Glad you found some goodies in the pieces...The name Dewey sounds familiar but have no info in what I have availible from here. I've been in Fla. caring for my Dad (He was one of Millard's 14 children) since 3/07...but home and my main computer are in Madison Co.Virginia. Millard also went to Alexandria Va. around 1945 to find work after he lost a leg in a logging accident. I'll ask Dad's oldest sister if she knows the name...she's 87 and might recall.

If he was part of the Park eviction (circa 1936) you may find some info on this site:

http://www.klein-shiflett.com/shifletfamily/index.html

Check history and human interest first...they have a list of who they paid how much for their land...and if you are related to Greene Co. Collier's you are kin to some of the Shifflett's...no way around it...LOL.
I found ton's of branch info in their great obit collection as well.
Are you in Va area? I'm not an Ancestry paid member right now so it won't let me access your email addy...I do have a few longer files you might enjoy having but I'd prefer not posting them publicly. Write me at tra_beau@hotmail.com w/good id in subject line and be glad to share...Tracy

Thank you very much. All that is a great help. The family tree I started about 2 mths ago is up to 900 names but still hitting a dead end with May. I looked into maybe he was named after his real father but found a few other Mays. It was a fairly common name I guess. My line of Colliers have no current family trees. So far mine is the only one. Martin-Preston-Caswell-Amanda/Father?-May-Dewey-Junior-Sonny-Then me.

I am also looking into why Dewey Collier moved from Greene County to Alexandria Va in the early 1900's. About the same time a nat'l park was created in Greene county and some families were forced off their land.

Jason A. Collier

Jason,
I have nothing to offer on May Collier except that Amanda's Grandfather's name was May Haney but will keep my eyes open.
Martin Sr.however is my 4th GGrandfather through Preston, Smith, Wesley Smith, and Millard Collier. Smith is Casewell's brother...I do have some notes on him that might help.

Notes for Caswell Collier:
Actual Marriage Date, 27 Apr. 1837, Original Marriage Book of Rev. John Gibson, Albemarle, Co., Va., published by The Virginia Historical Society, 31 Dec. 1923.

1840, Greene Co., Va., Census, H of HH, 1 male 20-30, 2 females 0-5, & 1 female 20-30.

1850, Greene Co., Va., Census, H of HH, age 30, living next door to Preston Collier.

1860, Greene Co., Va., Census, H of HH, age 47.

1870, Greene Co., Va., Census, H of HH, age 58. Listed as Campbell Collier.

Also Notes for Amanda (Manda) J. Collier:
1850, Greene Co., Va. Census, Child, age 4.

1860, Greene Co., Va., Census, Child, age 14. Listed as M. M. Collier.

1870, Greene Co., Va., Census, Child, age 22.

1900, Greene Co., Va., Census, Wife, born May 1848, age 52, married 23 years, 6 of 6 children living.

Martin Sr. is my brickwall...He is listed as Head of Household 1790 Orange Co Va. w/7 whites listed in house. He is not on 1800,1810, or 1820 census' there but there are deed documents he is shown as executing in Orange Co. Va. in 1818...deeding land to what I believe is his perhaps unmarried daughters Jestin, Cicily and Susanna. I missed this for years because the spelling in these documents is "Collyear"..
I have a theory, completely without proof, that perhaps our Martin Sr. left Virginia around 1800 and married Mary Belle (Polly) Anderson b. 1784 Henry Co. Va. and had another family in Ky./Ark....Her husband, listed as Jackson Martin Collier b. Augusta Co Va circa 1760...died 1822-1824 in Clark Co. Ark.
It gets very interesting when you start looking at the timelines the various counties and states were created...VAGenWEB has great maps...Keep in mind as you search Casewell was born 1812 in Orange Co. Va. but died in Greene Co. Va. (estab.1838) and probably never left the immediate vicinity where he was born...
Hope some of this helps...I have lots of bits and pieces (not all where I am now) but will be glad to share in the future. Also would like downline on Amanda that you have...
Good luck, Tracy Collier Stephens

Hi Rachel,
I'm afraid I don't have much information on the Loarings on my tree, but here is what I do know...

Robert Loaring married Rebecca Collier Jerrard in 1824 in Dorset. They had 2 children that I know of - Rosalie Clemence (b1825) and Francis (b1827), both born in Devon.

That is really all I know at this point. If you think there might be a link then please let me know. I have more information on the Jerrard side of the family.

Regards,
Sarah

Jessie Robertson (13 April 1810-16 March 1881) believed to be the son of George Robertson (25 June 1765-17 Oct 1876) and Deborah Register Robertson (21 March 1791-22 March 1871).

Jessie married Margaret Collier (2 Dec 1809-1 June 1880) in Greene County TN. bond 11 Feb 1832. I have a copy of the bond)

Margaret Collier was the eldest child of John Collier, Jr. ( 1783? to 1827)and Rebecca Register. 9 Octover 1785-3 May 1868. Other children were Lydia Collier m. David Bright and Absolom Stonecypher; Martha Collier m. Alexander M. Hall; Deborah Collier m. Rev. John Nicholson; Thomas Collier m. John Collier (Rev. War, Guilford/Randolph County) and Margaret Regart.

Col. John Collier was born in 14 Dec, 1732 probably in Harrisburg (Paxtang) PA. He married a Margaret, some records say her last name was Regart, but no proof has been found. Col John moved to Guilford/Randolph County, NC, in 1772 to be with Dougan relatives. He moved to Greene County, TN in 1792 and died there in 1823. Margaret died there in 1824.

Col. John was the son of James Collier (1703-31 March 1788), a weaver/farmer from Donegal County, Ireland. James married Susannah Dougan (1707-9 Sept 1781) probably in PA. James and Susannah are buried in the Paxton Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Harrisburg, PA. Susannah Dougan was the daughter of a Thomas Dougan who also came to America and lived in PA.

