Daniel & Jeptha Colvin of north Louisiana, 1810s-1850s

I would like information on Daniel Colvin who settled in Ouachita Parish Louisiana between 1810 and 1814. He had several children, including son Jeptha. They settled near that is now Vienna, north of Ruston, Lincoln Parish Louisiana. However, this region was Ouachita Parish until March 1839 when it was put into Union Parish. Then it became north Jackson Parish in1845. Finally, in 1873 northern Jackson was combined with surrounding parishes to form Lincoln parish.

Jeptha Colvin founded the earliest post office in that region in 1838, Colvin's Post Office. It remained Colvin's until 1850, when the name was changed to Vienna.

Daniel Colvin was about the earliest settler of that region. Does anyone know where he lived prior to settling in north Louisiana, who his wife was, who his children were, where/ when he died?

Thanks.

My Great Grandfather was born in Hannibal, Missouri in the late 1800's. Unsure of the date. My Mother seems to think that he was 80 years old when he died in 1963-64. Trying to find any possible links to siblings or parents. No one seems to remember. He married Bessie Williams. And they had 16 children. He was married once before but the marriage was annulled before he saw the birth of the twins that his wife was carrying. Not sure of what her name was or the twins. My Grandmother was one of the 16. They lived in Kansas and Washington to the best of my knowledge. The 16 names are as follows: Leonard (deceased,Kansas),Viola (living,Washington),Raymond(living,Kansas),Kenneth(living,Iowa),Wayne(deceased,Kansas),Herbert(living,Kansas),Rosie(living,Washington),Louise(living,Kansas),Bessie(living,Arizona), Cleo Belle(deceased,Kansas),Myrtle(living,Washington),Emily(deceased,Washington),Norma Jean(deceased,Kansas),Corrine(deceased,Kansas)
and the twins, unsure of the names. Any imformation that anyone can give me would be of great appreciation. Thank you
Not sure of the county in Missouri that G.Grandfather was born in can not find Hannibal Missouri on the Map anymore.

I descend from Elizabeth Colvin (1745-1805), daughter of Mason Colvin. His birth would have had to be around 1725, but other Masons I've found were born later than than and, hence, too late for Elizabeth's 1745 birth. I also have that Catherine Stringfellow was Elizabeth's mother, but nothing conclusive. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I would guess it was taken in 1934 or so, as the car in it looks to be a 1933 or 1934 ford coupe. I would guess they had it taken with the care when the car was new?

Homer H. Colvin, Oakland Co., MI

"Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan" [Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1891], p.p. 401-402:

HOMER H. COLVIN, a member of the legal profession located in Pontiac, was born in Waterford Township, June 4, 1850. He is the eldest son and third child in the family of Levi B. and Keziah E. [Hodge] Colvin, both of whom were born and reared in New York, and accompanied their respective parents to this State in early days. Grandfather Nathan R. Colvin was born in Vermont and so too was his wife, Margaret Bachelder, the former being of Scotch and the other of English lineage. The name was originally spelled Calvin, they being lineal descendants of the founder of the Calvinistic doctrine. They came to this county in 1825 and settled on a tract of land and engaged in farming. He was socially disposed and open-hearted, and his dwelling was always open to passing strangers. He died in May, 1873, when eighty-four years old, and his widow departed this life in March, 1889, when upwards of ninety years of age.

The father of our subject was married in his twenty-fourth year and then established his home on land that his father opened up for cultivation. He is still living on the property, which consists of one hundred and ninety acres, where on are good buildings and suitable equipments for his work. He has generally kept a good flock of sheep and at present has registered Merinoes. He was formerly a Democrat but is now a stanch member of the Prohibition party. Besides our subject, his children are Emma A., wife of George Heath, residing in Pomona, Cal.; Ellen L., wife of the Hon. William E. Carpenter, member of the present legislature; Esther, who is with her parents; Evangeline, living in Ft. Wayne and State Agent for the Chetauqua book concern; Nathan B. a physician, in Pontiac, and Hiram C., teller in the Pontiac National Bank.

Homer H. Colvin spent his youth on a farm and attended the common school in the neighborhood. When twenty years old he became a student in the Pontiac High School, where he continued the pursuit of knowledge two years, after which he taught in the county three years. He then embarked in mercantile pursuits in company with Newton B. Babcock, carrying on a general store under the style of Babcock & Colvin. The connection was in force eighteen months, when Mr. Colvin sold out his interests and went to Reed City, where for six months he engaged in hotel keeping. The following winter he again taught school and in the meantime he read law more or less. In the spring he entered the office of Robbins & Davis in Pontiac, and after eighteen month's reading there was admitted to the bar. He did not begin practice until after he had taken a course of study in the law department of the University of Michigan and graduated with the degree of L. L. B. in 1879.

