john rogers commons

Does anyone have definite proof that you are descended
from John Rogers Commons, son of William Commons. I found
in meetings notes that he had two children by wife #1, a boy
Isaac and a girl, Mary. Later in the historical
society of Chester County, I found the family tree
of an Albert Commons who was descended from John Commons,
son of John Commons and wife #3. I didn't find other
children but there could have been more. I am trying
to find definitely that he was the father of sons,
Joseph, Joel and Jacob. I believe these were the
sons of his brother William who moved to NC, but
need definite proof. William also had children
named Isaac and Mary. I also found no reason to
believe that John ever moved to NC where the three
brothers I mentioned were born. Can anyone help
me prove this definitely?

On two genealogy sources I have found where
postings have been given that gives William Commons'
ancestry to his grandfather in Commons name, but
further than that, using that material at another
source, I found more information of his ancestors
to 1520 in Lancashire England. I have not, repeat
have not, been able to check these internet sources
out to date, but this is an FYI in case any of
you might like to check it out. The first source
is Ancestry.com, then from there to Family Search.
Use Wm. Commons on ancestry.com, and it will be near the
end and will give wife as Sarah Scarlett as usual, but
will also give the father's name. Go from there.
With names you get there, specifically, Gandy, you
can go to Family Search.

This was my paternal grandmother. She married Flournoy Harwell, and they lived in middle Tennessee (Fayetteville). I'd like to find out more information about her side of the family. I understand the name "Commons" is Scottish in origin -- a derivitive of Comyn or Cumming.

As my last resort, is there anyone out there in the Commons Family, regardless of where you may live, that can help me prove the relationship between a Joseph Commons who left North Carolina and moved to Tennessee, with his father William who lived in Randolph
County, NC in the late 1700s to the early 1800s? Is there anyone in the Commons Family
who now hold membership in the DAR or SAR for
which relationships such as this were required? If so, please contact me at JISAMOR@AOL.COM. I need to prove this relationship for my membership in SAR.

Thanks.

Jim Moore

Looking for information on J.L. COMMONS that lived in Bourbon County KS (Devon, Ft. Scott).

In the 1920 Bourbon Co census, he is living with spouse Susie & 3 kids (Clarence, & 2 girls I don't remember the names right now).

In the 1930 Bourbon Co census, he is living with spouse Lulu Belle (Susie presumed to have died between 1920 & 1930).

In 1940, he & Lulu Belle are living in Devon according to some legal records I came across (challenge to a will of Benjamin WASHBURN).

My interest is that I think this Lulu Belle is Belle MANN, daughter of Sarah WASHBURN & Hank MANN and I'm trying to find more information about her.

I ran into a mystery in the Chester County, PA archives.
In searching for wills for the Commons, hoping to find some
of his sons' wills listed, I found two listings only for Commons.
One was for William Commons and another listing noting that
a James Commons had died without a will in 1748. Since
I have been researching the Commons family, I have
only run across two branches, the one that was William and
Sarah Scarlett Commons, and one a German Commons.
So does anyone know who James Commons might have been?
He died two years before William and Sarah were to have
arrived in America (source for that is the fact that
most sources say that son John was born in July, 1750
on board ship coming to America). I found no tax records
nor any other material on this man unless his name was
misspelled and he was actually James Cummings, a man
for who there were some records in Chester County, PA.
If he was a Commons, perhaps he was a brother of William's.
Has anyone run across this fellow before?

A kind soul looked up the Quaker meeting records
of early Chester County PA and sent me the following
information concerning the marriages of JR Commons.
John Common
1st married 3-25-1779 Sarah Dixon, dt. of Isaac
(dec'd) and Ann Dixon of New Castle
married secondly
Sarah Wollaston, p.156 of Church Records of NewCastle
"John Commons, son f William of London Grove and
Sarah, and Sarah Wollston, dt. of Thomas of Mill
Creek Hundred and Hannah; married 22nd of 11 mo. 1786
(this marriage was recorded at Wilmington m.mtg.
Regarding Dinah Hayes, dt of Samuel Hayes
b. 3-6-1775
d.6-7-1798
married John Common
reference p. 594 of Chester Co by Gilbert Cope
Perhaps this is a third marriage, altho I see he died in VA
in 1807)
Note: Samuel also had a sister named Dinah, but the
age is right for his daughter.
There is also another marriage for a John Commons of East
Marlborough who married a Mary Smith in 1800. This could
be him, marrying a fourth time, but there were other John
Commons there by then, sons of his brothers. I have run
acorss the name more than once, too young to be
John Rogers.
I also wonder about the third marriage to Dinah. If
perhaps this was also another John Commons as
he lived in VA or NC at the time. His sons were
born there in the 1780s and 90s. I had only
run across the names of Sarah Dixon and Dinah
prior to recieving this info.
The kind person who sent this said she lived in
chester Co and had been doing Quaker research
for over 20 years and had a nice library and
was close to two Quaker Colleges. Also, access
to county archives and libraries.
