Leslie,

My research has been on Miles Anderson Colp / Milton Stewart Colp. A year ago, I was sent this information and thought you might find it useful.

Regards,

Rob

Hi Rob, Thanks for the reply. I am looking for John Colp b 1821 or 1822. He married Effie Ann Mc Neill in 1843 and they had 8 children by the 1850 and 1860 census. In 1850 they lived in Twp 8 R 1 E (Blairsville Twp , Williamson Co., IL where John was farming. In 1860 they had moved across the county line into Jackson Co., where John was a carpenter.
I found it interesting that John named his son born in 1849 Milton and Milton Colp named his son also born in 1849 John. Both Milton and John joined Co H, 31st Reg, Illinois Infantry.
My problem is that tis family disappears after the 1860 census. I found John buried in Hazelwood Cemetery , Elco, Alexander Co., IL with a military marker. He died in 1876. But there are no other burials with the Colp name. There is a marriage for Milton S Culp to Harriet Beaver in Union County, IL in 1877 who had a daughter named Effie in the 1880 census. Harriet Beaver Culp married again in 1895. I can't positively identify any of the girls.
My interest is that Effie McNeill was the daughter of Malcom McNeill, my ggg-grandfather. I have been working on tracing Malcolm's children to expand a work done by my great aunt Merta McNeill Sonner.
The article you sent has helped--it does state Milton had a brother named John and their parents. And I appreciate it. If you do come up with some other info, I would like to hear about it.
Thanks for listening to me and good luck with your research.
Martha

Hi Jen,

My maiden name Leslie Ann colp, father Michael A Colp, Grandfather John Dwight Colp and GreatGrandfather was Herbert Walter Colp born April 1888 and death in 1965 in Cali, who has Beaver for mother listed on his death certificate. I found his WWI registration card in Scott Mo in 1917...I am totally stumped. I have spoken to my second cousin John Stewart Colp and he said that he remembers his father Robert Stewart Colp talk about his Indian Great Grandma Beaver and does remember the name Effie? This is all I have....I too am struggling. I did find Herbert Culp in an 1900 Census listed as stepson to Harriet and Columbus Davis, another child Mandy Culp (spelled Culp too) there were other Davis children listed. I looked up the marriage 1.1.95 in Illinois. In this census she said she was married 23 years. maybe we can help each other piece some info. What is your relation?

Thanks!
Leslie

here is my email address LeslieAnnHead@aol.com

The last reply disappeared into cyber land!! I think Milton Stewart Colp is the son of John H Colp (b abt 1821, served in the Civil War d, 1876 and is buried in Hazelwood Cemetery, Alexander Co., IL) and Effie McNeill d/o Malcolm and Christianna Northington McNeill. I am working on the McNeill family and would love to get info of Effie's family. Any info would be very welcome. Martha

I was born and grew up in Colpton. My mon, dad, and other family still live there in the original homesteads. Anyone interested in knowing more about the community, please feel free to e-mail me at mcdorman@nbnet.nb.ca. The community was originally named Lower Pleasant River and renamed, probably in the late '30s -- my mother would know the exact date. It was orginally settled by Henry (my great-great-grandfather, Joseph and Nathanial Colp in the early 1800s.

Ina,Thanks for your reply . I don't think this is the same Sarah but could be connected . My great grandmother was Sarah Anne . Born in 1868 and died in 1956 in Herrin , Il. Her obituary lists siblings , John Colp of Spokane Wash.,Rose Loyd of Cambria , and Louvena Debois of Herrin . Think her father might have been William . Story was her uncle was a business man and the little town of Colp, Il. was named after him .That's all I know . Would appreciate any and all help . Thanks.
Bob

I do not have info on the actual 1907 ancestors but I have written a document on Word 97 that may help with previous COLP members and would like to attach it but am not sure how to do so on this message board. It tells of the first KOLB family who arrived in 1750 on the ANN from Rotterdam. Please contact me at lvanloon@home.com Of interest is the town of Colpton in N.S. which lists in1880 J. J. and JW.Colp as living there. I have an email contact who has visited the Colps who are living there. On the map it is about 35 km due west from Mahone Bay bordering on Queen's County. The original land grants of ????(year) show a Burton,Jacob and Maynard Colp. These Colps are not of my line that I know of and yet I think that they are related way back in the begiining. Please let me know if this is of any help. If you would like to speak to or email the lady in Bridgewater who may have present day info please email me. Laura

i don't recognize any of the names that you've listed, however, as i'm sure you are aware, there are many variations of the name colp, i.e. culp, kulp, kolp, etc. i've been checking on the colp name here there ... and everything leads back to the variations. if this helps, check the records at queens county, nova scotia, canada or lunenburg, ns, canada. it seems that that is where the name changed to the spelling colp. keep in mind that my search is limited. who knows, we may be cousins!
