Coltons in Nevada

I'm looking for information on a Colton who was the treasurer of the Eureka & Palisade Railroad in the winter of 1889-90. I'm curious to find out if he is related at all to the Coltons from North Carolina who came to California and Nevada after the turn of the century. Interested because another part of my family, the Walkers, also had relations Rands who worked for the same railroad later on.

Roger Colton

I started my venture into genealogy in August 2004. I had my grandmother's family bible. She had a lot of information in there. I remembered as a child my dad talking about the "Colton" book. So I researched on the intenet and found this book could be purchased from Higginson Book Company 148 Washington St., PO Box 778, Salem MA 01970. My son got their e-mail address on the internet and ordered a copy for me for Christmas 2004. This has been a blessing. I also joined Ancestry.com. This was money well spent. They have been very helpful. If I can help you, feel free to e-mail me. Will help all I can. I also joined a genealogy society in Jacksonville, Fl. Good Luck
At the recent Death Valley [California] Forty-Niners Annual Encampment, the annual keepsake given to all members was a 40-page four-color glossy printed booklet by Marvin Jensen entitled "The Remarkable Life of 1849 Death Valley Pioneer John B. Colton", edited by Judy Bedell and Jean Pickard, copyright 2007.

It's a fascinating read about this 49er, his accomplishments and his family. It also includes biographical info about his parents Chauncey and Emily Colton of Monson, Maine.

I'd happy to mail it to the first descendant who requests it.

I am hoping by posting it here, someone will come forth with this information.

Many, or maybe all of you, are aware of the Longmeadow Historical Society website at www.longmeadow.org/hist_soc. There are many references to Coltons in the material on this site. The most fascinating is the "Olde Burying Yard" information. I was excited to find it, maybe someone else will be also! I am a descendent of Quartermaster George via Thomas, Ebenezer, Ebenezer, Melzar, Melzar and John Edmund Colton to my grandmother Hattie Jane (Colton) Coxe. I have information and pictures relating to John Edmund Colton's parents and descendents that I can share.

Hi Everyone,

I am searching for information about my ggg-grandmother. I have seen three different spellings for her first name: Maria, Mary, and Marie Colton. She married Marcus R. Griswold (supposedly of N. Wilbraham-can't confirm yet) and they went on to have 4 children: Charles, Jane Marie, George and Frank- all born in Sheffield, MA. I do not know when she married Marcus or where. Nor do I know her date of birth but suspect is was between 1820-1830ish as her daughter was born in 1847. Any help/advice/leads would be so greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!!

Warmly,
Terri Lee

I received your e-mail today. I sent to e-mails. I received a query from Ancestry.com a query you sent concerning Colton-Allen dated 11/17/2001 6:39Am GMT. You said you had the Quartmaster George Colton Book which was published about 1913-my uncle Emery Royal Colton Was a child and was listed as part of the last generation in the book. You said you could provide me with his parents info and each generation back to Quartermaster George in 1620.
I would like to Chave a copy of the information from my Uncle Emery Royal back to Quartermaster George Colton. My dad was Rexford Selden Colton. He was forn after Uncle 'Emery. There was also another son Howell Ray. Do you have any information on where my grandfather Andrew Myron was taken prisoner. I know he was taken to Andersonville prison in Georgia. I have just recently gotten into geneology and I find it fasinating. Thanks for any information you can give me
Rexene J Colton Henry
Rjeanhenry&netscape.net
Colton/Hunkins/Bromley photographs from Minnesota

Shelley Cardiels has "rescued" two old photographs, both taken at the E. H. Austin Studio in Austin, Minnesota. The first is a photograph of Aunt Lois COLTON BROMLEY. The second photograph is identified as Aunt Lottie COLTON HUNKINS. The photographs appear to have been taken in the 1890's with Lois appearing to be in her 40's and Lottie in her 20's or 30's. Based on limited research, Shelley knows that Lottie COLTON married Adelbert Ben HUNKINS on the 3rd of Sept 1890 at Austin, MN.

She is hoping to locate someone from the family, so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact Shelley at
cardiels at comcast dot net substituting "@" for " at " and "." for " dot ".

Hi! My mom recently ran into a Colton relative by chance--she works at a hospital. He copied some parts of the book of my line. My line stops at Byron Colton--apparently, information was not given to the publishers and submitted to the book for printing. Are there ways to "update" the book so that more information is on record in the book?

My great-grandmother was Rita Colton. She was born around 1894 or 1895 in Grove, Allegany County, NY. Her mother's name was Mary. Rita married Abraham Parker. I'm looking for a connection to Alonzo B. Colton who was born in 1/6/1823,married Martha Swift in New Hudson, Allegany Co. NY in 1844. I only know of one child who was born in Grove in 1868 and believe there were others and that this family is connected to my great-grandmother. Any information out there on this branch would be greatly appreciated.

Update on message#48

I have found all the names of the Coltons in The Civil War that I was aware of-- Henry Hartwell Colton, Franklin Colton and Luther Colton. All three men died during the War. There were seven younger siblings and the matriarch, Roxie Jane Hamblin Colton, at home when Henry died, the last of the three. I have gotten quite a lot of information on these men while in the War. But I would like to know if anyone out there is also related to this family. I am looking to see if Henry's diaries are in his descendants hands somewhere. There were three years worth that I am aware of.

Luther Colton had a sister that is my Great Grandmother, Ida May Colton; she married Efford Holland Smith. Luther's wife Roxie died in 1899, I believe that she was 99 when she died. There are seven more of her children that I am unaware of. This part of the Colton family is from St Lawrence Co NY; DeKalb to be more specific. Ida and Luther's parents were Roselle and Elizabeth Briggs Colton, I think they came to NY from Vermont.

If anyone knows of these children or of this branch of the Colton's; please reply to Jennie_semo@hotmail.com

Thank you,
Jennie

It has been so long ago I had forgotten about it. I was surfing the internet and come upon your query and also a query from Lori Ann Clifton.
What is your connection to Uncle Emery.
Sarah Colton/Samuel Graves

I thought that Sarah COLTON was my ancestor until I started looking more closely at my database. Now I see that Sarah COLTON is shown in different books and web pages as having been married to different Samuel GRAVES. One Samuel, born about 1655, was the son of Isaac. The other, born about 1657, was the son of John. Does anyone have any "proof" showing which Samuel Sarah was really married to?

Thank you - Linda elldabee@prodigy.net

David Colton's children

My great-grandmother was Carrie Colton, born 7 Mar. 1860 Oswego Falls, Oswego Co., NY, died 1 Dec. 1825 Fulton, NY. She was the dau. of David Colton, dates unknown but est. born around 1840, and Mary Snow, born c. 1842 . Recently was told by Aunt that Carrie had one brother, name unknown, who "went West' and was never heard from again. Carrie married William Francis Stewart of Town of Granby on 26 Apr. 1883. Does anyone have info on David and Mary Colton's place and dates of birth, death, etc.? Mary was the dau. of Simon Snow and Caroline Dunbar of town of Volney, Oswego Co., NY. Unless David married more than once, this is not David Horace Colton. Thankful for any help, Sally L.
