My Great, Great, Great Grandfather Oliver Commerford emigrated from Kilkenny to Quebec in the early 1800's.

Much of the family lived in the Quebec City region untill even today. Many of the Commerford's are now french speaking.

I am decended from Oliver through to his son Patrick, then his son Patrick, my granfather Joseph, my father Patrick. I am Kevin living in British Columbia, and my son is Conor.

I have a fair bit of information on the branch of the Commerford family that resided predominantly in the St. Jean Baptiste area of Quebec City.

Hi:
My Commerfords came from County Queens (now Laois) in 1851.
They settled in central Connecticut - Hartford and Middletown. Originally they spelled their name with one m and mostly they left it that way - except my Great Grandfather Richard - who added the second m. You will find about 10 times as many messages and much more information under Comerford as you will under Commerford.
Best wishes, Dick Cotter.

My mother was Gladys Commerford and she had a brother named Walter and they lived in Rensselaer, New York. My mother (Gladys) was born in 1908 and she died in 1966. I really don't have much info on their family before them. Her mother's name was either Flossie or Florence. I hope you may be able to help with some connection.

COMMERFORD Jersey/Gosport/Wexford

Hello everyone. I have recently got a bit further with my COMMERFORD tree. John James COMMERFORD was born in Wexford in Ireland in 1802. He married Emily (?) from Gosport, was variously a Mariner, Musician, Mason and Bricklayer. Between 1841 and 1851 they lived in Jersey in the Channel Islands. They had at least 6 children: John James b. 1830, Emily b. 1833, Caroline b. 1839, Edward William b. 1840, Louisa b. 1844, and Harriet b. 1846. Louisa COMMERFORD married Henry William FLOWERDAY in 1862 in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England and Charles FISHER in 1875 in Chiswick, Middlesex, England. Her brother Edward appears to have married Ann Penny BEECHAM in 1868 in Portsea, Hampshire, England.

I am seeking information on John Commerford, cabinet and chair maker in Brooklyn in 1830, then moved into New York City. He lived and worked there for many years. Wife was Mary and had a son, Charles Commerford of the same craft, though early playing professional baseball then clerking. Charles moved to Connecticut and I believe John went there in the later 1870s. John Commerford ran for U.S. Congress on the Lower East Side of New York on various third party tickets including the Republican in 1860.

The same fellow. There's a lot of material on him in the Biography of American Labor Leaders, ed., Gary Fink, and other sources.

Commerford was a member of the Mechanics' Mutual Protection in 1841, became a founder of the National Reform Association in 1844, and of the Brotherhood of the Union by 1850. Although he always called himself a Democrat, he never held a place on that ticket and ran for Congress, on the Equal Rights ticket in 1836, a National Reformer in 1846(?), and finally as a Republican in 1860. He was the first American on this side of the Atlantic that I know of who opened correspondence with Karl Marx, laying the foundations for the establishment of U.S,. cothinkers' groups.

Dear Mark,

I found this post message while searching the internet for informaton on John Commerford, the first president of the General Trades' Union in New York City. Is this man that you are talking about, the same man that I'm searching for?

I am a science writer, writing an article about the formation of the General Trades' Union in New York City.

If this is the same man, could you supply me some information so I can write a biography on John Commerford. So far I've only found information relating to Commerford with respect to the GTU, and need general information concerning his life.

This article will be part of a new reference book The Encyclopedia of Labor History Worldwide, that is being edited by The Schlager Information Group at: http://www.schlagergroup.com.

Regards,
Bill Atkins

Atkins Reseach and Consulting
Normal, IL 61761
http://www.WilliamArthurAtkins.com
309-862-4029

Hi. Did you find out any more information on the surname Commerford. Our family's ancestor from Ireland is Terrence Commerford who emigrated from County Cavan Ireland in the mid 1840's an eventually settled in Iowa. Most of my family lives in Minnesota, although there are some that live in Oregon.

Bareny Comerford from the one M branch of the Commerford surname wrote a book on the orgins of Comerfords in America. He traced the Com(m)erford name back to Normandy to a person by the name of Fulco De Comerford. Apparently, he settled in Ireland during the Norman invasion of William the Conquerer.

I would be interested in hearing more information on our surname.

Jerome Commerford, Duluth, Minnesota

My Grandfather, Phillip, so I was told, was Migrated as a child from Ireland during the potato famin and settled in Hamilton, Ontario Canada. His parents then migrated to New York State to Rochester. As an adult he was hired by the New York Museum of Natural History as a model maker and moved there. I thought that the majority of the Commerfords lived in the East until I moved to the mid west and found more Commerfords in the Chicago phone directory than in the New York, Rochester, syracuse, and Buffalo phone books combined. As far as I know, I have not had any relatives identified as ever living in South Africa, or Australia.

Commerford's

Our branch of the Commerford family hail from Templemore County Tipperary Ireland so I am told. From there they emmigrated to South Africa and ultimately Rhodesia (Zimbabwe).

I would like to conduct a one name study of this surname as family folklore has it that all the Commerfords are some how related - I would love to hear from anyone interested in putting this family "jig-saw" puzzle together.
