Nearly all Colver/Culvers in the U.S. are decendants of the Puritan father Edward Colver 1600 or 1610-1685.

If you work your husband's ancestry backwards that is most likely what you will find.

Do a Google search and there will be tons of information on the Colver-Culvers.
Sorry this reply is not concerning the above family but instead is with regards to Gertrude Rhoda Bello/Bowerman. Her son John William Jacob Bowerman is of importance and I would appreciate being able to discuss with you.

You won't really find much in the way of hard evidence. Such evidence as exists comes from a family Bible once in the possession of a New York branch of Culvers, but the Bible entries themselves are some two or three generations removed from the actual event.

The Culvers insist the wedding happened, the Winthrops tell the Culvers what to go do with themselves. The Culver side, of course, wants very much for there to be a connection with the Winthrops (who wouldn't want Governor Winthrop in their direct line?). The Winthrops, for their part, want nothing to do with the Culvers, though they haven't produced any solid evidence (like, say, proof that Mary married someone else) disproving it, either.

And who could blame them for wanting to distance themselves? That particular John came came from a family much given to abberrant religious fervency -- preaching the end of the world, disrupting established-church services in the nude, and the like -- so the idea of a genteel young Massachussetts blueblood girl running off with the likes of *him* does seem rather far fetched.

The dispute is one that crops up with some regularity in Colver-Culver genealogy. Two centuries of Winthrop-Culver bickering haven't settle the question, and two more centuries are just as unlikely to.

My own personal opinion is -- who knows? I guess the question is kept in play on the Culver side more out of a desire to find a connection than from the strength of evidence. Doesn't make the Culver side wrong, however.

--Nathanael

Don't know how to post these photo's online as I'm no longer paying for my Ancestry.com membership but if you want a digital copy, write to my e-mail address with your e-mail and I'll send them along.

Nelson Collver is a descendant of Jabez Culver/Collver. Jabez & most of his descendents changed the spelling of their surname to Collver from Culver. However in census and other documents it may still be recorded as Culver. It is impossible to sort out who did what. Some of them were also not very literate which complicates the issue further. In searching for Collver or Culver try both spellings. It is even spelled Colver sometimes. I am disappointed that I never got a reply about the photos of Nelson Collver's wife, Sarah Young & her daughter etc. I hope some Collver got them and shares them.
I am curious about your connection to the following folks. "Fiddyment" is the married name of Jennie Collver who married William Fiddyment (children=Hazel, Harold, & Zelma Fiddyment). Jennie Collver's father, James S. Collver was a brother to my grt grandmother, Louesa Jane Collver. Their parents were Hiram E. Collver & Sarah Ann Stokes.

Swisher.

I do have a bit more, and might find out more on Henry T. Swisher. Check out my reply to Sandi - not sure if you'll get notified since it wasn't a reply to you.

I'd still like to figure out if Henry died in Bureau Co. IL or Lancaster Co. NE. I'm searching for an obit for him - which will certainly solve the mystery.

dorrie

Sandi,
We did communicate several years ago on Eliza Jane Colver and Henry T. Swisher. I just wanted to make sure that you know you have a typo in his age. His stone reads:
Henry T. Swisher
d. Sept. 27, 1872
age 36 yrs. 11ms. 27 days
---------
I'm trying to figure out if he died in Bureau Co. or if he died in Stevens Creek, Lancaster Co. NE (and Eliza brought his body back to be buried in the Colver family plot). They are there with Henry's brother Daniel M. Swisher in the 1870 census, and Eliza Jane's uncle William Colver (brother of Eliza's father Jacob Colver) and first cousin Jacob Henry Colver (the son of William Colver).

1870 Census Lincoln, Lancaster Co., NE
Swisher, Henry T, 34, PA
Eliza J. 25, PA
next door to:
Colver, Jacob H. 30, PA
Margaret, 31, PA
Anneta, 6, PA
Sarah E, 4, IL
Ira A. 2, IL
William 2/12, IL

1870 NE State Census - Stevens Creek, Lancaster Co. NE
Daniel Swisher, Frostburg, Jefferson Co. PA
Carrie H. Swisher, "
Abba H. Swisher, "
Henry T. Swisher, Luis, Jefferson, PA
Eliza J. Swisher, Allen, Liehoh?, PA, (maiden name) Colver
same page:
H McKee, Barakitte, Jefferson Co. PA
CJ McKee, Perryville, Jefferson Co. PA
(Note: bad spelling, but Henry T. Swisher was born in Lewistown, Mufflin Co. PA, and as you know, Eliza Jane was born in Allentown, Lehigh Co. PA. They must have left off the "town.")

1870 Lancaster Co. Agriculture Schedule
Swisher, Henry T.
Acres Improved: 20, Acres Unimproved 60
Value: Farm $1200, Other $50
Wages paid: $20
Horses: 2, Cows: 2, Value: $250
No crops
On same schedule: Daniel Swisher, Jacob H. Colver, Vanburen Miller, and William Colver

I also have quite a bit on Berean Cemetery, and actually did a binder for the Bureau Co. Gen. Society on the cemetery. My connection is the McKee family, and my Uncle Dale McKee is caretaker of the cemetery. I'm planning a fall trip to Lehigh Co. PA to find more on my McKee family and may discover more on the Colver family as they migrated together.