Returning to Pontiac, Mr. Colvin then opened a law office, associating himself with the Hon. C. E. Herrington and the firm of Colvin & Herrington was in force eighteen months. The partnership was then dissolved and Mr. Colvin entered into one with Mr. Robbins, with whom he had formerly studied. Since November, 1881, he has been alone in practice. Mr. Colvin was elected Mayor of Pontiac in 1883 and re-elected in 1884, and in 1886 was elected City Attorney filling the office during a period of two years.

December 7, 1880, Mr. Colvin was married to Miss Emma E. Sibley, the ceremony taking place in Chicago, Ill. The bride was born in this county and is a daughter of Freeman F. and Mary [Stone] Sibley, who came from New York to this State a number of years ago. Mrs. Colvin is intelligent, refined, and has an estimable character. They have two daughters: Maud and Ruth, who are being carefully reared and well educated. Mr. and Mrs. Colvin belong to the Methodist Episcopal Church and move in the best circles of Pontiac society. Mr. Colvin belongs to Oakland County Lodge No. 183, I. O. O. F. He is a Democrat and during several campaigns has stumped the county for his chosen candidates. He has been a delegate to county, State and congressional conventions, and on several occasions has been a member of the congressional committee. He has a sound knowledge of law, is fluent and apt in speech, and his reputation is increasing from year to year.
__________________

Note: Homer8 Colvin is a descendant of the Rhode Island to the Clarendon, Rutland Co., VT, Colvin: Levi Bacheldor7, Nathan Robinson6, Jeremiah5, Levi4, Jeremiah3, John2, John1.

In spite of a few published histories and cyber-statements to the contrary, John1's parents are yet unknown. No evidence has been found to indicate whether he came from England or Scotland or whether his surname originally was Calvin or Colvin. There is absolutely nothing to document the statement about the family "being lineal descendants of the founder of the Calvinistic doctrine."

Levi B. Colvin, Oakland Co., MI

"Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan" [Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1891], p.p. 707-708:

LEVI B. COLVIN. The history of this county is best told in the record of the lives of its pioneers, and it gives us pleasure to place on the pages of this Biographical Album, these paragraphs concerning an early settler of this part of Michigan, who has passed the greater portion of his life within the borders of this county, and has greatly aided in developing its resources. He has a comfortable home and substantial farm buildings on his estate, which is pleasantly located on section 32, Waterford Township, and comprises one hundred and fifty-seven acres, mostly under cultivation.

A native of the Empire State, Mr. Colvin was born in Niagara County, July 6, 1822, and is the son of Nathan R. and Margaret [Bacheldor] Colvin, both natives of Vermont. The father immigrated to New York in 1813, and there engaged in farming. He did not, however, make his home there permanently, for in 1831, accompanied by his family, he started out for the new West, where he took up a tract of Government land on section 32, Waterford Township, The deed to this farm, the most of which is still in possession of the family was signed by President Jackson. Mr. Colvin was a hard-working, unassuming man, who never aspired to public honors, but devoted his attention exclusively to the development of his farm. Politically he was a Democrat, and was prominent in Masonic circles.

In early life the parents of our subject belonged to the Methodist Church, but later affiliated with the Church of Believers. They were excellent people and were highly esteemed throughout the community where they passed the closing years of their useful lives. The father died in 1873, but the widowed mother survived until 1887, when she too, peacefully closed her eyes in death. The parental family included three children, all now living in Oakland County. Our subject enjoyed very meager advantages in youth, as schools were few and opportunities of attending them equally limited. He was reared to a stalwart manhood amid the pioneer scenes of this county and was early called upon to assist his father in developing a farm, and while doing so acquired a practical knowledge of farming in all its branches.

Mr. Colvin has not been unassisted in his labors, as by his married with Keziah E. Hodge, he secured the active co-operation of a most excellent helpmate. Mrs. Colvin is the daughter of Billings J. and Eleanor [Borden] Hodge, natives of New York, who came to Michigan at a very early day and settled in the town of Commerce. Our subject now owns a part of his father's farm, and by industry and economy has made a comfortable home, which is ranged among the best in the township. Of his marriage eight children were born; all except one of whom reached years of maturity and are filling honorable positions in life. Emma A., Mrs. Heath, who was born November 13, 1846, lives in California; Ellen, wife of the Hon. W. E. Carpenter, resides in Waterford Township, this county; Homer is a well-known lawyer in Pontiac; Esther, who is single, lives with her parents and is a teacher, as is also Evangeline; Nathan Billings is a physician in Pontiac; E. Serepta is deceased; Hiram C. is a teller in the Pontiac National Bank. The children received excellent educational advantages in youth, and are prominent in the various communities where they reside.

