Edwardsville is located just about 2 miles from Wilkes-Barre (across the river). It is a small town. Other towns that surround it are Luzerne, Kingston, Larksville, Courtdale, & Pringle.

It is the northeastern part of the state. Maybe 30-35 miles from the Poconos.

Hope this help.

Hello:
I am tracing my Keenan family roots in Co.Down,IRL. My gr-gr-gr grandparents, Felix and Sarah (McQuoid) Keenan emigrated from Co.Down about 1850 to Cumberland, ENG near the border of Scotland. In reviewing some of the Keenan entries for Cumberland, I have seen reference to some children being born in Scotland. Can you give me any additional info as to where in Ireland your Keenan's originated?
Best regards,
Chuck Keenan

I presume they married in Ireland and came from the same county. I have had a family member say they think it may be County Monaghan? but we have no concrete evidence of this. I have been SEARCHING for years on information on my GGG Grandfather Edward Mohney Cummiskey...spelled also your spelling...he was a Doctor married to Jane Porter. Some of their children are Joesph Comisky, JPR Cummiskey (both fought in the battle of Fair Oaks for Jefferson Co. in Va.) Elizabeth, Martha, Mary Jane "Janie" Chrystian, and AUGUSTUS my 2nd Great Grandfather. They are all buried in a Cem. Plot owned by the family in Dayton Pa. I felt they must of moved into Armstrong County from Bedford County in Pa. because I can find no other Pa. Comisky's. He was from the townland of Cornamuckla in Donaghmoyne Parish. They had 8 children and all came to the US in 1881, and lived in and around Newark, N J. Owen died in Newark in 1902.

Hi, Lauretta!! This is probably a long-shot, but thought I'd reply anyway. I, too, have seen the name spelled a million different ways from Comiskey to Comisky, Cumiskey, Komasky and found out that at one time there were also MACComiskey's in Scotland. The Mac was dropped at some point. I also learned that the prefix MAC is more Scottish as opposed to Mc--which is usually Irish. Anyway, although I don't know of any Comisky's in NY or NJ, the similarities of the first names you discovered struck me as being very familiar. As far as I'm aware, my Comisky's came to the US from Ireland--I THINK around 1850--and settled in Wisconsin. My great-grandfather, Thomas Comiskey, was born either in Ireland in 1850 or was born in WI once they arrived here. His marriage certificate, dated 1883, has his last name spelled KOMASKY. His parent's names are listed as being Philippi and Cecelia Komasky--her maiden name being Duffy. Census records indicate that at least his parents are from Ireland. In 1883, Thomas married Delia (or Della) Horkhamer--the spelling of this name later being changed to Horkheimer. Thomas and Delia had 8 children that I know of--Rose (or Rosa C.), Cecelia, John, Elizabeth, Phillip, Kate (short for Kathleen, my paternal grandmother), William and Raymond. I know so little of my grandmother's siblings, that it's possible that one or more of the sons left Wisconsin at some point and went East. It just struck me as odd that you have a Philip, a Kate and a Rose in your family also. Could be that they're members of the same family, but I'm not sure. My Comisky's were RC also. I posted a message on the COMISKEY message board back in August hoping to get some help, but no one replied to it. Would love to hear back from you and hope this information will be helpful to you.

My ggg grandfather was Dr. E.M. Comminsky ( every census I find it spelled Comisky, Cumminsky, or Comminsky) all different but the same family. My direct line is Augustus Cumminsky. He married Sarah Porter and had my g. grandmother Mary Jane Comisky. All spelled this way in the census I have found for them. I know they came from Ireland but I only know this family came to Armstrong Co. in N. Mahoning twp. This is about an hour and a half away from Pittsburgh Pa. Where is Edwardsville Located. I could never find what happened to Augustus and his brother Alexander after 1850. The census still shoed Edward Mohney, Elizabeth Jane (Porter) his wife Christyan, John and Joesph who fought in the Civil War, and Martha. I have had a very diffuclt time finding anything about my gg. grandfather Augustus or nicknamed Gust. hope you can shed some light on this. Thank-you, Mary Jane

Hi! I'm new to this site and couldn't believe how many Comisky's there are! I always thought the spelling of my name of was unique because when my grandfather (Hugh Comisky) came to American from Ireland he changed the spelling from "Comiskey" to Comisky. I was just wondering how your spelling came about.

Spelling of Comiskey

There are so many different spellings for Comiskey that its mind-boggling. I think spelling was just a matter of who was DOING the spelling. Mostly it was clerks who wrote names however they sounded and so lots of Irishmen had the spelling of their names changed when they arrived. My Comiskeys came to the US from Canada which doesn't seem to have been very regulated at the time.
Carolyn

There was a John Commisky in my family but I think he would have been a full generation or two before your John Comisky. It is possible though that it could be a son or a grandson.

The spelling changes from page to page in my families history, but usually has two M's, sometimes a U sometimes the O, sometimes an e before the Y. I always thought it sounded like a Polish name when I was growing up.
I am trying to track down a Commisky family who came from County Monaghan.

This info has been handed down in my family:

Anna Commisky Duffy remained in Ireland as far as I know.

***John Commisky settled in Pennsylvannia.**

Mary Commisky Rielly settled in New Jersey.

Elizabeth Commisky McCann settled in Massachusetts.

Bridget Commisky McCabe settled in Roscoe Illinois.

I know Mary was in the country before Bridget. Bridget came to the US and stayed with Mary until she married James McCabe in Newark on July 5, 1954. Bridget and James McCabe moved to Roscoe Illinois.

Everything I have read says Mary was in America but does not say anything about John and Elizabeth so I wonder if they came later than Bridget.

My family history makes it sound as if their parents were still alive in Ireland when Bridget left.
Re: how your family came about with the spelling of name?

I don't think there was much standardization of spelling 150 years ago, especially amongst the (mostly) illiterate Irish. My grandfather (born almost 60 years after his grandfather came over) told me he remembers seeing their name spelled Comiskey on the mailbox when he was a child.

I've seen my ancestor (also a Hugh ... but from County Louth) name spelled Cumiskey, Cummisky and Commiskey.

Go figure.
