This is a shot in the dark but we also have a ancestor named Jose Maria Colon but the only difference is his mother might be Ana Moliano (hope I'm spelling it right)from Spain. Can you tell me where in Spain Jose is from? Did you have a Christibol in the family?

My father's name was Solomon Colon and my mother's name was Esther Vasques. I am searching for any information related to my ancestors as I have lost touch with my extended family.

Thank you so much.

Thank you for your interest. I have sent a form to social security with a check and not heard from them two months later. I don't know if I told you that he had other children with other ladies he lived with for a while. He had a daughter named Elsie . she had a son named Russell. Alberto also had a son named Johnny from one woman. They would be around 50 years old mabe a little more. I have started my genealogy for my families under Colon Cordero family on ancestry.com. . Keep in touch if you find some thing else. ( Alberto lived in long island city in the late 1960. He lived with another women and had kids).

Most Colon in Puerto Rico are cousins, one way or the other. I'm interested in helping you find your roots, because then we would be long lost cousins. I found one Felix Colon living in Aibonito in 1910.

If you don't have a death certificate for Alberto Colon, you might want one as it may have more info that the marriage certificate. I am in the NYC area and have dealt with the city to try to order a certificate. IT IS HORRIBLE. Unless you order it online, and it costs a few bucks more. Going in person to the Dept of Health at Lafayette and Chambers is a waste of a whole day unless you arrive precisely at 8 a.m.

Hi
My mother used to say he was from somewhere around Abonito. So that could be Brranquitas and the area. I never met him. I finally got their marriage certificate from New York. All it says is his name Alberto Colon his mother's name Rose Negron and father Felix Colon. Their first names could of been cut short. Like my name is Rosalie and I am called Rose. Their place of birth says Puerto Rico and no town. It has his birthday as 4/9/1918.
I am hoping that when the 1940 census comes out I can find them in New York as that is where they went to live. As he got married 1941- so he must of left P.R. somewhere after 1930 for Manhattan, New York. Thank you for your interest.
Rose

Dr. Pablo Gil-Loyzaga, who researched the Colon in PR, in his book "cuatro siglos en PR" mentions only one "Colon" who bid for passage to Mexico and who was not descended from the family of Christopher Columbus. Ancestry recently released the 1930 Mexican Census. I sincerely hope that they acquire and release more records from our countries.

Joe

Mr Sanchez, please speak with your Mexican friends and explain the following...they have the right to be called whatever they wish, Aztec, Mayan or just plain Mexcian. The governments around the world in order to understand who came from where...For demographic reasons...Classifys nationalities in the following manner for the region of Latin America.

Those of Spanish heritage meaning if you speak Spanish or Castellano you are considered Hispanic. The World Hispanic comes from the old Spanish word Ispania or the new variation Espania (Spain) The land was called Iberia...When Cristobal Colon came to the Americas he called the Dominica Republic Hispanola. the only countries in Latin America that are not Hispanics are Brazil, French Guiana, Jamaica, Haiti and few others because their native language is not Spanish.

Haiti, French Guiana, St. Maarten, Brazil are considered Latins, just like Most of the countries in Latin America because the languages that they speak are of Latin Origin. Example are Spanish, French, Italian, Portugues and Romanian are considered the Romance Languages.

So, express to you Mexican friends...they may not want to be called Hispanic and claim that Cristobal Colon was an assasin. But, we live in the new world and in about 100 yrs from now...no one will care about your mexican friend feelings... :)

Enjoy

Vega Baja, now that is interesting, we own a house in Baga Vaja we have been trying to sell for a long time now. If anyone is interested, it is pretty cheap. We would take around $20,000 for it now, maybe even less if an offer were presented.
Anyway, we live in Livermore, my parents moved from Manati to San Francisco, then down to San Jose. Some of our family is up in fairfield.

Larry
I am descended from Catalina Colon Torres from Manati. She died of tuberculosis in the mid 1930s. She had one son who was close to 8-9 years old at the time. I've been trying to find him to see if I could get information from him. His name is/was Miguel Otero Colon. I've gone back to the 1830s in Catalina's tree. I am much more interested in finding other descendents she may have or seeing a picture of her. She died when my grandmother was about 1 1/2 old.

And there is alot. Now when it comes down to know where they came from I only know about the Pabon who came from the Canary Island in Spain. I hope I could help you out a bit..Please let me know if you find out any more I would love to know my son for my Son and Granddaugther to know for there future. Thanks

Hi, I am Colon through my mothers side. And we hail from Hatillo, PR to San German, PR. From what I understand the name Colon is the spanish translation for Columbus. I was told that the Colon's of Puerto Rico are direct decendants of Christopher Columbus himself and the rapings of the Taino indians in PR. it's kind of a bittersweet name. It's background is Italian although we speak spanish for the obvious Spanish funding of Queen Isabella. Although there are no direct records proving the ancestry line. That's what I was told! Hope that helps!

Hi jsc103086,

I was born in PR. My family moved to CT when I was 5 yrs. old. I learned about my culture from my parents and extended family on our trips back to PR. We also spoke Spanish at home, so that helped. I also majored in Spanish in college in order to learn to read, write and speak better.

If you really want to learn about PR and our culture, there are many informative history books written in English. I use a book called "THE PUERTO RICANS-A DOCUMENTARY HISTORY" written by Kal & Olga Jimenez Wagenhelm, as a source book. It starts with Colon's arrival in PR and documents the most important events that made PR the way it is today. There are also several new books about the Taino's (for those of us with Indian blood) which discuss the Taino way of life before Columbus arrived. All of these books can be found in public libraries. You can also check Google to see if they've added these books to their online collection.

You can learn and understand your culture just like those who grew up in PR by learning about it's history. You can learn to cook our wonderfull PR food with cookbooks. You have PR blood in your veins and it sounds to me like you're proud of it. So am I.
