Colman in Louisiana (Native American, African American) Martha Colman

My great grandfather was Noah Boykins, born in Arkansas anywhere from 1872 to 1884. I believe his father was Willis Boykins and his mother was Martha Colman. Noah's parents may have been of mixed decent (sharing white, black and Indian genes). They were born in Louisiana (LA), but moved to Arkansas at some point. I’m not sure why though.
Noah Boykins married Atlanta Talton in 1920 and had 8 children- 2 daughters and 6 sons, one of which was my grandfather John Henry Boykins, also born in Arkansas, but passed away here in Arizona in 1994 at age 70.
Records indicate that Noah Boykins passed away in 1946 at the age of 74 in Arkansas. But various census records have add’l dates and odd spellings of the last name, ie: (Boyrins, Boykus).

I am interested in finding information on Willis & Martha, the parents of Noah Boykins. Also interested in knowing if Willis & Martha had siblings…if so, who are they, where did they live…who are their descendents?

Ultimately, if anyone is familiar with these names, please contact me here or via my email: jerswifey@gmail.com

With thanks,
Chasity
Geworge Colman married Ann Leach 8 May 1834 at Wisbech St Peters Church. Living at Elm in 1841 with a child named John Leach Colman aged (apparently) about 6. Strangely Ann Leach had an illegitimate child named John (from whom I am descended) although the father was named on the baptism certificate as John Orfield. My John should have been about 12 in 1841 census not 6. There is no trace of a John Colman born to George and Ann. All very strange.

Hi Steve,

Thanks very much for your reply.

I had seen that Alexander Colman death in 1847 and knew his age from his burial. I assumed from the area he is probably a relative but had never got the death certificate. You did apply to it I see - I would love a copy if possible.

I know more about the family since my earlier post and have now found that marriage of Alexander and Ann Habben.

The story goes that the Colmans came over to England from Germany (apparently close to the Danish boarder) in the reign of George I. I however wondered if down the line things had got a bit confused and it was in fact the German sounding Habbens who came over then.

I had never found this elder Alexander in the 1841 census so am very grateful to you for this.

There was a whole string of mental health issues and alcoholism in the Colman families historically and to modern times. It is quite interesting.

I would love to know where you fit in. Please message me off list and we can talk more - my direct email is jonwicken@yahoo.co.uk.

Kind regards,
Jon
Alexander Colman (born 1802)- parents could be Alexander Colman who died Aged 96 in 1847. He died at 272 Albany Road - present at the death was A Colman (born 1802?). Albany Road is the address where A Colman (born 1802) and Ann (Habben) Colman are shown as living in the 1841 census.
Interestingly in the 1841 census A Colman (who died in 1847 is shown as not being born in this county with F in the born in country column. Could he be the first Colman in the UK? His wife is Hannah who died in 1844.

The Alexander Colman who married Florence Marshall bigamously in 1886 remarried Florence again in 1914 at the Wandsworth Register Office.

I would be interested in any other information you have on the Colman / Bullock / Marshall families.

Kind regards.

I am looking for any information about my greatgrandmother Elizabeth Coleman. I don't know where she was born but she gave birth to my grandmother Catherine Dorney in February 1902 in County Cork, Ireland. Catherine may have had a sister Sarah. I now this because my older sister remembers as a child that there was an 'Aunt Sarah/Sally'. Catherine came to the US as a young woman and met my grandfather Eliseo Yanez (he hailed from Cuba). They had 3 daughters: Sarah, nicknamed Sally (my mother), Elizabeth (Betty) and Elsie. Any information regarding Elizabeth Coleman and who her husband was would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

I was wondering if there might be a connection between your branch and mine. Mine is also a Charles Colman and he married a Hannah Dial. His parentage is rather confusing. His father's name is George and Charles was supposedly born in Norfolk, yet it is difficult to find him anywhere before he got married in 1880. If you maybe have some infor that could solve this puzzle I would be very greatful. thank you in advance

Lost Colony DNA Project and Symposium

I would like to forward this to the list. The Colman surname can be found on the Colonist roster of the Lost Colony

Kim Coleman
Admin Coleman DNA Project
www.colemanfamilies.org

Is your family part of the Roanoke Lost Colony? It could be! My name is Roberta Estes and I’m the Director for DNA Research for the Lost Colony Center for Science and Research. (www.lost-colony.com) Our goal is to discover the fate of the Roanoke Lost Colonists.

For those of you who don’t know about the mystery of the Lost Colony, here’s a primer. In 1587, Sir Walter Raleigh financed a venture in which 116 men, women and children were planning to establish the first permanent colony in the New World. Their goal was to raise tobacco and other supplies that colonists were unable to obtain in England, and to search for precious minerals, like gold.

