Hi,

I am searching for information on my great-grandmother. She was born in Virginia in 1890 and married Walter Basil Hood of Maryland (don't know when). She died in 1985.

My search for her was a little skewed at first because I was told her last name was Crenshaw (my grandfather's middle name). I saw that Troy listed a Colquitt that married a Crenshaw... too far back to be Mary's parents. I wonder if Crenshaws and Colquitts married frequently?

Im looking for information on her family, I know from my father that there was a farm outside of Richmond he used to go to as a kid.

Below is a link to her obit.

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ho...;

Sarah was evidently married to a Samuel before marrying James Colquitt, who was a son of John Colquitt, died around 1769 in Cumberland county, Va. James Colquit's will in Essex county, Va. names three daughters. After his death, his wife Sarah Colquitt moved to Franklin county, Ky. where she left will (1796) naming her son William Samuel and two daughters. Believe the James Wales Colquitt mentioned was the son of John Colquitt who died 1799 in Oglethorpe county and was called J. W. Colquitt, he was probably named James William Colquitt. This James W. Colquitt of Oglethorpe county, Ga. had relationship with John Colquitt and family for over 40 years. James W. Colquitt filed a caveat against John Colquitt's will(1800)in Oglethorpe county, Ga..

There were two Colquitt brothers in the 11th Texas Cav. during the Civil War, who were in Rome Ga, around 1864. According to Floyd Co., Ga. history, one married Jerry Isbell's daughter. Capt. Jack Colquitt (leader of the Colquitt Scouts) was killed by the Prior brothers, and part of this band was hunted down and killed because they had killed the Prior brothers father.I do believe some of the children in Vincent Colquitt's household were his grandchildren.

Have you considered that the child Tom Patty might be the son of the 26 year-old daughter Nancy? Tom would likely have been born / conceived within the year following the end of the Civil War. Who knows what circumstances might have surrounded this family at this time?

Just a thought. Good luck with the search.

Doug

I am looking for any information or photo of Tom Patty who shows up on the 1870 census living with Vinson (Vincent?) and Catherine Colquet. He was 3 yrs of age at the time. He was found dead on 9-16-1907 under suspicious circumstances after catching cattle rustlers in the act. That is pretty much all we know. We don't know how he came to live with the Colquet Family. Any information welcome. Thanks

Hi Mary,
Try typing into a google search: John Colquitt m. Anne Hawes. John and Anne Colquitt both died in Cumberland, County, VA in the 1760s. This should get you to a family tree of John Colquitt. There were several John Colquitts down the line from 1513 (Isle of Guernsey when it was a French/Norman Island). Or try typing in "Colquitt family" into a Google search.

This information is from geneaology records of Zelma Price of Mississippi sent to me. This record includes my Colquitt Family.

"Miss Anne Watson, of London, states that the name Colquitt takes, with or other variations -- Calkert, Calkett, Cocket, Cockett, Cocquet, Colquette, Colquit, Colquite, Colquitte, Corket, etc, the ones shown previously. . She states that their came with William the Conqueror from Normandy to England a man later referred to as "John Colquette", and that by the year 1500, the name was being known as Colquitt.

Re: ? Colquitt of Essex Co Va

In the COLQUITT book by Zelma Wells Price, I found only two references to "Samuel" as a last name.
The entry on page 151 reads:
"3 April 1744. Will of Anthony Samuel, of St. George's Par.: One of the executors, John Calket, Sr. (Index gives last name as "Calkett".) (WB.-A (1722-1749), p. 338, Spots Co., Va.; "SPOTS", p. 7)
(Note: John Colquitt (3) then living in Essex Co., Va.)

Mrs. Price gives the birth date of 1682-1708 for this John Colquitt. He was married to Anne Hawes.

The second reference is to a Peter Samuel who was one of the executors of James Colquitt's will (James being the son of the John mentioned above.) James's wife was named Sarah. James's sons were: William Samuel, James Wales, and John Hawes.

Family rumor is that Alma Pearl Burns' two sons, one nicknamed "Jack", the other, Terah Eugene Burns, nicknamed "Bill" were fathered by a Tom Colquitt. don't know if spelling is correct on the name. I don't know if they were married, but he was not around as they grew up. More rumor is that Jack shot himself. They lived in the NE Texas areas of Lamar & Fannin counties.
Any thoughts or help would be great! Hitting a brick wall with this line. Thanks.

WILTON COLQUITT Washington DC 1940's

I am researching my mothers' first husband WILTON COLQUITT.

She was born IDA MAE BARNETTE 1925 Castlewood Russell Va.

I believe they met in Washington DC sometime between 1943-1947 and married. They never lived in Va according to her remaining family.

They only were married for a year or 2 because she married my father EUGENE ROBERT WILLMANN sometime around 1948. I was born in 1950 and I know she had a son who was stillborn before I was conceived.

I have never found any records for a WILTON COLQUITT on any web sites. I do have photograph of him that he gave to my grandmother when he met with her in Russell Co Va after they were apart. He seems to much older than my mother was at the time and she was born in 1925. I have put it on a few websites as an unknown. So far, no information.

Any leads would be greatly appreciated.

