I have to believe that this must be a son of Louis-Ange de la Colombe, a French nobleman who came to America with the Marquis de Lafayette aboard La Victoire to fight in the American Revolution. It would make perfect sense that he would name his son after George Washington because Colombe served as an aid to Lafayette during the Revolutionary War. Colombe changed his name to Columbia in c. 1815. There is a DAR record of this man.

I wish I had some information. I, too, have been searching for information verifying his existence and any related details. Was this Margaret Columbia the daughter of (Phillipe) Louis and Margaret [Moor] de la Colombe/Columbia?

Louis Columbia was the French nobleman who came to the US with Lafayette and served in the American Revolution. He later married Margaret Moor Ranstead in Boston, they later moved to Amesville, Athens County Ohio

From what I have been able to find - mostly from internet research - they had six children - Elizabeth Brown, Dana, Sally, Margaret, John (my line) and Lewis.

I do not have a lot of good source material to back this info up, but I did find birth information of 22 Jan 1799, MA - for Margaret.

Leuie (Louis) Columbia -- From Massachusetts to Ohio

Only one family of the surname Columbia is listed on the 1800 and 1810 US Censuses. They are living in Dedham, Norfolk, Massacchusetts.

The following book has interesting information about the Columbia family who moved from Massachusetts to Ohio: "History of the Robbins family of Walpole, Massachusetts; descendants of William and Priscilla Robbins. Loveland, Utah Salt Lake City, Utah: O.B. Robbins; Robbins Genealogical Society, 1949". (Sally Columbia married Joseph Robbins.)

Pg 58 of Robbins book.
"Sally (Columbia) Robbins began a Robbins family record in a book about 6 1/2 by 8 inches in size, well bound in paste board covers. This book was later kept up to date by various members of the family."

Pg 59 of Robbins book.
".... In this book she also entered some records of the Columbia family and a sketch of the life of her father, Leuie Columbia -- a Frenchman, who was brought to America by his foster father at the age of six."

"(a) From 'Record of Leuie Columbia and his Descendents' by Sally (Columbia) Robbins, in the Robbins family record book, which was begun by her."

"(a) Record book begun by Sally (Columbia) Robbins presented to New England Historic-Genealogical Society 1939. -- With notes on genealogy of Columbia family."

Pg 60 of Robbins book:
"Leuie (named Louis by his father, changed by his adopted father to Leuie) Columbia was born in France, June 13, 1769. He came to America with his adopted father in 1775. The vesssel was taken by the English and carried to Halifax. In 1776 or 1777 the vessel was redeemed and brought into Boston.

He came with the crew into Boston, where he lived until 1785 when he went to Danvers and served an apprenticeship at shoemaking. He returned to Boston in 1790. He married Margaret Moore Ransted, the youngest daughter of John and Elizabeth Ransted of Boston. In 1792 he moved to Drochester with his wife and child. In 1799 he moved to Dedham with his wife and five children. In 1815 he moved to Amesville, Ohio, with his wife and youngest son and daughter; where he died Aug 25, 1825 aged 56 years 1 month and 23 days. His wife Margaret died in Fort Wayne Feb 27, 1837 aged 70 years 2 months and 21 days. (a)"

"Shortly after the marriage of Joseph Robbins and Sally Columbia, the latter's family removed to Ohio from Dedham. A number of letters written during the following years have been preserved, the first and one of the most interesting being as follows:

Dear Sisters I sit down with great pleasure to write to you and inform you of my situation after crossing the Allegany Mountains, it being very tiresome. Mother has been better since she's been on her journey than she has been for seven years. I hope you are all in good health. Marietta seems more like home than any place that ever I was in. We came down from Pittsburgh in a large flat bottom boat without Sails or to row, distance one Hundred Sixty miles in three Days. Mrs. Robbins I wish to give you my love and respects to Mr. Robbins Mother and sisters and also to Mr. Nasons family, to Leonard and Lucy in particular and every inquiring friend of mine. Tell Mrs. Draper that I have got an Article of hers which I suppose she laments the loss of. I did not know I had it with me till I arrived in Marietta. Dear Brothers and Sisters we all arrived safe and well in this western world. We all enjoy perfect health. I hope to hear the same from you all.

Looking for information on Margaret "Peggy" Columbia.

MARGARET COLUMBIA She was born 1799 in MA. Residence 1850 in District 2, Boone Co., KY. She died Aft. 1850.

In 1818 in Aames, Athens Co., Ohio she married JONATHAN MOREY, the son of Silas Morey & Elizabeth Benson. He was born 1789 in NY. He died Aft. 1850.

They had 5 children.
i. CHARLES FRANCIS MARION MOREY. He was born on 25 Jun 1838 in Muskingum Co., Oh. He married Rachel A. Hopkins on 18 Aug 1861. He died Aft. 1887. Burial in Bethel Cemetary, Yale Grandville, Jasper Co., IL.
ii. LOUISA MOREY born 1835 in OH. She died Aft. 1850.
iii. EMMA A MOREY born 1841 in OH. She died Aft. 1850.
iv. WARREN MOREY born Bet. 1820-1830 in OH.

