John Commons 1872, Henry Commons 1874

Hi,

Patrick Commons [B~bet 1834-1843 in Galway, Ireland ] and Mary nee Concannon [B~1847 Galway] moved to Whitwick, Leicestershire, UK, circa 1850. They had some children, then went to the USA where they had 2 sons John and Henry and then returned to Whitwick. In the UK censuses John and Henry appear as "British subject, born USA".

I have no idea as to where in the USA they went, does anyone have any knowledge of this family?

Cheers
Phil

Re: Amos Commons b. abt 1780 d. abt 1835 Chester Co, PA

Hi, Mary,

Your Amos appears to be the grandson of William Commons (1723 - 1796).

I recently obtained a photocopy of the will of William Commons from the Chester County Archives, and I've scanned and transcribed it and put it online:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.commons/99/mb.ashx (text)
http://www.usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/wills/commons... (scans and text)

There is a summary of this will that has been posted in the past:

COMMONS, WILLIAM. New London.October 30, 1795. January 28, 1796.Provides for
wife Sarah. Plantation, etc. to be sold. To sons Robert, John, William and
Elisha £10 each. To son Joseph £30. Remainder of estate to Elisha's 5
children by his first wife, William, Sarah, James, Ann and John, share and
share alike at 21.Executors: Isaac Jackson, Jr., Samuel Spencer.Letters to
Spencer, Jackson renouncing.Wit: Robert Correy, John McKee

However, it contains one error. The second son of William's son Elisha is actually named Amos, not James. William spells it "ames", but there is no hint of a "J" in front of it, and his sister Ann's name isn't capitalized, either. Amos (clearly spelled) also appears in Elisha's will, which I'll post at a later date.

This also explains how one of Ann's sons came to be named Amos, a name that doesn't appear at all on her husband's side of the family. And probably also how your Amos has a daughter named Ann.

I find it very interesting that both your Amos and my Ann had sons named William ("William Commons Cranston" in her case), and no sons named Elisha (even though she had seven sons!). They clearly received a pretty good inheritance from William, but that doesn't seem like it would be enough of a reason to avoid the name Elisha if there weren't also some ill feeling towards him.

Scott
Will of William Commons 1795 Oct 30

William Commons was born 7 Jun 1723 in Co. Kerry, Ireland, and died (probably) JAN 1796 in New London Twp., Chester Co., PA. He and his wife were accepted into the Friends' New Garden Monthly Meeting in Chester Co. on 29 Jul 1758.

I photocopied this will recently at the Chester County Archives. I scanned its four pages and it's attached to this message; the extension says .ged, but remove that and you'll have a .pdf file that you can look at very easily with Adobe Reader. (Ancestry for some reason doesn't allow PDF uploads.) The transcription below is also included in the file.

The transcription is literal; there were a few places where I did a bit of guessing, and if the writing's unclear I included a parenthetical translation. You're welcome to second-guess me.

