My great grandmother's maiden name was Collura, first name Rose. She originally came to the US in the turn of the century. I think she was in Louisiana to start but ended up in coal country, New Columbus (Nesquehoning, PA). She was married twice. Once to a Canzonari and secondly to a George Raguso (my great grandfather). I know that I have many relatives (cousins) that I have never met both in Brooklyn and in Louisiana?

I will ask my grandmother about how many brothers and sisters Rose had.

Rose had a couple children from her first marriage, they are long dead. She had 2 children from her marriage to George, my late Uncle Jasper, and my grandmother Angilena.

Hopefully this is helpful.

Thanks

Paul Clark
Another name in common; that's amazing! To my knowledge
the Colluras were one of few Aragona families in Tampa.
Names like Buscemi and Rizzo, also common in Aragona, are
here but I don't know any personally. Most Tampa families
trace their roots to Santo Stefano Quisquina, Alessandria
Della Rocca and other towns north of Aragona. My Mom's
paternal GPs were from SSQ. Sorry, no aragona club here...

I will look into Farruggia's article soon and try to
upload that recording ASAP. Thanks again.

You mention "Barba" surname. In our family album with old pictures from Aragona is a mystery picture of a young lady fashionably dressed from c.1920. The back is signed to my G-GM in Italian "your niece, Antonietta Barba". This is another surname that touches both of our families.

The first husband of my step G-GM was Luigi Farruggia. Her name was Teresa Lucchese-Calleja both were born in Aragona. She was a widow when she remarried my G-GF Paolo Seminerio in 1900. He was a widower due to the death of his first wife Teresa Collura. Farruggia's are listed in my grandfather's wake registry of 1960. We think these were my step G-GM's family with first husband Luigi Farruggia. They had immigrated to Chicago sometime between 1910 and 1930. I am not in contact with any Farruggia's here in Chicago.

My grandfather had relatives in Boston. On first trips to the US pre WWI he stayed in Boston and was sponsored by his uncle Salvatore Collura who lived there. We are not in contact with any Boston Collura's so I do not know a Sally Collura. I do know that my grandfather's cousin Monsignor Calogero Collura stayed with Collura relatives in Boston before coming to visit us in Chicago (c.1974).

In 2001 a book was published called "Voices of America, Italians in Chicago". A chapter in the book was written by a Joseph Farruggia about the Chicago South Side Aragona Society. You can Google Joseph Farruggia Aragona and see this book chapter on-line with photos of the Aragona Club.

You ask about the Aragona Club, I know mostly stories from my older aunts and uncles. For my grandparents the Chicago society was at the center of their social life. I believe there were clubs in New York/Brooklyn; Boston/Waltham, Mass; Rockford,IL and a large enough Aragonese population in Chicago to support a North Side Aragona Club and a South Side Aragona Club. The Chicago Clubs were founded as Mutual Aid Societies in 1918. Both of these clubs were disbanded by around 1990. The Chicago clubs were dedicated to the Sacred Heart. I still have my grandparents original membership book that list all the founding members in Chicago, their Aragona society badges, dues book and some photos of the banner for the annual north side feast of the Sacred Heart celebrated at Saint Philip Benizi Church in Chicago.

That would be great if you were able upload your recording and share it. I am very strong interest in the stories of Aragonese immigration to the USA.

Seminerio and Collura are highly recurring names in Aragona that go way back in history. So it is not surprising that there are multiple lines. Besides the above mentioned cities I have learned of Aragonesi immigration to Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New Hampshire etc. But, I did not realize that Aragonesi went to Tampa. I have an immigration history book that was given to me on Ybor City. I do not remember any mention of immigration from Aragona. Were there many other Aragonese families in Tampa area besides yours? Was there an Aragona Club in Tampa?

I hope this info is of interest to you....

My GGF's parents were Stefano Collura & Giuseppa Barba.
They immigrated in 1912, but died soon after (he in 1918
and she in 1919). My GGM's father was also named Stefano,
but records show he died before my GGM started having
children. I have not come across my GGM's birth record yet.