Here is a bit more I've found on the Swisher family (I also have a photo of Henry's parents Daniel & Elizabeth (Matthews) Swisher if you are interested).

Daniel was a veteran of the War of 1812, and served with Oliver Hazard Perry. Daniel was an early settler of Frostburg in Perry Township, Jefferson Co. PA. The township was named for Oliver Hazard Perry of War of 1812 fame (Battle of Lake Erie). Here is an obit I found:

The Indiana Democrat (Indiana, PA), November 2, 1871, pg 3, col 2
Another Hero of the War of 1812 Gone.
Mr. Daniel Swisher, who was perhaps the last survivor of the battle of Lake Erie, Sept. 10, 1813, died at his residence in Perry township, Jefferson county, on Tuesday, October 10th, age 72 years, 6 months and 14 days. At the time of the engagement, Mr. S. was a volunteer on the Caledonia. He emigrated to this part of the State many years ago, and in the community in which the greater part of his long life was spent, he was looked up to as a father, friend and counsellor. The church (Methodist) of which he was a member, has lost a pillar, and a bright example. —Plaindealer.

Daniel Swisher died 10 Oct 1871 and is buried at the Hopewell Methodist Church Cemetery. I found this on the church:

Jefferson County, PA: her pioneers and people, 1800-1915, pg. 312
Hopewell M.E. Church
"Hopewell," on the Ringgold charge, was organized in 1839, by Revs. R. Peck adn Mr. Heinelaugh. The pioneer class consisted of Daniel Swisher, Elijah Swisher, Lizzie Swisher, Adam DeHaven, C. DeHaven, Joseph Elder, Elizabeth Martin, Henry Palmer and Barbara Palmer. Daniel Swisher was the pioneer class leader. The pioneer church was built in 1840, and was a commodious log structure thirty-two by twenty-eight. Rev. McVey Troy was then pastor.

In 1886 a new church was erected, now Frostburg. Pastors: Rev. W. J. Barton, 1886-88; J. E. Brown, 1889-90; John Frampton, 1891-95; C.J. Zetler, 1896-99; W.O. Calhoun, 1900.

Valier, the same appointments as Frostburg from 1886.
============

I just made contact with a descendant of Daniel Swisher - so I'll let you know if I find out more. Sorry, I don't know anything about a Jacob Swisher. Was he from Jefferson Co. PA?

dorrie

Henry T. Swisher is buried in the plot with Eliza Colver's parents, Jacob & Mary Anna Hoffman Colver in the Berea rural cemetery which was severely vandalized several years ago. I have the site of his grave as "Row 25 (south & west side) with date of death Sept 27,1872 age 86 yrs 11 mon 27 days". We have taken photos there before & after the vandalism. The Bureau Co. Geneology Society in Princeton, IL has much info concerning this cemetery. Eliza J. Colver married 2nd Ethan Jackson & is buried in the cemetery in Chatsworth, Livingston Co. IL with Ethan & his first wife. Eliza's sister, Ellen Colver Edwards, was my great grandmother--Jacob & Mary Anna Colver my great, great grand-parents. Would be interested in more info on Henry T. Swisher as my husband's grandfather was Jacob Swisher of the same area. Sandi McGinnis

OBIT Sarah Colver Hensel, New Philadelphia, OH, 12-29-1887

The Ohio Democrat
New Philadelphia, Ohio
December 29, 1887

Mrs. Sarah Hensel, died December 24, 1887, at her residence on West High street, New Philadelphia. Deceased, whose maiden name was Colver, was born in this county Nov. 17, 1812. She was married to Dr. John Eckman, Oct. 31, 1831, who died June 23, 1840. She was again married to John Hensel, Feb. 18, 1857, who died May 13, 1870. Her only child, a daughter, E.A. Eckman, died July, 1844. A childless widow, she adopted Miss Sadie Forney, now Mrs. Calvin Milay, and with her spent the remainder of her days. In her usual health and spirits, she was about the house on Saturday morning last, when suddenly the summons came for her to leave for that "undeiscovered country from whose hoarne no traveler ere returns." The deceased was a pioneer member of the M.E. church.

WHICH Ephraim did Hannah Mason marry?

Too many Ephraims! I'm looking at the line descended from Edward, Jr., as follows:

1. Edward & Ann Ellis
2. Edward & Sarah Backus
3. Ephraim Sr. b. 1683
4. Ephraim Jr. b. 1717
5. Ephraim III b. 1743

I'm trying to sort out which Ephraim married Hannah Mason. Frederic Lathrop Colver (p. 66) makes her the wife of Ephraim Jr., as does Valerie Dyer Giorgi on p. 44. However, on pp 33- 34 of her book, Valerie says Ephraim Sr. m. (2) Hannah Mason.

Searches at Ancestry don't clarify anything. Some results attach her to Ephraim Sr., despite the age difference (Hannah's DOB was 1719/20); others attach her to Edward Jr.

