Oliver & Cora (Hasler) Combs, Greene Co., Indiana

Hi,

I have been research the Combs family for several months now and have just gotten to Oliver and Cora (Hasler) Combs.

I have their children as:

1. Maude Rae Combs (29 Mar 1901 - 26 Jun 1988) married to Hoyt Hash and then Albert Turek. Do not have marriage dates.

2. Merle Curtis Combs (23 Apr 1903 - 08 May1984) married to Madge M. Huffer on 07 Jan. 1926 in Howard Co., Ind.

3. Pearl L. Combs (27/29 Oct 1910 -27 Dec1990) married to Mibly Smith. No marriage date.

4. Robert Lee Combs (17 Jun 1915 - 31 Mar 2001) married to Opal Anderson.

5. Ralph Combs - (30 Oct 1918- ?)

but after looking through Greene County's birth records they have that Oliver and Cora had a son Howard Wendell Combs on 29 Apr 1905 and a son Teddy Edward Combs on 19 Dec 1907. This is where my confusion comes in. There is a Dale Dennis Combs that has the same birth dates as Howard Wendell and people says he is a son of Oliver and Cora. And I can't find any information on Teddy Edward but people says they had a son William E. born 19 Dec 1908 not 1907.

Is anyone familiar with this family that could help me solve this?

Thanks.

Also research other combs from Greene Co., Indiana. Feel free to contact me.

Death of Mr. and Mrs. James Combs little son, Ravia, Oklahoma

Appears in The Ravia Weekly News, Friday, 10 February 1911, Johnston County, Oklahoma

Died – The little son of Mr. and Mrs. James Combs died Monday morning and the little form was laid to rest in Ravia’s silent city Monday morning.

Sometimes in the spring time the little flower we welcome as the snow drop droops and dies but its delicate face has inspired us to hope and pertumed our life with thoughts of purity.

This beautiful baby life was so precious, so frought with blessings to his parents that he seemed a flower of paradise permitted to bloom for a brief season by their side, then recalled to its native skies, leaving the earth road for them dark and lonely indeed.
Combs, Combe' History

Hi cousins, Looking for more information on what nationality I am!! Dad said I was Irish but the records and "The Combses Genealogy" book I have lists oldest record showing Richard Combe, his son John combs leaving Devonshire to Jamestown on the ship Marigold in 1691.

As to not put my whole family tree I willl list a few from the oldest records I have and my immediate grandparents. My tree has some interesting characters you might have heard of; John combs b.1733 d.1820 Sire of Eight Brothers and brother to "Danger Nick." Jackson John X Combs fathered 21 children with two wives, one being (Chatherine Walters 16 kids) My grandfather was EPHRAIM (BUM) COMBS B.3-16-1879. He married his wife Millie Ann Griffin in Wisconsin but was born in Kentucky. Numerous family in Man, West Virginia. My grandfather reportedly had to run here to Oregon after accidently killing a black man in early 1900's.

Please let me know if you have any connection to my branch of the family tree.

Joyce

Erastus Combs, Hazard County Kentucky, Sonoma California, 1909-1982

      Hello,
I am looking for information about my gg grandfather. My great grandfather's name was Erastus William Saunders Macintosh Combs, Saunders and Macintosh are family surnames. Erastus was born in Hazard county Kentucky on June 24, 1909 or 1911 (social security death index, California Death index). Erastus is of Scottish decent, the Combs family changed their name from McCombs to Combs when they arrived in America before the Revolutionary War. Erastus helped build the Panama Canal. Erastus ran away from home when he was the age of 16, not much is known of his family. His biological mother died when he was in his early teens abnd his father re-married and had many other children. He lied about his age to join the military, hence the difference in the years he was born. Erastus' date of death is May 16, 1982 and he died in Sonoma California. He was married to my great grandmother Marie Kenezevich (Yugoslovia).
Marie had two brothers (names unknown) who changed their last name to Martin. Marie's father's name was Martin Kenezevich and he was married to Natalie Bonini Kenezevich. Natalie's family owned a restaurant in San Francisco Ca during the 1906 earthquake.
Any other information that you may have would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You
Milly Combs
Millicent.Combs@uconn.edu
Surnames: Combs, McCombs, KENEZEVICH, MARTIN, Bonini
Sandy /Joseph Santos Combs AKA Jack Johnson (Wendel, WV)

