Hi!

I'm Jeri Ball now Brentlinger. My mom is Brenda Darlene Shrader—her father was your uncle William Robert. I remember meeting your parents over the years throughout my childhood. I even remember visiting you guys in FL...my parents probably have photos laying around somewhere. Your dad made the best sausage gravy! My mom always says, "I can never make it like my Uncle Gene!"

Can you share any information you may have on Zeke & Agnes?

I really don't have anything on them, just names and dates that need confirming. I would love to one day know where in Germany our Shraders come from.

I hope you are well.

Regards,

Jeri (Ball) Brentlinger

Alice Colston Lawson - Kentucky

Mrs. Alice Lawson, Dies At Age Of 102 Years (DOD 5/7/1968)

It was on May 1 that Mrs. Alice Colston Lawson celebrated her 102nd birthday. Tuesday, the centenarian, one of Bourbon County Kentucky residents, died at her home in Millersburg.

Bourbon County Coroner, Bruce Forsythe said Mrs. Lawson was found dead in her bed by her grandson, Colston Madden, about 11:30 a.m.

Madden had gone to his grandmother's home about 9 a.m. to see that she had her breakfast, Mrs. Lawson, residing alone. At 11:30 he returned to the home to check on her, as was his practice, and found her dead.

Madden and other relatives and friends made regular checks at her home throughout several times every day to make sure everything was in order with her because of her advanced age.

A native of Nicholas County, Kentucky she was the daughter of the late Isaac and Americus Colston and was a member of the Woods Chapel Methodist Church in Millersburg.

In addition to the grandson, she is survived by two great grandsons, Colston Jr. and Robert Madden, Cleveland, Ohio.

The body was removed to the Martyn-Hurley Funeral Home, however, funeral arrangements are not complete.

If anyone rcognizes these photos, please let me know. I found these two old tintypes in a box of old photos, but no one in the family seems to know who they are. Most likely they are from the Colston, Coulson family of Grant County Ky or nearby. They could be Risen, Rison, Denny, or Faulkner also from Grant county or nearby. Click on the picture to get a better view, they are slightly distorted in the post. Thanks!

Re: Colstons from England to Canada

Hi, Reg,

This is really strange. In fact, I have a cousin Rosemarie, in Canada, who is the daughter of Rose Colston, who was adopted by, I think, Great Aunt Lil. I also seem to recall my mother also referring to an aunt Rose. So that is another name in common.

I am pretty new at all this and really know rather little about my family history other than what my mother told me. My parents married very late, so my mother's memories went back a generation earlier than most. But my mother died suddenly when I was in my 20's so I never got a chance to ask a lot of questions for clarification.

I do know that the Colstons in my family came from Birmingham and considered that their home. The Greens came from elsewhere, but maybe, as I understood it, not very far away. Mother said that many years earlier the Green family had been rich and that somewhere, not in Birmingham, there had been a Green Castle or Green Manor, or something like that, that had fallen in ruins long ago. She also said that there was a Colston Hall in Birmingham, that was owned originally by a less directly related part of the family.

As I understand it, my great grandfather, Charles Colston, moved to Warrington to work in the tin factory there. I know it was Warrington because my sister and I took my dad there after my mother died and looked up my grandparents and great grandparents in the Warrington library records. A very nice lady there showed us the census records and told us that the Edith street address that they had lived in was just down the street from one of the big tin factories of that time. She sent us there and we met the people who lived in the house. The man's parents had leased the house in 1910, the year my grandparents left for Canada, and had subsequently purchased it. My great grandfather was a master wire drawer. After he came to Canada, he worked in fine metal working and my mother said he made the andirons for Casa Loma in Toronto. My grandfather, Charles Warren, also worked in the same tin factory in Warrington the early 1900's. The tin smelting destroyed his lungs, so he was an invalid for many years, starting in about 1919.

I will try to ask among my cousins to find out if they know anything about my great uncle Joe, as the fact that this Joseph was in England in 1932, seems to be the biggest contradictory evidence. Perhaps my Uncle Charles moved to Chicago before my Great Uncle Joe. I do know that my great uncle married twice and that the second wife was in Chicago when he died, somewhere around the late 1940s, I think.

