Mark's brother Stephen, and it is quite possible the other two are his brothers as well. It's hard to say because the names are so common, but it wasn't unusual for whole sets of family members to move together like that.