Mr. Colvin was formerly a Democrat, but is now a Prohibitionist, and has served as a delegate to Prohibition conventions. In various official capacities he has served the people, have been Justice of the Peace, Road Commissioner, and held other minor offices. He is a member of the Church of Believers, and they are people of warm hearts and noted for their kindness and hospitality. Mr. Colvin's honesty and integrity of purpose are as widely know as he, and when his word is passed all are cognizant of the fact that he will stand by it, whatever betides.
___________________

Note: Levi Bacheldor7 Colvin is a descendant of the Rhode Island to Clarendon, Rutland Co., VT, Colvin line: Nathan Robinson6, Jeremiah5, Levi4, Jeremiah3, John2, John1.

Nathan Billings Colvin, Oakland Co., MI

"Portrait and Biographical Album of Oakland County, Michigan" [Chapman Bros., Chicago, 1891], p.p. 683-684:

NATHAN BILLINGS COLVIN, M. D., of Pontiac, was born in Waterford Township, Oakland County, February 19, 1857, and was the second son of Levi B. and Keziah E. [Hodge] Colvin. The father was born in Middleport, N. Y., in 1822, and is the son of Nathan R. Colvin. The latter was a native of Rutland, Vt., and died in 1873, in his eighty-second year, on the homestead on which he located in 1832. Levi B. was but ten years of age when he came to Michigan, and still resides upon land settled by his father. He has been engaged in general farming and stock raising, making a specialty of merino sheep. The family is of Scotch-English descent.

Eight children were born to this pioneer, of whom seven are living. Nathan B. passed his youth on the farm and attended the district school. After taking a select course at Pontiac High School, he taught school four winters and studied medicine at intervals while teaching. In 1879 he went to New York City and entered the medical department of the University of the city of New York, graduating with two hundred and twelve others in 1882, at this time taking special courses in Bellevue Hospital in operative surgery and physical diagnosis, for which he received certificates of proficiency. He then began practice at Rolla, Mo., devoting considerable time to diseases of the eye which are prevalent in that climate. After five years there, he returned to Michigan and located in Pontiac, where he is now recognized as one of the able and successful physicians of the county. He enjoys a large practice, a portion consisting of the special diseases for which his previous study and practical experience eminently fitted him.

Socially Dr. Colvin is a member of the I. O. O. F., No. 3, of Pontiac, the Rolla District Medical Society, Michigan State Medical Society, and the American Medical Society. He was married in October, 1884, to Miss Emma E. Emory, the accomplished daughter of Judge Azro Emory, of St. James, Mo. Dr. and Mrs. Colvin are members of the Pontiac Methodist Church, have the best social advantages, are the happy parents of two children, Della and Levi B., and live pleasantly at No. 70 Asylum Avenue.
____________________

Note: Nathan Billings8 Colvin is a descendant of the Rhode Island to Rutland Co., VT, Colvin line: Levi Bacheldor7, Nathan Robinson6, Jeremiah5, Levi4, Jeremiah3, John2, John1.
Recently visited Dorset and Danby Vt to look for grandfather and great-grandfather. Found both! Gardner(grandfather) and Fayette (great grandfather) are both buried in Maple Hill cemetary in Dorset. Went to Danby to find the rest of the family i.e. John. and Luther but no success. There are two pages of Colvin's buired in Danby but the problem is they were Quakers and did not believe in large grave markers. Will try again next year. Gerald Fayette Colvin

I was recently told by my aunt that there is Cherokee in our
family. I think I may have found it through the Colvin side of my family. My great-grandfather looked like he was NA not very far back in his family line. His mother Elizabeth died when he was very young and he, his father and brother moved in with his maternal grand-parents their names were William and Rachel Colvin. In the 1880 census Joseph Defibaugh and his sons are living with the Colvins. They have VA and Ohio connections. The other Colvin family members names in the census are son Hiram, and daughter Nancy A. Joseph Defibaugh married her at some point. I am having trouble getting info. on this side. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Canada/Scotland William Colvin - then to NY

We're at a standstill with William Colvin (1828-1863). He is buried in Ontario but we have no idea who his parents are or where he was born. Married to Margaret Fleming, who is of Scottish descent and one of their children, Andrew, was born in Scotland. William did have a son, John, who is buried in the same cemetery in Ontario. The family ended up in NY (or at least one of Andrew's children did).