Scott
6th Great-Grandson of William, via his son Elisha and granddaughter Ann

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I William Commons of the township of new london in the County of Chester
yeoman being fare advanced in age and infirm as to bodiley health but of a sound mind
and memory for which I Desire to be humbley thankfull and
Considering the Certainty of Death and the uncertainty of the time there
of Do think fit of the Disposing of such worldly Estate as the Lord in
mercy hath Blessed me with To make my Last will and testamant in
manner and form following that is to say first I order that my
Bodey be Decently and orderly interred at the Descretion of my Executers
hereafter named and that my funearl Expences and all my just
Debts be paid and Discharged as Soo [Soon] as Conveniently may be Itom
I give and Beqeath to my Loving wife Sarah the hous I now Live in
During her natural Life after my Decase [Decease] with the same privelags [privileges]
I hold also the full yearly Rent also the two Beds in the Room with
with the Cloathing Belonging to them the Case of Drawers and all
the puter [pewter] in the hous with hir Saddle and Bridle to be willed by her
to whom She pleases at her Deceas Itom and my will is at the
Deceas of my wife I Do further order the place and all the goods in the
house to Be Sold by my Executers herafter named Itom I Do hereby
autherise Impoure [Implore?] and Direct my Executers hereaftere named
to Direct Barger [Barter] Sell and Convey all this my plantation and
tract of Land that I now Live on and also all my personal
Estate that Remains unsold [?] till then Itom I give and Beqath [Bequeath]
to my sons seveentey pounds teen [ten] to Robart John William
and Elisha and thorty to Joseph which makes up the seventey
pound and the Remeander of my Estat that is Left my order
is that Elishas five Children By his first wife Shall injoy
the hole Be the same money [?] Less Namliy William and
Sarah ames ann and John Shaar and Shear alike and if aney
of them Dies Before the Eage of twentone that ons Share to Be
Deviaid [Divided] amongst the Rest so that the Longest Survear [Survivor] of the five
Shall in Joye the hoal at the Eage of twenty one Itom my
will is that seventey pound Be payed as Soon as Can
Joseph Shaar aspshely [especially] the first and what is Coming to
Elishas Children my order is that the Executers keep it in
ther hands unill [until] each on Recaves [Receives] ther Shar at the age of tweny on
and they to have the intrast ther of for ther trouble
---------------------------------------------------------------------
and Lastly I Do nominate and Constitut and
appoint Isaac Jackson Junor of Newgardin and
Samuel Spencer of Nelondon township and west grove
meeing [meeting] to be my Executers of this my Last will and
testament hereby Revoakeing and Disanulling all former
wills made by me in any wise Declearing this to be my Last
will and testament in witness whereunto I have set
my hand and pak tis [this] 30ith of the 10mo of the year of our Loard
one thousand seven hundred and ninety five [30 Oct 1795] signed sealed
published Renounced and Decleared by the testater as my
Last will and testament in the presence of us

Robert Correy William Commons (seal)
John McKee Sworn

NB my will and order is that if any of my Sons Die Befor
Carl and Scott:
All of my line of the Commons family information was put into a book called "Memoir of The Commons Family". It was compiled by Russell Louis Commons in 1940 and revised and corrected in 1960. He is a descendant from my line which was John Commons.
The lineage of the Commons Family in this book states:
William Commons, Born 1723 County Kerry Ireland, Died 1795, Chester Co., Pa. Sarah Scarlett Born in Ireland. 1725 Died, 1800. Chester Co., Pa. Married 1747 in Ireland. Emigrated to America 1749. Parents of 5 boys.
1. Robert
2. John
3. William Jr.
4. Elisha
5. Joseph

John Commons, the second son of Willam Commons, Sr. grew to manhood on his father's farm and fell in love with a Quaker girl named Sarah Dixon. She belonged to the Kennet Society of Friends and in 1779 they asked permission to get married. This permission was granted so they were married and moved to North Carolina in Randolph County, where they made their home on a farm. Two children were born to them there; Isaac in 1783 and Mary 1787. While the children were quite young, their parents got a fever and died, leaving them to be raised by other folks.
Mary Commons grew to womanhood and never married, but had one child whom she named John, for his grandfather.
John Commons was born May 1, 1811, in Randolph County, N.C., and lived with his mother on the home place where he grew to manhood. Then he fell in love with Rachael Clark. On Jan. 12, 1832, they were married, and John brought his bride home with him to live. John had become a skilled blacksmith and the government offered him 80 acres if he would move to Indiana and run a shop there. So, in 1838 John and Rachael loaded what they could in a covered wagon, and with their little family moved to Indiana. They settled on a farm 3 miles east of Clarksville where they built their home and also his blacksmith shop. Later John built another blacksmith shop in Clarksville out of brick which is still standing and and is now privately owned. John made one trip back to North Carolina where he sold the old home place and brought his mother back to Indiana with him to live. There she spent the rest of her days and died Feb. 15, 1851 at the age of 64, and was buried in a litle pioneer cemetery on the old Commons homestead 3 miles east of Clarksville, Indiana.
I have a tree on Ancestry.com called "My Susan Tree". It has all of my Commons info. I would be happy to invite you to see it.
Scott, what is you email address? I would be very happy to have any information on the 4 other brothers in the Commons family.
Susan

