I know this post is old, but I know that while some Colquhoun clan migrated to the US and filtered through North Carolina, Georgia, etc.......there were also some that came in, I believe, around the NorthEast coast of the US into Canada.....I had seen someone who was a descendent of them on their own blog pages, post that they were in Canada up until a few generations ago and are now in the Oregon and Washington area.....hope this helps, and best of luck

Okay, I'm confused. Soory :/. Just trying to make sure I have this right. You said that your ancestor, Archibald Colquhoun came over with his mother (Mary___) and her husband (Dougal Carmichal)...then you said with his sister Ann and Archibald......are there two Archibalds? Also, was Mary previously with the Colquhoun last name of her former husband, thus passing the Colquhoun name to Archibald, and not Charmichal?
I know that there were quite a few Colquhouns that came over (mostly in and around the NC area as land to the north of this had been taken by then), and I do remember one being a remarriage, and as a step-father. I know that the names Archibald and Mary occured quite a few times in the family and was also passed down.
My 'Archibald ancestor' would have been born around 1770 in Scotland and by the last name Colquhoun...he was married to a Mary (unsure of her maiden name but believe her parents were a Ducan/Duncan Colquhoun and a Florence Lamond.....making her likely a cousin to Archibald and already with the last name Colquhoun! Whoa! Another interesting bit...I have Charmichaels in my family too, from Scotland, who married Carters...

I think we are talking about two different Mary Colquhoun. My Archibald came to the port of Wilmington NC USA
in 1776 from Scotland with his mother Mary her Husband Dougal Carmichal and Children Archibald Colquhoun (My ancester) and his sister Ann Colquhoun. Now Ann could have been named Mary Ann but I have no proof but I have heard through family that she married a Sulivan but no proof some of the family still live in the McCoil SC area. wade@sccoast.net

Hi Jen,

I am adopted and have only just applied, and received my birth mother's marriage certificate. My mother's name was Rita May Taylor, she was from Balmain. She married Kenneth Harold Morton in 1953. Her father was Herbert Teasle Taylor and mother Rita May Colquhoun! This information is only new to me and I have only just started my search. I think, no, it's obvious, that there is a blood connection here. I am married, have been for 34 years with no children, so for me to find relatives is like winning the lottery. I don't want to divulge too much yet, but so want to know more. Please contact me via the abovementioned email.

Kind regards,

Ann Willis

Thank you elwynsoutter1 for your reply! The Griffith's Valuation had been accessed and the 3 William Colquhouns noted, however, you have expanded my knowledge about each of them by interpreting the Griffith's Valuation - again thanks - it was most confusing to me. I, too, expect the families may have been Presbyterian. Yes, spelling variations have been checked out as well. PRONI will need to wait until I can get over to Ireland again although I do check the website from time to time. Merry Christmas!

Griffiths Valuation has 3 William Colquhoun households listed in Ireland. One is in Curraghmulkin, in the parish of Longfield East, in Tyrone. The second is in Edencarnin South, the third nearby in Killydesert, both in the parish of Kilmacrenan, in Co Donegal. These two are close together and could well be owned by the same person, or if not it’s likely to be a relative.

Edencarnin South/Killydesert are a little to the west of the N56 from Letterkenny to Kilmacrenan. In 1858, the main farm is on Edencarnin where William has a house, offices (outbuildings) and 57 acres which he shares with Alex Colquhoun, who also has a separate house and offices. The property in Killydesert is a caretakers house, offices and 5 acres.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

In Curraghmulkin, the William there, in 1859, had a house, offices and 8 acres plus a share of a mountain for grazing etc with some others. Curraghmulkin is beside the Holme Rd, which leads off the B84 Dooish Rd, which is about 10 miles west of Oamgh.

There were no Colquhoun households in Curraghmuklkin by the 1901 census:

www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Drumquin/Cu...

No Colquhouns in Killydesert in 1901:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Ede...

But there was one family in Edencarnan South:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Ede...

Note that the spelling of the surname will vary in Ireland. No-one bothered too much about that in those days. Can’t see any will listed for either family on the PRONI website.

Your next step would be to search local church records. They were probably all Presbyterian. You can see what records exist on the PRONI website:

http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/research_and_records_held/cata...
Joseph Colquhoun (born about 1852) married Eliza Moffat in Lanarkshire, Scotland in December 1873. He indicated that he, his father William Colquhoun, and his mother Eliza Ralston (deceased) were all from Ireland. 1881, 1891 and 1901 census information indicate he was born in Ireland. Family lore indicates possibly from Londonderry area. Looking for "outside the box" ideas of tracing where & when Joseph was born, where William and Eliza married, their parents names', etc.

