Hi Franz!

Yes, of course I remembered you when I saw you on this thread. I really wish we could prove Levi's parentage. I also see your tree on Ancestry--I'm going to poke around there. I really need to get back to my Coles!

--Pam

Hello Pam -- We corresponded some years ago about the Coles of Oxford County. There is no documented proof to show the origins of Levi Cole. Best evidence points to his being the son of Gershom Cole, Sr. and wife Abigail Vaughan (thus a grandson of Joseph Cole and Ruth Sampson). There is dispute as to whether he was born in 1780 or 1788. I believe the later, 1788, date is more likely correct and that the 1780 date is the result of someone's long ago typo. EB Cole has his data all mixed up, confusing Levi with his uncle, Lemuel Cole. I have a lot of information about Levi's life as an adult in Greenwood, ME. His origins are obscure, however certain assumptions can be inferred based on his social ties.

I see a number of family trees on Ancestry that name Joseph Cole and Ruth Sampson as Levi's parents. If Levi was born in 1780, Ruth Sampson Cole is not his mother--she died in 1776 in Plympton, MA.

The Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth lists Levi as a son of Joseph and Ruth. However, I believe E.B. Cole's list is incorrect. In Vital Records of Plympton, Levi is not one of the children listed for Joseph and Ruth.

--Pam Thompson,
Updating and revising The Descendants of James Cole of Plymouth
Hi,
I found a Dr Joseph Cole arriving in Cayuga from where it doesn't say in 1806. I have hit a serious brick wall with my ancestor George w Cole. He was born in Mentz in 1812 but so far I have not been able to find any info other than a military track which the local historians haven't been able to identify for me except its lot 58. It says GW Cole on the map. Hes in 1840, 1850 in Mentz, then moves to Michigan for the 1860 census. ANY help is sincerely appreciated!!!

I have a letter from Sands L Cole b. 1837 NY, d. 1917 Evart MI. In the letter he states that his fathers youngest brother was Darius Cole. Sands' parents were Joseph C. Cole b. 1792 in Greenfield, NY, d. 1878 in Bay City, MI and Sarah Macomber. This would mean this Joseph C Cole had a brother Darius. This Joseph C's parents were Joseph (Sr) and Hannah Collins.
Does anyone have the full list of children of Joseph Cole and Hannah Collins?
The list I have now is Lydia, Susan, and Joseph C.

COLE family in Virigina/Kentucky/Illinois

I seem to be having trouble finding accurate information on my line of the Cole family.

I am showing:

William F Asher married Mary Cole (she seems to be born in Kentucy, died in Morgan County IL)

daughter of George Cole married to Rhoda Powell (both died in Morgan county IL)

son of Joseph Cole & Elizabeth Petty (both died in Mercer Kentucy)

son of John Cole & Ann Livingston (VA) (she is wife one, John then seems to have married again with more children from marriage 2)
son of John Cole b circa 1719 & Ann Livingston (Luneburg Virginia)

this is where things to haywire - everything seems to point to his parents being Joseph Cole born circa 1693 married to Sarah (a lot of pointing to a Sarah Cooper). I keep seeing TWO birthplaces, one Virginia, one Massachusetts. All links put parents as James Cole & Hannah Childs - born (and died???) in Massachusetts.

Does anyone have 'proof' of this tie or is everyone copying everyone else in trying to tie to Plymouth lines erroneously. Did any of the Mass. Coles migrate as far south as VA in the early colonial era? The logic doesn't make sense to me. I would love to keep the Cole/Childs tie but if it is wrong I'm willing to dump it for good.

Much thanks in advance for any help!

Milisa (John Asher, son of William Asher & Mary Cole was my gggrandfather)
Seeking information on Alice Rachael COLE, b. Aug 1879, Floyd County, Iowa. Daughter of Frederick COLE and Harriett SHOOK. The last record I can find of her is in the 1895 Iowa census where she is listed as living with her parents in Mason City, Cerro Gordo County. She may have moved to Colorado as her parents appear in the 1910 US census in Orchard Mesa, Mesa County, Colorado. She is likely to have married around 1900. Thanks.

His exact death date is not known. The last mention of him in any known record was in 1678 in a deed of land to him from Thomas Doty. But as late as March 1680, his son James was referred to as James Cole, Jr., which suggests that the father was still alive then. In 1684, the younger James was no longer referred to as Jr. James Cole, the emigrant head of the Plymouth Cole family, probably died between 1678 and 1684.

Hi - I have After Oct 1688 in Plymouth, MA when he sold his land to his son. I don't know if there is a correct date anywhere. Contact the New England Historical and Genealogical Society because they did some genealogical research on him and his family. I also have a tree on ancestry.com - Mary Avery Collins. It also probably has a wrong date. The Cole family name existed in my line until 1959 when my Grandpa Cole died. He was the last named Cole in this line. I can be contact directly at marymac@comporium.net. Mary

Hi Cindy! I am the great granddaughter of Robert Lawrence. My grandmother ( Robert L's daughter, Lois) always told us that George Washington Evans was not Robert's real father. She never knew who his real father was but that it had been kept a secret. If you have any information on his father please contact me! We would love to know. My grandmother is still living and I would love to tell her this information. You say the true blood line is Cole- who was this Cole family? It would be great if you could get back to me!
Thanks
Lauren

My John Cole, father of Peregrine, was Catholic and a member of the "underground" Bohemia Catholic Church in Delaware, so he may well have come from Maryland to escape religious persecution. Unfortunately, other than my 4G-grandfather Peregrine (who named his children Lambert, Archibald, Peter, etc) most of my Coles and yours used the same John, George, James, etc. names over and over. On the other hand, I have found Perry Coles born in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Mississippi.

Hello, I am looking for information that might connect your Job with my George W? There was a Job Cole also in the area in NY where my George was. I have no solid evidence that connects them though. Looking for George Ws parents and have not had any luck yet. I have a photo of George with three of his sons that belonged to my Great Grandfather Harry Cole. Would you have anything that might connect them???