I think you should search under Cummins since the spelling of surnames was seldom standardised. A Susan Cummings is also reseraching Limavady families. <cummins@primenet.com>

He was born Charles Wesley Commons, 14 Jan 1851, Chicago, IL. The certificate shows his father as Henry Commons, born in England, and his mother Rosamond (Commons) also born in England. Notification on the death certificate was made by a Wesley Commons.

Charles Wesley was married to Ella May MILLER, and had one son, my Grandfather, Charles Henry Commons, born 1979 in Burdenville, Cowley, KS.

I have very little information on this branch of the family.

> I hate to say this, but we don't know who John's father was.
> Mary named him after her father or grandfather, I think.

Ah, that's a difficult situation. Well, knowing that your family was in North Carolina, I wonder if there's a connection with John Roger's younger brother Joseph Commons, of whom I have this reference:

1777 DEC 10: Joseph Common ...”has so far failed in maintaining our testimony against War and oppression as to be engaged in driving his kinsman’s Waggon [sic] which was press’d for Military purposes, and has since (contrary to the advice of the said Meeting by Friends appointed) left these parts in order to go to Carolina.”

[From "Chester County Quakers During the Revolution", by Gilbert Cope, in "Proceedings of the Chester County Historical Society" 1902 NOV 20]

If this is my family's Joseph Commons, he may have been the first in the family to head south. Do you know if John Rogers also went to Carolina, or stayed put in Chester County?

> What is your line in the family?

Joseph was the fifth and youngest son of William Commons and Sarah Scarlett. Their first son was Robert (Carl's line); their second son was John Rogers (who married Sarah Dixon); their fourth son was my 5th-great grandfather Elisha. His daughter Ann/Nancy married Thomas Cranston in 1810 and moved with him to Guernsey County, Ohio in 1812. There's a purported picture of them here:

http://usgennet.org/usa/oh/county/guernsey/bios/cranston.htm...

Scott
I have extensive information on other lines from John Rogers' brothers and sisters, particularly for his brother Robert, b 1748 (my line).

Please contact me at houseofcommons@alltel.net

I am interested in following this family. Mary Commons married Daniel Kenny in the RC parish of Kildorrery, Cork, Ireland, in 1820. This could have been her parish, not Daniel's.

Pat, I have a Frederick Louis Commans in my husband's heritage. He was born in 1830 in Hamburg Germany and died in Dorr, MI 1905. Could there be any correlation here? If so, please e-mail me directly at freedomgroup6@juno.com

Re: Thomas Commons b. 1843 Ireland - Bridget Coye 1854 Ballyglass, Mayo, Ireland

I only saw your message today and I, too, am looking for Commons from Co. Mayo. The family I am looking for is Peter Commons married to Bridget Devaney (Diviny) who had Peter, b. 1850 m. Bridget Fitzgerald had a daughter Delia; Margaret, b. 1835 m. Michael Murphy (this is my connection); Mary, b.1848 m. Patt Keane; Bridget, b. ? m. to Thomas Forde; a 2nd Mary, b. 1842; Eleanor, b. ? m. John Staunton; Sarah (Sally) m. Lawrence Calhalane, and 2 Judiths - b. 1844 and 1846. Do you suppose there is a connection i.e. your Thomas is perhaps a nephew of my link, his father perhaps being a cousin to Peter Commons and Margaret Commons Murphy? Would be interested in any other information you may have. My Commons were located around Boherduff, Claremorris or possibly Crossboyne.
