Hi James,

Of course I remember you and its so good to hear from you again!

My son and I are well and hope you and yours are also...sorry to hear about your brother Joe.

Yes my son and his dad flew up to NY for Grandpa Colts funeral. But he had come down here in the winters and that was good that my son got to know his grandpa!

I still am researching but George O. Colt is my brick wall still!

I have found NY newspaper articles about his disappearance and death and it says the decedents father states that about 2 weeks prior to his disappearance, George fell from a wagon and hit his head....so I am thinking that he had a head injury and died from that and his father was implying that in the article but it never states his fathers name! His father also states that George was a life long resident of NYC so that helps prove his birth in NYC!

I do have several books on Samuel Colt and the few pictures there are of him well I think its uncanny of how much Michael looks like Samuel!

My email address is kidder62@yahoo.com if you would like to share more info.

Take care,
Sandy

Please write perhaps we canpick up where we left off in our search. I am willing to fun further investigation
Sincerely,
James

I have a weird twist in all this,I have a lineage with a supposed grand daughter of Samuel Colt named Martha Colt. She worked at the Armory with my Gr Grandfather William Shannon and married. Supposedly, they claimed land in Nebraska and used money from the Family Trust to make it happen. There is some old pictures rolling around in families books. But Samuel Caldwell or Caldwell Hart did not spawn, I am not sure how accurate the information is.

Hi Katherine,

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer!

I have done some research since my first original post and have learned that Samuel Colt's children didnt live long enough to have children as most died as children themselves....the one that grew to young adulthood never had any children either.

So my research moved onto Samuels brothers and that didnt help me much either....yes I did know that Samuels brother John did commit suicide in prison...his wife did have a child that was rumored to really be Samuels so I checked that out and my Colts dont fit there either!

I have gotten my sons line up to George O. Colt born about 1838 NYC, he married Frances Augusta Snow in 1855 NYC and died Dec 1869. He was reported missing and found 4 months later in the privy, dead.

Seems his father said in a newspaper report that George had fallen off a buggy abt 2 weeks prior to being missing and hit his head so assumed he must have had some kind of head injury that he died from.

I was hoping the newspaper article would state his fathers name but says "the descedants father" never stating his name!

Frances "Fanny" had 3 children with George and never remarried.

There were several Colts living in NYC in 1838 and also in 1870 that could be George's father...as Georges father also states in the article, his son was a lifelong resident of NYC....I have narrowed it down that much but not conclusive to any one person.

I have found a George W. Colt, George O. Colts son in the 1870 census living with a Theodore & Emma Colt....with the other two children Kate and Charles A.(who is my sons ancestor)living with Francis so my best guess is Theodore is George O. Colts father.

I actually have connected my surname of Kidder to Samuel Colt with a Eliza Prentiss Kidder/Benjamin Colt marriage in 1862. This Benjamin Colt is definitely connected to Samuel Colt! He is Samuels second cousin I believe...if I am remembering correctly.

Funny how I connect my surname Kidder with Samuel Colts line but my son whos surname is COLT I cannot seem to connect!!!!

George O Colt seems to be my brick wall in this line but little by little I'm breaking it down!

In my sons family line....there is family lore that there was a Colt that wanted to marry a "showgirl" but the family disapproved and he would be disinherited if he married her but he did marry her...and a grandfather as a boy remembered the well to do Colts coming and visiting a few times....so they may have disapproved but visited a few times not totally isolating him and so it could be true and it could be just a story!!!!

Thanks,
Sandy

Sandy-

I stumbled across your message board while working on an ethnography paper. My family is currently located in the Kansas City Metro area and has been in the Kansas area a while. Samuel Colt is my great great great uncle or something like that. My grandmother knows more about the history of the family than I but perhaps the little information I was sent for my paper I have will be of interest to you. This is just regarding the colt side of the family.

Three Colt brothers came from Scotland and settled in Pennsylvania. One was the ancestor of Samuel Colt, firearms. Your ancestors were farmers near Waterford, Pa., and a third brother was a circuit preacher in the Baldwin City, Ks. Area.

Mack Peter Colt was your great-great grandfather, one of eleven children who came to Kansas as a wild-cat oil man. He and a partner were successful; the partner absconded with all of the money. Granddaddy Colt didn't file for bankrupcy but paid back every creditor. He was a flamboyant man with an 8th grade education, drove Cadillacs, wore flashy diamonds and loved to play poker. He built a clubhouse for poker parties on leased land by a lake, and the owner wouldn't renew the lease. The clubhouse mysteriously burned to the ground the night before the lease was up. At the same time, he cared about the poor children and gave each in Iola, Kansas a silver dollar at Christmas through The Salvation Army.