Sandy / Santos Combs married my great Aunt Marion (Murnie) Hamilton around 1920's in the Wendel, Taylor Co.,WV area. Dec. 24, 1926 Sandy was stabbed to death in Wendel. He also went by the name of Jack Johnson. This was according to verbal family history, but I have located newspaper articles regarding the murder, which does list him with both names. Sandy and Murnie had a daughter Josephine b. about 1921, but birth date I am not sure of.
(newspaper article regarding the murder is from Dec. 1926, however gr aunt wrote in Bible it was Dec. 24, 1925 - memory I guess.) She called him JACK, but on death cert. Sandys father in law gave info as Sandy Combs.
Other than the death cert. stating he was born in Italy - I know nothing more on him. ANYONE know anything about this fellow? oh yes, the article mentioned that he had a wife and 3 children - Sandy and Murn only had Josephine - other 2 could have been nieces, OR with 2 names, possibly a double life - HELP !!

unk.COMBS m.2nd wifeOLIVIA(LIB)LOSEY@1900-1915

Please help me solve the puzzle. OLIVIA(LIB) LOSEY b.22 SEP 1859 d.4 FEB 1949 m.unk.COMBS. Olivia already had 2kids-JOHN and JAMES GROVER(known as GROVER or JG) LOSEY born and raised in CAMPBELLco,KY. I dont know if Combs was from KY or OH, but he and Lib married and moved to CLERMONTco,OH probably AFTER 1900. Im guessing Combs was probably married before and had kids. Olivia and Combs didnt have children together. He died before her probably 1915-1930 in clermont co,OH. Her son Grover Losey & his wife ELIZABETH bought a farm in clermont co,oh @1920-1925 and after Combs died, JG's mother Olivia moved in with them. JG(grover) and Elizabeth had RUTH b.1919 KYd.1931OH and son HOWARD CHARLES b.1928OH. Howard's sister Ruth died when he was@3 and his mother Elizabeth died when he was@5. His gma Combs died when he was @12. His father then lived with him til his death but never talked of his past. Howard doesnt remember anything about his Uncle JOHN but knew John's daughter EDITH but never knew his relationship to her. Edith had 3 children, a living daughter EILEEN (m.
Combs in Arkansas early 1900 - Sue Crawford

I found an old post by Sue Crawford about Combs living in Arkansas in the early 1900's. From her post I learned that her grandmother is a sister to my husband's great-great grandmother. I tried to email her using the email she supplied in the post, but it came back as unknown. According to her list of posts, she has not posted here since 2003. If anyone knows how to get ahold of her I would appreciate it greatly.

I am seeking information on Mamie Combs who lived in Mound City, Holt County, Missouri. She was born around 1894 to James Combs and Ida Johnson Combs.

I know her married name was Rose, and she moved to Chicago, Illinois. She attended the funeral of her half-brother, James Harrison Combs, in October of 1950 and was listed in the obituary as Ms. Norma Rose of Lisle, Illinois.

In February, 1949, she was listed as having attended the funeral of her half-sister, Mary Ellen Combs Bolich, as Ms. Mamie Rose of Chicago, Illinois.

I also have a picture that says "This is Mamie" and depicts a couple with three children, so she must have had children.

I would be grateful for any information you may have on Mamie or any of her siblings. These would be Margaret Elizabeth Combs Woodard of Falls City, NE, Burl Combs, Rosetta Combs Travis, Mary Ellen Combs Bolich, or James Harrison Combs of Mound City, Holt County, Missouri.

Looking for information on Phebe Combs, who married Thomas Spencer Ogden. Had one son, Spencer. They began their missionary career on Corisco Island, near Gaboon, Africa. The husband died in Africa, and the wife and son returned to the US. Phebe returned as a missionary to Gaboon and served there through the 1880s and 1890s. I don't know what became of Spencer, and I don't think Phebe died in Africa, but my information in scant. She and her husband were originally from the New Brunswick, NJ region.

I am researching my grandmother Victoria Combs Ashley. I have clarity in terms of the marriage record to Ben Ashley 1911, in the Knott County, Kentucky records.

My efforts to find record of her parents has dead ended. She lists her parent as dead, with first names of Jim and Mary. My suspicions are her parents, one or the other were indian. The marriage certificate was witnessed by a Bird and Margaret Combs, not sure their connection.

I know this is a long shot.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mary Clay is believed to have been the daughter of Edward Clay (the Uncle of Henry Clay, The Statesman called the Great Compromiser) and Magdelene Trabue. Mary is believed to have been born in Virginia around 1780. She most probably left Virginia with her parents, but this is not certain. She is believed to have married a Daniel Jackson and to have given birth to a daughter named Mary Georgina Jackson between 1825 and 1835 -- most probably in 1830 or 1831 (Mary Clay could have been 48 or so). This Mary Georgina Jackson married Micah Sterling Combs in Nashville, Tennessee in July, 1853. Micah Combs is the son of James Woody Combs note early attorney in Tennessee

From another posting
Magdelen Trabue (1748-1815) m.
Mrs. Alice Combs and Son Poisoned Blackwell, Oklahoma

