Carol,
I saw your message to Heather re: James P. Colvard, etc.

I am also researching Colvard families of western NC. Although I go by the name Colbert, my ancestors answered to Calvert,
Colvard, and Colbert.

Also, I had my DNA checked with Family Tree several years ago, and it matched the family of William Pleasants Colvard and his son Wade Hampton Colvard, b. 1812. This is not the same family as Wade Hampton Colvard, b. 1805 who married
Phoebe Vannoy.

However, there is possibility the two families came from the same family tree.

I can trace my roots to Thomas Colvard of Halifax and Franklin counties, NC. Between 1758 and 1768 he lived in the town of Halifax, NC and operated a blacksmith shop and an Ordinary (tavern).

In 1768 he moved west to Bute County, NC and did the same thing. At this time no one knows how many children he had.
The only person I can vouch for is my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard/Colbert of Franklin Co. NC.

Richard

Hello,
My family has gone by the names Calvert, Colvard, and Colbert.
Several years ago I took a DNA test and found relatives in western NC with matching DNA.

This family belonged to William Pleasants Colvard and his son Wade Hampton Colvard, b. 1812. William Pleasants Colvard was married to Rebecca Davis.

In the early 1800's the family moved to Hardemann Co., TN along with several other families from Rutherford Co -- Gage, Riggs (Ricks), Ross, and Cody.

In 1830, Wade Hampton Colvard married Latha Gage and his sisters married into the Riggs, Ross, and Cody families.

Does this sound familiar?
Re: John Stokley Colvard

Hello,
I think it's possible my 4th GG Thomas Colvard was the father of John Stokley Colvard. Thomas was born ca. 1720 and died in 1785 in Franklin Co., NC. The executrix of his estate was Sarah Calbert/Colvard and Colonel Nicholas Long paid the surety for his estate.

I say possibility because I don't know how many sons and daughters Thomas had. I only know of one, my 3rd GG who was also named Thomas Colvard. He was born ca. 1770 and died in 1846 in Franklin Co., NC. Thomas is listed in the 1790 Franklin Co. NC census as Thomas Colbert, single. He married
Vashti Pinnell ca. 1797 and had four children: Alethia, Hicksey, Ira Joe, and John Pinnell. Ira Joe was my 2nd GG.

My 4th GG Thomas was born on Plumtree Island which is now called Mush Island and is on the Roanoke River next to the town of Weldon, NC. His father was named Joseph. Between 1758 and 1768 he lived in the town of Halifax and was a blacksmith and owned a tavern. Then, in 1768 he moved west to Bute (now Franklin and Warren) County.

Also living in Bute Co., NC was John Stokley. He is listed as paying taxes there in 1771. And in 1787 he bought a horse in Bute/Warren County and moved away to parts unknown.

It is possible one of John Stokley's daughters married another son of Thomas that I am unaware of and moved away from Bute Co. with John Stokley in 1787. (Remember, my Thomas died in 1785).

There is another link which may be significant. I believe, but can't prove, that my 8th GG was Christopher Calvert of Accomack Co., VA. He was transported to America in 1636 by William Bibby. Christopher lived near Edmund Bibby (son of William) and John Pannell (Pinnell) who arrived in Accomack Co. in 1646.

The descendants of Edmund Bibby and John Pinnell live in Franklin Co., NC and have lived together for over 375 years.
My 3rd GG Thomas Colvard/Colbert married Vashti Pinnell, dau. of John Pinnell/Pannell. The three families still live within two miles of each other today.

There was another person who lived in Accomack County in the 1600's. His name was John Stokley. He had a daughter named
Elizabeth who married John Bowen and he also had four or five sons -- some of the names were William, Woodson, and John. I can't remember the other names off hand.

So, it's possible that the descendants of the Stokley's and Calvert's of Accomack Co. ended up in Bute Co. in the 1770's.

Several members of my family have taken DNA tests and I have the same DNA as my cousin Pete Colbert in Franklin Co. However, I also have the same DNA as Herman Colvard of OK and Donald Colvard of AL. They traced their families to western NC in the late 1700's. The Colvard's then moved to
Hardemann Co., TN in the early 1800's.

Have you had your DNA tested? If it's the same as ours, then there is possibility that we are all related to the same family tree.

Richard Allen Colbert

Re: John Stokley Colvard

Brittney,
There is a possibility that John Stokley Colvard was the son of my 4th GG Thomas Colvard of Halifax and Bute (now Franklin) counties in NC.

I say possibiity because as far as I know records show he only had one son, my 3rd GG Thomas Colvard/Colbert.

However, "a" John Stokley lived in Bute County, NC in 1771 the same time my 4th GG Thomas lived there, and in 1787 John Stokley bought a horse in Bute/Warren County, NC and moved.

My 4th GG Thomas died in 1785.

There are also some other ties going back to the mid 1600's in Accomack County, VA. I believe, but can't prove, that my 8th GG was Christopher Calvert. He was transported to Accomack Co. in 1636 by William Bibby.

The families of William Bibby, Christopher Calvert, and John Pannell (variant spellings) have been very close since arriving in America in the early 1600's. These three families still live in Franklin Co., NC and have lived together for over 375 years. My 3rd GG Thomas Colvard/Colbert married Vashti Pinnell (Pannell), daughter of John Pinnell.

