Hi
I have traced a branch of Coleman's who moved from Devon to Colchester in the 19th Century. Name becomes Colman. A boot maker. They move to Kensal Rise in London 1901 and then vanish. If anyone knows what happened to them do let me know. Thanks!
Re: COLEMAN

Dear Anna and also Iain and anyone else reading.

I have just discovered your message on ancestry. I am related to the Coleman tree but the furthest back I have found is Stephen Coleman born in Uplowman (near Cullompton) in 1795. He was a boot maker and married into the Sully family at Dulverton in the mid 19th Century.. Any information about his ancestors would be lovely to receive.

Ideally I would like to push my tree back further into the 18th Century but I need some vital links...
I know there were many other Coleman's in Cullompton during the 19th Century and I feel these are likely linked one generation up from Stephen, perhaps from the 1740's.
Likewise I know there was an Ann Coleman born also in the tiny village of Uplowman around 1800 so she surely must be related, perhaps his sister.

Going back searching other records I have found the 1723 Oath Roll in which local men had to go to Exeter to sign loyalty to King George (assuming after the arrival of William of Orange in which local people prepared the way for him to travel to London).
On this list there are several Coleman's listed in the area being at the following places all close to Cullompton: Uplowman, Burlescombe, Huntsham, Hockworthy.

With this information it is perhaps likely that there were clusters of the Coleman family in this region of Somerset going back to perhaps the Monmouth Rebellion and also the English Civil War. It might also be possible to assume that the Coleman's at Donyatt are also perhaps linked as well.

I would be interested to know more information about Colemans at Donyatt. I have also come across the name Coleman at Donyatt in connection with pottery there.

Kindest regards
Heather
Hello Greg
I am the original poster of the Coleman thread in this message board many years back.
Within my own branches of the Coleman tree I have only found a connection with Coleman and Hoare in the 20th Century in Torbay, Devon. Although the names Coleman and Hoare are very common in East Devon/West Somerset in the 18th and throughout the 19th Centuries.
There is another branch in the late 19th Century that went to live in Colchester and then on to London (a boot maker) but after that they vanish and I do not know where they went.
I am very interested in any one else who has researched the Coleman name in the Tiverton/Cullompton/Taunton/Donyatt area as this might be very helpful in linking my folk back to the 18th Century in this region. I lost the link in about 1790.
Kindest regards
Heather

My great grandmother was Julia Agnes Coleman, born Feb 23, 1873. I don't know much info on her or her family. I know she married William Foster and they lived in Jordan Station, ON. She died on Jan 16, 1914 while giving birth to her daughter Vivian. She had 6 children, one of whom wa my grandmother. I would love to find more info on where she was from, who her parents were etc. The only thing I remember my grandmother saying was that generations back they had come over on the Mayflower, but I can't find any info on her. I am at a loss. If you can help, that would be greatly appreciated, thanks. You can email me directly as well, colend@rogers.com

I believe that Alice Coleman was born about 1876 to Richard b.c. 1844 and Sarah b. c. 1844 Coleman most likely in Butler Co. Ala. Also in that family was:
Victoria b. c. 1867
William H. b. c. 1868
James b. c. 1870
George b. c. 1871
Jane b. c. 1878
Iota b. c. 1879
Henry b.Dec 1882
In the 1900 Census Alice Thomas is shown as a widow living in Whistler Ala. with three daughters:
Maria age 11
Carrie age 7
Mary L.age 5
Also living with Alice is her brother Henry Coleman

Charles Frederick Coleman B 1899 married Laura _______ born 1900 probably in Indiana. Charles was born in Gas City, Indiana and lived in Bluffton, Indiana with his parent's Henderson "Hank" and Rose (Oliver) Coleman.
Sometime in the mid 1920's, they moved to Central California and in 1930 lived at Ontario, San Bernardino County, California. After that, I lose them. They had 4 known children: Esther b.1918; Rosie b. 1921, Charles 1926; Laura b 1928. I'd enjoy exchanging information on this family. Charles and Laura are said to have divorced after the 1930 census.
Thanks!
Mike in Indiana

I spoke with you many years ago regarding my grandmother
Bertha Vaden Coleman Hamack, daughter of Sallie Chichester Coleman. I have done more research since that time and would be glad to share what I know. I am still interested in learning more about the family and visiting places where the family lived in Virginia and Maryland. I will be in that area in October. I can be contacted at lamberg@tscnet.com.

Sallie Coleman possibly of Richmond VA area

I bought a photo endorsed "To Mr & Mrs Joseph Cox with my love & best wishes. Sallie Coleman" at an antique store in Midway, KY. The photo is of a woman and was taken by a photographer named Clark in Richmond VA. It was probably taken in the 1910-1930's. I would like to reunite it with one of Sallie Coleman's descendants.

Johnson A. Coleman's father was William Coleman. When the descendants sold the family land on the waters of Sandy River near Danville in Jan. 1837, James J. Coleman was listed as an "infant child of Johnson A. Coleman, deceased." I believe that Johnson A. Coleman (married Martha G. Douglas 6 Nov 1827) was born in 1797. He father bought land here in Pittsylvania County in 1782.
Danny Ricketts
dan@rdricketts.com

Looking for any family of Marion Jerome Coleman (1876-1926 and Verna Shearer (1886-?)(daughter of Monroe or Roe Shearer). My father's sister was married to William Roe "Bill" Coleman (1914-1983, Marion and Verna's son, I have ended up with a lot of old pictures of the Coleman and Shearer family, from 1916+/- to the 60s, including a lot of Bill (William Roe) while he was in the Navy. They had at least one other son I think named Marion Robert Coleman b 1924. Both boys were born in Cotton Co. Oklahoma I beleive. I did not know Bill that well, met him a dozen times during our summer vacations. If there is any of his family that wants copies of the pictures, or even the originals, I would be glad to help in any way I can. I KNOW it would mean a lot finding something like this to me.

After Peter Coleman arrival in New Zealand in 1858, what was his occupation (did he remain a Cabinet Maker) and where did he live in Auckland. Peters seems to have had a brother called James, who along with their mother (Mary Coleman) are mentioned in 1851 UK Census (Manchester). James also appears in 1861 and 1871 census in Manchester as a Chair Maker with every growing family.
Yours John Rogers

Hi John,
I do not know much about Peter's early life. Yes he did live in Elliott st, not sure if this was his workshop, but beleive this was a shop area of the time.1887 electoral Roll, both James and Peter were still at Elliott st, listed as cabinet makers, I think he was still there in 1888,this was the year of his third wife's death. Son James, cabinet maker was the informant.
1893 electoral roll, lists Peter, cabinet maker living in Devonport, and son james, cabinet maker in Melrose,Devonport
Laurence, Peter's youngest son is also listed as cabinet maker, and living at Devonport. From the family history story goes that the son's were the local undertakers/coffin makers.
Peter died Dec 3 1907 in Devonport, and is buried in O'Neils cemetery in Takapuna, Auckland.
Do you have a name for Peter's brother James wife from the 1861,1871 census manchester? if I had some names maybe I could go sideways in the family? Any info would be welcomed.
you can contact me on oldiesoe@gmail.com
Thanks Margaret
