That is so cool that you knew your grandmother. And I'd wondered how Elwood had gotten to Florida.

Photos? Photos? How tacky would I be to ask if you might share copies of the photos. My branch has very few photos. Not sure none were taken, or if they were tossed out.

My email is charmruhnke@gmail.com

Charm
My dad (Elwood) was stationed in Venice, Florida at the end of WWII and got a job at the end of the war in Sarasota and lived the rest of his life there. He and my mother divorced when I was 5 after which my mother (and I) moved to Sterling, Ill. then Prophetstown, Ill. where we lived from 1954 to 1959 then we moved back to Florida. During that time I was able to get to know my grandmother Hattie. She was a delightful person that I have wonderful memories of.
Her relationship with the Hough's was odd but they took care of her till the end.
I recently got a got a copy of my dad's birth certificate and was shocked to see the spelling of our name to be Collyer not Colyer. I alwas heard that Grover died in the 60's but have no proof of that.

Don't know much about the Ruhnke side of the family but have a lot of Hatties early photos of what are I assume her side of the family. I look forward to going over your research.

Hi,

I think I located Grover in the California Death Index, dying in 1957.

Growing up, I don't remember hearing too much about Aunt Hattie (my great-grandfather Paul's sister). So this part of the family has been a mystery. (ha, all the Ruhnke's have been a mystery, why should Hattie be any different.)

Did you know your grandmother? Gpa Paul died before I was born, so only heard a few stories. And nearly nothing about their parents - Ferdinand and Johanna. Johanna died after her leg was amputated, she had gangrene (sp?) in the leg from stepping on something.

I have posted my Ruhnke research at rootsweb.com http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=ruhnke&am..., if you would like to see what I'd located to date.

I am the son of Elwood Colyer, grandson of Hattie Colyer. I am also trying to find out more about Grover which is how I stumbled on this post. All I know is that Grover left Hattie when the boys were very young and she took a job as maid for the Hough's. She lived with Herb and Zell till they passed. Herb Hough moved frequently (and she with them) which is how she ended up in Sterling. Grover was very much the black sheep and as a result little was ever said about him. I know Grover was a cook and a soldier in WWI and was born in Missouri. Elwood passed in 2005.

-Jerry Colyer

I found some pictures in my grandmother's collection of you (I think), Jacob Zong and my Aunt Ruth taken on a 1935 trip to Centre Co, PA. They are located here:

http://picasaweb.google.com/113055625759118469730/GladysMcMa...
http://picasaweb.google.com/113055625759118469730/GladysMcMa...
http://picasaweb.google.com/113055625759118469730/GladysMcMa...

Anyway, I was never sure of your relationship to Jacob other than just guessing from the picture.
Hi, Cheryl. I believe we have had contact before. I have a lot of information. Yes Hendrick Colyer and Elizabeth Jonckers are family. Their names are written in the baptismal records of the Second River RD Church 1747-1749.You can get this online. It is listed under Hendrick Caller and is the baptism of Lena (Elinor). Much family history here involving the revolutionary war.
Contact me at jantom93@yahoo.com for more sharing. I have photos, maps, wills, etc and am willing to share.
Hope to hear from you soon....Janice Colyer Davenport, nj

Cheryl876 - I think we might have the same lineage I have an Elizabeth Collier that married Josiah Gould in my line. They had a daughter Elenor who married Lemuel Jacobus. I was wondering if you had any more information on the Collier/Colyer line. Right now I have Elizabeth's parents as Hendrick and Elizabeth but no information about them or if this is even correct.

Anything you have on this line would be a great help to me.

I am a direct descendent of Monroe Colyer. He was my Great, Great Grandfather on my father's side. Monroe did live to be 102. On his 100th birthday he played softball, and rode a horse, but feel off and spent the last 2 years of his life bed ridden and died of uremic poisoning.

I have a photo of Monroe, and I also have one of his son John Lee (my great grandpa) sitting in a barber shop with his son (my grandpa) Herbert Lee.

Hattie was in New Hampton, Chickasaw, IA in 1925 and listed as a widow (enumerated as coyler). She is a boarder and in that household is H. H. and Zella Hough. Herbert H. and Zel S. are also in the household in Whiteside where Hattie is listed as a maid. Perhaps she was employed by them in Iowa and she moved with them to IL.

Hope this is helpful.

Grover Colyer and his sons Robert and Elwood

I am seeking information on Grover Colyer, who married Hattie Ruhnke in 1914 in Eldora, Iowa. They had two sons Elwood and Robert.

