Linda -
I have been searching this family, too. George W. Columbia was my gr-gr-grandfather. To the best I can determine, he was married three times and had three families.
Hiram was born to his first wife Susan McGraw, and that is the same person you see in the 1900 census. Germantown, Murphysville, and Augusta are all within about ten miles of each other, in western Mason and eastern Bracken Counties. My grandfather always referred to this person as "Harm Columbia." No idea where he is buried.
George Columbia is buried in the Paris Cemetery in Bourbon Co., Kentucky. He died Dec. 31, 1917. At the time, he lived in Centerville in Bourbon Co. His tombstone lists his birthdate as 1822, but that doesn't seem to match up with the census ages. My great-grandfather Charles D. Columbia (George's son) is buried next to him.
My grandfather told me once that his grandfather George killed a man over a dispute about the location of a line fence, and to get out of the trouble he joined the army (Union?) and fought in the Civil War. I have no verification of that.
Susan died between the 1860 and 1870 census (don't know where she is buried), and George married Martha Tucker, who is supposed to be buried in the Cane Ridge Cemetery in Bourbon County (I have not verified this).
My grandfather also thought that George might have had a brother Thomas.
George was supposed to have married a third time, to a woman named Thomas (could have been her married name) who had many children from a previous marriage.
I have never been able to trace this Columbia line back beyond George. There was a Louis de la Colombe who fought in the Revolution and changed his name to Lewis Columbia when he later settled in Athens, Ohio, but I have pretty much ruled out any connection (even though he did have a grandson named George Columbia). Most of the Columbia family settled in Bourbon or Woodford County, Kentucky - on a line from Miday to Paris to North Middletown, and on across to Mt. Sterling, in Montgomery County.
I am a lifelong resident of Mason County, but through my mother's family - I was kind of shocked to find that the Columbia's were here so early. The local records are very scarce on that name.
