I'm looking into Comber history. My ancestor Andrew Comber(possibly his first name was actually Patrick) moved from Ireland to England in the 1870's, with his son John (b. 1843). I've found clues linking the family back to E.Galway, but so far nothing concrete. Rumours of a boxer in the family and also of some family members moving to America.

Hi Norma, thank you for your reply. I have not been able to come up with much on the Combers.Maybe they all died out. My great grandmother Nora Comber was born say 1840. her father was James Comber her mother was a Forde.the only decendents I was able to find were in San Francisco in the very early 1900's. They seemed to go ino fire and police work. The father married a Kelley. one of the girls was Matilda (Tilly). One son was an Edward(fire dept). There were several other children. One boy went into vadviille (sp?). The elder male Comber may have died in the 1906 earthquake. I think the elder Comber was either my great grandmother's brother or the son of her brother. The part of Galway that they were from borders Rosscommon/Mayo and Offey. By the way back in the day Offey was either called King or Queen Co. After Irish Independence they changed it to Offey. Let me know if you think there is any possible connection. I need one. Thanks best wishes,Ann

Hi Ann
We have an Edward Comer/Comber born 15 Feb. 1880. Son of Edward Comber, a soldier, and Leticia Williams. This was found in the Woodford/Portumna , Galway, Ireland, Civil Birth Records.
The Edward, born, 1880, also lived in Birr, County Offaly. He and his wife Hester Connolly can be found, with their family in the 1911 census of Birr.
Is this a familiar family to you?
What era are you looking for?

Norma Duffy
Michael,
I wonder if you had ever heard a story ( and it may well
be only a story handed down in my family as true) That a few
Comber boys came to Philadelphia from Ireland to join thier
brothers and on the voyage were told they should change thier
names as some Combers were fighting for the freedom cause. in America and using the name Comber to enter Philadelphia at that time was not a good idea. The story goes they changed thier names to Tennien . This is in a letter from
a lady by the name of Agatha Tiernen (married name) at the
age of 96 from her hospital bed. If you are interested please
reply. Our family members would like to clear up the Mysteries surrounding this story.Other surnames connecting this family are Tenniens & Catherine Connolly from Vermont.
Peggy
Michael,

My grandmother spelled her name comer and thats what I always understood it to be. It was only when I started conducting my own research that I came across verifiable ancestors from the mid 1800's who spelled the name Comber.

We have a James and Patrick in common here, do you have birthdates with that information?

Hi Charles,
My cousin Tom Comber had done some research some years ago.
He stated that Anne Comber had six children.John,Patrick,Mary,Edward,Bridget and James.
It appears that he got his information from microfilmed records of the RC parish of Tynagh,Co.Galway.
It Appears that our name was spelled 'Commer' and 'Comer'
at different stages untill about 1850 approx when the name became Comber. How was your name spelled when it first arrived in the USA.?
I hope this information is of use to you.I have lots more which i can send to you.

Regards.Michael Comber.

Michael,

I was looking over my notes and thought I would let you know. My original Patrick born in 1815 had a brother Thomas who had 4 children, Lawrence b 1861, Mike b.1863, John '65, and Anne '69.
There was at least one other brother of Patrick a James born in 1826, he married twice, first a woman named Margaret, then a Bridget. With Bridget he had 7 children as follows; Martin b. 1868, Patrick b.1871, Bridget b. '74, Ellen b. '81, James (jr?) b. '84, Michael b. '87, and EDWARD b. 1891

Michael,
Thanks for writing, there may be a connection, I'm unsure at this point. Do you happen to know any of Edward six siblings or his parents ?? You say edward was born in 1824, one of six children. My g-g-grandfather was a Patrick Comber born in or near Loughrea in 1815. I know he had at least two siblings one was a Thomas b. 1821, My Patrick married a Mary Hooban from the same area, she was born in 1825.
Patrick and Mary had 11 children but none of these 11 was an Edward. It seems likely that your edward my have been a brother to my Patrick born in 1815. My Patrick had a son Patrick who was born in 1856 as well, but as I said, none of this Junior patrick's siblings was an Edward.
If by chance we do make the connection between your Edward and my Patrick I have quite a bit on my line to share.
Let me know.
My Combers were from Galway or one of the ajoining counties. I believe my great great grandfather was a James Comber his wife was a Forde. I can not recall her first name off the top of my head. Their daughter Nora Comber married my great grandfather Thomas Curley and they lived in the Ballinasloe area of Galway. The Curleys were Catholic. I am not sure about the Comber/Fordes. I have not been able to find out much about the family either in the US or Ireland.

I can find the family of Walter Chart Comber (1844) and his wife Eliza nee Argent (1841) in the UK census from 1871 to 1891, but the entire family seems to have vanished after that. They were living in Lambeth in 1891, but I can find not a single member of the family in the 1901 census. Does anyone know if they emigrated, and if so, where to? Children names were William Dennis 1866, George 1868, Walter Henry 1869, Charles 1871, Raymmond 1874, John 1876 and Eliza 1880.

My Mom & Dad lived in the same duplex in Il. outside of St.Louis back in the 1943. Thay have exchanged X-mas cards every year and she said she didn't get one last year. I said I would heck on the internet. When I saw Pat Comber I knew I was on the right track. Mom said she knew Pat's wife was from Philly. So is your father still around? By the way , I do remember your Dad and two boys coming to Arcade for my parents 25th anniversary back in 1968, so I guess we actually have met.
