Hi, I'm curious about Percy Combs, Stockbroker, who arrived in US via Ellis Island, circa 1911 from Bermuda and London. He may also have been in Australia.

He lived the first part of his life in London, England until age of 37 when he "disappeared" having lost all his money in business, leaving wife (Ruth), daughter and son (Violet and Hugh) in England. The family thought he had gone to Australia, but no trace found and records have shown a Percy Combs, Stockbroker arriving in the USA in 1911. So I am curious to get in contact with any descendants of a Percy Combs, who was a stockbroker!

I am his great grand-daughter. It is possible that in his new life he would not have mentioned his old one at all, given the circumstances.
Re: Laura J Combs of Greene Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, California. Martha J

This is the information that I had about Laura J Combs, I got this from my Aunt:

LAURA2 COMBS (UNKNOWN1) was born September 04, 1875 in Green County, Indiana, and died 1951 in San Luis Abispo. California. She married TALBERT L. LEWIS December 25, 1894 in Fort Scott, Kansas. He was born Abt. 1870.

Notes for LAURA COMBS:
Laura's husband left her after she had given birth to two children. Laura Combs lost her son when he was very young. As soon as Lucille was old enough to work, around ten years old, she was left with a couple to work for them and Laura left to seek her fortune. From old pictures that seem to be rather risque for her time period, it looks as if she may have been in the entertainment field, in some way. She did return occasionally to visit Lucille. After Lucille was grown she did become closer to her and to her many grandchildren. Though she was married to a number of different men and remained in the state of California, only coming to visit on occasion. She was a very attractive women and her pictures reflected her appealing looks. When she died either in the late forties or early fifties her name was Laura Spencer.

Notes for TALBERT L. LEWIS:
Talbert Lewis left Laura Combs after coming to Missouri. She had two small children that he left her responsible for. He remarried and moved to the DuQueen, Arkansas area. He did help his daughter some with her family during the depression, by sending them fresh peaches and a side of bacon as often as he was able to. His son by Laura died at a very young age. Nothing is known about who his parents were or actually what happened to him other than brief mentions by his granddaughter, Rosemary, concerning the food help he provided during the very lean depression years.

Children of LAURA COMBS and TALBERT LEWIS are:
3. i. SUSIE (SUE) LUCILLE3 LEWIS, b. September 25, 1895, Fort Scott, Kansas; d. January 04, 1972, Auxvasse, Mo.
ii. CHARLEY CLARENCE LEWIS, b. December 19, 1896, Rich Hill, Mo.; d. August 25, 1906.
Notes for CHARLEY CLARENCE LEWIS:
Charley died before he reached his tenth birthday of diphtheria.

This is the possibly incorrect information that I had on her parents until now?:
UNKNOWN1 COMBS He married MARTHA JANE COMBS. She was born Abt. 1850.

Children of UNKNOWN COMBS and MARTHA COMBS are:
2. i. LAURA2 COMBS, b. September 04, 1875, Green County, Indiana; d. 1951, San Luis Abispo. California.
ii. RUTH COMBS, b. Abt. 1877.
Notes for RUTH COMBS:
Absolutely nothing is know of this lady except there is a picture of her on a post card that lists her as a sister, although family members have said she was a half sister only. The picture was made at a house on Joplin St. in Joplin, Mo.

Hi Marj,

Yes, except for William Frances Combs who was adopted by Aron, I have been unable to identify the other children. My ggg grandmother Dorothea Combs married Harris Kolb in Jackson County Georgia. It is presumed that Dorothea is one of the daughters of Aron and Betsy Combs (Justice). However, I have not been able to find absolute proof of this.

Additionally, on this side of my family, there have been discussions of a Cherokee blood line, however I have been unable to conclude this through records. I do find it interesting that in my grandmother Glenn's picture album (Dorothea's grand daughter) that there was post cards and other documents that were Cherokee related.