Unfortunately, I don't know the family tree links above Mack Peter however my grandmother might.

I'm also aware that Samuel colt's brother committed suicide after being arrested for murder.

Katherine C Deckert

I just remembered something my sons father (my ex) had once told me...his grandfather had told he remembered as a boy the Colt family coming to visit them....he remembered them being well dressed and "coming from wealth."

with the family lore of being disowned by the rest of the family for marrying a show girl....at least some of the family did visit them.

whether this is just family lore or truth or part family lore and part truth....only time will tell as we uncover little by little the events of the past.

I am very fascinated with the lives that our ancestors lived...and the hard times that most seem to have lived through.

I no longer am with my sons father but my son does bear the Colt surname and the Colt blood is his heritage.....whether his Colt line ties to Samuel Colt the gun maker not as a direct descendant but somehow someway....I am not sure.....but it seems as with my Kidder line....all Kidders in America all come from the first James Kidder to America.
The former Vice President Dick Cheney is even from this James Kidder through James' daughter Dorothy and I am from James' son James.

It also seems that all Colts in America to be from the first Colt to America in some way or another.

Maybe my posts will get this board going again...hasnt been much happening for quite awhile!
oh and the "story" about Samuels brother John I so called came up with is very much true...I have read it in several books on Samuel...his personal life...not the arms dealer...and in one arms dealer book it had a small insert about it. In these articles it says the news media had a field day with the murder and trial so I know its in newspaper archives...

The child that Johns wife was pregnant with and subsequently had and named Samuel Caldwell Colt...is believed to be Samuels son and not Johns as Samuel took care of her and the child...

Samuel sent the mother Caroline Henshaw also known as Julia Leicaster and her son to Germany but when the boy was 15 sent for him to come back to the states and this child is buried with Samuel and his wife and children.

It was said that Samuel met Caroline first and had an affair with her and maybe even married her but tired of her after she was with child.

But even if he wasnt Samuels son he was still his nephew and from what the books say was known to the public as Samuels nephew.

if you havent heard about this story then you havent read many books about Samuel Colt, the man, his personal life anyways.

This child, Samuel Caldwell Colt married Mary Goodwin and had several children and lived his married life in CT but this line doesnt connect or at least the dates and places dont line up with my George Colt.

My George O. Colt being born abt. 1838 NYC and md. Frances Snow Dec 1855 in NYC...he was in the Civil War once as a private and secondly as a sargeant...Frances applied for and was granted his pension....his death certificate states he died "on the privy" 1869...newspaper articles state he was reported missing 4 months prior...in the newspaper articles Georges father states his son was a lifelong resident and fell off a wagon and hit his head two weeks prior to his being missing.

So George was born in NYC and died in NYC and was an engraver and had a business in NYC...and his father was at least in NYC in 1869/70 for the newspaper to quote him, but none of the articles ever state Georges fathers name, it has him as the decedants father. If they had just stated his name...what doors that would have opened!

Thank you for your reply!

I have discovered more on the line I'm working on since I posted that original post...who I'm really looking for is George O. Colts parents...my sons father is from this line and its family lore that this line was disenherited due to the fact that their paternal Colt ancestor married a "showgirl" and the rest of the Colt family disowned him.

I have followed this Colt line up to George O. Colt b. abt 1838 NYC and was an engraver...and thought that was interesting since John Colt, Samuels' brother was an engraver.....

George was reported missing by his wife Francis (Snow) Colt and she moved to another residence with their children not being able to afford where they had lived and some boys were playing in the yard of her old residence 4 months after she moved and they peeked into the outhouse (privy) and saw a man dead on the privy.

I have found several newspaper articles about George being reported missing and being found this way. In one of the articles it has Georges' father only listed as the deceaseds father said that George had fallen from a wagon and hit his head 2 weeks prior to his being reported missing. So George's father was in NYC too stating that his son was a life long resident...I went back trying to see what Colts were in NYC abt 1838 and there are several Colts in NYC then.

I have posted about this before but no one has replied....its also been posted that I am a fake considering my name...my maiden name IS Kidder and there is even a Colt/Kidder marriage I have found in my research that I posted about before....

