1940 Census

Until there is an index, many of us are searching through numerous pages in hopes of finding our ancestors/relatives. I mainly search Vigo County, IN, and Clark County, IL, and when I find the name ON THIS BOARD (I am posting this same message on my other family boards), I will try to post the Enumeration District and page number for THIS name. I hope this helps and I would really appreciate it if you all could do the same. I suggest we have as the subject line "1940 Census" and the name of the individual. As an example, after I post this I will post "1940 Census Frank Collins, Vigo, IN." And then, in the message, I will post "Indiana, Vigo, West Terre Haute, 84-79, Page 21."

Only one instance of the collings spelling. It is the earliest doc. Signed by henry after that everyone spelled it collins. Need help determining if there are more proofs of him under collings has anyone else had this problem? His wife was rachel need proof of his parents his marriage her maiden name taxes land ownership church membership any other ideas suggested would help i dont know pa search techniques

Not sure if this is relevant but my grandfathers name was richard (dick) edmonds who was born on march 20th 1925 and married my grandmother mary ann edmonds. Richard's father was named Claude Edmonds and Married a woman named Bessie who was then re-married to a man named george dawson? I am looking for any further information as well...

Looking for information on Loyalist Benjamin Collings, married Ann Gibson, came to New Brunswick in 1783 after the Revolutionary War. I can't seem to find them after they docked in Saint John, NB. They were given a land grant in Meductic, NB but haven't any evidence they went there. I am up against a brick wall.

George W A Collings was my Grandfather and was married to Julia Etta Barnett born Dec 1 1863 in Mercer County, Missouri. Daughter of Enos Barnett and Eliza Broyles.The Broyles side carries eventually down to Lord Cecil Calvert.

For anyone searching ANYONE, on any forum, PLEASE!! include LOCATION -- birth, residence, and/or death! Those of us who are stuck in our own research might be glad to help WITH A LITTLE MORE INFO. There are soooo many common names, like "Thomas Collins, Thomas Garner, William ____" or whatever, that they could be ANYWHERE, like the US or the UK or Australia or Canada and/or anywhere within any country (the STATE, PROVINCE, YADA is very important). If you could provide what ALL you know, like locations, parents, siblings, place of marriage, ANYTHING, it would help mucho for those of us who would like to help.

I am also a Collins whose grandfather dropped the 'G' (Illinois and Indiana). Were Albert and George originally in the US and did they both end up in Canada (you have George as RCAF)? Were they born in the US, if so where??? Are you a subscriber to Ancestry? if not, I will copy any records I find for you (I am stuck in my own research ;<). FYI, my Collings were German-born, who knew!

Hi Lynn, thanx for your reply! I have tried collins as well, thats what my last name is as my grandfather dropped the 'G'. The birthdates I have are listed for Albert and George, I dont know the day and month for George, though I know he died June 7th, 1944 during the capture of pegasus bridge. I got his spo name off the RCAF Military info. Thats all I can find so far! Any help would be appreciated! They had siblings Nora (b. 1900) Edith (b.1905) Robert (b.1908) Charles (b.1911) and John (b. 1918) these I know their info, its only George's family and Albert that I cant locate!

Where born, where died, where was George married to Phyllis Muriel? Do you have any locational info? Have you tried Collins rather than Collings (most of the Collings went to the simpler Collins)? Glad to help if I can with a little more info.

I am looking for info on Albert Collings. Born Feb 9 1913, records show he was shipped to Canada as a teen though following that info, it is the wrong Albert. Also his brother George Collings, born 1915 - died at war 1944, had a wife Phyllis Muriel Collings. Trying to find contact info on their family as well.

Hi there,
Was your Nicholas Collings born in 1878 Plymouth and lived at St. Blazey, Cornwall?? Middle name George?? Occupation a Mason?
If so I have looked up the 1901 census and found his mother as Peterinl and siblings Mary, Bertie, Mabel and nephew Albert.
Father is William in the 1891 census. I would advise you to get Nicholas's death certificate which would have his parents names and should even have his mothers maiden name. Once you have this you will be set to explore your origins.

Henry Collins was born abt 1816 in England and according to family died abt 1862 in Desronto, Hastings Cty. His wife Corabina B. Lovie was born 19 Dec 1829 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died 26 May 1907 in Storrington Twp and buried at Latimer cemetery. By virtue of her second marriage to William Baker her parents were George Levie and Cora B. Picken

My husband is descended from an Albert Edward Collings who died suddenly in 1916 (heart attack) & was an Engineer Captain in the Royal Navy.
I don't however know if this is the same person you were looking for.

You might try requesting the marriage record of Drucilla/Drusilla Collings/Collins and Joseph Milstead/Milsted from Scott County, Indiana. The "Indiana State Library Genealogy Database: Marriages through 1850" has their marriage as 11-21-1820, but the "Indiana Marriage Collection, 1800-1941" has it as 12-21-1820. Some counties have information on parents in their record/certificates.

My g4 grandfather was William Elston Collings' brother Thomas. My question was about Thomas' grandson, William Franklin Collings, my great great grandfather (many generations after Pigeon Roost). The children of William Edward Collings might never have lived in Illinois, but of course subsequent generations did.

I believe there are two different William Collings.
William Elston Collings b c1758 d 1828 in Scott Co IN. He is buried in Pigeon Roost Scott Co IN. He was leader of the Pigeon Roost Settlement. He married Phobe Hoagland? problably PA. That generation of Collings were never in Illinois. Some may have been in Clark Co Indiana.

