Hi Charlotte,

Abraham and Mary Ann Laura were my Grandmother's grandparents, her mother being Emily Frances.

I am not very happy to give out details of relatives beyond this on this public site, so if you e-mail me on shanecoulson@yahoo.co.uk I can tell you more!

I would absolutely love some information on both the Dore's and the Spry's. I have a certain amount but maybe if we combine efforts we might get further.

Furthermore, I would love some photographs. I too have some, so we can swop!

Kind regards,
Shane
p.s. In case I didn't tell you before, i'm female.

Hi!

Abraham Collenette married Mary Ann Laura Dore- they had several children including a son, Herbert, who is my Nan's father.

I have photographs of Gatliff Buildings where they lived from both the 19th century and present day if you'd like them.

I have also traced the Dores back to the Isle of Wight and the Sprys back to Cornwall as far as this website will allow, and am happy to send you what I've found if you're interested.

Herbert married Elizabeth Tincken and had three children, my Nan, Jeanne Marie, Ivy Louise and Donald James.

I'm so pleased to have found a relation! Which of Abraham and Mary Ann's children are you descended from?

Charlotte

Hi,
Jemima and James Collenette are also my gt-gt-gt grandparents- they had a son Abraham who is my Nan (born Jeanne Collenette)'s grandfather.
Jemima Collenette was born a Whitcombe, and married James Collenette who was originally from Guernsey. Jemima was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, but as yet I have been unable to trace much more information than that.

I hope that this helps!

Charlotte Roberts

Hi Shane,

I wasnt doubting you in the slightest and I appreciate any help given. Thank you for the feedback about the website, I shall feed this onto Bret and see what he has to say. Where did you locate it, search engine perhaps?

I wouldnt know where to start looking for Rents, Tax, etc as you have mentioned but as you have already been through this area of research, perhaps it would be a waste of my time anyway.

If you dont mind me asking, how did you originally find out about the 'papers', and if I were to try and locate them, which direction would you point me in?

Thanks again for any help.
Louise

Hi Louise,

Sorry about calling you Lucy. I have seen your partner's website. Personally if it were mine I wouldn't have given information on individuals who are still alive.

When I told you that there were two more Whitcombe children, both female. I was telling you the truth. There are very few ways to trace this back, unless you are lucky enough to be in the possession of a source material that confirms this. As already stated I have an
inheritance document that confirms the family line.

Another way to find out this information would be to look to baptisms. I have already had this done and to no avail. There appear to be christenings for the four boys but not the two girls. I have already had the census checked and prior to 1841 were there were a few Whitcombe's living in Trowbridge but the records are scant and only mention individuals as per quota of men and women in roads. Not names.

Unfortunately apart from the Church of Latter Day Saints web-site and the VRI's. Other records you could look to are Tax, Rents etc., Poor Law, etc., and see if you can find anything? However I don't think you will find anything else online.

Regards,
Shane

Hi Shane,

By Lucy, I presume you mean me.

Unfortunately, I have not managed to get to see the Parish records so know little about John Whitcomb or Ann Heale. I can not even be definate on John's parents which is really where my Whitcomb tree has come to a stand still.

My partner is a Whitcombe, therefore it is his family tree I am researching. I used the term 'my' in the loose sense as its easier that way.

Anymore details on John and Ann Heale would be appreciated or if you could just point me to somewhere on the internet where I can further my findings and information, I would be grateful. I had no idea John was a widower and furthermore have no information on his first/previous marriages.

Kind regards,

Louise

Hi Lucy,

I thought that the Whitcombe's were your partner's relatives??

I have no idea why the Whitcombe family moved to Greenwich, from Trowbridge prior to 1841. I can only assume that John Whitcombe, senior having retired from his main career, felt there were more job opportunities in this area. If you look at the census information carefully you will see that other members of the extended family appear to have moved to Greenwich as well.

If you have seen the parish records which relate to John's wedding to Ann Heale you would have noticed he was a widower at the time of the marriage in 1816.

Regards,

Jemima Whitcomb / Collenette Family 1861 Census.

I am struggling to find the Collenette family consisting of James b.1822, Jemima b.1821, James b.1849 and John b.1859 on the 1861 census. I presume the spelling of Collenette has been drastically spelt wrong as they are nowhere to be found. I have located them on the 1851 in London and James b.1822 died in 1865 also in London. They are on the 1871 in London with daughter Mary as well. If anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction I'd be very greatful.

Also, I am interested to know who Jemima's parents are.

Thanks.

Louise

My gt, gt, gt grandfather's name was James Collenette. In later life he was a 'boot maker' (cordwainer), in London and a 'jobbing master' (an occasional ships captain). I have found out he and his wife Jemima had at least one son James Joseph in Jersey, Channel Islands and a later son, John Whitcomb in London Pimlico. It was originally thought James came from Guernsey. If anybody can supply me with any information I would be extremely grateful!!!

Thank you in advance,
Kind regards,

Mrs Shane Coulson

Sorry for the delay in my response. Have been having trouble with my computer. Thank you for your reply. The problem I seem to have finding out about the Collenette's of Guernsey/London is that there were lots of Collenette's who came from Guernsey, some moving to Jersey and then London and if you look at their names and remember it was an island, they all appear to be related. The problem appears to be that those who have done research, do not appear to want to share. I will when I have confirmed my theories.

Since your reply I think I have found out which line my family descended from, although this will need checking. The line is that of Abraham Collenette and Ann Herivel. I will need to take a trip to Guernsey and Jersey to look into things. Thank you for your response. I wonder if your old teacher knows much about Collenette history?

Kind regards,

Shane Coulson

I think it was his father who wrote a novel or two based on his own experiences in the Navy (don't know if RN or MN though). I believe he was also the headmaster of a boys school there too. Any use to you?

Hi Kirsty,

I have now been to Guernsey to the Priaulx Library and have traced my Collenette family. I have found that you are a distant relative.

Regards,

Shane Coulson
England

Hello Shane,
My name Is Kristy Collenette. I am the grand daughter of Leonard George Collenette and Mona Grace Collenette (nee Champion). They migrated to Australia in 1966. We are part of the Collenettes descended from Nicholas Collenette (1851) and Emily Ferbrache.
A gentleman by the name of Peter Collenette from England is currently working on our family tree and has almost finished. If you would like to see what he has discovered I would be more than happy to send you a copy. Alternitly I can get Peters details and send you them, this way you can contact him personally. The details we have recieved include us in tree 5.
Regards
Kristy Collenette

The Collenette of Guernsey, Jersey, London

I wonder whether there is anybody out there who can help me I am looking for information regarding a family of Collenette's who moved from Guernsey/poss Jersey to London in the 1850's.

I am looking for a Mr James Collenette who was married to a Jemima Whitecombe of (Trowbridge, Wiltshire) sometime between 1840 and 1850, so far I have been unable to find any record of a wedding taking place in England, so it is possible they were married in the Channel Islands.

It is rumoured that James was once the Harbour Master at St. Peter Port, Guernsey.

If anybody can help me I would be very grateful.

Kind regards,

Shane Coulson