Any help that you can provide in determining his children would be greatly appreciated.

Mark

Well, this goes to prove that the COMBS family is a little 'screwy'... LOL I do not know much about how the DNA works but was told that I am DEFINITELY NOT from that blood line. Our family 'assumed' we were from Kentucky but there was nothing proven. I was raised in the 'Show Me' State and make no assumptions. Here is what I KNOW for a fact and have documentation to prove.
- I am the son of Dwight Truman Combs (b. 1941 in Missouri)
- He is the son of Floyd Earl Combs (b. 1898 in Missouri)
- Floyd was the son of Elihue Combs (b. 1867 in Arkansas)
- I have to get back into my records and find the hard copy of Elihue Combs being the son of Elihu Combs (b. 1834 in Indiana)

I have land sale records to show Elihu Combs (b.1834) and a Nathan Combs (b. 1825 in Indiana) bought land together in Oregon County, Missouri in the mid-a800's. A man still living, Roe Combs, Jr. is from the Nathan Combs line. DNA showed that Roe Combs, Jr. and I are related. So, Elihu and Nathan are related. I'm not sure how. Some of the decendents of the Kentucky Combs family have also been DNA tested and our DNA did not match.

The youngest son of the Kentucky Combs family was named Byram (Biram). There isn't much information about him, but it is BELIEVED (not proven) that he went to Indiana. This makes it all the more confusing because there area few Byrams (Birams) in Indiana AND there is a Byram in my family line but the ages do not match to be the same person.

If I can get copies of your kinship (census records, birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, etc) that show the parenthood or bloodlines, I would love to chase that down. A lot of things my family has said throughout the years has been proven wrong. A few things have been proven right as well though...

I am anxious to see what you have and hope we can make a major breakthrough... what I have as evidence right now though does not substantiate my bloodline as having any Native American blood....... I honestly wish I could find that it does though...

I hope to hear from you soon... Thanks.

Darin

Hi, Darin-

After hearing about the "no native blood" issue back in April or so, something certainly is "off". My grandfather was indeed one-quarter Cherokee and entitled to being on the rolls as well as the "indian money" as he liked to call it. It was confirmed through my father, who checked with one of his cousins and Joe and one of Nathan's other sons were going to enter on the rolls, but for one reason or another did not do so.

I am very (VERY) confused as to how this line is "messed up". My father has papers from my grandfather showing we are from the Kentucky Combs family (and actually, one of our relatives was the Governor of Kentucky at one time).

Are you absolutely certain you traced everything well?

My father said he is so certain, he would happily take a DNA test (but I am questioning the reliability now).

Let me know your thoughts on this??

I am not a Combs researcher, but here is some information concerning Combs in Loudoun Co. Virginia.

First, Loudoun was not created until 1757, so someone born in 1750 in what became Loudoun was actually born in Fairfax County.

According to the index to the Tithables of Loudoun 1758-1781 by the Sparacios, here are the earliest occurrences of Combs males on those lists.

Coombes, Andrew - 1 tithable; List taken by Jas. He was married to Mary Combs. Remines was not shot by John "Limpy" Combs. He and wife Mary were witnesses in Limpy's trial. Limpy shot and killed John "Greasy" Combs (see attached files). Mary was born about 1854/1855 and died May 1913 per her death cert. Her parents are listed as Jerry Combs and Sally Kelley.

Remines and Mary did have a son Harrison who was married to Nora (I have her as Nora Sumner).

