Joseph Colquhoun - Maybole, scotland

Am searching for records regarding Joseph Colquhoun born about 1837 Scotland or Ireland. In Census his birthplace flips between Ireland and Scotland, yet wife and children, address are constant. His wife was Elizabeth Renfrew and they married about 1864 in Maybole.

Unable to find any documentation prior to 1851 on this gent.

Can anyone shed some light on the Irish-Scottish? I feel earlier records would show that this branch of the family originates in Scotland and went to Ireland perhaps for land.

I am stuck. Hoping someone has some ideas on where to look.

Thanks.

I am trying to trace the ancestors of Janet Mason Colquhoun (b 1899 - Glasgow), who emigrated to Australia and subsequently married Charles Crane(b 1898 - London). I think she may have had 6 siblings, and possibly parents James Reid Colquhoun (b 1864) and Joanna (aka Jane or Jean) Hunter (b1872).

Henry Adolphus 1808, Edwin Ayres 1811, George Frederick 1813, babtised these dates, Broadwater, Worthing, and
possibly other family member(s) elsewhere. Full name of
father was Joseph William and the mother has also been
referred to as Ellen. As well as the parents I would like
to find out about Edwin and George. I come from Henry and
know his line quite well as he came to Scotland, and have
all his family details, but don't know his route to get up
here and exactly when. Joseph William is listed as a Tailor
in Worthing
The servant had been held in great esteem by his ancestors' household, he explained.
COLQUHOUNs of Donegal -- Plantation Land Sales, c1610

I am researching the Colquhouns of Comstrodden from their establishment in 1385 in Stirling to their purchase of Plantation Lands in Corkagh, Labidish, Co. Donegal, Ireland, ca 1610
.
I am in possession of numerous pages of documents submitted to the Lord Lyon of Ireland for safekeeping, by Irish Colquhouns/Colhouns. These documents are in the form of pedigrees, and were probab ly made out from Colquhoun documents from the time of Umfridus de Colquhoun to the 1850's.

Since there are two main lines of the Colquhoun s of Luss; the LUSS line and the COM-
STRODDEN line th at went to Ulster at the same time, and remained very close to each other, there was bound to be a lot of inter-marrying. They were all cousins, you know. And they seemed to have changed the spelling of their name to COLHOUN at just about the same time. Naturally, this presents a very difficult genealogical challenge to "sort things out" and make things right.

Therefore, I need to contact a Colquhoun researcher who is familiar with the Colquhouns of Comstrodden in Ulster and their Scottish ancestors. ( I have a copy of Ellen R. Johnson's "COLQUHOUN/CALHOUN and their Ancestral Homelands". She is descended from the Comstrodden line, but does not discuss their residency in Ulster or their descendants.

My e-mail address is hgmcray@aol.com
William Colquhoun from c1755

After desperately searching all areas, I still can not find the parentage of William Colquhoun born about 1755 in Scotland. He married Janet Dott 10/6/1775 and I believe died in January 1848 in Edinburgh. William and Janet are featured on a number of other researchers trees, but looks as though they haven't found parents for William. I have even looked under the Peerage for the Luss Colquhouns and nothing looks positive. I have a copy of a documentation from William's son, also William Alexander Colquhoun mentioning the death of his parents, so I know William Senior was buried in Edinburgh.
Anyone throw a light on this please?
Regards,
Pat B.

R&E had Robt Jr in Scotland 4-1837 and emigrated that year, probably went to Canada 1st as their second son George was born in Nova Scotia 1842, their other 5 kids were b. in PA-Alex 1845, Jane 1847, Margaret 1849, James 1851 and John 1853. Robt Jr wed Margaret McKenzie after his civil war service, they had 15 kids: Eliz 1869, Mary 1872, Annie 1875, MaryAnn 1878, Walter 1884, George 1885, David 1886, Grace 1888, Priscilla/Pearl 1890, and Ernest 1893. The last 6 ended up in a soldiers orphanage after their mothers death in the 1890's. Where are the missing 5 kids--Margaret, Mary Katherine, Samuel, William and John, and are those the correct names. John C. Calhoun, Altoona Parks & Rec director who died in 1945 may be one of the sons-he is related somehow. Where in Scotland did R&E come from? Where are the older kids families?

I have several photographs of soldier Bruce Colquhoun, which I believe is Donald Bruce Colquhoun, Regimental no. 260748 http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gat1/066790a.gif of Gainsboro, Saskatchewan. He was drafted into the 1st Depot Battalion, Coy 3, in May 1918. These pictures were with a group of photos that belonged to my grandparents. I believe Bruce knew my grandfather because my grandfather lived in the neighbouring of Storthoaks and was drafted around the same time. If you are interested in scans of the photos of Bruce Colquhoun, please contact me.
I do not know if it was in Canada or Scotland. Their grave is in Montreal, Quebec at the Mt. Royal Cemetary. One source says he was born in 1804 and another says he served in the 1812 war between Canada and the U.S. Can anyone out there help or direct me?
Thanks
Gail

Watch your step along this Calhoun genealogical trail. You are about to lose the proper trail.

Hugh Colhoun b ca 1692 @ Crosh House in Co. Tyrone, was the son of the Reverand Alexander Colhoun/ Judith Hamilton.

Hugh had a brother named James Patrick, who came to America in 1733, and was the ancestor of John Caldwell Calhoun, the Vice President.