Hattie and the boys were living in Whiteside County, Illinois by 1928. Robert married Blanche Isabel Piper in 1943. He died in 1985. Robert's obituary lists 6 daughters - Tonya Colyer and Trina Colyer of North Liberty, Iowa; Tarjbee Colyer of Iowa City; Barb Brunk of Denver, CO; Debbie Book of Dallas; and Lisa Colyer of California. Also listed are one step-son Kevin Piper, two step-daughters Rene Rice of Winterhaven Fla and Brenda Jones of North Liberty, Iowa. I also know Robert and Blanche lost a son (Danny) and a daughter (Karen).

Hattie was my g-grandfather's (Paul Ruhnke) sister. I am hoping to learn when Hattie left Iowa for Illinois (and why) and what happened to Grover.

Thank you for any and all clues.

Charm Ruhnke

James A Colyer Clay County KY

Hi, I've posted before, but it's been a while, so here goes. James A Colyer married Lucy Holland Wages on 26Nov1873 in Clay County Kentucky. Their marriage License is the only paper evidence I have to prove this man lived. It seems theirs was a short marriage and ended before the 1880 census. Their 4 children were Harvey 1875 married Cynthia House, Mary Ellen 1877(married David R. Allen, widower of America Jane Gibson), David Colyer 1878 married Abigail Allen (David Allen and America Jane Gibson's daughter), Nancy 1879 married Stephen G. Allen (D.R.Allen and America Jane Gibson's son). Lucy Holland Wages was previously married to Dalton Wages and they had several children :Highy, Magoffin,Green, Anderson, John, Dudley and William (Wages or Wagers). As for James A Colyer, census records site his children as claiming their father was from Ohio, but I wonder if that may have really been Ohio County KY? I can't find a James A Colyer to fit this James A Colyer in any state in any year, but there is one who is living with the Joseph Martin family in 1880 Kentucky. This particular James Colyer was listed as being 62 yrs old and divorced. Does this James Colyer living with the Martin family "belong" to anyone out here? Can anyone help me find "my" James A Colyer? Thank you for any help you can give.....Dana...THudson763@aol.com

My grandmotehr is Lillie Miller, and Amos, who I think was her father, was a twin. He was married to Bertha Colyer.
Could this be the same Colyers you are working on?

Colyer Family Cemetery, Pulaski County, Kentucky

I am wondering if anyone knows the location of the "Colyer Family Cemetery," as it's called in the first volume of the Pulaski County, Kentucky, Cemetery Book?

The location given in the book is simply "N Hwy 27-70."

This particular Colyer clan is the family of Humphrey Colyer (1808-1879).

I do not believe the cemetery is anywhere near US 27, as Humphrey Colyer owned land on Bee Lick Creek. His property in that area was on the east side of Hwy 39, stretching perhaps over into Rockcastle County, with the bulk of it being north of Hwy 70. The Arnie Gentry Road (KY 3267) runs through part of Humphrey's old property.

Humphrey was living on the Bee Lick land at least as late as 1868.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

Hello Marie, Sorry I didn't get in touch, but got an initial subscription to ancestry for 3 months which lapsed and I've only got around to resubscribing now. Yes, we are the missing COLYER family that you are looking for. Eric Vine COLYER is my husband's grandfather. There were several Colyer children from Eric Vine's marriage to Winifred Allen, they were Ronald Colyer, Ken Colyer, Alan Colyer, Peter Colyer and Joan. My understanding is that the three eldest children broke away (due to divorce) to the Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria area, the youngest children stayed in the south of the UK with their mother. Ron, the eldest, joined the Merchant Navy but later lost touch with Ken and Alan. They met up again about 15 years ago, however all three are now deceased, Ron fairly recently and Ken last year. Ken is my husband's father, my husband is Tony Vine Colyer. He has one son to his first marriage called Mark Vine Colyer (as you see the name goes on). I can add to your family tree (but only just getting the hang of this software (my software version used to automatically update, but the link's broken somehow). Anyway, please get in touch sometime as it would be interesting to know something of the family history from the south.

Stephen, John & John, Jr. Coller (aka Collar, Collier, Colyer, Collyer) of Connecticut

After a lot of digging, I've pieced together the following Coller/Colyer/Collyer/Collier family:

STEPHEN COLLER/COLYER 1
b. 1710-1730
d. late Oct/early Nov 1804, New Hartford, Ct
m. before 1759 to Sarah _____
children:
Hannah, b 15 Nov 1759, New Hartford, Ct (no further info)
John, b. 15 Feb 1763, New Hartford, Ct

Stephen bought land in New Hartford in 1760 from William Lurvey. In 1773, he sold land to William Walling. In 1780, he bought land on which he is already living from Sarah Cowles, not for cash, but for 12 bushels of corn & 1 peck of wheat. He sold land to Stephen Fox in 1785. Stephen appeared only on the 1800 census in New Hartford.

