Colis Surname?

Hi Bonnie,
I just read your message on the message board of Ancestry.com
and I was greatly interested. You see, I not long ago found out that my paternal
grandmother changed the spelling of her last name and the name of ,my father,(her only child)
after she divorced my grandfather. My father was only 3 or 4 years old. The correct spelling is COLAS,
and she changed it to COLIS. I have never run into anyone with that last name. I have only one brother,
and as the only name bearer in our family in our generation, he felt he she have it
legally changed back to the correct spelling COLAS. My brother has 2 children(males) from his 1st marriage
1 daughter from his 2nd marriage, who carry and were born with the spelling COLIS. His 3rd and hopefully last
marriage, he has another daughter who carries and was born with the corrected spelling.
So, you see I can relate to your mother's plight.
My paternal grand father was Joseph Ernest Colas. He was born in Edgard, Louisiana in 1897.
He had many siblings, one who moved to N. Y. many many year ago. I don't know if this might be a link for you,
but the situations are so similar.
If you would like any othe rinformation, please feel free to e-mail me.

Sharon Colas Marquez

Colis/Colas

His name was Eugene Colas Sr. He is listed in the Social Security
Death Index. I don't know much about him, as I really didn't know much about
my Grandfather either. I met him only twice in my life. I do have a copy of a
marriage certificate for Eugene, when he married Frances Bartholomy at the
Catholic Church (St. John the Baptist) in Edgard Louisiana.
I know their parents were Ernest Colas and Eugenie Fortier, both born in 1860.
I don't know if this will provide any information for you. I can sympathize
with your problem. Let me know how this turns out for you.

Sharon Colas Marquez