Connecticut Town Marriages, pre-1870 (The Barbour Collection) show Hannah marrying Ephraim on 24 Jan 1739; while those records don't specify Ephraim's parents, this would have to be Ephraim Jr., as Ephraim Sr. died in 1729.

My working hypothesis is that Valerie's entry on pp 34-35 should just be considered an error, and that entries at Ancestry.com that follow suit probably just source back to Valerie's book.

Can anyone help here?

--CJE Culver

Re: Dating in the Colver-Culver Genealogy

Here's an example. On pp. 43-44 Colver cites the records for the birth of Edward's son, Samuel: "births: Samuel ye sonne of our sister Colver and her husband . . . . . . Colver, was baptized 29th ye 11 mo 1644", which date Colver translates to 29 January 1644. But wouldn't the 11th month of 1644 be January of 1645 by our reckoning?

Re: Jacob Colver Mary Anna Hoffman Colver

Rick,
I recently have been working on figuring out the Colver family plot in Berean Cemetery, Westfield Township, Bureau County, IL. Your Emaline Susanna Colver is buried in the same plot as her parents Mary Ann (Hoffman) and Jacob Colver.

There is also a stone for Emeline Susanna (Colver) and William Phillip Tilden's twin sons Eddie & Freddie Tilden who died March 1870.

Also in the Colver family plot is Emeline's sisters Mary S. (Colver) Beil who died at age 32 and Sarah C. Colver who died at a young age of 15.

Now to my question. In the same plot is a stone much the same as the stone for the girls that is worn and difficult to read, but I beleive it reads Henry Y. Swisher, d. Dec 27 1872. I beleive this to be the first husband of Emeline's sister Eliza Jane (Colver) Jackson. Do you know anything about this marriage?

In 1885 the History of Bureau Co. IL has a bio on Jacob Colver that lists Eliza as married to Ethan Jackson and living in Livingston Co. IL. She can be found there in the 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 Census. However, I do find a Henry & Eliza J. Swisher next door to Jacob H. Colver in Lincoln, Lancaster Co. NE in the 1870 census.

I know that Jacob Hoffman Colver, a son of Jacob & Mary Ann (Hoffman) Colver, lived in Mason City, IA for a while to run a hardware store and then returned to Ladd, IL, but wasn't aware that he was in Lincoln, NE? To make the confusion worse, the wife and children listed for this Jacob H. Colver in the 1870 census don't match the information that I have on Jacob Hoffman Colver... but the age is close, 4 years off.

I'm looking for any help to identify this Henry Swisher buried in the Colver plot - I think I'm on to something with him possibly being the first husband of Eliza Jane Colver. Any help would be appreciated.

dorrie

Hi
Just accidently found this today and recognized the names as being from my line. Have a book, Colver Family 1635-1985 and in the history of Charles Colver, post-Revolutionary War years, it states:
"27 April 1830, Jacob Colver, the grandson of Charles Colver, married Mary Ann Hoffman, the granddaughter of John Hoffman".
This book states:
"Edward Colver, the Puritan, patriarch of a large family now numbering in the hundreds of thousands of descendants, emigrated from England to the colony of Massachusetts in 1635."
I have not looked at this book for several years and am not sure of the links--as usual the family names of Edward, Charles, Jacob & Ephraim appear in many generations and it gets confusing unless you keep working with it!
My line as given in the book is:
Edward (1600-1685), son Edward 1654-1732), son Ephraim (1683-1728), son Ephraim (1717-1775), son Charles (1741-1817), son Jacob (1769-1828), son Jacob married to Mary Ann HOFFMAN (1806-1888), daughter Ellen (1847-1920?) who was my great grandmother, married to Charles H. Edwards.
Since I did not find the original message but just got in the midst, I am not sure of your relationship to Jacob & Mary Anna Colver, but it is certainly possible that we have a link!
I would be most grateful to hear from you!
Sandi McGinnis

Oh yea, they would be my 3rd great grandparents. Send me an email at aare@mtco.com, I'd be interested in exchanging our info. I show "Ella", Ellen L. Colver born 12-27-1846 married to Charles H. Edwards about 1867 with children being Frank C, Elbert, Eldon, Ellen. I have nothing on those children at all.

My lineage is through Ella's sister, Emaline Susanna Colver b:12-21-1836 married to William Phillip Tilden 10-12-1858. One of their daughters, Nettie Jane, married Henry Ethen Jackson in 1889 and one of their daughters, Minnie Etta Jackson was my Grandma. She died when I was a young kid, but I loved her dearly.

Re: Colver, Jackson, Collins

This is from the book "Colver-Culver Genealogy, Descendants of Edward Colver" by Frederic Lathrop Colver that was published in 1910.

This volume shows Franklin DeWitt Colver as the eldest child of the 7 children of DeWitt Lane Colver & Sophronia Shaw. Franklin & Amanda are shown as being married on 22 June 1856 and that they had 8 children.

The only info on Arthur shows he was born on the date you show and married on 3 July 1904 but does not say where the marraige occured or whom he married.

If you desire further info from the book regarding Franklin or his parents - please feel free to contact me at ViertelGen@msn.com.