William Collings b 1828 -- need death info

Anyone have any idea why many trees list William Collings death as "8 May 1913 - Groveland, Lake, Florida, USA"? He lived all his life in Indiana and just across the border in Clark County, Illinois. He is in the 1910 Census in Terre Haute, IN, living with his youngest son John. Why at age 82+ would William be traveling to, and dieing in, Florida? His last wife, Catherine Sherman Frantz Collings, is buried at Dunlap Cemetery, Dennison, IL, along with William's son Thomas (my great grandfather).
Any help greatly appreciated.

Thankyou for your reply.
My Robert Collings(Collins) was born in 1793 and died 1875.
He is buried at the St Peters Churchyard at Woodacott near Thornbury, along with his wife Susanna (Surname Lewis or Short? not positive on this). I know they are buried there and the dates are correct because we have a photo of their gravestone.
I do not connect with a Joseph Collings as far as I know. I do not know where Chudleigh is in relation to Thornbury either, I live in Australia.
In the earlier records the surname is actually Collins not Collings as we know. Records differ. On Roberts Gravestone it is spelt Collings. I hope this answers any questions. Feel free to contact me further.

I have a brick wall I desperately need to break through. My mother's 100th birthday is coming up, and I want to print her a photo family tree as a gift. But I'm stuck at her great grandmother, Hannah E Collings (1796-1885) who was married 22 Jan 1818 in Gloucester County, New Jersey, to John Kebel Cowperthwaite.

Her mother is Hannah Eastlack, but I have no idea who her father is.

Any clues?

Do you have a Mary J. Collings (1878-) in your family tree? She was the daughter of Thomas Collings (c. 1833-) of Jersey and Mary Daniels (1835-1910). They were married (1868) in Liverpool.

Mary J. is my great-grandmother.

James Grant Collings is my great grandmother's brother. She is Mary Myrtle Collings that married Joseph Benjamin Lindsey. Both were the children of Nathan David Collings and Elizabeth Powell Kinkenon.

You list the names but not the dates of birth. If the dates are before 1900 which I guess from what you have told us they may be you can probably find more about the family from the census data on this website. You may also come across user submitted trees matching the names.

Lydia COLLINGS or COLLINS m. Daniel STUTSMAN in Scott County, IN

I am looking for information about Lydia COLLINS/COLLINGS who married Daniel STUTSMAN 19 Jun 1826 in Scott County, Indiana. Daniel was recently widowed and it is possible that COLLINS/COLLINGS was Lydia’s married name if by chance she was a recent widower. The Stutsmans would have lived near or known the Collins/Collings family from the time Indiana was still a territory and the Clark County/Scott County region was called Clark’s Grant.

The 1930 Federal Census puts Daniel and family in Clark County, Indiana and puts Lydia’s birth between c. 1800-1810. By the 1940 Federal Census, they are in Van Buren County, Iowa Territory where Daniel supposedly dies around 1843.

There is a marriage record in early Lee County (next door to Van Buren county) of a Mrs. Lydia STUTESMAN to Benjamin JEFFERS 22 Jun 1843. Benjamin was born Abt. 1788 in Portland, West Virginia and died about 1857 in Franklin, Lee County, Iowa.

A Page County, IA history book has this to say: “In 1839 Mr. Jeffers removed to Iowa and settled on a farm of raw prairie. His wife died in 1843, and he married for his second wife Lydia Stutman; three children were born of this union: Clara J., Rachel and Daniel, making seventeen children of whom Benjamin Jeffers was the father.”

The 1850 Federal Census puts the JEFFERS family in Lee County, listing both parents as age 63. This cannot be correct because Lydia has just had three small children, two of which are listed in the census.

I am looking for Lydia COLLINS/COLLINGS origins.
I am looking for children Lydia may have had by Daniel STUTSMAN.
I am looking for death dates and burial places for Lydia, Daniel and Benjamin.
Can anyone confirm that Lydia COLLINS/COLLINGS, wife of Daniel STUTSMAN is the Mrs. Lydia STUTESMAN who married Benjamin JEFFERS.

I have more information on the STUTSMAN/STOOTSMAN/STUTESMAN/STUTZMAN line to share.

Family Bible found

I'm not sure where to start but thought this might be a good place. I have a family Bible, not mine, that I just found. I have collected old Bible throughout the years and have found one that has a family's information. This Bible has a name inside dated Dec. 26, 1895. It is not in the best of condition but still has a lot of valuable information for one family. I am hoping to be able to locate this family so that I could get this very precious treasure into their hands,

The name on the inside is Mallie Williams. The page is torn but the best that I can read the address is: 307 Sharer Street, San Antonio,.... ..

There is a short note inside to Charly Collins in San Francisco, dated July 1919 from: Mr. E. Williams, Kenneth, CA

Richard C. Collings - obituary

Richard C. Collings, 77, of Oxford Street, Sandwich west Township, died Sunday at Grace Hospital after a brief illness. Born in England, Mr. Collings had lived in Windsor for five years, coming from Essex. He attended the Anglican Church. His wife, Lila Elizabeth, died in 1959. Survivors include two sons, Sidney, of Colchester; Edwin, at home; two daughters, Miss Elizabeth of Detroit; Mrs. Michael (Violet) Straks, of Allen Park, Michigan; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 2:15 pm. at the Anderson Funeral Home, 895 Ouellette Avenue, Rev. Errol J. Shilliday officiating. Burial will be at Victoria Memorial Cemetery. (Windsor Star, Monday, February 6, 1961) [Windsor, Ontario, Canada]
