Y-DNA Study

Are you a male with the surname of Colson/Collson/Coulson/Colston and wondered how you might be related to others with the same surname? Is your Y-DNA that of the Celts or Anglo-Saxons? Now is the perfect time to discover the origin of the DNA that makes you a male. Family Tree DNA has just announced a drastically reduced price of only $119 for the Y-DNA37 test (37 markers are required to have a thorough understanding of relatedness) and this price will remain ONLY until 31 December 2009. I paid over $249 for this same test a few years back. Don't pass up this opportunity to understand the genetic origin of your surname.

WALTER COLSON

Does anyone have a connection to Walter Colson who married Elizabeth Alice Mathews (Mathers) in South Africa.
Walter would have been born in approximately 1850. They lived at the Stone Cottage of Diocesan College, Rondebosch (Bishops) where he worked as a caretaker. Further to that the family were members of St Pauls Anglican Church, Rondebosch. It is understood that the family had connections to France, USA and also the UK and Sweden, but we have no further information. Any information would be gratefully appreciated.
I believe Robert Colson was my( ggrandfather, Rev. William Weaver Colson's )father. William W. Colson had a sister named Laura. She later moved to Connecticut. You wrote that Mary Laura Colson was Robert and Laura's mother. I believe you wrote in an earlier post that Mary was buried at the Red Hill Church cemetery. My ggrandfather was ordained at the Red Hill Baptist Church in NC.
As I stated earlier, we are an African American family and my ggrandfather (WW Colson) refused to talk about his father. We do not know why, there was some speculation that he was white, but this does not sound true, because one of my uncles has a photo portrait? of Robert Colson and he is very obviously African American.

My GrandFather was a Colson my mother and her brother were born to this family and then they divoriced. We believe he moved back to Iowa and married back into the Jewish Faith. The death record I got off the internet SSDI index. I am just going by the dates of birth to add his death, I have no more information than this so am still guessing a little. I have not been able to truly connect his family line. Maybe if I knew where to look for Chruch records I could do better. Thank you for taking the time to reply
Paul Walworth

Her father was James Madison Colson believed to have been born in North Carolina ca 1775. Family tradition has the family originally from Virginia.

He married Amelia (Milly) Tinsley abt 1814 in Knox County Kentucky. Amelia was his second wife.

Amelia, born abt 1794, was the daughter of William Tinsley and Marianna Sharp.

Both James and Amelia died of yellow fever within 8 hours of each other sometime between Sept 1845 and April 1846 at their Yellow Creek home and buried in a common grave at home.

This portion of Knox County was taken to form Harlan County and subsequently taken to form Josh Bell now just Bell County.

The earliest record I can find James in Knox County is in the 1803 tax records. Other family researchers say he is in the 1802 tax records but I have no been able to find him there yet.

Their children were:
William Tinsley (my gg grandfather)
James Madison
John Calvin
Mary Ann
Catherine America
Alfred Porter
Elizabeth (Betty)
Henry
George Washington
Emily
Leander Harrison

I can not find any evidence that there was any Native American bloodlines but most of the records have been lost or destroyed.

Hope this helps.

Bob

Evie was Sterling Colson's mother. From what we know he died in prison? in Florida. So it is possible that she raised his son. Sterling is my mother's biological father, but we never knew him. However, we used to visit Maw Maw Edmonds in Northport.

Hi Mitchell,
I realize this is an older post, hopefully you will see it. My grandmother, Isabelle May Colson Russell, was the daughter of Agnes Barr Colson (born abt 1869 Scotland) and Charlie (Charly, Charles) Colson born abt 1858 Sweden.
Charlie Colson, stone mason, is on her birth cert. and Isabelle was born in Joliet, Illinois. The city directory lists him as living in Joliet from 1884-1888 when my grandmother was born. Agnes died shortly after (within a year) and Charlie disappears off the face of the earth. I am unable to find any marriage, death, ect records on either of them. Isabelle went to live in Huntington, WV. by 1900 with her aunt, Elizabeth Calderwood and husband James.
She moved back to Joliet and married my grandfather, Thomas Russell in 1909, their first child being born in 1912 with Elizabeth Calderwood as midwife. Whatever happened to Charlie Colson & wife Agnes is a mystery. Any connection ??

