Wilkins Collum

I have searched for over ten years for the final resting place (plus and actual death date) for Wilkins Collum that was married to Millia Boothe and living in Kemper and Lauderdale Counties of Mississippi between 1830 and the late 1850's. I came across an interesting bit of info this week that really has me wondering! In the back of 'Gardner's New Orleans Directory for 1861' there is a 'Planters Directory containing the names of the cotton and sugar planters in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Texas' that lists Wilkin Collum as a cotton planter in Sookalena (Suqualena), Lauderdale County, Mississippi. It has been assumed by many of us that he died in the late 1850's because he was not on the 1860 Federal Census and other data. I then thought this might be Wilkins S Collum, the son of Willis Collum and Abigail Etheridge, but he was innumerated on the 1860 Winn Parish, Louisiana, Federal Census.

Any thoughts on this will be greatly appreciated!!

Happy Hunting,
Lisa

The source is from a cousin of my Dad's but is my age. She was a very late in life child. She has done lots of Collum research (her mom was a Collum) and actually has another picture of them so knew that was them when she saw mine. I have no idea where the picture came from. It was in a closet at my Mothers house when I packed them up to move them to Big Spring with us. That was in 2008 and she had had it for years. I think it is a pencil or charcoal drawing. It's about 12x17. It is on a kind of canvas type board and is broken from top to bottom on the right side but does not go into the picture. I hope to find someone who can restore it.

My line goes:
William Collum - 1745
Uriah Collum - 1758
Vincent E. Collum - 1776
Clayton Collum - 1822
Charles Simpson Collum - 1858
Nunon Franklin Collum - 1894
Cecil Collum - 1918 - My dad

How does your source know what they look like?

Do you have any idea where the photo came from? I have found a picture in my Father's belongins and we have traced it to be Clayton Collum and Margaret Martis Collum. I have spent lots of time trying to tie all of these Collum's together. Clayton would have been my dad's gggrandfather. Would love to hear from you if you're still looking. I would let you on my family tree to see the picture if you want. Thanks, Judy

That puts you either Woodard, Harvey or Taylor's daughter..??? Bill never married and I think that was all the boys that Manual Thomas and Jerisha had. I would love for you to share any findings.
Hello,

I just want to say hello and wish you good luck in your search.

My name is Carol Ann Collom Hildenbrand and I am surprised of so many different spelling of the name and how many there are in both spellings. Some of my ancestores of Collom were mispelled. My e mail frose@ptd.net but ancestry says my old one frose28.

Check out history of family surnames or type in name and see what it may say. It helps but not all of the time.

I know of a John Collom in 1801 died 1838 lived in Red River Texas died 1838 married a Cynthia Lovel. This was researched by my late sister and is confirmed on the internet under History of Collom Family in Bowie County.

My husband & I have been given some of his family info. The great grandfather of his great aunt, Florence Mae [Billie} Bishop {married name Mrs. John Salyer} is listed as Phllip Pinckney Collum. Her grandmother is listed as Martha Collum Barrett and her grandmother as Mary Miranda {or Marenda} Collum. Mary's maiden name was Skelton. Aunt Billie was the daughter of George Washington Bishop and Ellen Modenia Barrett born in Fannin County, Texas, April 3, 1898. Billie lived in Dallas much of her life and was a favorite relative of ours until her death in Ft. Worth in 1982. We have a wonderful letter to her by her cousin, George W. Collum written in 1925 from Booneville, Mississippi. We would love to learn much more! Appreciate corresponding with you or others.

Thanks for the reply. I assume that you mean the year was 1850. Do you know if any members of this family came to Canada? Some of the names in the family are John, Thomas, Hugh, William - not sure if these are named after ancestors, but could be. Family lore also says that John Collum was a judge in Enniskillen. I have found where land was donated in Enniskillen, by John Collum, for a church to be built. I cannot, however, make my links.

I have been trying to research my Collum ancestors for years and cannot make headway. Family stories say that JOhn Collum came to Canada from Fermanagh, Ireland - date unknown. He is found in the 1841 Ontario, Canada census; married to Elizabeth Maguire. Other Collums are found in Sarnia, Ontario. Could they be the same family? Any help appreciated. Some of this Collum family settled in Manitoba in the late 1800's.

Dear William,

I am related to the Collums from Union County, South Carolina, by Clayton Collum, who I believe is the brother of Phillip Pinckney. Clayton is the father of Sarah Frances Collum who married James Henry Nance. I descended from their daughter, Mary Alice Nance, her son carried her maiden name, and his name was Malcolm Ernest Nance. Malcolm is my grandfather by his child, William Hugh Nance, Sr.

When I was a child, my grandfather Malcolm was a dairy foreman on a farm in the rural area called Delta near Carlisle, South Carolina. The farm was quite mechanized as I remember going to watch the cows being milked by electric milkers. I have a photo taken of my brother and I on the farm right after a hailstorm. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe Malcolm worked for a Jeter family and/or they owned the farm. Are you possibly related to that Jeter?

Is this possibly how my grandfather came to work for the Jeters thru his ancestral relationship with the Collums or is this just coincidence of both families residing in Union County?

I have done some research on the Collums and know that Clayton eventually left Union County, SC, and shows up on the census in Itawamba Co. MS. Sarah Frances is Clayton and Margaret's oldest child.

If you want to correspond about these family connections, please get in touch with me thru Ancestry.

Collum, Maguire, Overend

William Henry Collum was born Feb 26, 1869 in Hollen, Ontario (Wellington County). His siblings were Ella (1865) Parks, David (1867), Sarah (1870) Haslam, James (1871-1872), Mary (1875) Moore, Emma (1877) Galloway and Inez(1879) Hughes. His mother was Elizabeth Maguire, born in May 19, 1837 in Kingston, ON. His father was John Henry Collum born Mar 12, 1809 presumably in Enniskillen, Ireland.
John Henry Collum was, I believe, married prior to this to Moriah (Maria) Overend, about 1841, in Wellington County, ON. Their children were: Ann Jane 1842 (John Keliall); Margaret 1843; Rachel 1849 (Thomas Sutliff); Isabella (1849 twin); John 1850 (Margaret).
Any info or help with this family appreciated. I have hit a brick wall. Thanks, Maxine.

Re: William Collum born c1840

Oh its been such a long time....Im sure you found by now that William Collum, father of William Monroe, husband of Ida McLeod, was not William after all...His name was Clark (Some are saying David Clark Collum, but Ive yet to see) He married Margaret Standifer a year or so after he returned from the war, with his brother Virgil, who incidently married Parmelia Standifer. The last battle they were in was in New York, and for some strange reason, I think Clark, (William if you must) may have deserted. I have yet to find evidense of this, but I do have a hunch. It happened all the time, people would leave, and Just change part of their name...Some would give a phoney name to begin with. Anyhow...look it up...Its pretty clear and direct line. Margaret first Married Henry Story, and he perhaps died in the war, she then married none other than Clark Collum. Clark's parents were Westly Collum and Elizabeth Cook. He had 5 siblings. Virgil (who fought with him same company) and Elk was a younger brother whom when you find him in the 1870 census...Look at the neighbor next door...Elk lived with and worked for William (Clark's) neighbor. Hope this helps Eileen...perhaps you already know all of this by now...If I remember correct...your father is Uncle Bus's son...er...right? G. Pettijohn