In the fall of 1587, the colonists finally arrived on Roanoke Island in present day North Carolina, after a very difficult journey in which their food supplies were ruined. They sent John White, whom they had elected governor, back to England to obtain food and supplies and expected his return in the spring of 1588. However, the Spanish attached England and England, having no Navy, impressed all of her fishing vessels and private merchant ships into Naval service. Finally, in 1590, three years after leaving the colonists which included his daughter, son-in-law and infant granddaughter, he returned to Roanoke Island to find it deserted, but not destroyed. It appeared as if the colonists had simply moved. A single word, a clue, Croatan, was carved on a tree. The Croatan were the friendly Indians living nearby. Before John’s departure, he had instructed the colonists to carve crosses if they had to leave in distress. There were no crosses.

John White would spend the rest of his life searching for the Lost Colonists. Many hints and clues indicate that at least some of the Colonists survived and were assimilated into the native tribes. The question is, did they, and if so, who are they today?

In 1993, the original site of the Croatan village was located. Subsequent archaeological and genealogical research suggests that the colonists did survive, and that when the land was granted to settlers, it was granted to some of those survivors who were by that time considered to be Indians. With recent advances in DNA for genealogy, we finally have, today, the ability to solve the mystery. We have created a plan that combines history, genealogy and DNA to solve the mystery. However, we can’t do this alone. We need the help of the families who have been identified as “families of interest”, being either roster members of the Lost Colony of those who obtained land grants on the original Croatan village site. Many of those names are the same.

In order to educate people and work closely with people who are interested, we are sponsoring the Lost Colony Symposium for DNA and Recent Research Sept. 7-9, 2007 at the Lost Colony Center in Williamston, NC. The symposium will be held between the Center and the Holiday Inn, as noted on the flyer at http://www.lost-colony.com/DNAsymflyer.html.

Given that your surname is one of those on our “Names of Interest” list, I hope that people on the list will join with us in our research. I am hoping from this mailing, aside from encouraging people to attend the Symposium, to achieve the following:

1. To identify a primary research person or persons for your particular surname who would serve as a contact/coordinator for future postings, requests and research.

2. To identify a family archival website(s) if one exists.
3. To identify if there are any families of that surname that are from NC (or early coastal SC or VA), have oral histories of Indian or "mixed" heritage, are involved with any of the tri-racial isolate groups (Melungeons, Red Bones, etc.) and/or have any oral history of the Lost Colonies.

4. To determine if the family group is involved already with DNA testing, and if so, who coordinates that effort.
5. To determine if there is any research occurring or that has occurred for your surname in Great Britain, and if not, if anyone is interested in pursuing that avenue.

To become involved with the Lost Colony project, or to support the project, please attend our Symposium. Our project plan will be announced at the Symposium, and we have a long list of wonderfully educational speakers. Bring your pedigree charts and your genealogy as the right people will be present to help you with your testing plan.

If you can’t attend the conference, you can still join the project. Information will be posted shortly about how to do that on the Lost Colony website. We are in the process of setting us a private newsgroup for project members only which will also be available after the symposium. Furthermore a blog is being created and blog location info will be posted on the Lost Colony website as well.

If you are interested in this project or can be of help in any way, please contact me at restes@comcast.net.
My ggggrandfather was William COLMAN [b. 1797] from Smallburgh, Norfolk, England and he married Mary SPRUCE [b. 1798] in 1821.

They had the following kids - all born in Smallburgh [from parish records]:

1822 COLMAN Amy
1824 COLMAN Marianne
1827 COLMAN William [1827-1888]
1829 COLMAN John
1831 COLMAN Robert
1833 COLMAN Rebecca
1835 COLMAN Charlotte
1838 COLMAN George
1841 COLMAN Harriet

William COLMAN [1827-1888] is my gggrandfather. He moved to, I believe, Canada then to Orleans Co, New York. He married a Mary DILL [DELL] from Glasgow, Scotland, though I can find no record of her birth or their marriage in parish records. They may have married in Canada or NY.

William [1827] seemed to have added an "e" in his name when he went to America. I don't know if that's common? My relatives all spell their name COLEMAN.

Do any of these names ring a bell for anybody? I would love to hear from relatives!

~ Casey
Hi!

Quick update... the church did NOT burn down but was torn down eventually. A new church had been built on Old Rock Hill Road. The painting was removed and was stored in the "basement" crawl space, on a dirt area. For MANY years, it was forgotten about. When it was "discovered", it was rehung in the back of the current church. I live in Mexico but am currently in Wallingford, where I grew up. I'll try to post more information later, as my mother still attends the church, (and so does my family when we are here). I am certain the current pastor, Rev. Karen Cook, would be more than happy to update you further.

Good Afternoon Margaret

The painting may be one by my Great Grandfather Paul Saint John Colman. If it is it would date from the early 1900s. I will send more from home this weekend.

Hi!

I just received the newsletter from the First United Methodist Church in Wallingford, CT and there is a discussion of one of hte painting of Rev. Colman that is located in that church. I am VERY interested in learning more about this gentleman as I grew up in that church and am intrigued by the painting and would love to learn more about its history and the history of Rev. Colman.

The surnames Coleman, Grow,McCollum,Porter, and Schmidt are among the surnames of a Confederate colony that existed in Spanish Honduras following the Civil War.
This may just be a coincidence? More can be found about this colony called Medina at:
http://www.southerntradewind.net/confederado.html
