Hi Polly

I have a possible connection - Marriage of Mary A Colquhoun (born 1834) to Peter Barr on 5/4/1856 lists Mary's parents as John Colquhoun and Isabella Mc Leod. My information is sketchy but I believe 2 or 3 children were born in Scotland and then they moved to Ireland in the early 1860's to the Muff Co. Donegal/ Kilderry, Co. Derry area.

Info is from the Family Search.org website

Regards

Brendan Kelly

Robert A Colquhoun and Jean Wenn Shaw

Robert A.(Aloisious)sp? Colquhoun and Jean Wenn Shaw were both twins. Robert had a twin brother who married Jean's twin sister. They were married all together on the same day. Robert and Jean migrated to Canada. They had a daughter Catherine either born of conceived in Scotland. After that they had two sons Gary Alexander Colquhoun and Robert Colquhoun. I remember Gary's mother talking about a Gavin that she maintained contact with. I believe he was a relative on her side. Robert modelled ships, military figurines, planes, etc., and was part of the team of Modeller's that produced the models for the TV series Star Lost. Robert had a brother George who died in the Burma War. George's medal record says he was born in Dumfries so Robert may have been born there too. I do not know if George was his twin or if it was another brother. George from what we can tell would have been part ot the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Both Robert and Jean are deceased and their children have no knowledge of their overseas family. I would so love to find any descendants from this family so we can connect and put the pieces back together. Any hints or clues appreciated. I just don't know where to start. I want to preserve my daughter's heritage and be able to connect her, her father, and his sister with any living descendants of their family. Until I find them they have no family other than themselves. Please, please help me find them.

my grandmother was Mary Colquhoun born 1872 in Sunderland. I cannot find a birth cert for her and the only info I have for her before she married my grandfather Thomas Wilkinson was the 1881 census where at 9 years of age she was in an Industrial school in New Castle and that her father was called John. I would love it if anyone out there can help me with any info. I do remember my mother saying she came from Ireland and they where horse dealers but I dont know if this is true.

Hello Jan,
It looks very much like there will be another person (myself) searching for William. While all our facts on Daniel do not match entirely, there are several coincidences, in fact too many.

First, my mother (bo 1897 Sydney NSW) clearly recalled a visit when she was a small child of an 'Uncle Willy' who worked on a newspaper in Melbourne. This Uncle Willy I've never found although she was quite clear that he was one of her Colquhoun relatives.

Second - I have Daniel's parents as Robert C & Mary Cullen marr. 1830 New Monkland Lnks. But - Daniel's wife bore the surname of MacMillan (Christian Campbell). Could there be a wee mix up here?

I so far have found only 3 children for Robert & Mary, but with large gaps between each birth, sufficient for there to have been more. Robert b. c1833 - 1886, Archibald b. c 1839, Daniel 1849 - 1935. If this is your Daniel & his dates match, would you give me your private email address & I can send you the 3 or 4 pages I have on him & his family, there may be a detail here or there you've not discovered yet.

I just prefer the 'privacy' of individual email.

I also have pics of Daniel as a teenager & as a young man. Incidentally, there are a few folk amidst my Colquhoun pics who remain unidentified & it's always possible William is there too if indeed your William worked in Victoria as a journalist.

The Colquhoun family I refer to have been talented folk. Artists, Art Critic (Melb. Age), doctors & surgeons & of course, the mysterious Uncle Willy, newspaperman.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Regards,
Barbara

Dear Barbara
Thanks for your reply. If his parents are Robert Colquhoun and Mary McMillan, then yes, we're talking about the same Daniel - and many thanks, but yes, I also have a considerable amount of information on him. It's other members of the family that I'm trying to follow - not easy as I don't know if they went back to Scotland or the other brother joined them in England.
Regards
Jan

Hello. my mothers maiden name was Colquhoun and in tracing her ancestry here in Australia I found that her great grandfather John Colquhoun was born at Raphoe in or about 1820. his mothers name was Ann, they were both sent Australia as convicts in about 1839. He was convicted of stealing a chicken and she was convicted of receiving a chicken. they both got seven years transportation. her name on being sent to Oz was Ann Murray but I dont know if this was a maiden name or a later married name.

I am descended from Leadhills Hastie's as well. I don't know about Janet specifically. I can tell you that conditions at Leadhills deteriorated in the 1830s prompting most of my relatives (Hastie's and their relatives) to move to the Woodhead Lead Mines at Carsphairn, which began operations in 1838. Carsphairn is just 9 miles from Dalmellington. Others moved more directly to Dalmellington to work in the coal mines or iron works, the latter of which opened in 1845. Your Janet's family may have been part of that masse exodus from Leadhills. A look at the records at Scotlandspeople may help you. I have done a great deal of research there...

Am searching for records regarding Joseph Colquhoun born about 1837 Scotland or Ireland. In Census his birthplace flips between Ireland and Scotland, yet wife and children, address are constant. His wife was Elizabeth Renfrew and they married about 1864 in Maybole.

Unable to find any documentation prior to 1851 on this gent.

Can anyone shed some light on the Irish-Scottish? I feel earlier records would show that this branch of the family originates in Scotland and went to Ireland perhaps for land.

I am stuck. Hoping someone has some ideas on where to look.

Thanks.

William Colquhoun from c1755

After desperately searching all areas, I still can not find the parentage of William Colquhoun born about 1755 in Scotland. He married Janet Dott 10/6/1775 and I believe died in January 1848 in Edinburgh. William and Janet are featured on a number of other researchers trees, but looks as though they haven't found parents for William. I have even looked under the Peerage for the Luss Colquhouns and nothing looks positive. I have a copy of a documentation from William's son, also William Alexander Colquhoun mentioning the death of his parents, so I know William Senior was buried in Edinburgh.
Anyone throw a light on this please?
Regards,
Pat B.