One other thin thread of evidence is this: When I was a young child, my mother got a letter from a barrister in England stating that an aunt had died without leaving a will and that mother and her siblings would each inherit a small amount (I seem to recall a figure in the 250 pound range) from her estate. I think her name might have been Butler. Mother knew who she was, but of course, had never expected to inherit anything. My parents kept this money in England with the idea of going there to visit some day, but were much too poor, so eventually spent the money.

Thank you for helping with all this.

Rhoda

Hi Rhoda,
Looking again at Wiliam Thomas Colston, and Diana Green, I'm not sure that they are the same Family.
Although they had four children, all named identically to your family, the dates and place names doesn't seem to add up.

Information I have.
W.T.Colston b: 1855 B'ham, Warwickshire.
Diana Green b: 1855, I believe B'ham.
They married in Aston, B'ham in 1876.

The four children.
Diana b:1876.Thomas b:1877.Lily b:1883.Joseph b:1887.
In 1901, with the exception of Diana and Thomas, the family were living at:no 131,Leopold St,Aston, B'ham.

Diana,------------
Thomas married a Rose H. Butler, and they were living at no 6,? Place North, B'ham.

Lily--------------

Joseph married a Rose M. Butler,( I hope this information is correct) in 1914,( once again I believe in B'ham ) they had four children,
Amy b:1915. Rosie b: 1917.John b :1921 Joseph b:1932.

As you can see by the dates,Joseph senior was shown living in England. Your information shows him moving to Chicago sometime before the 1920's.
Does any of this information tie in with yours?
Ps, are you sure of the place Warrington? could you be getting mixed up with Warwickshire?

Regards,
Reg.
Hi,
I've just read your posting of the name of Colston, The name colston was found in England in the 14th century.
Two Colston's fought at the battle of Agincourt, France in about 1323.
I myself come from a long line of Colston's, with a family tree strecthing back to 1485.
Many Colston's did emigrate to the USA,Canada, I believe also Australia. I like to think that somewhere down the line, all colston's are related.

Reg Colston.

Yes! Those are my great grandparents and the younger Diana is my grandmother. Do you have any further information about them? Here are some things I know: Diana Green Colston and William Thomas Colston lived in Warrington (then Lancastershire, now Shropshire) England at 35 Edith Street until 1905, when my mother was born. They then moved to Toronto, with the intention of my grandparents, Diana Sarah Colston Warren and Charles Warren, joining them as soon as financially able. As I recall from my mother, Great Aunt Lil and Great Uncle Joe had moved to Toronto sometime before that. I am not sure about Great Uncle Thomas, but somehow think he may also have immigrated there before that. Great Uncle Joe Colston moved to Chicago sometime before the 1920's, as I understood it. He was married twice, I think. He was in contact with my Uncle Charles, the oldest, and only, son of Diana Colston Warren and Charles Warren, who also lived in Chicago during the 1920's and maybe the 30's. I have more info on the family, if you are interested.

Thanks,
Rhoda Edens Perozzi daughter of Dora Warren Edens and Simeon Patton Edens

UPDATE: A descendant of Col. Francis Smith took the DNA test, and he did NOT match three descendants out of Alexander Smith (who had already taken the DNA test). We still apparently have no DNA donor who claims to "trace back" to the John Smith in Richmond Co., VA who married a Mary Colston/Coulson.

We know that my gg-grandfather, Smith W. "Brown," was born a Smith infant/toddler around 1817, and he was apparently taken-in by John and Mary (Bennett) Brown before 1820. Smith W. "Brown" was a "blood Smith descendant" of the above Alexander Smith.

Y-DNA Study

Are you a male with the surname of Colson/Collson/Coulson/Colston and wondered how you might be related to others with the same surname? Is your Y-DNA that of the Celts or Anglo-Saxons? Now is the perfect time to discover the origin of the DNA that makes you a male. Family Tree DNA has just announced a drastically reduced price of only $119 for the Y-DNA37 test (37 markers are required to have a thorough understanding of relatedness) and this price will remain ONLY until 31 December 2009. I paid over $249 for this same test a few years back. Don't pass up this opportunity to understand the genetic origin of your surname.
