I can provide more details if you can email me. Not sure how we can exchange info privately not on a public board. My previous message... frank and mary are both buried in the central city cemetary, and photos of the headstones are online.

Thank you... i am trying to figure out the relationship. I visited the family plot in central city years and years ago, and recognized the comfort name as being one of the headstones associated with our family. I am doing some digging to confirm or if it was just my imagination. Would have been on my grandmothers side which i believe had the name scott and/or wolcott involved as well. She passed in 1983 so unfortunately do not know much at this point. I remember hearing that we were welsh on my grandmothers side, but all best recollection at this point.

Am sure you already know this, but photos of the headstone are at http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=co...;
That would be Frank Nelson Comfort, son of Nelson Rounds Comfort and Frances Lenore Martin of Lanesboro, PA. The Comfort genealogy by Botting & Botting (p. 221) lists Mary's maiden name as McCoy. They had 4 daughters: Fannie, Nellie, Katie, and Addie. The last 3 are listed with the family in the 1910 US census in Central City. I have this family in my tree on WorldConnect, here on RootsWeb. The tree name is "tlathrop".

I would be interested in any information that you might have about descendants of this family.

Re: Comfort family in Michigan

Hello again, I talked to my mother and realized I missed a generation in my previous post. Aaron Comfort was my 3x great grandfather. Woolston and Elwood were his sons, Elwood was my 2x great grandfather. Albert,my great grandfather, was one of Elwood's sons. We have a Comfort Families of America family tree, but we're not sure how much there is of Woolston's family. Apparently, Woolston ran a mill on the River Raison, which goes thru Tecumseh, and the mill was on Comfort Road (the road is still there, the mill long gone). The mill was built by Aaron Comfort (Woolston's father) and Samuel Satterthwaite, who were both friends and brothers-in-law! Anyway, the mill fell on hard times, and after that operation tanked Woolston and Martha moved to Jackson. So, I guess you and I are cousins! If you want to keep digging into this, please call me at 517.282.2306. Thanks!

Hello! I know your query was posted a long time ago, but I just ran across it. I am a direct descendant of the Comfort family that settled in Tecumseh, MI in the early/mid 1800's. I don't have the family tree with me, that is with my parents who still live in Tecumseh, but I recognize the names Woolston/Martha (lots of Martha's in this family!). My great-great grandfather was Aaron Comfort, his son was Albert, and Albert's son Ralph was my grandfather. Perhaps Woolston and Aaron were brothers? There's a link there, I know it! If you're still interested, please get back to me and we can do a lot more digging.

No, personally I've not heard of Lane's in the Buffalo area in 1911, but I'm going to check the census during that time frame. Some 40 years later - closer to the early 1950's - a brother to my father, whose name was Ronald or Frank Lane, they called him both - lived in Corning, NY. I was just a kid, but I'm almost certain he worked for the railroad there. Dad also had another brother, Stanley Lane, who the family called "Skeezix" for whatever reason, who lived in the Binghamton, NY area. They have all been gone for many, many years. We weren't at all well traveled, but both the brothers used to come back to Pennsylvania to visit the farm - Uncle Frank always brought me a silver dollar when he came; and once we went to Corning to visit him. Boy, wouldn't it be wonderful if we could go back and ask the questions today that we had the opportunites to ask sixty years ago?

This is a classic example of a family that was split by the the two philosophies of the American Revolution. Those who did come to Canada were in fact Loyalists, received Loyalist land grants and married into other Loyalist families.

There are several names you mention that do come up in my clan a few or more times. They include Tripp, Horton, Brown and Traviss. Also perhaps Hoit which may also be a variation on Hyatt and Haight.

It's interesting how tightly they were bound together even after fighting on opposite sides of a war. (Or at least taking opposite sides.) They still continued to marry into each other's families long after. Whatever their relationship was in Marlborough, it certainly cemented them together for a very long time.

My mother's mother's father's line is Springsteen. They also came from New York during the war and married into the Comforts. They were Loyalists who fought in the Revolution.

Have you heard of any Lanes living in Buffalo around 1911?
Hi Sylvia,

This is not a co-incidence. They were all a part of a New York/Gainsborough clan. My g-g-great grandmother's sister Rebecca Comfort married Joseph Lane, son of Jonathan Lane and Hannah Horton.

Elizabeth Comfort, (my g-g-great grandmother) was born in New Malborough. There appears to have been a group exodus from New Malborough to Gainsborough.

Thanks, Stephen,

Your information was very enlightening. And I need to let you know that I couldn't agree with you more regarding the family Bibles being auctioned off. Such a sad thing when genealogy and ancestry gets "out of the family". I check eBay and such auctions frequently to see what is listed - sometimes the lack of caring would just make you want to shake the people selling off the Bibles. I like to think that they often end up in auctions and sales and Thrift shops because the deceased person perhaps did not marry and had no one to hand them down to. I'd hate to think that their family history just didn't matter to them as much as the token amounts they receive for the Bibles.

Some of us were not lucky enough to have family Bibles and recorded family histories left behind, thus we plod along.....searching! Thanks so much. Every clue is a treasure.

Sylvia

Arlene,

Thanks for that information. The point I found interesting is that I purchased the Bible on eBay as I'm trying to find more information on the Decker family as it pertains to my maternal grandmother who was the daughter of George Decker and Delia Whispell. Their ancestor's came from New York State. My grandmother married a Lane and this is the intriquing part of your response - one member of the Jonathan Lane, Sr. family (b. abt 1700-d.bef 1769), with Jonathan Lane, Sr. being the son of Daniel Lane, born Rye, Connecticut Colony abt 1670; Daniel being the son of George and Mercie Lane 1640's to 1727) . Johnathan Lane, Sr. and wife, Rebecca - maiden name unknown - had a son Jonathan LANE, Jr., born abt 1735 in White Plains, Westchester Co, NY and died about 1807 in GAINSBOROUGH, ONTARIO, Canada.