The Kidder name has been researched all the way back to a Simon (Kidder)living in Lancaster Park (Ashdown Forest) Maresfield England in 1332.

Simon served as "Bayliffe" a crown office which gave him the superintendence of the forest and of its subordinate officers under the verderer, and it is believed that subsequent heads of the Kidder family became the hereditary possessors of this coveted position of honor and duties. Among the many duties attaching to it was that of safeguarding the Kings deer, particularly the young or "kid deer" with which it was well stocked and it is believed that "Simon at Hole's" duties with the respect to these fawns may have given rise to the present surname of Kidder.

Simon is also the ancestor of the first James Kidder to America from England in 1650 and my Kidder ancestor book also states that in the 1500s all persons with the last name Kidder where there in England just outside of London.
Also Margot Kidder, the actress who was in the Superman movies also comes from this same James and Simon Kidder.

Sorry to go off on a tangent of another surname on this Colt board but it really bothered me that someone was trying to call me a fraud!!!!

My Gr. Gr. Gr. Gr. Grandfather was Peter Colt (1744 - 1824). He was the brother of Benjamin Colt (1738 - ?). Benjamin married Lucretia Ely (? - 1826). Benjamin & Lucretia had a son named Christopher Colt (1780-1850), who married Sarah Caldwell (? - 1821). Christopher and Sarah were the parents of the Samuel Colt you are inquiring about. Samual Colt married Elizabeth Jarvis on May 5, 1855.

I have info tracing that line back in time further, but not forward from Samuel, which is what you are looking for. None of my records mention any children for Samuel. Going back further though, Benjamin & Peter Colt's parents were Benjamin Colt (1698 - 1754) & Miriam Harris. That Benjamin's parents were John Colt (1658 - 1750) & Sarah Lord (although I have some trees which show a MARY Lord, rather than a SARAH...) And that John's parents were John Colt(1637 - 1730) & Ann Skinner (1639 - BEF 1734).

I am looking for the parents of George O. Colt b. 1838 in NYC and died there in 1869/70. I have a copy of his death certificate and he died on the privy. I also found a newspaper article about his being reported missing by his wife, Francis "Fanny" Augusta Snow in 1870....she moved to another residence while he was missing....some boys were playing at her old residence and the outhouse...well they peeked in and saw a man....it was George O. Colt seems he was in there pretty much the whole time he was missing which was 4 months...his father was stated as saying in the article that George had been thrown from a wagon and sustained a very bad hit to the head a week before he went missing...the article doesnt list his fathers name....it just says the deseased father...but it does say he was a life long residence so I know he was born in NYC...does anyone have anything further on him?

When I was young my Grandmother had a blueprint and original Patent to a colt revolver. He cousin took them to have them documented and find information on them. She felt she had the right to have them for a while too. That was the last time we saw them. When she passed away my Grandmother asked for them back and no one seemed to be able to find them.

I was told that she came from the Odjibawa or Odjibaway Tribe. But I'm open to what ever tribe she may have come from. She may have been a Sioux Indian woman, I don't know for sure. If anyone knows about her please let me know. For years I had thought she was a Navajo Indian but now I know she came from Minnesota she wasn't.

I would be interested to hear about your research.
Cheers
Lorraine in Perth, Western Australia

Hello cousins. Although this is a collateral line of my family, I have found some confusion. George Oscar Colt married Frances Agusta Snow 31 Oct 1855 in New York City. Several of their descendants are pursuing the family lore that he is related to Samuel Colt. Christopher Colt, Samuel's father had progeny: Margaret Collier 1 Apr 1806, Sarah Ann 223 Feb 1818, John Caldwell 1 Mar 1810, Christopher 21 Mar 1812, Samuel 19 Jul 1814, James Benjamin 16 Oct 1816, Mary 30 Jun 1819, Norman Know 5 May 1821, William Upton 25 Oct 1824, Mary Lucretia 29 Jul 1826, Olivia Payne 16 Sep 1828. The confusion occurs when George Colt, son of Christopher and Theodore G. DeWolf Colt is then attributed to James Benjamin Colt, Christopher's brother who married Mary Barr Wilson on 29 Mar 1846 by mistake in the emails. It got my attention when I was connecting family trees. George is about 11 in 1860 census. He is the only possiblity. The other George Colts don't meet the marriage criteria. George is listed of NYC in "The Descendants (By The Female Line) Of Joseph Loomis" where a large amount of Colt family research is done, as well and the U.S. Census. Hopefully, this will help

John Romeo Miglietta was married prior to marrying Ethel Barrymore Colt. One marriage I am working on is to Mary Whedon Martin Edgar Gates Miglietta. The New York times ran a note about her death And that Romeo and their infant daughter were with her at the time of her death in 1913 at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in new York. Does anyone know what happen to their daughter. Was she raised by Romeo and Ethel? Or she may have been grown before he married Ethel. Does anyone know her name? Or what happened to her?

