Finally Ive gotten back to these posts. I didnt think the name Coll would be so popular - and Dennis Coll, Maurice Coll, or Dennis Maurice Coll -- who would think there would be matches. Thanks for the information about 2 Maurices -- I bet if we added in the Morris's (alt. spelling) it would be even more confusing.

Hello Are we related? This is what I know, my great grandfather was Marice Coll, children were Edward, John, Jeremiah, Bridget, Mary, Nancy, Bella and Dennis Maurice Coll (my grandfather) b. in donegal in Feb 1869. I too am Dennis Maurice Coll and am stunned to see how many of us there are. Recently on a stop over in Dublin a hotel clerk mistook me for a former guest - Dennis Coll from Donegal - thats what started my search

Hello, Joanna. It's good to hear from you! I did a presentation on Kate Wheelwright and her family at your reunion in Rochester. I wish I had some news on Elaine for you, but I don't. The last time I spoke with her has to be about six or seven years ago now, and she said she was thinking of moving to Florida. She's no longer in the Rochester phone book.

Please email me at care19161@frontiernet.net, and we can put our heads together to track down Elaine. I have a fair amount of information on Kate Wheelwright, some of which I got from Elaine, and she may have gotten it from you. However, I have some information from other sources as well, that may be of interest to you, mainly newspaper articles and minutes from the meetings of one of our two local branches of the American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic, of which she and Charlie were both active members.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Pat Carey
care19161@frontiernet.net

Gary,
Thanks for your note.

My Toal's father lived in Gweedore, his father was Tomas from Inishboffin. Toal is strongly a family name in my Colls as is Maurice. (The other mnames are very widespread so no great significance in them). I assume your Cecial is Sile (often written as Cicely on Census, and other records in Engilsh). My Toal was born in 1816.

If our family trees are connected and I think it is very likely then the link is prossibly at the level of Tomas, (My G G G Grandfather) who could be a brother of your Toal.
The only siblings of Toal's that I am 100% sure of are Tomas and Maurice whose lines I can trace to the present. There may have been other brothers (who stayed in Inishboffin).

my email is maryandmark@aol.com
Regards,
Mary

HiJohn, Thanks for the info. I always suspected that there was a connection between Catalonian Coll's and Irish Coll's.But this surname is very ancient in Catalonia that pre-dates the 1800's, in fact there are many towns that carry Coll e.g. El Coll, Coll de Nargo, Coll de Guix and where it is pronounced Co-eee or Coy in the Catalan dialect. But i also noticed that there's an island west of Scotland named Isle of Coll which i presume was named a long time ago. So how this connection came about and when would really be interesting to know. Something you'll probably find to be cool is that Spain's present top General in the armed forces is named Fulgencio Coll. And if you go to youtube search for Tip y Coll so you can see videos of a very famous comedy duo from Barcelona. Suerte JCOLL

After years of mystery and looking for answers about Colls, I found this page , My grandfather was John Coll Married to Jenny Delargy from We think Donnegal,Ballycastle, and when we were kids told grandad was would you believe Australian , grandfather was involved in something everyone wanted kept quiet, now there is only one of that family still alive , John and Jenny had 5 children Hester, Brigit John Harry and Patrick. The Delavera name was put to me by a spirtitualist some months ago ,I know its dubious but there you go. Would love to find out if I had a family before Grandfather

I'm seeking any info on Bella Coll who arrived on board Astoria at New York on 9th September 1901. The manifest, line 12, appears to show that she had a cousin called James O'Neill in Pennsylvania but am unsure whether she stayed in New York or went to PA.

She had other relatives in the Bronx, one of whom Eugene Coll died circa 1931.

I have an old letter indicating a connection to McHugh who had a son training to be a pries.

Bella is thought to have originated from Rarone or near Beragh, County Tyrone, Ireland and was born circa 1875.

Hello! My name is Elizabeth Coll my husbands great grandfather was Andres Coll Puigres. He was born in Spain,IL.in 1856 and arrived in Puerto Rico in 1876. What caught my eye was the info about the two brothers since I heard my father in law said that his family Coll came from two brothers who one of them took residence in Puerto Rico and the other possible in Venezuela. Could we be searching for the same person? Glad to hear a reply. Thank you.

