The Great Migration Begins (TGMB) by Robert Anderson ©1995 New England Historic Genealogical Society and The MacDonough-Hackstaff Ancestry by Rodney MacDonough, published 1901, do not have a record of a daughter named Elizabeth for Robert Cole(s). Additionally, the TGMB book says that the wife of Nathaniel Cole was not Martha WRIGHT, but rather Martha JACKSON based on the 21-volume series Vital Records of Rhode Island, 1636-1850 by James N. Arnold, published in Providence, 1891-1912, Vol. 1:Warwick:34, but this information appears in Austin's The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island.
Nancy COLE in 1850 Lincoln Co., TN age 54

I'm confused, and I'm hoping somebody can point me in the direction of resources/documentation that can straighten this out.

In 1850 Lincoln Co., TN, there is a Nancy COLES age 54 with children Joseph, John, Emaline, Anderson and Nancy in the household. Karen Walker has included a will by John COLE on her WorldConnect tree as follows:

Fayetteville, Lincoln County, Tennessee Will Records Book 1A, page 235
John Cole Last Will & Testament
I John Cole being in a low state of health but being in sound mind do make this my last will and testament.
1st I bequeath my soul to God who gave it
2nd I wish and desire that my debts be paid as soon a possible after my death out of any mony that may first come into my Administrators hands.
3rd I leave to my son William the colt that he now claims as his. Fourth I give to my son Joseph the colt that he claims.
5th I give to my daughter Emaline one heifer which she claims as hers.
6th I give to my daughter Nancy one heifer which she also calls hers.
7th I give to my beloved wife Nancy the entire use and control of my plantation to enable her to maintain herself and children during her natural life. I also give to her all my corn, bacon, --, horses, cattle and sheep, hogs and working tools, household and kitchen furniture. My intention is that she have the use & benefit of all my property except what has been heretofore mentioned provided for my request is that after the death of my wife my Administrators then shall proceed to sell all my real estate and the appurtenances thereon on such terms as the law directions and also such other property of mine as may be in her hands at her death. And the shall as soon as possible divide the proceeds equaly among any lawful heirs.
In Testamant whereof I do to this will set my hand and seal this 3 day of June 1844.

Test. John Coal SEAL
Josiah Norwood
Pinkny Pilant

So it's pretty clear the 1850 census is the household of John COLE'S survivors/heirs. My question comes in for the 1860 census for Lincoln Co., TN for Nancy:

1860 Dist. 13, Lincoln Co., TN Census [enum. 18 Jul 1860] page 104
Line 38, 771/741
Nancy Reeves 66 F 3000 600 Virginia (Column 13 marked = can't read or write)
Nancy Cole 30 F 700 400 Tenn
Henry Cole 7 M 150 400 Do (Tenn) (Column 12 marked = attended school within the year)

So my question is this... does anyone know if the 1860 census is Nancy (SWANNER) REEVES, daughter, Nancy (REEVES) COLE, wife of John COLE, and grandson Henry COLE? I haven't seen any of the COLE information accounting for this particular Henry COLE, though he's born the same time frame as the one put in
1860 Census Independence County, Arkansas, Household 352
Cole, John W. 30 Tennessee Farmer
Elizabeth 23 Tennessee
William H. 7 Tennessee
John W. 4 Tennessee
Jacob A. 3 Tennessee
George A. 10/12 Tennessee
Howard, George W. 18 Kentucky laborer
Susan E. 17 Tennessee

with the William H. being William Henry COLE.

I have John COLE m. Nancy REEVES 12 Jan 1852 in Lincoln Co., TN, and then nothing. I thought I'd found her in 1860, but now I'm utterly confused.

I would greatly appreciate any help sorting this out.

Coles - Penny - Evercreech
George Coles and his brother James emigrated from Somersetshire, England sometime early in the 19th century. George first settled at Greens Shore, now called St. Eleanor's, but soon moved to Milton. A few years later his brother James moved to Charlottetown. James was married to Sarah Tally and had a large family, among them the Hon. George Coles who was the first premier of the province of Prince Edward Island, Canada.
George received a conveyance of land in St. Eleanor's on 24 November 1812 but from the records he had a son born there in January of the same year. In 1814 this child was baptized in Milton.
It is assumed that George and James and their wives emigrated together but this is not certain. If so then they came between the summer of 1809 and 1810 for James was married in Evercreech, Somerset, England in May 1809 and his eldest child was born in Charlottetown in September of 1810. George and Margaret are said to have left behind them in England two children.
On his gravestone in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Milton the spelling of his surname is COALS and for this reason several generations of his descendants did not recognize him as their forefather.