Still looking for information on Colvin's from Scotland. Have got as far as Robert Colvin (ggggg grandfather). I know he married a woman called Mary Hannah.

Mary gave birth to my gggg grandfather Andrew Colvin in 1832 in Alloa, Scotland.

He married a woman called Mary Gilmour b.1833 Glasgow. They went on to have four children. I only know of 2, my ggg grandfather William Colvin b. 1853 and Mary b.1855.

If anyone has any information what so ever i would be very grateful indeed and would be more than willing to return the favour.

Thanks for your time
Lee-Ann Colvin
Anna Colvin or Lois Colvin in Texas (?)

Anna Colvin and Lois Colvin were two of the names listed on a signature quilt top that we discovered while cleaning out my grandfather's home in San Angelo, Tom Green County, TX. No one in the family recognizes any of the names, so I am trying to locate someone that it might mean something to. This is a quilt top only and is not quilted. The other names are: The Turners, Margie and Harry Mifflin, Ben and Nadine, Hartmann, Ollie Mae, Betty Warren, Mrs. Otis Brackin, Mr. & Mrs. Victor Bruderer, Alva & Bill Blackerby, Lyn B. Willoughby, The Brays, The SA Blackerbys, Mr. & Mrs. GE Teel, George Phillips/Blanche Phillips, Gilberts, Joe Shaws, Mrs. J.W./Ruth & Jerry McMains, Sue Welch.
Any help finding one of these people or their descendents so I can return this heirloom to its rightful place would be appreciated.

Colvin/Beswick in Pike County, Missouri

In 1858 Thomas A. G. (Albert Gallatin?) Colvin married Susana (Jane) Beswick in Pike County, Missouri.

In 1860 John Benjamin Franklin Colvin married Ann Rebecca Beswick in Pike County, Missouri.

Jane and Rebecca were sisters and I believe that Thomas (Albert) and John were brothers.

These 2 couples were living together on 1860 census in Salt River Township, Pike County, MO.

I have not been able to find either of them in 1870.

Rebecca and John Colvin were living in Salt River Township, Pike County, MO on the 1880 census.

I have assumed that Thomas (Albert) Colvin died prior to 1880 - perhaps prior to 1871. Jane Beswick Colvin was remarried to Joseph Roberson and was in Salt River Township, Pike County, MO on the 1880 census. Thomas (Albert) and Jane's daughter Sophronia Colvin married Oscar Roberson - Joseph's son from a previous marriage.

I would like to communicate with anyone who has additional information about these families.

Thanks, Barbara Hardwick Collier

Colvins of Culpeper VA

Hello fellow Colvin researchers----

Does anyone have transcripts or copies of any original records from the Colvins of Culpeper Virginia?

I have the census images. What I really would like is wills or family Bibles.

I am trying to establish a connection of my Lucy Colvin to Benjamin, John, and Mason Colvin.

Lucy was born c. 1763. Lucy (or it could be Lucinda) married John Henry Buck in Culpeper county 24 Aug 1784. They remained in Culpeper for a time---I find him on a tax list there in 1787.

Beginning around 1790 Jefferson contracted with Buck to build a threshing machine from a model that Jefferson ordered from Scotland. He stayed to make improvements and build (I think) two other threshing machines for Jefferson. They lived at Monticello, and some of there children were born there.

In the censuses of 1820 and 1830 I find them in Louisa County, where they remained until their deaths---John Henry Buck in 1834 and Lucy sometime before the 1840 census.

In John Henry Buck's estate inventory I find a Gunter's scales, which is a forerunner to the slide rule.

I am trying to find Lucy or Lucinda's parents and siblings, but I cannot connect her difinitely to any.

The Bucks had a tradition (like so many others) of using middle names and also first names to honor siblings and parents. Lucy's grandson was named James Mason Buck (first born son of her son George Washington Buck). So there is a clue.

Thank you for any documents or sources that would help.

Lucy Colvin Buck is my 3rd great grandmother.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

I'm trying to help a friend with little info. Her father was Clyde W. Colvin, she thought born 1898 in Willow Springs MO. Her mother was Bertha Irene Shirk. She thought her father's father was either Hourand or Garland Colvin and her father's mother was Katherine Unknown.

I have Garland Colvin's in my line, but can't make any connection. I can't find Clyde in any census until the 1930 in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. He is 31, married to 1st wife Nellie H., he was born in MO as were both parents.

He registered in 1918 for the WWI Draft Registration, age 19 born Feb 24 1899, living in Kansas City, Jackson, MO. His nearest relative was Mrs. Kate Colvin (his mother I believe).

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? I'd love to share info.