Agnes Barr Colson

Searching for any info on my great grandmother Agnes (nee Barr) Colson. She was born in Sweden, abt 1869 and came to the U.S. possibly with her 2 sisters Elizabeth Barr and Isabelle Barr abt. 1882. Elizabeth married James Calderwood
(possibly in WV or Il) and Agnes married Andrew Carney from PA. in Joliet,Illinois abt 1901-1903. Agnes married Charlie Colson abt 1887 (my grandmother Isabelle May Colson) was born Jan 24, 1888. Charlie Colson was born abt 1858 in Scotland. Agnes died shortly thereafter and was raised by Elizabeth and James Calderwood, 1900 census shows she is age 12, born in Il. and living in Huntington, Cabell, WV. with James and Elizabeth Calderwood & listed as Isabelle Calderwood. I grew up thinking my grandmother's maiden name was Calderwood, as told me by my mother.
Isabelle Colson married Thomas Russell in Joliet, Il. Sep. 25, 1908. Somewhere along the line she must have moved back to Joliet, Il. as a child, possibly living with aunt Isabelle Barr Carney. Isabelle named her daughter May Elizabeth Carney and they lived in Chicago. Anyone with info regarding this family, please contact me. THANX !

Charlie Colson

I am searching for any info on Charlie Colson(spelled as such on my grandmother's birth cert) It lists him as being age 30 (born abt 1858 in Sweden) when she was born Jan. 24, 1888 Isabelle May Colson in Joliet, Illinois. His wife was Agnes (nee Barr) Colson, age 19 at time of birth which would have put her birth date abt. 1869 in Sweden. He is listed as a stonemason on my grandmother's birth cert. Her marriage cert lists her maiden name as Colson.
Family tale states that Agnes comitted suicide shortly after the birth by drinking strictnine. I have been unable to find any graves, funeral or death records, nor any other info on Charlie or Agnes and my grandmother passed before I was born. My grandmother, Isabelle, was raised by James and Elizabeth Calderwood, sister of Agnes Barr. I did find the three of them living in Huntington, Cabell, West Virginia on the 1900 census. In 1921 Elizabeth was midwife at the birth of my grandmother's son, James Russell, in Joliet, Illinois. No listing in any census or directory of James & Elizabeth Calderwood living in Illinois. I did find Charlie Colson, stonemason, living in Joliet, Il. from 1884-1888 in the City directories. Agnes Barr Colson had another sister, Isabelle, that came to the U.S. in 1882, possibly with Agnes(then age 6) and Elizabeth.(From 1910 census) Isabelle Barr married Andrew Carney (from PA) in 1903, Chicago, Il.
It seems as I have hit a wall here....anyone knowing of Charlie Colson (Coulson?) please contact me....Thanx !

Carole,
Thank you for the additional info on Colson B's first wife and family. Elizabeth's(Aunt Lizzie as we called her) first husband was Buchard Altman and second husband was Roy Anders. I am puzzled by the last names of Alva's and Colson B's two children ( Brennecke). Could you shed some light on this? Colson B was married second to Joan-last name unknown- and I think they had Gary or Garland or maybe Gary Garland. He was married a third time to Dorothy Gordon. No children.

Thanks again
Sue

Carole,

Thanks for clearing up the name issue . That makes sense now. Uncle Roy Granville Anders was born in the year 1903 and died in 1961. He is buried along with Aunt Lizzie in the Williamstown, Grant Co., Ky cemetery. I don't know any other information on Joan but Dorothy Gordon is still living. I don't know a birthdate for her.

If I can help you with any other family info, let me know

Sue

Laura is my ggrandmother. Mary Colson whom I learned later married Thomas Dumas. She is Laura's, Robert's mother. She also had other children. They were George, Abraham(whom my grandfather was named after) John, Virginia & Regina. Thomas Dumas is not their father. Laura's father is Bill Martin. Not sure if he is the father of the other
I have a cousin who is Robert ggranddaughter. Also Robert granddaughter lives in Connecticut. Her father was Robert son who is your ggrandfather. If you have any information regarding Robert please share.
I have some information regarding Laura. She married Oscar Kirby then a Lenton.
There are now six unique genetic lines in the Colson/Collson/Coulson/Colston YDNA study. If you are a male with one of these surnames, please consider joining the study at http://www.ftdna.com/public/colson. It is hopeful to discern Colonial patriarchs and their origin in the British Isles.

Cheers,
Steven Colson
Colson Surname YDNA Study Administrator
