John: Just searching through a message board and found your information about the combs family. I'd like to do this part of the family tree but don't know exactly how to start. How were the Combs related to James F. O'Connor & Anna T. McCavock? I believe Julea was a sister to one of them, but I don't know which. Can you help? Do have Julea's name spelled correctly and do you know when she died? Thanks so much for any info you can give me. Joyce O'Connor, Gardner, Kansas

The entry is "Edward Coombes, China Mender, Queen Street". Queen Street was in Castle Precincts, off Castle Street, and still exists. He is also listed in later editions, up to 1805. He paid rates on a property in Queen Street for 1785-1802, the entries for 1799-1802 record him as "poor" and no rates were paid for those years. There are no records of any rates paid in relation to later trade directory entries,
G'day Michael - I have come across a repaired blue and white plate in a Sydney, Australia auction with the same handwritten name and address (minus the china mender) dated 1787. Your posting tells me more than I know from this plate; so I can't help you any further except to fuel the mystery! If he was a mender rather than a maker, he wouldn't appear in any of the normal sources eg Godden. When I've time I might explore a bit more. Cheers, Gerry

Hello Pat,
Thanks for taking the time to look me up!

Just to make things more convenient for other researchers, could you possibly re-post your query/reply on the thread I started over on the Knott board? It might be useful to more people there as a Sussex/Knott entry rather than here as an Oxford/Combes post. The thread is "Knott family in Sussex" and the specific entry about the property docs is 11th Feb 2005 (not 2004). Meanwhile, if you let me know your email address, I would LOVE to get in contact with you to pool knowledge. Mine is baucellst(at)yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk.

Tracey

I'm very interested in info about George Combes and Sarah Knott, my
GGGGrandparents. My brother's research has no info on Sarah and another Combes for George's father. I think the property docs. settle any question in my mind. Would love to find out more. Pat

COMBES or COMBS of Long Island NY

I am researching the COMBS or COMBES of Long Island NY. The area of the family I am researching was in Freeport, Hempstead, Rockville Center, Baldwin and Oceanside. Basically the entire south shore of Nassau County. However, one thing I noticed in the 1880 census for this area; it was then noted as Queens county, NY. But by the 1900 census, this area of Long Island was then noted as Nassau County, LI, NY.
I am trying to find the parental lines of Preston H. COMBES/COMBS. The family used to call him Uncle Bill. Uncle Bill was born in 19 Aug 1901 NY and died in Bristol, Grafton, NH in 17 June 1989. He haD two brothers that I knew of. One was Charles COMBES/COMBS who was a Bayman and live in Freeport. The other brother was Lawrence COMBS/ COMBES.
Uncle Bill (PRESTON) married Eleanor Charlotte REMICK of Bristol, NH about 1919 and they lived in Bristol, NH in 1920 census, where Eleanor was pregnant with their first child, Vira, born in 1920, NH. By the 1930 census, they are living in Merrick, LI, NY and now had a second child Richard born in 1921, NY. Richard married Lillian May SJOHOLM, of Hempstead, LI, and they lived in the Baldwin area of the south shore of Nassau county. And they had two children, Richard Jr. (aka; Dixie) and Karen. If anyone has information on the COMBS/ COMBES families of the south shore of Nassau County, NY please contact me at <gail_veve @yahoo.com> I have more info on this line if you are interested, but need info on the COMBES lineage. Thanks for any and all help Gail (REMICK) Veve

Sounds like all the information matches, Arthur Wiflrid Combes married Violet Alice Wheeler July 15, 1908 in St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Bromley. Within a few years they moved to Putney and had two daughters Vera and Kathleen, then they moved to Mauritius and my grandfather Maurice James Combes was born on Aug. 20, 1915. They returned from Mauritius in 1925 and settled in Oxford. My great grandmother did die young, the date sounds right, I'll have to ask my mum, I'm actually headed to the UK tomorrow night for my grandmother's funeral. Maurice died Aug. 19, 2002. Maurice married Gladys Mary Draper on April 29, 1939 in Reading, and they settled in Headington (minus interruptions for WWII) They had three daughters, Susan Mary (Bone) now lives in Crouch End, London, born May 27, 1941, Christine Elizabeth (Swartz) now lives in the United States, born June 12, 1946 and Caroline Jane (Raine) now of Milton Keynes, born May 26, 1963. And six grandchildren (myself being one) and as of today 7 great grandchildren. We have very few photos of my grandad as a child, so any that you have would be appreciated. How are you related to us or how do you have photos etc.? I forgot to add that Arthur, my great-grandfather did remarry after Violet's death, and had more children, but I know very limited info about them. My mum and aunts know more.

Ruth Harriet Spicer Beacham Combs and Carl Combs were my grandparents. Ruth's maiden name was Spicer, but she was raised by the Beacham family of Phelps, NY. I believe she was born 19 Jan. 1905 in Ithaca, NY. She passed away in 1973. I have not been able to find out anything about her Spicer heritage- she did not talk about it. She considered herself a Beacham. I was not aware that she had any sisters. If I find out anything, I will let you know.

Hi,

Thanks for replying. I'm not absolutely certain we are talking about the same people thought the names seem to fit nicely. Was your great grandfather Arthur Wilfrid Combes? Did they live in Oxfordshire? Did Violet Alice die at 45?

If all these things tie up for you, please let me know. I would really like to find out about Maurice and his descendants, if he had any. If we have the right person, then I have photos of Maurice as a young man and possible photos of his parents and family that I cannot identify as such, but a direct descendant might well be able to by comparing them with their own albums.

Look forward to hearing from you

Violet Combes (married name - maiden name unsure) was very probably married to Arthur Wilfred Combes and they lived for some time in Oxfordshire, UK. Maurice Combes was probably their son, born abt 1914-1915. She died at the age of 45 according to her grave marker.

I have found references to a Violet A. Combes who died in 1931, aged 45, in Headington, Oxfordshire.

I should like to find anyone connected with her to compare notes and exchange information so as to confirm my findings. Any clues greatly appreciated.