The story before Prince Edward Island
It had been suspected that George Coles and James Coles were the sons of George Coles and Catherine Penny. This suspicion came about purely by the fact that James Coles and his wife Sarah Tally called their second born son John Daniel Penny Coles and their first born son was George Coles, so the Penny name stuck out there and was worthy of researching in that direction.
A baptism for James Coles was finally found in Pylle, Somerset at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, he was baptized 29 Feb 1784 to George Coles and Catherine Penny. A baptism for George has not yet been found. George Coles and Catherine Penny were married at Saint Peter’s Church in Evercreech, Somerset on 8 Jun 1768. At the time of there marriage George was listed as being from the parish of Doulting, Somerset, and Catherine from the parish of Evercreech, Somerset. From this marriage the following children have been found baptized, 1. John, on 28 May 1774, at St. Peter and Paul Church, Shepton Mallet, Somerset 2. Stephen, on 14 June 1778, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset 3. William, on 7 May 1780, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset 4. and James as above 5. Issacher, on 20 Nov 1785, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset, he was buried 16 Dec 1786 in Evercreech, Somerset 6. Issacher, on 21 Mar 1788, at St. Thomas-a-Becket Church, Pylle, Somerset, he was buried 15 Nov 1789 in Evercreech, Somerset.
George Coles, gravestone reads George Coals died November 12, 1846 aged 76 years Native of Summersetshire, England, this would have George born about 1770.
In conclusion, George Coles, where was he baptized, the records in the parishes of Evercreech, Pylle, Doulting, Shepton Mallet, Brewham, Nunney, East Pennard, Ditcheat have been searched, have the transcribers missed him, were the records illegible for that period in any of these records, is he hiding under a spelling issue? Parishes that are worthy of researching next could be Milton, Bruton, Pilton, Cranmore, Clevedon, Batcombe.
Are there any other persons researching this family? Are there any living descendants of any of these people who may be still in England? Who were Catherine Penny's parents?
searching for possible Jewish ancestry

I am searching for possible Jewish ancestry. It is suspected it might exist on my mother's side of the family. My mother was Kathleen Olivia Coles. She was born March 17, 1950 in Miami, Dade, FL. Her father was Walter Albert Coles, born Nov. 16, 1923, probably in FL. I've traced the Coles family to England and Wales. This is not normally where would think to check for Jewish lineage, however according to Wikipedia there have been Jews in England at least since 1066. My mother's mother was Colleen Dudding, born Aug. 16, 1925 in VA. I am not sure where the Duddings are ultimately from. They appear to have been in America since at least 1822. If anyone out there can point me in the right direction for my research, or can offer further info, it would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

James Stiles Coles

My gg grandfather, James Stiles Coles b. Jan 1835 England, d. 23 Nov 1918 Bridgeport, CT, lived in Newtown, CT for most of his adult life. The family legend is that when their eldest brother inherited the farm, James, along with his 2 brothers, went to England (from Ireland?), or maybe went to London to seek employment. While there, they were "pressed into service" into the British Navy. They jumped ship in Tripoli and split up. One brother went to Australia, one went to Canada (Brittish Columbia?) and my ancestor went to CT (approx. 1857). Any of you ever heard the same tale, or do you have anyone in your tree that matches his info?

Thank you Sarge. Solomon & Elizabeth McCord Coles were my 4th great grandparents. I descend from their son James C. Coles who married Mary Pearson. I don't have a lot on the Hayes line, and maybe you can fill in some blanks for me on descendants. I would be interested in hearing any antecdotes you have on Isaac Hayes and Polly Coles Hayes.

Descendants of Mary Polly Coles

Generation No. 1

1. MARY POLLY5 COLES (SOLOMON4, SOLOMON3, DANIEL2, SOLOMON1) was born December 17, 1811 in Guernsey Co., Ohio, and died September 22, 1848. She married ISAAC HAYES November 24, 1831 in Guernsey Co., Ohio1, son of BAILEY HAYES and MARY STUBBS. He was born July 19, 1809 in Ohio.

More About ISAAC HAYES and MARY COLES:
Marriage: November 24, 1831, Guernsey Co., Ohio1

Children of MARY COLES and ISAAC HAYES are:
i. ISAAC COLE HAYES, b. Bet. September 30, 1844 - 1846, Zanesville, Muskingham Co., Ohio; d. September 1931, Evansville, Vandberburgh Co., Indiana.

Generation No. 2

2. LYDIA6 HAYES (MARY POLLY5 COLES, SOLOMON4, SOLOMON3, DANIEL2, SOLOMON1) was born October 16, 1832 in Ohio, and died March 23, 1911 in near Zanesville. She married WILLIAM HOWELL June 16, 1850 in Allen Co., Indiana, son of UNKNOWN HOWELL. He was born Abt. 1829 in Ohio, and died August 04, 1881 in Lafeyette Twsp., Allen Co., Indiana.

Notes for LYDIA HAYES:

Howell

Mrs. Lydia Howell, seventy-eight years of age, is dead at her home near Zanesville. Death was due to complications. Surviving she leaves six daughters and one son.

