I am a descendant of William L Collie, born in South Carolina/Virginia around 1794. He had 2 brothers, James-b.1786 in South Carolina/virginia and Charles b. 1798 in South Carolina. I believe there is a posibility that there were 2 other brothers named Benjamin b. 1800-1810 and Lewis b. 1790-1800. They are listed on the 1830 Lincoln County Tennessee along with William L Collie and are in the right age-range. Charles was listed on the 1830 McNairy County Tennessee census and James was listed on the 1830 Henderson County Tennessee census. I would be happy to share all I have and would be interested in what you may have. My email address is chadecollie@gmail.com
Chad E Collie

My Collie family lived in neighboring Jackson County Tennessee in the 1820 Census. William L Collie was born in 1794 in SOuth Carolina. The census shows two of his brothers, Charles and James. I have to believe the two families are closely related, but have been unable to determine how thus far. I'd be happy to share all I have.

I was told that my ancestor, Algernon Floyd Cole, was listed in the index of this book. If anyone has this book, would it be possible for you to do a lookup for me, and see what his connection may be in this family?

My great grandparents from Pittsylvania County, VA were Robert Walter Wilkinson and Bertha Mahala Cole. Her parents were Algernon Floyd Cole and Lucy Prewitt. I believe I also have Dodsons and Chaneys in my family, but I don't remember finding any Collies.

Hi Laurie,
In a book by William Collie called "The Memoirs of William Collie" published in Melbourne in 1908 a similar story is related. What he said was that when two brothers named McDonald who had survived the massacre at Glencoe were asked their name the said it was Collie as it was the first thing they could think of as a Collie dog walked passed and they did not want to admit to being MacDonalds.
The book includes a detailed genealogy of his family. A lot of the family history is also available at rootsweb.com by searching for the Collie name in Fochabers and Rothiemurchus.
Hi, im not sure if this is the right "alexander collie", but the one in my family was a doctor around 1820's and travelled to australia in one of the first, prehaps the first settlement in Western Australia.

He discovered two rivers that i know of. One he named after himself, 'Collie River'. There is also a town these days which is named after Alexander Collie called Collie.

He also travelled south and became friends with the aboriginals, he apparently died in Albany (south Western Australia) and was buried next to the aboriginal tribal leader, who was a close friend of his.

This gentleman was my Great Grandfather. He was married to Margaret Nicolson (D.O.B.: 17/03/18??). They had four (4) sons John Milne (Jnr), Maurice, Ian & Neil. They along with (not quite sure how many) their sons travelled by boat in 1926 to Australia - where they resided until their deaths. I'm not sure when Margaret died (I don't have any memories of her). However I do remember attending my Great Grandfather's funeral in the 1970's as a young child.

Any information you can share on my Great Grandparents would be appreciated.

Looking for the Collie family in and around Lanark Scotland in the time period of 1850 to 1940. I believe one the children was a Rachel Collie who married a Robert Gracie. Possibly another child may have been Agnes Collie who married a Beith. The address I have for Agnes Beith is 45 Albany Drive, Lanark, Scotland. Would appreciated response from anyone with a possible connection to either the Collie or Gracie line.
Alan Griggs

I have been led to believe that Collie is an Anglo Saxon derivative of 'Black', or 'Coal'. There was the Collie and the Colliers, the ones who mined or worked with Coal.

It was also used to describe anything 'Dark' or 'Black' in Olde English.

Origin: Cole = Coal.

All the Best, Glenn.

Is the Charles Collie b 1797 SC, who married Margaret Clark, a brother to the Thomas Collie b 1810 NC, who married Elizabeth Hollis in McNairy Co., TN 5 Jan 1834. I strongly suspect that they are brothers because Charles was in McNairy Co., TN on the 1830 census. Then they both wound up in Hot Spring Co., AR. after spending some time in Mississippi. Can anyone confirm?

I'm truly sorry for taking so much time responding to your post. Have you contacted Betty? She's a very nice lady, and it was great finding her. She was able to take my research back many generations, to Scotland. Her book, when I last talked with her, was not in print, but she sent me copies of most of the information. She doesn't have a lot of the details of Joel's line, I need to compile that and get it to her. I've been off on several tangents after talking with her, mostly researching my g-grandfather's involvement in the Civil War. He was John Thomas, son of Joel. Which sibling of Joel are you descended from? Bob

Dear Don,

My great grandfather was a Peter Collie of Tarland, Aberdeenshire. In researching his family tree I came across information that the name Collie appeared to derive from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "the dark-headed one", i.e., a person with dark hair as opposed to the more normal fair hair of the northern European races of Norse and Saxon. This tends to make some sense as the sheep dog type known as the collie dog tends to be predominantly dark haired. Do you think this is a "fair" interpretation?

John McGee, Glasgow

Re: Collie Surname Origin

I am the great granddaughter of James Macgregor Collie, whom immigrated here in (I believe) the 1920's, with his lovely wife Agnes and my grandfather Hugh Arbufnot Collie.

James' wife Agnes told me a story 30 years ago, a few years before she died. I was only 10, and I am not certain if she was pulling my leg or not.

She said we changed our names in Scotland because of a family feud. There was another family that was going to "erase" the clan. She states there were a few family members held hostage in a home, and they changed their name to Collie to save their hind quarters. I remember something corny about, when asked their name they stumbled a minute when a Collie (dog) went walking past.

I don't recall what the name was prior - for some reason I have always believed she said it was Macgregor, but I was only 10, and that was thirty years ago.

My family immigrated to Battle Creek Michigan

Laurie Williams

Re: Collie Surname Origin

Collie as a surname originates from Scotland: more particularly from the lowland valleys to the East of Aberdeen.

I've been told of several meanings, all to do with the land, but the one that seems most probable to me is that it's old Gaelic for 'copse' or wood'. The other meanings I've heard of are 'farmer' and 'handy' (as in useful or competent).

The name has moved around the World since then, of course: to Canada, the U.S., New Zealand, and so on, but the dogs named after us seem to have been more prolific because it remains a relatively rare surname, albeit widely recognised.