I saw your post on rootsweb. I am working on a family that connects into your line through Romeo Miglietta. And I have a big question and can find no answer. I am working on Romeo's either first or 2nd wife. Not sure how
many times he was married. Mary Whedon Martin Edgar Gates Miglietta. She died at the Ritz Carlton Hotel on Sept 20, 1913. Her obit was written up (or more like an article) was written up in the gossip page about her husband Romeo and her infant daughter being with her when she died. Did Romeo and Ethel Colt Miglietta go on to raise that daughter?

See Mary was first married to a millionaire's son Charles Gates( his dad was Bet a Million Gates), and her step father was Selwyn Edgar (a President wealthy zinc co.) So the gossip column of the Ny Times seem to keep track
of their lives. Good for my research, but sad for them. Thanks so much for your time and answer.
Re: Samual Colt's brother

Hi all,

I have been out of touch with my research for the last couple years but am getting back into it. The story I posted about Samuel Colts brother, John Colt is entirely true. I have read it in several books about Samuel Colt.

John was an engraver and was in business with another guy and the other guy and he had a falling out and John killed him and stuffed his body in a barrel. Just before John was to be hanged he married and its said that she may have slipped him something when they allowed her to visit just before the hanging. A fire broke out and when they went back to get John they found he had killed himself.....if my memory serves me right.

My ex who is the father of my son is a Colt and I was researching his Colt line....which explains my different last name and that IS my real last name and have researched Kidder all the way back to England in 1340. I have even found a Kidder/Colt marriage in the 1850s a Benjamin Colt married Eliza Prentiss Kidder she was born 6 Sep 1838 at Wakesfield, Washington Co., VT. I dont know anything about this Benjamin Colt.

I think the info that you got from someones line about George Colt is what I provided for them which is one of my ex's sisters.

I have never been able to connect George O. Colt to the actual Samuel Colt line. I do have documents on George and his wife Francis SNOW and others on down and would be happy to share them with you.

Sandy

She was pregnant and is said that the baby may have been Samuels. My husband is a descendant of Elizabeth and Fred Colt, but thats all we can find out. Please if anyone knows more, please contact me.Thanks.

Samuel Colt direct descendants

Hi,
I would like to get in touch with anyone who is a direct descendant of Samuel Colt, of the Colt revolver fame.
My husbands family is said to be of a direct line to Samuel Colt, but I can't seem to be able to connect them together yet. My husbands Colts' are mostly from in and around the New York City area, and NY is a very hard state to find info in. At least online anyway.
I have seen most of the pictures of Samuel Colt and my husband looks just like he did in his later years. The same hair, cheeks, same everything about the face and hair. If there was a way to put pictures on the message board, you could see for yourself.
Would love to hear from any one from Samuels line of Colts.

Thanks in advance.
Sandy

Samuel Colt

Hi Barbara,
Thanks for answering my message. I have done some research, and I have found out that Sams' brother John was living in NY and killied a man during an argument and was to be hanged for the murder. He was living with a women who had a baby right before the trial began and testified at his trial that she had met Sam first and then John. John, hours before he was to be hanged, married the woman and then stabbed himself to death.
The baby was a boy and named Samuel Caldwell Colt. The rumor is, that Samuel fathered the baby instead of his brother John. The rumor was never proved, but I have read that everyone pretty much believes this to be true. This "nephew" of Sams' or through another brother is how my husbands family has believed through generations to be related to this line of Colts.
I just have to do some more research and start spending money and sending away for documents from NYC.
I hope we can finally find out exactly how we are related. If you get a chance to see a picture of Samuel in his 30's or 40's before he died, you will pretty much see what my husband looks like! If you would like to email me personally, or if any other Colts' would like to, my email address is:
shstritr@aol.com.

Thanks again,
Sandy