Rebecca Register (9 Oct 1785-3 May 1868) was the daughter James and Deborah Chance Register. She was born in Delaware. Rebecca Register Collier married second, Israel Woolsdy. She is buried in Bethesda Cumberland Pres. Cemetery in Greene County, TN.

James Register was the son of George Francis Register and Margaret Bartlett who were merried in the Third Have Meeting House (Quaker) of Talbot Co., Mc. on 2 Oct. 1731. Rebecca was also the granddaughter of Richard and Martha Chance.

There are more Collier/Robertson/Register connections too.

I can prove everything here stated unless it says probably.

Colyer born April 1874, son of Nathaniel Colyer and Charlotte Eliza Hollen, married a Sadie. I have no other details on either of this men.

Have you been able to obtain a death certificate or burial record for your James?
I am not aware of any of the Massachusetts Colliers - so surnamed - who went to Maryland by 1800 or so, although it is possible that some of those "lost" to history did so. Some of the New Jersey branches did certainly go to South Carolina by about 1760, and some later to Georgia. Possibly some paused in maryland on the way south, but I don't have anything to say so.

The Doty family descended from Edward of the "Mayflower" has been quite extensively researched, and you should be able to find quite a bit of material on them. There were some connections of Dotys to Collier/Collyers in New Jersey.

Wade Collier
"Colliers of Massachusetts" Project

Perhaps this will help:

The following pages were taken verbatim from the book titled FRANCIS MORGAN, AN EARLY VIRGINIA BURGESS, and Some of His Descendants, compiled from the notes of Mr. William Owen Nixon Scott and from original sources, published by Braid & Hutton, Printers, Savannah, GA, March 1920.

"Capt. John Collier (father of Frances Collier, wife of Capt James Scott) was married three times. By his first wife, formerly Miss Ballard, he had no children; by his second wife, who before her marriage was Miss Gaines, he had only one child, John Collier, Jr.; by his third wife Nancy Eyres (or Eppes?) he had eight children, of whom Frances Collier was the youngest or next to the youngest, and as he died in 1735 she must have been born before that time."

I am wondering if your James or John may be the father of James Collier who was born circa 1837. He married Louisa Ann in 1870. She died 2/7/1891 in Philadelphia. Later, James emmigrated to South Africa where he died 10/2/1913. Does any of this tie in with your research? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

There is a John Collier in Virginia (Augusta) married to a Cecily Hall or so my research says and I am very inexperienced in this ancestry business....I do however know the Colliers who came to Missouri from Virginia...My personal knowledge goes only about five generations.

I live in Pennsylvania and would be fascinated to know the connection

Just learned that I am descended down the line from Capt. John Collier.....Sounds as though you know a great deal more than I do..I cannot imagine how I could help you but I can tell you a good deal about the past five generations as my Uncle Oscar Harrison Collier was a big part of my life from 1942 until his death.

This may help in research:

The following pages were taken verbatim from the book titled FRANCIS MORGAN, AN EARLY VIRGINIA BURGESS, and Some of His Descendants, compiled from the notes of Mr. William Owen Nixon Scott and from original sources, published by Braid & Hutton, Printers, Savannah, GA, March 1920:

The Collier family, although originally French, lived for many generations in Staffordshire, England, see the "Harlean Society's Publications" (1912), Vol. LXIII, page 53, (in the Congressional Library at Washington, D. C.). The ancestry of this family is given there, their Coat of Arms being identical with that of the Collier family in Virginia. In the Coat of Arms the fact that the base of the cross, upon the shield, is sharpened to a point, indicates that at least one ancestor of the Colliers was a Knight Templar, who carried the cross of Christ ready to plant in the Holy Land.

A very interesting history of the Collier family is given in a comparatively recent publication, Colonial Families of the Southern States, by Stella Pickett Hardy, (page 148), and much of this sketch is derived from that source.

Early Settlers on page 256 refers to the fact that during the Revolutionary War, "Sir George Collier, Rear Admiral of the British navy, was shelling the coast of Rhode Island, while his American cousins, the Colliers of Virginia, were shedding their blood in defense of the Colonies." Lossing's "Field Book of the Revolution" contains a full account of the activities of our English cousin, Sir George Collier, during the Revolution. See Vol. 1, pages 422, 743 and 786, Vo1. 2, pages 332 and 620.

But probably the most valuable data we have of the Collier family is found in Goode's Virginia Cousins on page 50 C.
John Collier (father of Frances Collier, wife of Capt. James Scott) was a Captain in the infantry of King and Queen county, Virginia, June 12th, 1702. See "Virginia Colonial Militia" by Crozier, page 97 (Crozier's authority being Hening's "Statutes").

These are the lines I am now researching as well. I have a fact from genealogies done years ago that Dowty (Doty, Douty) Collier of Somerset and Worcestor Co., MD married Priscila Nicholson (1716-1775), who were the parents of Elizabeth Collier (1750-1802) of Worcestor Co., MD, who would be my ancestor if any of these facts are correct. I'd like to correspond with Sylvia Opiela and Edith Gomez, if you're still there, about these families. I haven't sorted out much yet, but the names sent me on a chase for the pieces of this puzzle. That you say Richard Collier III married Ann Douty immediately caught my attention. I hope to hear from you. Linda Willis

Greetings! I am Stephan Jones of Sammamish, WA. My maternal grandmother, Grace Collier, from Seligman, Mo. (Butler Hollow) was a granddaughter of "Captain" Charles Collier, who reportedly fought in both the Mexican and Civil Wars. I would be most interested in learning what you know of our ancestor. sjones082@yahoo.com
