Boniface Colonel - 1800's to present

I am new to genealogy research so any suggestions would be helpful. Boniface and his young bride from Alsaece Lorraine ran away to America and arrived in New York City in the mid 1850's with the new name of Boniface Colonel. Colonel was his military rank. By 1860 he was in Cincinnati, Ohio with his wife and 2 daughters. After her death he married a Magdalene Keller in Cincinnati, Ohio. He worked in a brewery in a section of Cincinnati called the "Over the Rhine Area". He and his second wife Magdalene Keller moved to New Richmond, Ohio. All of the Colonels from New Richmond, Ohio are decended from them. I am most interested in looking for his real name. He took his rank as his name so that his children could find out his true name. I assume therefore that Boniface was his original surname or giiven name. His first wife was supposed to be a Jewish princess which is why they had to run away. His son Joe Colonel owned Colonel's Place in New Richmond, Ohio. Thank You All for any information you can give me.

re: Colonel surname possibly "Cornell"??

Hello Everyone!!
I have "Cornell" lineage within my ancestry, and recently came upon an interesting finding which listed my ggg-grandfather as "Benjamin Colonel" and was really puzzled about it. I know from census information here in Kansas, that they lived here as "Cornell", and I'm sure thats the surname, but was wondering why if anybody could tell me, that someone would have had his last name as such? Thanks for any help.
Rowena Marten