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 4 September 1902 Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

WAS PURE MALICE

Attempt Made to Poison a Blackwell Family

Arsenic Was Put Into Their Coffee

Mrs. Alice Combs and Son Poisoned and Will Probably Die – House Entered During Absence of Family – Trousers, Mandolin and Guitar Destroyed

Blackwell: An attempt to murder the entire family of Mrs. Alice Combs was made in this city. Mrs. Combs and her oldest son, Ernest, were poisoned by arsenic in their coffee at breakfast. Mrs. Combs suddenly went into spasm at the table. The boy was not taken sick for an hour. Both may die. The other children were still asleep and did not eat breakfast with their mother and brother. The coffee was poisoned during the family’s absence. The house was entered and arsenic was sprinkled in the coffeepot. An analysis of the coffee in the package shows that it was not poisoned. A large quantity of the drug was used. Physicians say there is not way of telling definitely what amount was used.

A new mandolin and guitar and pair of trousers were taken from the house and destroyed. The instruments were found in pieces in the coal shed and the trousers’ were lying in the weeds torn to pieces, indicating a spirit of malice and envy on the part of the perpetrator of the crime. The officers are investigating the case thoroughly and have found the place where arsenic was bought. Recently an effort was made to burn the Combs house. Repeated efforts have been made to poison the horses, cows and dogs belonging to the family. Obscene anonymous letters have been sent to different members of the family. The poisoned woman’s husband lives in Kansas City. The county attorney believes that he has found the guilty person.
William Fairfax Combs and Janet Taylor Caldwell

I am looking for information pertaining to William Fairfax Combs. He was the son of William Edgar Combs and Nancy Roach. The grandson of William Henry Combs and Sarah Susan Flowerree. He married Janet (Miriam) Taylor Caldwell she was born 7 Sep 1900 in either Glaslow, Scotland or Holland? She and William F. Combs married 27 May 1919 probably in Buffalo, New York. They divorced in 1931. One daughter was born to this union - named Mary Margaret (Peggy). I believe she may have gone by her mother's maiden name Caldwell. She married Gerald Fried. William F. Combs was born in Jackson Co., WV on abt. 1897 - I think he may have died in Riverside, CA, May 1972. Janet Taylor Caldwell went on to write a number of "Best Selling Novels", including, "Captains and The Kings", it was made into a mini series. Her father's name was Arthur F. Caldwell her mother, Annie M. (Taylor?). The parents probably both died in Buffalo, NY. Arthur was b. abt 1878 and Annie 1880. I am looking for information related to descendants of Mary Margaret Caldwell Freid.

Isaac Combes of Indiana and family

Hello,
I am trying to find Isaac's parents. He was born in 1817, based on his age at his time of death. I have his death certificate. The 1880 Census records give a persons place of birth and parents place. Isaac was born in Indiana and it has his parents born in Maryland. There were several families from the New England area that settled in Vigo County Indiana. His death certificate has information given by my ancestor, Isaac's first born son, Benjamine F. Combes. He doesn't give Isaac's mothers name but said his father was T. Combes. I actually went to the courthouse to confirm that it was not an error. The record clearly said T. Combes. I know throughout my Combs/Combes family history the name Thomas is passed down. Although, I am not sure on how sure Benjamine was if he could only think of the first name starting with a T. Isaac's wife was Mary Steel Loveless, and they married in Terre Haute, Vigo County Indiana on Aug. 18, 1837. I have been trying to look for Combs/Combes settlers that were from Maryland and came to Vigo County but have not suceeded in locating them. Does anyone know of Maryland settlers to this area? The Combes settlers had to travel with others. I would really appriciate any advice in reference to my dilemma. Thank you for your time.

Lori Combs

Combs Rev War Records

I'm going through my notes and trying to file things and put them away.

I found two records of Combs men who served in the Rev War. I am wondering if anyone has obtained their service records from the National Archives. If so, could you please share the information with me?

Francis Combs, served from Dec 1777 when he was at the hostpical through may 1778 at least when he is noted as "on weeks command". He was a private in the Va 2nd Brigade, 10th regiment, 5th division, John Spotswood's company. Additional comments on the valleyforgemusterroll.org sidte are "Part of the 10th Virginia regiment during Valley Forge encampment, but transferred ot the 6th Va regiment in Sept 1778. Complete record of both regiments filed wit hthe records of the 6th.

The second person is George Combs. Served from at least Dec 1777 when he was noted as "fit for duty" through June 1778 when he was noted as "sick present". He was a private in the 4th Va Brigade, 4th regiment, 3rd division in Capt John Riddick's company.

Thanks in advance for any help. Does anyone know how these men connect in the Combs lines?

Bobbi Estes