Regenia Campbell bobnregi@verizon.net

I am interested in your Terry, Ransom, Colquitt research as I "appear to be" a descendant of Daniel Terry m. to Christian Evans dau. of Walter Evans....another researcher has Christian Evans m. to a Champness Terry but I am not sure that is correct. Daniel Terry had a son named Moses Terry that m. a Sarah ( we think she is a Keeble as Ambrose Ransome is living next door to Moses Terry in Halifax Co VA.. Moses sold Ambrose the land and Ambrose appears to be m. to a Keeble) Moses Terry's son Daniel m. the widow Dorothy (Ransome) Proby after the death of her father Richard Ransom in 1792 of Gloucester Co VA. Daniel appears to have gone into WilkesCo GA with Moses for that is where Moses died in 1797 and then Daniel goes back into HalifaxCo VA and "appears" to be living with Dorothy's brother. I am looking for Dorothy' s lineage beyondher father Richard that d. 1792 leaving Dorothy over 20 slaves, I have the names of the slaves from Lawsuits filed in Halifax Co VA by her son Peter R. Proby from 1819 to 1824. Daniel and Dorothy had John Terry, Kibble/Keeble Terry ( my line), Thomas Terry and Lucy R. Terry who appears to have m. a Nathaniel Buckingham in Bedford Co TN. The name in the Buckingham bible matches her name and birth year and family tales state the terrys and Buckinghams are kin..sorry got off the subject. Daniel and Christians dau. Christian is reported to have m. Anthony Colquitt,as I have not researched this myself I am only taking others words on this connection.

they are: Peter, Jack, Charles, Henry, Robert, James, John, Nelson, Juno, Fanny, Jenny, Polly, Louisa, Mary, Parthena, Peter, Barney, Isaac, Jessie, Lewis and Ben ( making this 21 slaves) who was sold off by Daniel Terry and this is what started the lawsuit by his step son Peter R. Proby to stop Daniel from selling any more slaves of Dorothy to pay his own debts. Ben was sold to Doctor James Singleton and J. S. was reported to head off to the Florida border ( this is stated in the lawsuit). I have the breakdown of who got which slaves after the lawsuit was settled. They were divided in 7 groups. You have to thank Marge Brown of VA for this amazing find for it comfirmed what I had been trying to prove for 15 years that my Terry line was out of Daniel Terry & Christian Evans.

Parthena takes the name of Proby and she is found in Bedford Co Tn cenus records.

the lawsuit only lists 19 of the slaves that were divided between the Proby and Terry children....Peter and Frances are not on the list. There was one more lawsuit that I did not get copies of....the clerk copied one set twice so I will have to wait a couple of years until they can get these papers on microfilm to get the third set of papers. She was doing Marge a favor when she photo copied the other sets...something you should never do to almost 200 year old papers that have not seen the light of day since 1824. We were lucky to get these.

The Terry and Probys went into Bedford Co Tn and some of the slaves took the Proby and Terry last names. The Julius Terry that is in Bedford Co Tn was the slave of my Terry lines Aunt Sarah (Terry) Terry.

Sorry that is all I have.

The Ransom line was out of Gloucester Co VA before going into Halifax Co VA and that was a burned county during the Civil War and ALL records were destroyed. If it were not for the lawsuit papers I would have never known the mother of my Kibble Terry or the names of her 2 brothers and their father.

forgot to answer your question. The slaves belonged to Richard Ransom that d 1793 Gloucester Co VA and they were left to his daughter Dorothy (Ransom) Proby who was a widow that m. Daniel Terry just after the death of her father placing the marriage about 1794.

There may have been more slaves that went to the sons but I have no information on them.

As a Colquitt coming from & living in England there are many variations on our surname, some say the name is of Viking (Nordic) origin coming to the Isle of Man with the Viking invasion, others say it is a French name, others say Irish.Others Welsh?
I can confirm the name is Cornish & Celtic in its origin.Hence the above connections, i can confirm that
he first part of the name "COL" means running water or brook & the "QUIT" or "QUITE" refers to a wooded area.
So the name as it stands means " A small running brook in a wooded area" hence the origin of the Colquitt name & its many similarites

I am looking for anyone who has a WILTON COLQUITT in their family tree. I just recently was informed that mother was married before to Wilton Colquitt. Her name was Ida Mae Barnette ( Mae) born in Russell County Va. I would imagin they were married sometime between 1943 and 1947. They divorced and my mother remarried around 1948-49 to my father.

She lived in Washington D.C. after she left home. They may have met there. I do have a picture of WILTON COLQUITT.

If anyone recognises this family please contact me at bobnregi@verizon.net

Many Thanks,
Regenia Campbell

I saw your message. Alfred Holt Colquitt's father was Walter Terry Colquitt. Walter was the son of Henry and Nancy Singleton Holt. Walter and Nancy were married in Halifax County, Virginia. They moved to Georgia with a large group from Halifax County which included a large numbers of different Holt families. Nancy's parents were Simon and Sarah Hines Holt.

I hate when it eats the post, so apologies if this actually comes through twice...

Sigh...

Amanda must have been a busy woman.

Thank you, Troy, now I have a better idea of where the Smith name came from.
My Amanda was born in 1851, so Amanda Colquet would not match as my lady would have been about 19 in 1870.
Do you know if RJ Colquitt died in 1870? Women in that time period would have remarried quickly, especially if there was a child involved. By the 1900 census, Amanda states that she had borne 14 children, 9 of which were alive at that time. I have names for eight of them the oldest being Emma born in 1877. As the rest of the noted brood is born with the following pattern, I am thinking that the others (or at least 3 of them) were born prior to 1876. (1881, 1883, 1885, 1887, 1889, 1891, 1895)

Do you have any more infomation on RJ's family?

Thank you,
Laura