I converted the recording to CD-R and hope to convert to
MP3, that way, I can upload and share it with you.

Are you familiar with any Farruggias? A man in California
(formerly Chicago) wrote years back saying he met my
G-Uncle and Uncle there in the "Windy City". Also,
what do you know about the Aragona Club? A Sally Collura
in Boston, whose family is also from Aragona, told me her
parents went there on a visit. So far, her line hasn't
matched mine. Didn't realize there were so many Collura
lines in Aragona! Thanks again.

Regarding the "musical" Alongi's, yes there was also a Michelangelo Alongi. Your recording sounds like a treasure of "Aragonese-American" culture. It sounds like we are talking about the same Alongi family in Chicago and our grandparents or great grandparents may have had these Alongi's in common as relatives. I would guess that at some point our family trees probably connect.

Do you know your G-GM Giovanna Seminerio mother's maiden name? Or your G-GF Collura mother's maiden name? I have continuous info on my direct Seminerio line in Aragona going back to Didaco Seminerio being born in 1728 in Aragona.

His
brother, my G-GF, Francesco, was married to a Seminerio,
Giovanna. John's wife was Josie (Giuseppa, I don't re-
member her last name). They had a son Steve, who was
a photographer. Also, my GF's brother, Paolo, visited
with his nephew, my uncle, around 1950. Was Michael also
called Michelangelo? My G-Uncle made a recording (he on
mandolin, his nephew on guitar) partially recorded at the
home of Michelangelo Alongi, who he mentions on the record.

As to relatives in Aragona, I met the widow of one of my
GF's nephews, son of his older sister, on my visit in 1992.
As well, her daughter, son and grandson. No mention was
made of the Monsignor.

This is all very interesting and I thank you for replying.
Keep me posted!!!

Yes the Chicago Alongi's were musicians. My GF's grandmother was Crocefissa Alongi born in Aragona. Per my older relatives, the Chicago musicians you mentioned were my GF's cousins. My mother still has a wedding congratulations note he sent them on their band's stationery headed "Michael Alongi, King of Strings, and his Harmonians" from circa 1950. There was also a Vincenzo Alongi. The Alongi's also were known for carrying the statue of Saint Paolo in the Easter "L'Incontro" procession in Aragona.
You mention your grandmother's uncle in Chicago. Were they Seminerio's? Are the Alongi's you were referencing your relatives also? Were any of your Collura lines related to Monsignor Calogero Collura who lived a very long, distinguished life and died in Aragona in the 1980's. There may be a family tree tie here with Seminerio, Collura or Alongi.
My paternal grandparents were born in Aragona. Both were
Colluras, but different lines. My GF's mother was a
Mirasola and my GM's mother was a Seminerio. My GF
immigrated through NY from Palermo and came to Tampa, FL,
where he lived till death. My grandmother left from
Naples to NY to Marion, IL, her family moved to
Fla. after WWI. Both worked in Tampa's cigar industry,
though my GF later opened a grocery store. My GM has
relatives in Chicago (her uncle moved there). Did
your Alongis play music? My great-uncle knew some there.

My great-grandmother was Teresa Collura born in Aragona, province of Agrigento, in 1866. She was maried to Paolo Seminerio also born in Aragona but in 1859. Their son, My grandfather Antonino Seminerio immigrated to the USA around 1924 settling in Chicago. I have traced my Collura line in Aragona back to Pietro Collura who was born in 1768. Other family names found in this Collura line are Calvagna, Alongi, and D'Argento all from Aragona. The Calvagna's in this line were from Nicolosi (province of Catania).

Anyone have info or think they have ties to this line?

Thank you! However, my Collura's were all from Aragona,
a short distance north (12km+ or -)from Agrigento.
I visited the birthplace and museum of Nobel prize-
winning playwright Luigi Pirandello at Porto Empedocle
when I went in 1992. It's a beautiful area.

Also, I have not yet come across any Marullo's in my tree.
But who knows...? Thanks again!!!