Jonathan Lane, Jr. married Hannah HORTON abt 1757 in Dutchess Co, NY. Hannah died 1797 in Gainsborough, Ontario, Canada. Jonathan Lane, Jr. migrated from Marlborough, Ulster Co, NY to Gainsborough, Ontario, Canada in 1786.

Perhaps just coincidence that Mary Comfort Decker and husband, Thomas Decker were in Gainsborough, Ontario and that some of my Lane/Decker ancestors from Ulster/Dutchess/Westchester Co, NY also migrated to Gainsborough, Ontario, Cananda? Or could there have been some relationship or acquaintance? Chances are we will never know for certain. But I do appreciate the "food for thought"
Sylvia

Perhaps this is a clue, although it's not clear how it ties in:

Mary Comfort b. c1772 d. after 1852
married Thomas Decker d. June 1797
(they lived in Gainsborough Twp. Ontario)

children:
Nancy Decker
Laney Decker
Issac Decker

Mary Comfort m. Abram/Abraham Colborn, 1849, Norwich, Oxford, Ontario

I'm looking for information about my g-g-grandmother, Mary Comfort, who was born 10 Jun 1826 in "Upper Canada," married in the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Norwich, Oxford, Ontario on 27 Dec 1849, to Abraham Colborn.

The same date and in the same church were married Stephen Comfort and Mary Jane Parker. The two couples witnessed for each other. Presumably Stephen and Mary Comfort were brother and sister.

I have no idea who Mary's parents were or where (other than "Canada") she was born. Any information would be appreciated.

Regards,

Angie
It's just gensmarts.com. I've found it well worthwhile. I was having no luck on my own and never had heard of any alternate spellings, although I knew gf Henry Comfort attended German church services, so wasn't actually surprised when it found them.

Ancestry can also send it to you on cd, which is how I bought it.

Hi,

Just wanted to share another problem with the Comfort research. I have found Comforts spelled Kunfar and also Kumfer, which were one generation back from my husband's grandfather, Henry B. Comfort b. 1870 in PA, father is Lewis b. 1841 (spelled Kumfer and Kunfar), and his father is Abraham (spelled Abm Kumfer) b. 1814 in Mifflin Co. Pa. Both the Abm and the Kunfar and Kumfer spelling hampered my searches on census'. Actually, GenSmarts found it for me.

Dolly

I'm looking for any information on the Comfort family from Michigan. My Great-grandmother was Francis Linderman(1887-1965). Her parents were Ida(1867-1943)and Charles Levern Comfort(1868-1938). Also buried in Jackson are Charles parents Woolston(1834-1901)and Martha Comfort(1840-1921). Also a Lynn(1866-1925) and Mildred Comfort(1868-1921). I can not find a connection with the last two to my grandparents. Any help with my ancestry would be great.

Hi
Most of my Comfort family so far that I have traced point to NY area slowly spread to Iowa, Illinois and head west. I admit I'm new to the game as I'm still wading through the different spellings and bad penmanship on alot of records. my ggrandmother was Effa Comfort (Married Fred Warner) 1888- 1975, her parents Willis I & Helen Ann (Jewell) Comfort, his were Uriah Upson & Julia (Bennett) Comfort, then there's Thomas Morgan & Cynthia (Upson) Comfort, Edward C & Lavina (Morgan) Comfort, Richard B & Charity (Perkins) Comfort, Robert J & Elizabeth (Betts) Comfort. I've run across alot of spellings like Cumiford, Kunfar, kumfer, and kumfort as well as wierd spellings for first names. If anyone out there find a link to any of the names I have listed please contact me
Dannele
savantag@yahoo.com

I've been doing a little tracking on the MN Hebenstreit's. Mildred H Comfort married Hollis M Comfort.

1930 census gives a Zeulda Bergemann as the mother of Mildred H Comfort (living with them).

He is the son of Francis V Comfort (b: Mineral Point WI of Amzi W Comfort and Eliza Van Ornman both of NY) & Elizabeth T Hebenstreit.

Siblings of Hollis: Frances V 1891-? unknown if she wed.

Helen Dorothy 1895- was still at home in 1930 with widowed father.

Russell D married Florence (?) 1930 census states she was an authoress also! she was about 10 yrs his senior. They also lived in Chicago.

Atwood V Comfort 1890-

Since two as authors marrying into the Comfort family; I'll add a tidbit. Elise (Elizabeth T Hebenstreit Comfort)'s brother John, wed a gal Florence Beadell of IA. Her brother, had small pox when young, which left him deaf...he worked in the newspaper field, and is known for coming up with "Want Ads" as we know them today.

Bertha Mae Comfort was my aunt. she would have been W S Comforts grand daughter. She was never married to the man you mentioned. Her mom was Dora. Her dad was William B Comfort. She has a daughter still living, (my cousin) her name is Georgia Mae Rawls. She lives in Joplin, Mo. I knew my aunt Bertha as "Aunt Toots" She is buried in Joplin Mo. as Bertha M. Nair. at Stone Cemetery. She was a very wonderful, caring person. Half Cherokee and Shawnee. She was not married to T L Chism.
