My late grandmother was Lottie Coles of Danville, VA. Her parents were Joe & Lucy, and Joe's parents were Sanford and Mary E. I didn't know grandma Lottie very well, or that side of the family, so while I know I am a relative of the folks you've listed here, I don't have any information on them. I could ask an older 2nd cousin of mine who lives in Richmond, VA. She may know. I'll stay in touch.

Hello

I am in search of my lineage also. My grandfather was named roy coles, his father was ennis coles, and I believe his father was named dan coles and married a lady named sally. I am african-american but pictures of my great-grandfather does not look as if he is 100% black. It is rumored that someone in the bloodline is american indian due to the reddish hue of our skin tones. Their is also a rumor that they (dan & sally)were farmers for a man with the last name coles who took them in. the majority of my family is from danville VA & West virginia. I am looking for any information of how we obtained this last name. My grandfather had 3 other siblings that i know of, 2 sisters and a brother. I only know of a great aunt named jean. any info you may have may help me :(

Hey kenansuz: Wow, a response to a 2003 question. Cool! I do not know if my 3 John COLES had a middle name of Gilham. Grandfather and Great Grandfather John COLES lived on Boultbee Ave. in Toronto, not far from Great Uncle William COLES on Craven Road abt. 1910's to 40's. GG Grandfather John COLES was married to Mary PHILLIPS and likely in England. They had COLES sons named John, Thomas, Sydney, James, and William. Is anything familiar?

thanks, Dan Slater

Job Coles - Burlington Co, New Jersey

I'm looking for more information on a Job Coles that lived in Chester Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. He had 2 sons, Clayton R. (b1816) and Isaiah T. (b1818). His wife was Hannah - sometimes listed with the surname Lewallen, however I've located an 1815 Burlington County marriage certificate that says Braddock. Probably some other children in there, but not certain. It appears that there could have been 2-3 Job Coles in the area.

I've assumed that he is the son of Job Coles/Elizabeth Tomlin, but am looking for confirmation of that.

Hi Cheryl!
This is so cool to hear from someone else who is a Coles. I've been searching for info on Daniel Lee Coles but came up empty. It was like he was erased. With the info that you gave me I now know why.
Here's what I have from my Aunt Patsy, one of Winthrop's daughters'.

Winthrop had brothers Charles, Harold, and Hubert, and sisters Dorothy and Maimie.

Winthrop's father: Daniel Lee Coles, we were told, was born in Appomatox, Virginia April 9, 1865, the date and city of the surrender of General Robert E. Lee to the Union army, therefore the middle name Lee. There is a city in Virginia or West Virginia named Coles, and an Edward Coles was a friend of Thomas Jefferson. You can read about him on this website http://www.poemsforfree.com/edwardcoles.html It could be that we are related to him. There are lots of Coles in Virginia. When I worked with the actress Kim Coles, she said that her father was from Virginia and that we were probably related. Also, we could be related to Natalie Cole as her father Nat King Cole said that his family had dropped the "s" on Coles many years ago.

We were told that Daniel Coles had been a coal miner in Virginia and eventually died of Black Lung disease somewhere around 1910, we think in Chicago, but I could find no record of it when I searched years ago.

Winthrop's mother: Frances (Fanny) Teakle (spelling?). We don't know where she was born, but it could have been Michigan or Illinois. My father told us that at different points their family lived in Kalamazoo and Dowagiac, Michigan. I think there may be relatives of ours there. We do have some cousins that I know of in Illinois, one of them being Frances, named after Winthrop's mother.

Sometime after Daniel Coles died, Fannie remarried to a man name Thomas Bowen or Bowman or ??, not sure of real name or spelling.

Winthrop's grandparents: I don't know. I remember hearing the name Thurman, and there was a Lucy Thurman that our Aunt Dorothy told us we were related to, but I don't remember how.

Hi Bill,

My original immigrant ancestor was Robert Cole(s) who came with Winthrop in 1630. I have that he was from Suffolk, England, though I'm not sure his exact origin has ever been proved conclusively.

Records are inconsistent with respect to "Cole" vs. "Coles" for Robert and the early generations, though "Coles" predominates and most descendant branches eventually settled on "Coles".

As for where in the Colonies, Robert left Massachusetts Bay Colony and was in Providence, Rhode Island, by 1638, where he was among the founding members of the First Baptist Church of Providence that year. He died in Warwick, Rhode Island in 1653. His widow remarried and she along with most of their children were among the first settlers of Oyster Bay, on Long Island, where my branch remained until after the Revolutionary War.

Hope this helps!

Hi Denise

Interested in your Robert Cole [s]. Where did he reside in the Colonies? Did he come as Robert Cole? I have a guy in AZ who has a Robert Cole and his name is Cole - BUT he and I match at 67 markers in Y-DNA test. I am a Coles whose ancestor came to NC in 1754 from Gorey, County Wexford, Ireland. We are trying to see where our lines cross. His later ancestor was Solomon Cole.

Bill Coles
wmtempco@aol.com

Hi Jan,

Did you ever find more on the ancestry of your Enoch Coles? I just stumbled on a bio of John H. Coles, shoemaker, of Grundy Co, Illinois; bio published in 1900. It says John H was b. Delaware Co, PA, one of 16 children of Enoch Coles of Westchester Co, NY, who was himself the descendent of one of 2 Coles brothers who arrived in 1642. If this is your line, then you are not connected to my Coles line, descendents of Robert Cole(s) who came with Winthrop in 1630, at least not on this side of the Atlantic, but maybe this can help you connect up with the right line.

Anyway, here's a link to the bio of John H Coles:
http://files.usgwarchives.org/il/grundy/bios/coles78gbs.txt

Is this your family?

Denise
Hi Colin,
In you original question you stated that Charles Henry Coles was the son of George Coles. Do you have any info on George. I have a George Coles b 1815 and a Charles b1819. But can find no further info on either of them. You can view my Coles family at www.rif1945.tribalpages.com.

Best wishes and happy hunting

Robyn

Thanks (very belatedly) for this useful nugget. Been away from my fam tree stuff for a while.

One question: how/where did you find this? Have tried to find it myself by searching through ancestry's Times collection without luck.

Thanks.

COLES. Probably the best name in the History of mankind.

It came from noble beginnings in England. One very well known Coles was Edward Coles, my great Great Grandfather, the Emancipator from Virginia. He served as Governor of Illinois for years after he freed the slaves his father owned in Virginia. Edward's father was a military man from England and settled in Virginia.

I am a direct decendent althouigh mixed a bit but so is everyone else. I am proud of my heritage and the name COLES!