Other children:
Riley
Emily
John D (called Grace)
Sarah
Sabrina
Perlina
Harrison
Wash
Bradley (My Grandfather)
McKinley

Nancy
John Combs - Nelson Ky

This John Combs is not in my family Tree, I'm just trying all angles to find information on a Robert Ash in my family tree.
This John Combs, born between 1780 and 1790, appears in the 1840 Census for Nelson Ky. The family consists of 1 male 50/60, 1 F 5/10, 1 F 10/15, 1 F 15/20, 1 F 20/30,1 F 40/50.
Robt Ash is listed next to him in this census. The Robert Ash in my tree was born in Ky abt 1807. He married Matilda Shumate in Nelson Ky on 21 July 1835.
Matilda Shumates parents are generally listed as Daniel Shumate and Delilah Ashby, but I believe her parents are Nimrod Shumate and his first wife Peggy Smithers.
Nimrod Shumate is also listed on the same page of the 1840 census for Nelson Ky as Robt Ash and John Combs.
A couple of books on the Shumate Family suggest that Robert Ash could have been an Ashby, but give no evidence.
I think I have seen connections between Combs, Ash, Ashby and Shumate families.
I know it's a long shot, but does anyone know of any connection between this Robert Ash and John Combs.

Re: Lewis Combs-Hannah Covert, Ovid, Seneca, New York

This person is probably related, could be Lewis' father. Lewis lived on Lot 15 in Ovid.
Samuel Combs
Samuel Combs was born near Livingston Manor in 1755 the son of Samuel
Combs, Sen., and settled in the Town of Ovid on Military Lot N. 15 about the
year 1800. He was a soldier in the Revolution, and had once before seen the
land that he purchased, for he and his brothers, John and Peter Combs had
encamped here with the army of General Sullivan in 1779. In the War of 1812
Samuel Combs followed the army as a trader, selling the produce of his farm
of six hundred acres, and died away from home on one of these trips. His
cattle were marked by earmarks ?to be a square crop of the right ear and
half-penny under the left, and a slit in the end of the left.? His wife, Hannah
Kuhn Combs, was born at Rheinbeck in 1740 and was first married to Henry
Garrison, who died leaving her with five children. On February 11, 1781, she
married Samuel Combs in the Dutch Reformed Church and they resided in
Livingston Manor where three children were born between 1781 and 1786. In 1797
the family removed to the Manor of Rensselaerwyck and leased a farm from
Stephan VanRennselaer at the yearly rental of 22.5 bushels of good, clean
merchantable winter wheat and four fat fowl along with many other provisions as
to how the farm should be conducted and the produce sold. Widow Hannah
Combs continued to reside with her son, Peter Combs and his family, in a
log-cabin opposite the site of the Combs School House until her death on May 6,
1823.
>From ?History of Ovid, Seneca Co., N. Y.? (covering the years 1789 to
1889) published by W. E. Morrison & Co., pg. 281.
Gary Combs, Marion,NY

Daniel Boone Combs

Hi, folks.

I am wondering if anyone could help me find some information on my great-grandfather, Daniel Boone Combs. All I can really find about him is the 1920 census in Clay County, KY, which lists my grandfather (Samuel) as 6 months old and Daniel Boone as 35 (which makes his DOB approx. 1885). Daniel supposedly died while looking for work in Harlan, KY between 1920 and 1922. I have been able to find no record of his death, nor any prior records to the 1920 census.

The 1920 census in question can be found here: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1920usfedcen&a...

Much thanks to anyone who might be able to assist me!

Hello,

I have just started a search of the Stacy's from Hazard for my brother-in-law, Donald. He was born in 1946 to Beatrice and Hubert?? Stacy in Hazard. Don was the last(we think)of 5 or 6 children. There was a sister, Florence, who was about 18 when Don was born and a brother, Cleatis, who was about 16 when he was born. Beatrice passed away about a year after his birth. He was adopted by Erwin and Nellie (nee Combs)Maggard.

If you have any info that may fit into the puzzle please contact me and/or feel free to pass this along to anyone whom you think might have some knowledge of the Stacy's.

Thanks for your time,

Debby

Debby

Something happened and Jake was shot and killed by one of Hester's brothers. Am looking for any information about this. Which brother shot Jake and why ? I had a newspaper article about it but I lost it and haven't been able to find it online again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