There were three other families that also lived in Accomack Co. in the 1600's: John Stokley, John Robins, and John Bowen. John Robins was the brother of Obedience Robins. He was one of the Commissioners of Accomack Co. and the grandfather of Thomas Robins II. John Stokley was a large farmer in Accomack Co. and transported John Bowen to America ca. 1649 (I might be off on date). John Bowen worked for Stokley as an indentured servant, but after his apprenticeship married Elizabeth Stokley, dau. of John.

Christopher Calvert bought land from the Robins family and lived on land that is now the town of Onancock off Calvert's Neck.

John Stokely and John Robins were among the first to buy land on Chincoteague Island. This island has become famous because every year residence of Chincoteague Island have a horse roundup and have the wild horses on the island swim across the bay to the mainland.

When John Stokley died I think he had four or five sons. John Stokley of Bute/Warren County, NC might be one of his descendants. If so, maybe one of my 4th GG Thomas Colvard's unaccounted sons was the father of John Stokley Colvard.
Richard A. Colbert
Hello Eric,
Just found your message from 2006. I hope you get this. I am Stephen Colvard, gggrandson of Benjamin Davis colvard and Molly Dalton. Benjamin Davis Colvard's son Loyd Colvard m. to Emaline Mira Underwood, is my ggrandfather. His son, Loyd Davis Colvard is my grandfather. I have some information on Wade Hampton and Latha Colvard, but would love anything you can tell me about Wade Hampton or "Uncle Jerry". If you want any info on Loyd and Emaline Colvard (Benjamin Davis' son) I can send it to you. If you can tell me what you have for Wade's father or gfather or as far back as you can go, I would appreciate it. This is a California cousin.

Thanks,
Steve

We have heard the family stories from our mother Ruth Colvard and visited Prairie Grove battlefield where Jeremiah lost his leg. I have a little info provided by the curator there. We also visited his grave in Charleston. I would LOVE to have any additional info and pictures!

Benjamin Davis Colvard B: 1841 Arkansas

I am looking for information, particularly military service information, on Benjamin Davis Colvard. Benjamin is the son of Wade Hampton Colvard and Latha Ann Gage. He served in the Confederate Army during the civil war, and I am trying to track down which unit he was in. I have a pension record to show that a B.D. Colvard (2nd Lieutenant) served in the 5th Arkansas Infantry Co. A, and I know that his brother (Jeremiah "Jerry" Colvard) served in that regiment, but I am looking for confirmation due to the number of Benjamin Colvards listed in muster rolls. Any and all information is appreciated. I would like to collect any information, records, and stories from the children of Wade Hampton Colvard and Latha Gage.

I also have a biographical sketch on Jeremiah Colvard to send if anyone is interested.

Eric Lafferty - Toledo, Ohio

Hi Heather, I was in Washington DC last week and I visited the DAR Headquarters there. I am researching a 4th Great Grandfather, Jesse Ray, who was a patriot fighting in the Rev. War. I was searching their data base of other members that are related to Jesse Ray & I found your grandmother's application noticing many of my "Colvard" ancestors. I printed out your grandmother Fetzer's application so I could have the information for my research. I have that data and it shows her (& your) lineage going back to 1760. Please contact me at clbadge@aol.com so I can get this information to you. Thanks & Good Luck

I do know that some of the Colvards went to Ashe Co., NC & there may still be some there.

Wade Hampton COLVARD was the brother to Jennie COLVARD who married Owen MERRIMAN [Bill's line]. The parents were William COLVARD & Rachel BERRY; parents of William COLVARD were William COLVARD & Mercy HOLLAND; parents of William COLVARD were William CALVERT of VA & Temperance [some say her maiden name may have been BUTTERWORTH] who married an EASELY/EASELEY after the death of her husband William. The family is fun to try & figure out going back because they all named their children after family members as was the custom then. Will share info.

Robbie, I would be interested in the information you spoke of on Colvard genealogy. I believe that I descend from William and Rachel Berry but am not sure of his children nor his correct parentage. My known ancestor was Rebekah Colvard that married John Hopkins in Surry Co., N.C. in 1809.

William Colvard/Rachel Berry

I believe I desend from this couple but can't find the definitive proof. I have seen William listed in Surry Co. with one group of children and have seen him in next door Wilkes Co. with a slightly different group. I have also seen different parents for William. Can somebody clue me in? My ancestor was Rebekah Colvard who married John Hopkins in Surry Co., N.C. in 1809. Later moved to Weakley Co., TN. Right time and place but would like some proof.

Mahala Mae and Nola Adis West married Colvard brothers, San Juan Reneau Jr and Decatur Colvard, respectively. Sanie Jr. and Mahala had two daughters, Pauline and Bertha Jane. Both of them married brothers. Bertha Jane married Oan Fred Day in Taloga, OK in 1930. I do not remember the other Day brother's name - Nola Adis' husband.

It is known that in years past, the above names were sometimes used interchangeably. In order to sort out the various family lines, there is a DNA testing project ongoing.
If anyone is interested in joining this effort, please contact me.
Thanks.
Larry