Stephen lived in close proximity to Oliver Collar & Oliver Jr., and their known in-laws (Walling & Fox families)and had land transactions with those in-laws. Oliver Sr & Jr moved to Fairfield, Vt by 1810. Oliver Sr. was married in New Hartford & was a contemporary of Stephen. Do not know origins of either Stephen or Oliver or if they were actual relatives.

Other Collar/Coller/Colyers appear in New Hartford, Burlington and Bristol & could be related:

Roxanna Coller, b. 1782, New Hartford, m ~1806 to Richard Stevens, as his 2nd wife (per Stevens Genealogy). They lived in New Marlborough, Mass. Roxanna apparently died 1823-1827, sometime after the birth of her fourth child and her husband's 3rd marriage.

William Coller bought land in New Hartford in 1787 from Levi Fox, and in 1788 from Joel Parks. In 1789, some of William's land was confiscated to pay a judgement to John Camp, "late of Stephentown, NY." William sold land in 1796 to Amasa & Lerah Hinman.

The 1790 census broke out only a few towns in Litchfield County. The rest were combined under the heading "Litchfield." Therefore, the following could all be within New Hartford; they are also listed in close proximity on the original document (listing: Oliver Coller, John Coller, Isaac Coller.

Sally Coller m. 1792, New Hartford to William Calloway of Sandisfield, Mass.

Nathan Coller bought land from Levi Fox in 1794. He sold this land in 1795 to Oliver Collar.

"Roslin" Collar lived in Bristol per 1800 census. Probably the same person as Reuben, below:

Reuben Collar lived in Burlington per 1810 census (note Burlington spun off of Bristol in 1806).

JOHN COLYER 2 (Stephen1)
b. 1763, New Hartford, Ct
d. 15 Oct 1828, Burlington, Ct
m. 27 Aug 1787, New Hartford, Ct to Sophia Hills
no further info found on Sophia Hills
John served in Revolution & was pensioned
John bought land in New Hartford in 1781 from Stephen Pitkin. He sold land in 1785 to Levi Fox.

children:
John Colyer, Jr.,
b. 1790-1795; d. prob. before 1830

Caroline M.
Re: Colliers of MA Vol 2 now published

---------

I am now accepting orders for Volume Two of “The Colliers of Massachusetts,” as described in my posting of January 11, 2009. The final product has 236 black and white pages, including a full index for both the first and second books. There are also 10 pages of illustrations, many in color, and color cover page and dedication page. Volume One was approximately 160 pages, plus illustrations.

The price for a soft-cover, “spiral bound” edition is $35. The CD version is $10. If I receive 25 orders for a hardcover edition, I can offer that at $45. All prices include shipping, and I will require payment in advance. The CD or soft-cover editions can be produced quickly, but there will be at least a few weeks delay for the hardcover books, once the 25-order mark has been reached. Orders should be addressed to 218 Leominster Rd., Lunenburg, MA 01462. Inquiries can be addressed to wade_collier@hotmail.com, or to the same mailing address.

An overview of this “Colliers of Massachusetts” project, and an index to the individuals covered in Volumes One and Two can be seen at
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/o/l/Wade-Collie...

Wade Collier
Trumbull County, Ohio and Lunenburg, Mass.
Colliers of MA Vol 2

The second volume of “The Colliers of Massachusetts” will be published February 15, 2009. I am presently completing the index and illustrations. Volume One was published in 2004, covering the first five American generations. Volume Two covers only the sixth generation, with minimal information on the seventh.

To my knowledge, these two volumes contain the first full treatment of the descendants of Thomas (1) and Susannah Collier, who arrived in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1635. Including names of the 7th generation children, and their spouses where known, over 2,500 Collier descendants and spouses are covered in these books. Of this total, approximately 190 are of the “Collier” surname – primarily of Massachusetts and Maine origin – and over 100 are surnamed “Collyer,” of New Jersey origin These descend from Moses (2) Collier, who went to Woodbridge, New Jersey late in life. Lorings, descended from Deacon Thomas Loring, another early Hingham settler, and as well as Thomas and Susannah Collier, number about 215.

I invite those who are interested in these families to visit
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/c/o/l/Wade-Collie...
There you find an index of the individuals covered in the Collier genealogy, a preview of Volume Two, and a number of illustrations, maps, and other items on the family.

I particularly invite correspondence from those who have helped me in this 10-year endeavor, and who haven’t been in touch for a while. We’re getting there !!

Wade Collier
Trumbull County, Ohio and Lunenburg, Mass.