WRECK ON THE FRISCO

Five Persons Killed and a Number Seriously Injured. (only four of the dead were listed)

Kansas City: As a result of a broken rail train No. 103 of the Frisco System was derailed bear Everton, Missouri, and five persons were killed and a number of others seriously injured. The engine, baggage and mail cars went into the ditch and were badly damaged. The dead are E. R. Mead, engineer, Fort Scott, Kansas; Bert Coffman, fireman, Fort Scott, Kansas; C. B. Campbell, postal clerk and L. C. Colman, mail clerk, both of Kansas City. Clyde Wilkins, postal clerk and Louis Columbia were seriously injured and the recovery of both is doubtful. Engineer Mead was on of the oldest men in the Frisco services.

Just in response, Peter Glode & Alvina Columbia are my great grandparents. Julia Mae (Glode) Cramer was my grandmother. I really don't have much information regarding Peter & Alvina but I can tell you that Peter was born in Nicholett Canada. I was told that Alvina was only 12 years old when she married Peter & I have her wedding band which barely fits on the tip of my baby finger.
I have just begun searching myself in an effort to find our Native American roots.

My 7th generation gr-grandfather was Louis Columbia. He settled in Ames, Athens County, Ohio, which I believe is fairly close to the counties you refer to here.

He settled in Athens County about 1815, and died there in 1825. He was married to Margaret More Ransted, and they had six children.

I have some information about him, but he has been a hard one to research.

If you could tell me the surnames or the Columbia's you are researching, I can check to see if they were connected to my gr-grandparents.

Hi Michelle.
I too am researching the Columbia line.
My great-grandfather was Joseph Columbia, he was born in Nebraska and married Elizabeth Cantrell. They moved to Colorado around 1885 and spent their lives here. They both died in the early 1940's and are buried in Gunnison, CO.

I believe from what I have been able to find, that we are decended from Phillipe de la Columbe and Margaret More Ranstead. He was a Revolutionary War soldier. Phillipe was born in France. He changed the family name to Columbia.

This has been a hard surname to research. It is nice to find someone who is interested in keeping this research going. I have not been very successful in finding other Columbia decendants.
I would like to hear from you.

Hi Sherril,

My Columbia family came down from Canada to New Hampshire. The oldest folks I could find were Vasa and Rosette Columbia in the 1850 census. (Columbe is the French Spelling).

I did see a # of Columbia's scattered across the country. If you need a look-up in the census on a Columbia please let me know. Put Columbia Look-up in the subject line and I will be happy to try to find them.

The Columbia board seems small, I am happy to see other's out here posting!

Hi all fellow Columbia descendents
I am posting here because I want to make sure this board stays alive. I have searched through census records for hours, i have searched even searched in no where's land for the Columbia family. I have searched SSDI and have a couple of Columbia's there I can't fit in. I actually found dates and people on LDS.

I found on lds Alvina Columbe m. Peter Hades.........yeah you go figure! My point is Columbe........that would be French for Columbia. Even if I search Google it wants to turn Columbe into Columbia! I believe this is the real family name. I plan to make a library trip this week to find all I can find on Columbia or Columbe......I will search through all the books and towns I know where they exist.

I pray.......I can find Vasa and Rosette in Canada......I am not used to searching out of usa........my heart is in this. I don't give up.

Hi I found in the 1900 census, Canaan NH a Peter Glode b. 1838. He was Widowed at this time, he has children.
Walter Margaret Nettie Freddie Julia Charlie Evelyn and also living with him is my 3rd Great Grandmother.....his mother in law Sophia Columbia b 1831 Canada.

I am curious if any of these names of the children ring a bell.

The Canaan, NH town history lists several Columbia families. Is she related to Nehemiah Columbia from Three Rivers/Trois Rivieres, PQ, Canada?

Your Family and mine probably have the same roots. My late dad (Richard W. Columbia) did quite a bit of research in Vt. He has the "Columbia 17" going back to Nehemiah Columbia with a belief of a tie in of :Vasa Columbia of "Three Rivers Canada"
I only have a limited family tree on the Columbia side. My dad's mothers side is quite extensive. It goes back to John Doan of Wales west of England.

Looking for information on Lewis and Clara Columbia both born in Canada. They had five children that I know of: James, Lucy J., Francis, Lizzie and Charles.
Lewis was born about 1825 and Clara was born about 1840.
Lucy J. Columbia was my GG Grandmother- she was born on Aug 3, 1863 in Canaan, NH and died 12 Feb 1919 in Plymouth, NH

My GGgrandmother was Jane/Jennie Columbia b. 4/1856, daughter of Mirtie/Minty/ ect possibly Martin? b. 1816 Canada. His wife is Sophia, and they had 11 children 9 living from the 1900 census.

I hope if we can put heads together we may find something!

I have no other info on Jane/Jennie Columbia. I do know that in the 1920 Ma census she was living with her husband Frank Julian in Milford MA. On the census it lists her name as Jennie. If you have any info on a Jane/Jennie in your tree it sure would be appreciated.