Colvin-WV-OH

I am looking for information on Charles F Colvin born approx 1868 in either WV or OH. He married Sarah, nickname Sadie. Lived in Wetzel County WV in 1910, 1920, and 1930. Lived in Washington County OH in 1900. Married approx 1890. I can find no marriage record in OH or WV. Don't know his wife's maiden name. In 1910 it states he was born in WV, father born in OH, and unknown where his mother was born. In 1900, it says he didn't know his birth year or month, states born in OH, with mother and father both born in OH. His wife was born in OH with both parents born in OH. Some of their children were born in OH, some in WV. Children: Nettie, Isaphrona (Icy), Lloyd, Bessie, George, Alice, Roy, Ruth, Pearl O. I found a George and Leutishe Colvin in Tyler county WV in 1880 with a son, Charles, born 1867, but I don't know if this is really him. Any leads would be appreciated.

Ian Duncan Colvin and Sir Maitland Hall Park in India and South Africa

I am looking for info on Ian Duncan Colvin.

The first I know of him is that he worked in India, and was brought to South Africa by his uncle, Sir Maitland Hall Park. I don't know if Ian was born in India, or possibly Scotland, as one researcher has information that he grew up "at the manse". Maitland's father was the Rev. Hugh Park, minister in Cumbernauld, Scotland, for 42 years, so if Ian Duncan was his grandson, it's likely he spent time at the manse.

Maitland Park's brother was my great-great-grandfather, Elphinstone Park, so I would love to know whether one of Maitland's sisters married a Colvin, or whether this was on Maitland's wife's side.

Maitland Hall Park had been working on the Allahabad Pioneer in India, with Rudyard Kipling, and Kipling recommended him for the job of editor of The Cape Times. He worked at the Times from 1904, and died in Cape Town in 1921.

Ian Duncan Colvin was the assistant editor of The Cape Times.

I also found reference to an Ian Goodhope Colvin (1912-1975), and wondered if he was Ian Duncan's son.

Both Ian's have published books, available from Amazon, but I haven't found anything about their personal lives, families, etc.

If anyone has more information, I'd really appreciate it.

Allison Bill

I have seen Mason Colvin of Virginia listed here a few times. MY 3rd gr grandmother, Lucy Colvin, was married in Culpeper Co. VA in 1784, when she married John Henry Buck.

I do not know her parents or siblings, but I can say that her grandson (my gr grandfather) is named James Mason Buck. I find that interesting and wonder if there is a connection.

Her sons are named William Henry, James R., John S., and George Washington Buck. Daughters are Ann Mary, Elizabeth, Lucy, Nancy, and Sarah.

Warmest Regards,

Donna

Colvins and Marshall family in Adams co, Iowa

I am interested in learing more about a Francis(Frank) Colvin family that were living in Adair Co, Iowa by 1870. Frank's father was John Colvin, originally from Brown Co., Indiana. Frank's sister was Jane Colvin, who was married to Charles Marshall-living in Adams/Taylor counties, Iowa in 1850's and 1860's.

The Marshall couple had several children, Joseph W, Mahala, Mary P. But the whole family disappears by 1870.

I am most interested in Charles Marshall and what might have happened to that family-but also interested in Frank Colvin.

Thanks

Is anyone researching the Colvins of Vermont? I'm specifically looking for confirmation that John COLVIN, born about 1813 VT, m. to Lydia FRINK, had a daughter, Emily. She was also known as "Emma". Emily was married to Marshall Nichols.
John Colvin was born in Danby, Rutland, VT, later moving to Dorset, Bennington, VT where he is found in both the 1850 and 1860 census records. Lydia may have been daughter to William and Mary [Bromley] Frink.
Any help is appreciated!
thanks,
deb

Pendleton County, Kentucky, Colvins

I just figured out I have been following the wrong branch of the family tree. I had found my birth grandmother and grandfather in Rushville, Indiana. And thought I had tracked down the correct James W. Colvin born in Kentucky in about 1862. That was until my 1/2 sister sent me the death certificate for our Grandmother. It turns out my James W. is not from Washington County but from Pendleton County. Pendleton County has an excellent Genweb site and low and behold there is the family even mention of my Great Grandfather in Rushville in his brothers obituary. Does anyone on this board has information on the family of Charles Colvin his son Nimrod Colvin born in about 1897 and their ancestors and descendents. Wiping the egg off my face.

Many of you who use the Colvin Board here on Rootsweb may not be familiar with the COLVIN-L list.

The easiest way to join is to go to http://colvin.info/colvl.html and sign up there.

At present there are nearly 200 Colvin family surname researchers on the list.