Hello,

My family come from the Colls of Gola Island. I am not personally intelligent in the history or the family tree of the Coll family but my sister has taken a great interest and has built up a "reasonable knowledge" of the Coll clan from Gweedore in the last few years. My surname is Doherty and my mother was a Coll from Gola Island. I will certainly ask her if she has any knowledge of your family.
What I am aware of is that we did have close relatives of the name "Diver" and we believe we are related to Vince Colls family also. So I do believe we are related in some way.

Yours sincerely,

Patrick Doherty.

Hi, yes I have seen Tip y Coll on youtube but I do not understand much Spanish LOL.
The island west of Scotland named Coll is Gaelic for Colla witch can mean Hazel like the trees and shrubs.
It seems the surname Coll maybe from MacColl in Gaelic Mac Colla ( the Gaelic mac, meaning 'son' ).
Colla was the Gaelic personal name and Colla Uais, an Irish king of the fourth century
Mac Colla son of Colla:
Many say that Colls are descended from this Coll who was a son of the high king Nial of the Nine Hostages at about the time of St.Patrick 385 AD.
Hope this makes sense LOL.
Very best regards John Coll

My grandfather was William John (John)Coll born to William Coll and Catherine Coyle in Ireland. Imigrated to this country in 1851 on the West Point with father, William, and siblings, Cornelius (Neil), Ellen, and Patrick. Other siblings are Grace (never married) and Charles. Pittsburgh census 1860 and 1870 show this family living together. I also have copies of Pittsburgh directories. The father, William, does not show up in the 1860 census so assumed died. Have marriage records of WJ, Charles, and Ellen (Loughran). Also have accumulated information about Neil. mariepathutch@comcast.net

Hi Ellen,

Kitty had 6 other brothers and 2 sisters. Frederick and Michael (twins), Dermot, Thomas, Bernard, Charles, Mary and Ann. Thomas Coll's father was Thomas also, and his father before him was Thomas (born around 1790) who is also my great great great grandfather. They were all from Gweedore in Donegal. You might like to have a look at the Gweedore Geneaology resources website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~donegal/gweedorepro.... There are a lot of Colls on it and there are a few of us trying to track down who is related to who but it is slow going. We think that Dermot and Charles married in America but don't have any details on this. Others married in Donegal but we haven't gone as far as checking any siblings yet. A lot of other info is coming through from those who are in their 80s in Gweedore who remember a lot of the connections.

Caroline Coll

Joseph H. Coll

I am seeking birth and death information for Joseph H. Coll. He married Della May Gordon b. 1878, probably in the Missouri area. She died in 1937 and is buried in Mt. Washington Cemetery, Jackson County, MO but I have no info on Joseph. Joseph and Della had two children: Ethel and Frank. I understand Ethel was married several times but the only married name I have for her is Snyder.
In 1900, Joseph, Della, Ethel and Frank (listed as Call) were living with JM (John)and Anna Gordon, parents of Della. He is listed as 10 years older than Della which would make his DOB about 1868.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ethel Coll photo

I have a small photo of Ethel Coll Scharf Snyder and her friend Annie Carrick. I don’t know where the photo was taken. Ethel was born in 1895 and lived in Cass County Missouri and then in Jackson County Missouri. I lost her trail after that.

I also have a photo of Elsa Snyder and one of Goldie and Mable Snyder. I believe they are related to Fred C. Snyder who lived in Jackson County Missouri when he was married to Ethel Coll.

It is my understanding from family information that Ethel was married “numerous times”. I’ve only found John Scharf and Fred C. Snyder to date.

If anyone is interested in a copy of any of these photos, please let me know. I will email them to you.
Patrick Coll

Patrick Coll was born March 1, 1905, near Castlerea, Co. Roscommon. His parents were Tom Coll and Maria Dowd. He went to New Jersey in 1930 and apparently later to New York. When in New Jersey he stayed with members of the Dowd family, who were involved in law enforcement. Family lore says he had seven children and that his wife died young.Patrick himself died in July 1972, in New Jersey. That is absolutely all we have.
We dont know if his descendants are in New Jersey or New York. Any help greatly appreciated

Hi, I wrote that original post several years ago, and I just came across it again today. My great grandmother's father was also Maurice/Morris. My aunts say my their mother went my Mary "Mauwish" (it sounds better when they say it.) Someone had gotten in contact with me back then and given me a bunch of info. I'll try to see if I can pull it back together and send it to you. I had sent a lot of it to an uncle, and I've changed my email address since then. If youre interested you can email me at samanthaswain@live.com. Good luck.