Fort Wayne News, March 25, 1911

Notes for WILLIAM HOWELL:
August 5, 1881
ANOTHER SHELDON TRAGEDY
William Howell, a Farmer, Shot and Killed by James Baker, an Ex-Convict.

Yesterday morning, at 11:30 o'clock, a telegram was received by Sheriff Cosgrove from Sheldon, in Lafayette Township, stating that James Baker had shot William Howell, and summoning the officer to come at once and arrest Baker. Further particulars state that Howell was hired by the wife of James Baker, a farmer living in Lafayette Township four and a half miles west of Sheldon, and near to the post office of Zanesville in Wells County, to assist in stacking wheat. Baker objected to Howell and ordered him from the premises. Howell refused to obey the order and climbed upon a stack of wheat where he say and parleyed with Baker for a time. Baker, after a few threats, seized a rifle and shot Howell, who died in a few minutes. Howell's son was working in the field nearby, and hearing the report of the rifle came to his father's aid, whereupon Baker reloaded his rifle and shot at young Howell but missed him. Baker was under the influence of liquor at the time. The above particulars were all that had been received from the scene of the murder up to the time of writing 10 o'clock p.m. Sheriff Cosgrove left to arrest Baker at noon yesterday in his own conveyance, and has not returned to the present time. At 2 o'clock in the afternoon a note from the sheriff was received at the jail, summoning the coroner and deputy and Deputy Sheriff Miller, who left at once. It is supposed that Baker, defying the citizens thereabouts, struck out for the thick woods where he is hiding, and the sheriff and his men are searching for him. The Sheldon telegraph office is closed at 6 o'clock p.m. and no further particulars were obtainable last evening over the wires, and we are forced to await the arrival of Sheriff Cosgrove.

The Murderer: From one acquainted with the murderer, Baker, we learn that he served a term in the penitentiary some years ago for stabbing his brother-n-law, Sam Carpenter. Baker is said to be inoffensive and well disposed when sober, but when under the influence of liquor is a very dangerous individual. It is also said that Baker was jealous of the supposed attentions of Howell to Mrs. Baker, and that this was probably the cause of the murder. Baker is described as a tall, slim man with a sharp, emaciated face, free from beard.

The Victim: William Howell was a farmer of middle age and lived on a place owned by himself. He was lately assessor of Lafayette Township and has frequently served upon juries in the several county courts. The murdered man was well-to-do and leaves a family of nine children.

There were several other articles regarding the murder, all various accounts of the above information, Baker eluded authorities until being captured on August 9, 1881. He gave the following statement of his escape after the shooting: The fatal shot was fired about half-past 9 o'clock, and he remained in the barn from that time until about 11 o'clock, when he deliberately walked away, through the excited and apparently powerless crowd assembled about the scene of the tragedy. After reaching a corn field, about three hundred yards away, he dropped to his face and crawled for a long distance along a board fence, under vines and weeks until he reached an orchard, where he ate some green apples and secured a drink of water. From here crawled to an old straw stack, in a secluded spot, where he hid himself so securely that if the pangs of hunger had not forced him out, he could never have been found. His miserable home, which since the murder has been deserted by his wife, is described as a most uninviting place, being surrounded by a deluge of weeds and vines.

BOUND OVER:
The preliminary examination of Baker took place yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, before Esquire Pratt, when the prisoner, through his attorney, J. Q. Stratton, waived examination, and was bound over on the charge of murder to await the action of the grand jury, which meets the first week in September next.

NOTES:
Judge Sam Sinclair appeared for the state.
Baker's wife says she will furnish money with which to prosecute him.
Where were all the good citizens when Baker walked away in broad daylight, only two hours after the murder?

Apparently, per cousin Jim Baker, James Baker was paroled from prison sometime around 1900. His wife and nephew John Seymore Baker picked him up, but because no one could (or would) care for him because he was ill both physically and mentally, he was deposited at the Allen County Poor Farm, and later returned to prison. He died there in 1906.

More About WILLIAM HOWELL:
Cause of Death: shot with rifle
Census 1860: June 14, 1860, Indiana, Allen Co., Lafayette Twsp., Nine Mile, p. 683
Census 1870: Lafayette, Allen, Indiana; Roll: M593_298; Page: 483; Image: 49.
Census 1880: Lafayette, Allen, Indiana; Roll: T9_264; Family History Film: 1254264; Page: 442C; Enumeration District: 116; Image: 0706.

More About WILLIAM HOWELL and LYDIA HAYES:
Marriage: June 16, 1850, Allen Co., Indiana
Marriage book: Book 2, p. 235

Children of LYDIA HAYES and WILLIAM HOWELL are:
i. I would like to get in touch with her as she is descended from the same line as my husband. The family came from Bath.

I am going there on Friday and will take lots of photos of where the COLES lived in Bathwick.

Hope someone out there can help!

Thanks,
Liz Coles in Munich