Therefore, Hugh was not the father of James Patrick Colhoun

John COLQHOUN m. Christian THOMSON Gorbals 1822, ch: Agnes, James, Daniel, Christina, Janet, John, Duncan, Mary Ann

Does any Colquhoun have more information about this family? I suppose the best clue is that two of the children are named Daniel and Duncan, relatively unusual names.

John Colquhoun married Christian Thomson in the Gorbals in 1822. The 1860 US census gives their ages as 65 and 61, so John was born c 1795 and Christina about 1799.

The children were:
Agnes Colquhoun b 1823
James Colquhoun b 1825
Daniel Colquhoun b 1827
Christina Colquhoun b c. 1832
Janet Colquhoun b 1833
John Colquhoun b 1835
Duncan Colquhoun b 1838
Mary Ann Colquhoun b 1841

Have found out that John and Christian/Christina emigrated to New York, Erie, Buffalo with at least Duncan and Mary Ann some time between 1855 and 1860. Daughter Christina stayed and married my gggrandfather James Paton in Tradeston in 1855. John Colquhoun's profession was given as sawyer. Christina's place of birth was said to be St Ninians, Stirling. I can't find a record of her birth but the others are on SP born in the Gorbals.
Daniel Colquhoun married in 1854 and died in 1856, his brother in law registering his death.

I’m hoping to find the parents of John Colquhoun and Christian Thomson. I don’t think I’ll be able to get this info from a US death cert as it seems death certs were not statutory till 1885 and they’d be lucky to live that long.

Hope somebody out there can help.
Colquhouns inTyrone and Donegal

There is a lot of information available on these people but I have concentrated on the two manors, in case this is of interest. Crosh House is just north of Newtownstewart, on the Plumbridge Road. The house still exists and was refurbished by the Beatties early in the century.
Cargagh is also called Corkagh and there is a townland called Corcy in County Donegal just east of Manorcunningham, in Ramoghy Parish (spelled various ways.)
I'm interested because I think my family the McCowns are connected to this family in this area. I hope this helps.

COLQUHOUNs from Blarglass, Luss, SCT > Williamsburg, Dundas Co. CAN late 1700s

Hi,

I am interested in corresponding with anyone who has Colquhouns who found their way to Canada in the late 1700s and settled in Wiliamsburg Township, Dundas County, Canada.

I have at least seven children descended from John Colquhoun (b. about 1754) and Marrion McHutcheon (McCutcheon) (b. about 1758). Their children's names were: Alexander (b. 1780); John (b. 1782); James (b. 1784); Peter (b. 1787); Lewis (b. 1861); Katharine (b. 1791) and Margery (b. 1794).

The "Story of Dundas" book by Carter states: "Alexander Colquhoun came from Scotland to Quebec in 1804. At the breaking out of the war of 1812, he received a commission as Lieutenant in the active militia of Canada, and settled at Hoasic, Williamburg Township."

I could use some help in sorting out who goes with whom. I have cemetery photos taken at the Colquhoun Cemetery in Williamsburg Township that I would be pleased to share with anyone who can help me put the puzzle pieces together.

Many thanks,
Kathryn

Looking For Thomas COLQUHOUN b. Minningaff, Kinkcudbrightsh., d. by 1888, m. Margaret WILSON

Hello Everyone

This is a cry for help. I am trying to locate Thomas COLQUHOUN - I haven't a clue where to start looking. All I know is he was dead by 1888 - he is not on the 1881 census, maybe already dead. He was married to Margaret Wilson with the only child I know of, Robert born in 1857, according to census information he was born in Minningaff, Kirkcudbrightshire. I cannot find any trace of Roberts Birth certificate to give me any clues, and I can't find a marriage for Thomas and Margaret that matches. He was a ships carpenter by trade.

I have found Robert on the 1881 census, living in Dalziel, where he is married to Isabella Paterson (marriage took place in Glasgow) with his own son Robert, but unfortunately there are no signs of his parents.

If anyone out there has any census indexes prior to the 1881 and the time to spare to have a quick look for any likely candidates for the family unit I would be eternally grateful.

Or if you think you may be related please contact me.

Hopefully,
Lynne (Colquhoun) Thompson

My ancestor, Margaret Colquhoun was age 45 on the 1851 Census of Lanark, Rutherglen, Scotland. Her husband is John Lang and they have 6 children. I have been unable to find her parents on the Old Rutherglen records although her grandparents could be Alexander and Margaret (Dunn) Colquhoun and her parents James and Janet (Young) Colquhoun although their Margarets were born later (1813 and 1818) which would make her too young. Any one else working on this particular line? Correspondence would be appreciated. Thanks Jackie

She was one of at least five children of Elizabeth Colquhoun and Arcbald Paterson, who were married in Glasgow in 1771. Elizabeth and her brother, William Colquhoun, were the children of Robert Colquhoun (1691-1755)and Janet (surname unknown). This William was the first mate on a slaver at the time of the American War of Independence and left behind a small but fascinating collection of letters to his sister, Betty (Elizabeth).

Robert Colquhoun was one of about 9 children (Bessy, Janet, Isoble, Mary, John, Walter, Issobell, Walter, born between 1683 and 1702 in Scotland) of Walter Colqhoun and Isobel Sanders.

Robin Buchanan (robinswood@totalise.co.uk) of Gloucester, England