HELP!!! LOOKING FOR THOMAS COLQUHOUN ESQIURE (b. abt 1770-60)

Hello,
I'm looking for the ancestors (parents at least) of my g-g-g-great grnadfather Thomas Colquhoun (Esquire?). I suspect he was born in Ireland but have found no confirmation of this. I think I found one of his brothers, but in an English census through a Jane Colquhoun ( I assumed it was Jane Faubert, but i'm probably wrong).
The only thing I know for sure is that he married Jane Faubert in 1794,and they had several children, Samuel Colquhoun among them. Samuel was born in Co. Tyrone, Ireland in 1800, and married Jane Sproule in 1824, they had several children. One of them was Cpt. Isaac Colquhoun (my great- great grandfather) who mrried Emmeline Sophia Coxworthy.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Irene

Thanks for this answering this query. I descend from the Archibald Colquhoun/Calhoun, born about 1800, baptised 1802 in the Old Bluff Presbyterian Church, NC. He was the son of an Archibald Colquhoun and wife Mary (dispute whether she was a Colquhoun or some other maiden name). My Archibald went to Talbot Co GA, where he m. 1st wife??-Eliza Simmons, 21 Jan 1830, Upson Co GA. No solid information as to who her parents were. They moved to Chambers Co GA, where I think she died. I descend from their first child, Harriet V. Calhoun, b. 1832, prob. GA. Harriet m. James Hamilton Simonton, they both d. in north Louisiana. Archibald was called Arche or Archer. I would like to learn more about your Archibald. Thanks....Jackie Helmke Jhelmke@sbcglobal.net

The Brocks were living north of York (Toronto) in Vaughan Twp. at the time of the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and some family members were arrested as rebels. I am related to this family by two sibling marriages. They were not related to Gen. Isaac Brock.

We know that Mary Ann Blair was the daughter of William and Jane Blair. The family tree that connected Mary Ann to our Blair family tree had a number of errors. If William and Jane were my relations her maiden name would have been Brock. We are looking for proof. We know that there were a William and Jane Blair living near Perth Co. who were not our relations. We have no family history as far east as Perth County. We therefore have three reasons to be doubtful of the family tree we obtained the information from: errors, location, and two William Blairs married to a Jane. Mary Ann's marriage registration did not have her mother's maiden name. We cannot find Mary Ann's birth registration either. What was Jane Blair's maiden name? Do you know who Mary Ann's other Blair relations were?

Have been looking for proof of Christian and her siblings in Scotland. Would you share what you have found? It appears that Christian possibly had a brother named Daniel and a mother named Nancy who lived with Daniel in Cumberland County, Nc. Christian was in census next door. Christian had children born while in Nc. Duncan son of Malcolm Colquhoun and Christian McCorquodale was baptized Oct 25, 1795 at Bluff Presbyterian Church. Arch Colquhoun and spouse Isabel had a son namned Duncan baptized on Jan 10, 1796 at Bluff. Hope you are still out there.

is there a correct list somewhere of the colquhoun family from Humphrey de Kilpatrick until the 1800s. I am trying to get this family straight in my brain. My ggrandmother is Eliza Mae Calhoun, daughter of John Conrad Calhoon, son of Nathanial Cahoon & Abia Stuart. There are so many Humphreys, Roberts, Johns, etc, and so many conflicting reports about their wives, I can't get it straightened out. Just when I think I have it right, I find someone else who has a different wife than I did.

Hi Karen

Thank you for your reply. It sounds like you've got the answer to my problem! Do you happen to have this marriage certificate with the stamp scanned on your pc? I'd love a copy if you do. I'll most certainly see if I can find divorce records online, now I know to look.

Is your husband's tree on Ancestry? Your message sounds as though you've had a look at mine (well my husband's). I'd be very interested to have a browse - I'm in the process of putting it into as "complete" a state as I can, in order to print off and have it bound as a present for my mother-in-law who is a Colquhoun on her mother's side (her mother emigrated to Australia in the early 1900s. There are other Colquhouns who also emigrated, and thanks to this message board, I'm now in touch with one descendant - and also another Colquhoun still in Glasgow.

Looking forward to hearing from you again. If via tree on Ancestry, it would be more private and I could give you my email address.

Regards

Jan

Hello there
my name is Karen, and on my husbands side there is an Adam Colquhoun (I think several of your colquhoun's are related to his as at least three of his have the middle name Houston).
I have a copy of this Adams marriage certificate to Agnes Paterson and there is a small oval official stamp at the top left hand corner which states they were divorced, but doesn't give that date of this. There will be scottish records somewhere (old Glasgow court records, or the scottish national archives in Edinburgh)giving the reason for the divorce which might throw light onto what happened.
I hope that this helps you with Agnes. It may be that her fathers name has been listed by a middle name on one of the certificates and he could have married twice giving the different names for the mother/step mother. (I had this happen with one of my ancestors).
Yours
Karen

Hi,

I have hit a brickwall with a Mary FLECKFIELD (1677-1724) m Duncan McNair in Glasgow in 1698. I found this piece of info on a Canadian board, but no source "...the Fleckfield family into which he married were people of standing in the craft, and, on no fewer than 5 occasions, members occupied the office of Deacon." This was in answer to someone looking for a Jno Fleckfield in the early 1700's in Glasgow (complete detais a blur after 10 minutes!)

Would love to tie in the different Fleckfield ancestors

Regards from Linda
